Cannot enter recovery - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to get my Xoom to accept an external storage device, phone, camera, etc.. To do this I'm first trying to root it, but I can't get into recovery mode.
I restart the Xoom, press volume down, then volume up to select. It flashes briefly on a page, then to a small robot, on it's side, with a door open and an exclamation mark appears, it sits on this forever.
Is there another way to do this, or another way to plug my phone and camera in?

That is the stock recovery, it'll be useless to you. You must flash a custom recovery. Look in the development thread

[Q] Samsung Nexus s hard reset dont work

hi guys,
i just god nexus from a second hand store. i want to hard reset it but it does't.
it is stuck in the screen where the little green guy with the triangle with an exclamation mark next to it. please help.
is there a way to load the factory rom manually?
(i know how to jailbrake and downgrade an iphone so this should not be so hard)
Hold volume down and press on once you see menu with recovery
press volume again and you will see option for clear storage - thats what you want
that is what i have done already. but why is the mobile preventing me from hard reset ?
I have been hanging around the XDA forums (as well as every other forum I could think of) and have been unable to solve my re-set problem.
I got my Nexus S about a week ago and decided to unlock it. That went well, no problem. Then I decided to root using Superboot - that did not go well. Now my phone is unresponsive, just sits on the Google name with an unlocked padlock on a black screen. I can get into fastboot mode by using the volume up and power button if I do this right after replacing the battery. I cannot seem to go anywhere else. Once I got into a menu that would let me install from sd card, but none of the options would install. I followed the following directions to see if I could do a hard reset:
Hard reset Nexus S using hardware buttons
This option is recommended if you are unable to access the options via the Android OS.
1. Turn the phone off by pressing and holding the Power button for about 2 seconds, the tapping Power off. Alternately, you can pull the and replace the battery.
2. Press and hold the Volume Down button while pressing and releasing the Power button.
3. Continue to hold the Volume Down button until you see a menu appear.
4. Now tap the Volume Down button to scroll down to the Clear Storage option.
5. Press the Power button to select Clear storage.
6. Press Volume Up to select Yes.
After a few minutes the hard reset process will be completed and you can reboot your phone to factory default settings.
I never get to the clear storage option, although I have tried data/factory reset and wipe cache. I can get to the android with the triangle and exclamation point but that will just sit for ever, and removing the battery at that point and then rebooting does not work. It just takes me back to the Google and the unlocked padlock. FWIW - my phone updated right before I unlocked it. I don't think it is bricked, but I sure can't get passed the Google name or the Triangle/android.
Thanks for any help.
heliosue
I've the same problem now - did you ever resolve yours?
Here is how
Power off by removing battery
Hold vol up not down and power,
release power and you get Fastboot mode
vol down to recovery and click power
You get the screen with Android + triangle
Click up and Power again for few seconds
you will get the 'Android Sys recovery'
However if you have my problem 'error in loading the built in SDcard memory this wont help.
The only way i managed to get it to work some times although not now, is to reboot the mobile while it is connected to a PC, and load the PC at the same time.
However this time i am stuck at Google screen
hi guys
have same problem for no reason, the nexus s just keeps rebooting its selp for no reason, i get the power manager error when its booted up
i have tryed to reset from setting and no go, it reboot before i get too far and i tryed to reset from powering up with one finger on vol up and other on power button, i get into recovery and see the android and then i barly see the android on his back with ! and it reboots into its self with out resetting
this has never happened before and i dont know why

any ideas

Serious Issue with NVflash or Gtablet

Well I was screwing around with my gtab, trying to put honeycomb on it, (I was on cyanogenmod) and I knew that I needed to put build 4349 on it. Unfortunately, I put that build on it, and installed my rom, but it didn't work. I decided to do the exact same thing over again, to see if it worked the second time. Halfway through the process, while restarting my gtablet, I had a serious problem. My gtablet will turn on after holding down the power button for about 30 seconds, but the screen is completely black and blank. Also, if I hit the (+) button, it says it will boot a recovery image, but it never does. If I hit the (-) to put it in APX mode for a NVflash, it simply turns off.
PLEASE, I have no idea what to do, because I really don't know what is going on with my tablet. I am just trying to put a honeycomb rom on it, but it seems I have completely screwed it up.
To put it straight: It won't go into APX mode
The screen is supposed to go black and blank when you start up in APX mode. Plug it into your computer and check to see if it is or not.
yea but supposedly it shows the viewsonic logo for a second. Mine when I hit the power button and hold the minus and just hit the power button are both the same. Also, I plug it in and nothing happens.
I tried holding the power for 15 seconds, nothing, if I hit the power for about 5 seconds it turns on that blank screen, if I hit + it says recovery key detected and booting recovery, but nothing happens after that
the black screen is the APX screen, it is blank and black.
You don't see an android symbol first.
my computer never says anything about a tablet without drivers or anything as stated in all guides
It's not unusual for the VS Birds splash screen to get lost during flashing operations that go bad. You also might not get a missing driver message for a number of reasons (especially if the driver isn't missing). So...
If the splash screen is missing, when you turn the tablet on while holding the volume down key the backlight should come on momentarily then the screen will go black. If that happens then you are in APX mode. If you have a linux box handy you can plug it into that and issue an "lsusb" command in a terminal window to verify that. There might be an equivalent for windows but I don't use it so I can't tell you what it would be.
If you are really having that much trouble with it I'd be happy to look at it for you if you cover shipping.

HELP! Bootloader unresponsive!

So, I was trying to flash my NS back to stock from TWRP becuase my power button's broke and I'm sending it in.
Anyways, TWRP crashed during flashing (wow....recovery crashing NOT good), and I cant boot the phone except by plugging it in from being off. However, when I hold vol up and get to bootloader by doing that, the bootloader is completely unresponsive to vol presses, and my comp doesnt see the device.
This is NOT good. But I'm clueless as to how to fix something like a bootloader issue. Anyone?
I would try odin. Search around the Samsung webiste they should have an exe which flashes the phone back to factory default. I've seen one posted around here but it depends which version of the phone you have.
Odin requires very careful use. DO NOT CLEAR YOUR EFS!
It may be your only option though.
If you can jimmy your power button and get into the normal bootloader then follow these steps:
1) install Ubuntu
2) install Android sdk for gb or ics whichever you are using
3) install fastboot (download it from cyanogenmod wiki and copy it to Ubuntu's sbin folder)
4) in bootloader menu, connect USB, then in Ubuntu terminal type fastboot reboot recovery (may be reboot-recovery, can't remember)
You should be able to use your phones capacitive buttons to navigate the menu and install a stock ROM
Sent from above
Yeah. Totally forgot you can do that. Try what he said.
Problem is, fastboot doesn't work. The bootloader is completely unresponsive.
It's like it launches into a crash. I can see the options, but the vol buttons dont do anything. However, those buttons work, otherwise I wouldnt be able to even get THAT far.
I'm trying to get the power button to register a press (it randomly does, but Ive had hours of no luck).
Any other ideas? Why would the bootloader launch into a crash. I wonder if it's because the phone is being turned on via power cable instead of the pwr button, but that seems unlikely.
On a side note, I have my efs backup from when I was using 2.3.7, so I've got it handy if I can ODIN the thing, but I dont know crap about odin.
Read his response again. I don't think you understood what he said. You can initiate those commands through your PC instead of pushing the buttons.

Sorry, I should have elaborated more.
I have tried on both my PC and Mac (via terminal app) to see the device under 'fastboot devices' command. No devices show up, so it's not even seeing the thing. Neither computer sees the device as being hooked up, as far as I can tell.
It'll boot into the unresponsive bootloader when I plug the cable in and hold vol up. At that point, nothing else happens. Doesnt show up on fastboot, etc.
sounds like your power button went. thats the #1 complaint i read about the power button going, the unresponsive volume buttons. my power button is gone to(will register a response every once in a while, on its own. my volume buttons dont register either when in the bootloader. but, i can get them to register. what i do is take the battery cover of, and gently flick the phone with my fingers right near the power button, but on the back of the phone. most the time, the power button will register that i pressed reboot bootloader, but, sometimes it allows me to select up or down with the volume keys. if it reboots bootloader, i just try again. ive got it down to an art since im in the bootloader often, it takes me about 20 seconds to get the volume keys going up or down. at first it would take me 3-5 minutes. i hope that helps.

LOL simms thanks. I had a feeling you might chime in here since I had msg'd you earlier about my pwr button going out.
The thing that sucks is that I was just restoring it to stock in TWRP and it just locked up for some reason. I knew as soon as it happened that I was in trouble. I'll keep messing with it and see if I can get it to register 'Reboot Bootloader'.
I was actually wondering about that earlier. I figured that if the vol keys didnt work, then the pwr button wouldnt either in this situation. I know mine randomly registers presses, but now it's being a *****.
We'll see......
try going into the bootloader and give it a few smack on the back, see if thatll register and "press" reboot bootloader(since its the first option). the first time i went into the boatloader after my power button went, i thought that i was **** out of luck too. but, it turned out fairly very manageable with some practice. i usually flick it very lightly to get the volume buttons to move up and down, to hard and reboot boorloader registers.

Verizon yellow triangle upon factory reset. HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!

Hello. After bricking my device and getting it working again, I decided to factory set it. When it was booting, it came up with the yellow triangle. I can't seem to get out of it. PLEASE HELP. Thank you so much.
Edit to clarify: I wouldn't be so worried if this didn't happen while trying to reset my entire phone... Is there any way out of this? I can't seem to get into download mode.
Edit 2: It says SECURE FAIL: KERNEL at the screen and before the screen pops up, it says in the upper left hand corner in blue it says RECOVERY BOOTING...
Got it. Thank christ. Now Odin won't detect my phone.
Edit: I got it to work by holding volD+Home+Power. When the screen flashed the warning and is about to boot into the error, I pressed the volD button very fast until the warning for download mode came up.
EDIT: Surefire way to get into device: Make the screen go black if it isn't already by pressing the power button. After the screen goes black, hold down volDO+home for about two seconds and then, without releasing your fingers, start holding the power button. The download mode warning screen will flash briefly and then it will go off again. Once you see that screen flash, release your finger off of the power button. When the screen goes off, start holding the power button again. The next screen that loads should be the download mode warning. Instead of clicking "download mode" (unless that was your intent), click volDO to restart phone into regular mode.

Can I use THIS to get into recovery on a soft-touch button only ERISIN?

Hi guys,
so I am trying to recover my ERISIN ES7825V which only has soft-touch buttons from a failed Malaysk.
All I want to do is get back to the OEM version.
What I managed to to is to get Android 6 recovery on there.
The unit only has a reset button in the front, which resets the unit.
I have tried the methods described here (hold and wait till the buttons blink), but it never worked.
The buttons didn't even blink after about 2 minutes of holding down the reset button.
What did work though, is holding the button down for 45s, then pressing it for another 1-2s and then shortpress.
Sometimes that got me into recovery. Other times it went to the Android logo and I could get into recovery with an usb keyboard (R-ALT + Prt Scr + e).
Through this process I have managed to flash Android Recovery 8. But I can't figure out a way to get into Recovery now.
It shows the Navigation Splash screen and then black.
So I wanted to know, if any of those methods is possible?
1. Since it obviously aitomatically flashes the unit, if it finds an update.img on a bootable SD, could I then just create a bootable SD with update.zip so it flashes that also?
2. Could I have a bootable SD, that gets me into recovery though some kind of glitch?
3. On the back of the unit, I found these... pins? Can I do something with them to get into recovery? Like short circuit two of those or something?
https://ibb.co/0qm4kPf
4. I have noticed, that the RST-button on my unit acts different then on other units. So if I do get into recovery, it tells me to short press to select and long press to choose option.
If I press the RST-button, the unit just restarts. So that seems to be the only function. However, if I insert an SD card, it moves one option down. So does plugging the SD card in trigger a button press? It's really weird.
5. I have an USB keyboard connected to the unit and it did work on Android Recovery 6. However, now, with 8, it doesn't do anything. I can press R-ALT + Prt Sc + e all day, nothing happens.
Any way of going into recovery with an USB keyboard, still?
6. I have an USB-A to USB-A cable that I can connect to my computer. Is there a way of connecting it in a way, that I can trigger recovery from adb?
7. In the folder of the PX5 Upgrade Tool I saw the following two files, that I needed to copy onto the SD card: format_data.flag and format_sttdata.flag. The files are empty, but I guess, those are flags that tell the updater what to do after the update is done. Is there a flag-file to get into recovery?
Also one thing: I managed to get the button lights working, so I can at least see, when the unit is on. At the moment, I can see the following behavior:
Unit turns on and shows splash screen, then goes into black screen with the buttons on. After 10 Minutes or so, the unit restarts. That's it.
So it's not dead, but I don't know, what else I can do.
Any ideas regarding those methods?
Thanks!
