TW camera vs AOSP - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Hey all,
Currently I'm running an HTC Sense device.
I know that the sense camera is awesome to its AOSP counterparts.
Is the GS3 the same way?
I thought Samsung a "more" of a commitment to open source; or is the RLS (type rom) just the best way to go for this device?
Thanks in advance..

I didn't see as big a difference on my evo but I do on the gs3

I've done a few side-by-sides while flashing back and forth. I can't tell the difference personally. The big difference is the volume in the camcorder app though, it's about 1/2 the volume if recorded using the TW camera.

So you find the camcorder to be lower/quieter via TW than AOSP?
What about phone (ear) and speaker phone volume?

The AOSP camera has a noticeably greater shutter lag and lacks the anti-shake feature which is really helpful.

i have flashed back and forth for a long time and TW camera is just a better camera hands down. Ive tested over and over again and the aosp just doesnt add up. Anyone tried the 4.3 aosp cam yet???

I tried the 4.3 camera and didn't like the lack of settings and photosphere did not work for me on CM10.1.

I personally am not a fan of the touchwiz camera, and have used camera zoom fx for the longest while. I just recently began using the aosp 4.2 camera and have grown to really love it's simplicity and picture quality. Swiping to the right to access the gallery is just awesome. I did test the 4.3 camera and really did not like it. It had a lack of options (though it is a leak) and got fc's when switching from front to back cameras.
With any camera, it's all about knowing is options and layout and making your knowledge of the app work for you. Currently aosp is the clear winner for me.

Is the volume issue finally fixed when rec. Video on aosp? That was my biggest concern..

Not sure on that as I almost never record video, but now I'm curious..

For me at least, the TW camera is why I have not flashed any AOSP based ROM. I just love the TW cam to much. I also use my camera a lot which is why I won't let TW go.

[Solved] Stock Camera in non Sense?

I fell in love with Sense 3 on my Evo 3D, but I think I'm over it now. I'm tired of the behemoth ROM downloads, etc.
However, I am in love with this fast focus, pic in video, etc camera that this One S has stock. What can I do ROM wise to cut the fat but keep the amazing camera? I want CM10, but the camera sucks. I understand that the camera is probably something sense framework related isn't it?

Look at the Sense-based ROMs under the development forum. You won't find anything like it in AOSP/AOKP.
Try sense based miui (there are 2 different ones, make sure you get sense based). Personally not a miui user, but sounds like what you may be looking for.

I'll try that out, normally I wouldn't but I'm intrigued on this phone. I can't imagine how sense would mesh with that.
I'm blown away by this camera though. Not to veer the thread off too far but anyone know how to do the burst mode? I found something about limit to 20 shots per second or something like that, but I can't get it to burst
Just keep holding the shutter button down and it will start bursting until you left you finger or reach the limit

Found a great solution to my problem I got Viper One S ROM and unchecked Sense. Kept the lock Ring and the awesome camera

Yeah I was running that for a while. Still doesn't match the speed & smoothness of JB/CM10 (IMO) but true it does give you perks from both. Good news is we get official JB within the next month, so won't have to compromise much longer :victory:
So when official One S JB comes out then cyanogenmod can have the stock camera? I've been running Trickdroid but there's no updates on that and my phone starts to run like crap after a couple weeks. Just put CM10 Back on today, and forgot no good camera.
cm10 camera can do burst mode, but it's very clunky and in the menu.

Camera: CM10 vs 4.0 Sense stock

Hallo guys,
I read on the CM10 dev thread that the camera in that rom isn't as good as the 4.0 Sense stock camera. Can anybody please explain what exactly is the difference between those two camera apps in terms of picture quality, focusing, shutter, velocity and video recording? And why is it not possible to make the camera as good as it is on the stock rom?
Thanks in advance.
Best Regards,

First of all, im not a developer but ive noticed that the cm10 camera loses all the sense software like continuous shutter and shooting photos while recording. Moreover, colors seem to have better contrast and saturation with sense. Can anyone else confirm this?

I think the sense cam makes really good pictures. I use it for snapshots in holidays aswell. I don't wanna miss the good cam, That's why I hesitate to switch to CM10.

I'm no developer too, so i could be wrong.
But as far as i know, this phone has a dedicated chip called 'ImageSense' powering the camera.
So far only the Sense camera app is able to fully utilize this chip, and thus having many features which are not available on AOSP rom's camera app.
As for the AOSP roms, the devs are able to get the camera working, but not able to fully utilise the ImageSense chip.
As for porting the Sense camera app to AOSP roms, i think it is close to impossible because of some framework issue which means the sense camera app only can run on sense roms.
Please correct me if im wrong.
From what I remember reading, HTC also didn't supply the drivers to the ImageSense chip, so it couldn't be integrated into AOSP ROMs. Hence, only Sense based ROMs which already have the drivers built in can fully utilise the ImageSense chip.

[Q] Best Camera on Non-TW

Which camera/camcorder works the best on the Non-TW ROMs? That's one thing I've liked about ROMs based off stock, is that the camera/camcorder always seems to be better on all phones.

What do you mean by "best". If the camera works, it works the same. The only different is in some custom rom, you can do a bit more like disabled the camera sound etc.

Maybe I'm taking pictures wrong but a TW ROM picture look better than a AOSP ROM picture to me. So I was wondering if there is a difference between the AOSP ROMs.
When I'm on an AOSP ROM, I usually use Camera Zoom FX. Got it for like 10 cents back when Google was doing a promo. Good go to cam.

Give this one a spin and report back. It's a apk (no need to flash). It's an S4 for aosp rom. For TW rom just install straight. For AOSP rom, recommend to uninstall your camera first then do the install

So I don't mind sense. But I downloaded a stock ish Rom yesterday and it was 1.2 GB
That's 1 Gb more than cm of stuff I don't use. I like very lean roms that occupy less space and are highly performant.

Sense is awesome. Much more functionality and customization than AOSP although I sometimes do have the urge of running minimalistic AOSP.

Cm
I had cm on Verizon galaxy nexus! I started getting upset at the time it took to get to stable builds.
I doubt AOSP will be able to make the Duo Camera work. So, no special effects like focusing on different parts and other junk like that.
Might as well stick with Sense 6. It seems to be working very well so far.
surprisingly enough i dont mind sense...not the case with that steaming load Samsung calls Touchwiz. I would like to get back to aosp roms but i want the sense camera or one that can utilize the dual camera functions. That wont be long off...htc release the api for the dual camera so there will be options soon enough

HTC wants 3rd party development on the camera. They released an SDK. That may help.
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/htc-releases-dual-lens-sdk-for-the-htc-one-m8-2014/
My issues with sense revolves around the lockscreen and how it handles notification sounds.
With sense in place dashclock, which I prefer, I can't replace the stock lockscreen. Even using AOSP lock screen on Viper is not optimal since my tasker script does not allow me to situationally disable/reenable the lock screen.
There seems to be an issue on how sense handles notifications. I use a third party app to give me situational sound profiles, similar to what is offered in CM. When using it with sense I don't get reliable results. The built in sound profiles in sense aren't flexible enough.
Maybe I've just been using AOSP too long but I find sense too restrictive for how I use my phone.

can the gpe on the international edition not utilize the dual camera functions? if it can, i don;t see why aosp roms cannot just keep the camera driver and the camera app from gpe.
sense is a million times better than the touchwiz garbage, but nothing is a little better than sense.

I actually LIKE Sense (and completely agree about TouchWiz.) I have liked Sense back to the earliest versions but CyanogenMod has been my daily driver for a very long time. I am delighted to see Invisiblek is on the M8 project, I hope CM will be here soon and I'll be switching ROMs as I did with my Galaxy S3 and S4, running CyanogenMod until a problem shows up in a nightly and then switching back to Andybone's most excellent Bonestock ROM until CM gets fixed again. Eventually, CM became perfect (for me) on the Galaxy phones and I could stop switching and I know that's what will happen with the M8.

"Frankly, it'd be silly to have extra hardware on a phone that's completely unusable, so the Google Play edition will still take advantage of the Duo Camera functionality. Predictably, the app itself is the stock Google version, but the HTC magic comes out as soon as you enter the Photos app and try editing your shots. You'll be prompted to open up "HTC Photo Edit," and you'll see a screen that looks much like what you'd find in the Sense gallery, but with fewer options: UFocus, Dimension Plus and Touch Up are the only Duo Camera-esque effects listed, which means the Foregrounder, Seasons and Copy/Paste functions didn't make the cut. (Filters, frames and tools are still hanging out on the right sidebar.) UFocus is our favorite of the Duo Camera options, so we're glad to see it there, but Dimension Plus is a useless and gimmicky feature that we just don't use very often."

it seems like the driver and photo editing software that is the real key behind dual cameras is on gpe so those should port over seamlessly to aosp based roms.

best camera app for non-continuous focus and panoramas

ive been running a TW based ROM on my S5 since i got it and i just love the camera app. That being said, ive been running an AOSP ROM that a good friend of mine developed and i would love to get the quality of the stock TW camera app in an AOSP environment. Ive dealt with some paid apps that just dont deliver. Any suggestions?
That's why I stick with TW roms. Good luck getting the same quality out of any other rom. ?
