[Q] SIM-cutting question - General Questions and Answers

So I recently bought a phone that required a microSIM (I had a normal SIM at the time). I cut my normal SIM card down to microSIM using a template, some scissors, and a file. After quite awhile I got it to my liking but I'm a little paranoid I may have made it too short. At any rate it still works and goes in my phone fine and I can call/text and all that but I'm curious: Can imprecise cutting result in reduced/altered functionality in a DIY microSIM?

nope.. if u cut the sim even ROUGHLY even then it wont be any trouble if it fits in ur phone.. Just be sure that the YELLOW region doesnt get damaged by any means.. it is the only region of use to us... and dont do these jobs urself.. get it done from the store always.. they have a special tool for this which cuts it perfectly...
Hit Thanks if I am helpful

[Q] Please Help

Hello i just bought a used nexus s and well here it goes...
the story goes like this he bought it a month ago and just this past week he dropped it in a puddle but was quick enough to retrive said phone he then did the rice trick and now there is no sign of water damage aside from the 2 white seals faded red he said the phone worked for a bout a day and now just freezes in a google logo,...
now this leads me to believe a software issue so i am going to stiack with that for now
i am lookin at any ideas of what it could and what i should do now keep in mind i only paid 50 bucks so if it is repairable i have no issue in doing so for this phone as i wanna be able too use it sometime and toss this optimus one away lol
than you very much
can you adb to it while it is in the google loop?
re

If you can get into the bootloader and it is just a software issue check this thread for info on returning to stock system in the bootloader http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1078213
Did you get it to work?

what is the model of your phone and also the operating system of your computer? You want to be careful about using the correct ROM for your phone. Read up about adb. The process is simple enough if you provide enough information.
adb load cwm
adb flash ROM
and you should be good to go.
Not 110% sure if some one were to tale it and tend too itt i would pay for shipping completely i just wanna try to use it

I'm betting the NFC/"SIM Card" daughter board is hosed. If that's the case, you may be screwed, since I'm pretty sure your ESN is stored there. Tear apart the phone and look for corrosion and/or PCB trace delamination. Spray all PCBs down with a mild contact cleaner and fully dry.

[Q] Is there a way to tell how long a Desire S has been in use?

I recently bought a desire s off ebay, it's suppose to be new but I wondered if there's anyway for me to tell for sure or does a factory reset wipe all such info?
Do the carriers have a way of finding out how long a handset has been in use?

Cut it in half and count the rings.
No seriously, there is no way I know of to check on the handset how long it has been in use. The only thing I can think of is to make a note of the IMEI number, and ring carriers and police to see if it's been reported stolen or has been registered on a network.
Edit: It's also almost impossible to use the Desire S for any period of time, without wearing off the paint surrounding the USB charging socket. Does that show an signs of clumsy cable attachment or wear?
Another edit: How easily does the battery cover come off? If it's brand new it'll be a b*tch. If it slides off easily it's a sure sign it's been on & off several times before.
The best way to know if its used..call few network providers and ask them if its black listed (even if its not) and they can exactly tell u from and till when it was used and even the mobile number used on it....all they need is the IMEI number....anyways let me know the IMEI number if u r in the UK....will try to check it for you....

Thanks for the advice guys. From what you've said I'm confident that it was brand new, but thanks for the offer mackhenri!

Keep having to reboot phone

My girlfriend just got the one x. Periodically throughout the day the phone will show that there is no sim and she has to reboot it to get it to work again. She went to take it back (I wasn't with her when she went ) and the guy at best buy told her that it was because of the service being bad. It is completely stock. Is this a common problem? Is there an easy fix or should I just take it back.

it is most likely a poor contact between the sim and the mount (and I've been in terrible reception and never had it show as "no sim". I've seen a few people recommend a piece of sticky tape on the back of the sim (where there are no contacts), to press the sim onto the pins slightly harder. I haven't tried that myself, so I'd be screaming blue murder at the shop you got it.
ATT New SIM
AT&T has to change to a new SIM card for the newer phones. The One X is a smaller card. I would check to make sure they gave her a new one and not cut the original one down. They do this to restore contacts to phone before they issue the new one.
Hope this helps.

Cutting the card down would not make a difference at all. All they do is cut away parts of the card that aren't needed, it's just trimming fat. I have a cut down card and I haven't experienced any problems.

Although trying a new SIM wouldn't hurt, and might help. You can get one for free from the AT&T store.
I don't know if its a "common" problem, but it has been reported by various users. Might be poor contact in the SIM tray, as suggested, or a software issue. But don't let them tell you its a network problem, because that sounds like a bunk, scripted response.
Since the phone is bone stock, I'd try a new SIM, factory reset, and the tape trick previously suggested (just make sure you don't get tape stuck in the SIM tray). If none of those work, return it for a new one. Don't know what Best Buy's return policy is. But at AT&T stores, you can exchange for a new phone within 30 days of purchase.
Thanks for the responses. She actually dropped the phone yesterday and it hasn't happened since lol. Maybe the sim wasn't in there quite right or something. She likes the phone so hopefully it was just something as minor as that. If it happens again I'll go myself and make sure they give her another one. I just don't want her to have a bad experience with her first Android since I finally converted her from crapple.

I got my OneX on launch.. My wife was a long time crapple user... After roughly 1.5 weeks, she showed up at the house with a fresh OneX, a little while later I was buying her a tablet, she didn't even want to touch an iPad. Got the infinity tf700t and says she will NEVER go with iOS again
Good girl lol

[Q] Unwashed heathen with stupid questions. :)

First, I'm 30 and I've never even owned a cell phone. I'm very tech savvy with computer hardware/BIOS ROM flashes/linux etc. My most sincere apologies for any terminology mistakes and for not knowing enough on the subject. I've been researching this for the last week but I've hit a brick wall while trying to learn more.
I ordered a (working, stock) used Samsung Galaxy S 4G (NOT an S4). Should get it in a day or two.
I want to use it without any cell service what so ever; strictly over my home Wifi network and free hotspots. I'm planning to use Google voice or Oomas app for free/cheap voice service over wifi. The phone was cheap so I consider it a learner/throwaway phone to get my foot in the door with regards to phone rooting/flashing/modding. No worries about bricking the thing as I stumble around in a haze of noobish stupidity and ignorance.
Bleh.. I don't even know what terms to ask/search so I'll just spit it out as best I can.
The SGS4G uses a sim card or will ask me to activate a phone service before I can use it right? There are password/button combinations to manually bypass activation but that's a pain to do every boot. Is the activation built into the Kernal or the Firmware? Are there ROMs that ignore/disable cell activation nags to make this thing a strictly WiFi device? What search terms should I be using to find more info?
Apologies again for the noobish questions and much thanks for any tidbits of info you could toss my way!
I .. Think you'll have to unlock it.. U seem excited and nervous.. Don't stress yourself

You can use every android phone without sim card.
For exemple, I have one phone that is mount on my bike and I use it just for bicycle gps apps and everything is working well with out sim

Turns out its a Mesmerize. I also picked up a couple other android phones and was able to get them rooted and flashed; an LG-P505 flashed to Cyanogen 10 and a MyTouch 3G (HTC Magic 32b) rooted finally. T-mobile had a impassable "insert sim card" screen on the MyTouch 3G that took a GoldCard flash to even get into the phone.
Anyway, I'm totally stuck with this damned Mesmerize. I get nothing on the USB despite having the drivers installed and waiting. Nothing in device manager. The phone charges and brings up the connection mode announcement in the pull down. I've got USB debugging mode set. It will show a greyed out drive that i can't access when in mass storage mode and nothing at all when on KIES mode. The cable worked fine for the LG. Could the USB socket on the Mesmerize be screwed? Any way to force the phones adb client on?
Thanks again for any help you might have. Badass site here. Could read until my eyes bleed and still have more info to look through!

[Q] De-bricking my d2vzw !

So I got a hard brick today while flashing 4.1.2 onto an S3, I think it must of already had it or something, tho I don't see why that would do it, and I was pretty sure I had checked and that's why I was doing it in the first place, but my brain was a lil under-volted at the time (lack of sleep and what not) I was doing so in order to Root/Unlock & Flash CWM....but since I already posted about this earlier this morning - long story short, it said Successful and then I unplugged it and all the sudden my screen went black and never came back. Still installs drivers when i plug it into a PC, and Windows makes the USB Alert sounds, and also if I take the battery out and plug it in, I get a red LED that stays on for about 2 min if that.
So Now that I recapped, Here is what I am bout to attempt to do. Use this guide I found for the sprint GS3 <<<<<<Thanks to De-Bricked for making this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2397145&page=8 >>>>>>
and then this dude here made a you-tube vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dU5H8NJ7vTM&hd=1(which I didnt watch, lol, I can't stand watching How-to-videos) but I do wanna give him a big thanks for the links to everything I needed to make De-Bricked's method work on the d2vzw, he was the first (as far as I know) to make it work on the Verizon.
So basically that's it. It's either that or pay some dev to JTAG it for me, which I hear cost around 40 or 60$. Almost 4 years of Flashing Roms and making Mods/Themes, I finally bricked my first device lol Just glad it wasn't to my new Note 3 VZW lol
So I guess wish me luck, i will post my results, still waiting for the last file which is my stock 4.1.2 from Samsung-update. So if anyone has any tips or anything (this will be one of the few times I've ever ran a Linux environment as well, kinda stoked, lil nervous as well :silly: Send them good vibes my way !
Also bricked i9305
Will be trying this tonight, also hard bricked mine last night. will watch your progress.
My progress haha has been getting caught up in how awesome Linux/Ubuntu is lol but I just wanted to do a lol more research. And I got a new 16gb card and everything so tonight it goes down. I will keep you updated.

I think that is my problem, I have a 16GB MicroSD-card, but its not a Class 10, its a class 6 I believe. I saw some people mention that, but was hoping it was just them or something that could only get a Class 10 to work, and that mine was somehow uber special lol guess not. Going to Target or Wallmart (I hate both those stores with a passion) in the morning to grab one. I need to get this phone fixed.
I was hoping that maybe it could be a "COMMA" Brick, which I am gonna try plugging it in all night tonight and see if it will go on after I have. Even tho this phone wont turn on, it still gets recognized as a usb device by Windows, cause when i plug it into the USB on my laptop, you get the Windows Notification Noise that its plays when plugging/unplugging a USB Device, and the phone sends it's USB Drivers through, and the PC starts installing them. As well as the Red LED that comes on for a lil bit at a time. Which I did have it set before to show a Red LED when battery is low and/or I am charging the phone. So obviously there is still life within this phone.
Also can someone take a look at how the debrick.img was written to my SD-Card and tell me if that looks right. It seems to look ok to me, but I don't have anything to base that off of since I've never see the partition allocation on for this so it could be wrong. Here's the link of the screen shot from my SDcard -

i just had this exact same issue. right after i flashed the unsecure bootchain. get the same exact symptoms.
Well I am about to do it. Just haven't been able to pick up my SDcard yet. Bought one from Walmart online and did the store pickup option but I guess I should"ve just ordered it from Amazon and had it delivered lol. Recently totalled my car so it's hard for me to get around lately.
I will be picking it up tomorrow before noon for sure and then Depending on what one of the guys who helped perfect this method says after he gets the info from me he asked for , which I just sent to him, I will be trying it first thing after I pick up that Class 10 card, cause I gotta get this S3 working for the owner ASAP.
FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE THINKING OF TRYING THE METHOD I HAVE MENTIONED HERE PLEASE REMEMBER TO USE A CLASS 10 MICRO-SDCARD. EITHER A 16GB OR 32GB DEPENDING ON YOUR MODEL OF GS3. NEEDS TO MATCH THE ON-BOARD STORAGE SIZE OF YOUR GS3.

Bricked
I restored my phone form being hard bricked 3 times. Have installed roms before, this phone is a problem.
The 4th time i hard bricked it, can't boot off sd card, no life at all. Sent to mobile tech videos They shipped it yesterday, should have it back Friday or Saturday. Paid the extra $10 for them to root and install Liquid Smooth rom total $60 expensive lesson. Luckily I still have old phone to use.
I used the method in the video linked in 1st post, windows pc, you don't need linux. I believe the problem with my last brick, was that I used a different boot image, and flashed the rom before going back to original. Didn't want to waste more time trying to find a new de-brick image.
Will post when i receive phone.
Good luck to everyone
