Best recommendation for Extended Battery? - Galaxy S 4 Accessories

What is the best extended battery out there right now for the Galaxy S4? I was offered a review sample for the Mugen Power 5500mAH model, and I will most likely take that. In terms of thickness, is the bulge noticeable? And what is a good extended battery that does not require a different cover or protective case? I currently am using a Spigen Slim Armor.

I have the seido 4500mah and I'm happy with it.

Battery is garbage, after a week the battery actually seems to be getting worse. Switched back to stock battery and returning zerolemon 3000mah.

I have the onite 5200 with the Hyperion case. I would look at any of the 5200 ones since you can get the case and have some sort of minimal protection for your phone. On the onite I'll go 2 days straight easily

Avoid. I asked them if their 7000 extended cell was really 7000. They told me it was "7000 peak" and otherwise 5500. That's nonsense. Maximum capacity is was it is. There is no "peak". Current can have peaks. Maximum capacity is a discrete value. These cells are backed by nonsense, and I would suggest avoiding them. Their "3500mAh" cell is likely under 2000 mAh based on my eBay cell instinct.

I have heard good things about the Mugen's quality, and adherence to claimed capacity. Potentially very over priced though, if they're still up above $50.

I have the ZL 3000mAh cell, and the true cell capacity lives up to their claim (mine tested at 2890 on a discharge meter, which is within a fair margin of natural cell to cell variance as far as I'm concerned). If you don't need NFC, then this seems like a great option.

I have lots of experience with MaxPower cells across 4 HTC and Samsung phones. They've always tested poorly, typically holding 600mAh for every 1000mAh they claim (about 40% less capacity than advertised). Expect that cell you linked to to hold around 3600 mAh, and definitely not more than 4000 mAh.

I have read good things about seido and hyperion, but I've never tested one of their cells.
I've tested many iterations of Anker cells, and they've always met their claimed capacity. There's also a brand called EXOpower that I just tested for the S4, and they lived up to claimed capacity, but their NFC circuit doesn't actually work in the S4, despite claims otherwise.
Here's the bottom line:
If you're not going with a brand that has an established reputation for actually matching claimed capacity figures, then the capacity figure is basically just made up. It's irrelevant whether a cell claims 2600, 3000, 3500, etc. If they're all from unknown brands, then those figures mean nothing, and they're not even useful for comparison relative to each other. The claimed figures are truly meaningless.

What are the parameters of the discharge device? The cutoff voltage is an issue with these devices since most of the time they differ greatly from their actual use limit. What did the meter say about the stock battery?

Sprint Extended (Super-Extended?) Battery Avail Yet?

I'm loving my new Diamond on the Sprint network, but the thing just sucks the juice! I'm a data fiend, and it would seem that the battery only lasts about 2-3 hours with me at the controls.
Has anyone seen, or heard any news on a Super-Extended (since it's technically already extended) battery for the Sprint Diamond?
Thanks,

has anyone seen or bought this 2000 mah battery? specs and images look fantastic

Covers look the same.
I can't see a brand name in the image, they just quote "Pwer-Cell". Could be of high quality though, I can't explain the price otherwise .. or maybe the back-cover is indeed the original HTC one. In any case, it is tempting. I was just curious whether anyone tried it.
Cheers
That's very interesting... It's a Mugen Powercell and they are known for high quality extended batteries that are OEM size.. I just picked up my BP E270 and I must say I'm already used to the (very little!) extra thickness - so now to know I could have 2000mAH in the same package - is almost too good to pass up.... Have to save up some more $ though, they aren't cheap and I just shelled out $90 for this one!

Actually this isn't true unfortunately. I just measured the thickness of my diamond with the BP E270, and it comes in at 14mm exactly, whereas the dimensions from the link you provided for the Mugen Powercell 2000mAH come in at 17mm. So the Mugen comes with a 3rd party cover, or at least, a bigger cover than the official extended battery.
I just spoke with mobilefun.co.uk on the phone and they were incredibly helpful and nice. They said they'll call back after they check the warehouse ... and they did! They actually measured the whole thing and described the battery and the back case! this is what they said:
The Diamond with the new battery and cover is about 17 mm thick (you were right).
They said the battery is indeed of high quality and that if i'm not happy with the performance then they will offer a full refund or an exchange.
The battery is about 9.5-10 mm thick and pretty hefty they said.
The back cover is not the original HTC BP E270 but hear this: the cover is all flat along the TD (not like the ones with a hump where the battery is) and feels solid and high quality. I actually prefer a flat back-cover so that the TD becomes more usable when sitting on a desk.
The camera hole is a conic inset and he said it should not cause any bottom shades in pictures from the looks of it (like some of the hump covers do).
All in all, it sounds good to me but I'm eagerly waiting for liamhere's feedback and pictures
I found yet another one, straight from Mugen Power which looks even better. I posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?p=2740174

Motorola Atrix 2 Extended Battery

Received my Motorola Extended Battery just now in the mail, draining it then will recharge fully to test it for full day tomorrow.
First impressions, it adds a little bulk, some protruding from the back. Replacement case has soft touch but doesnt feel as nice as regular back casing.

Hi guys! Can you tell me WHERE you ordered the extended battery? I've been trying to find it everywhere but no luck.
Can you point me in the right direction?
I ordered mine in-store at an at&t store, and got it shipped to my house.
I did order when it said "temporarily out of stock" (as it still does now, sku 40528 on att's site) but it took a couple days to get it sent out.
edit: fixed the sku, though googling for "sku5380297" will still find it faster (can't post a link yet)
Thanks for the info!
Hey Shanghei, have you seen increased battery life? Bimmerd00d isn't, was wondering if that's true for you too.
Moto Atrix 2 extended battery and case/cover
Hello,
I just bought this extended battery for the Atrix 2, and it is awesome!!!
it extends my battery life and I get a full day's charge out of the phone.
I was only getting less than a half day out of regular battery and had to charge it up after lunch... Although I am new to this phone and am trying/figuring things out so I may drain the battery faster than normal, and was considering not keeping the phone since the regular battery drained sooooo fast... But, with this new extended battery I think it is like 2700 mh battery, it makes this phone so nice.
It does not increase the size too much, but is noticeably heavier. I'm talking about the larger Motorola battery from their website or AT&T. I bought it from the AT&T store and am Glad I did... If you need more battery life then I recommend buying this extended battery - you will be glad you did...
I placed an order on the Motorola Store. They are shipping in 4-5 days. Will see how it goes!

Which Motorola store ? I keep popping onto the Motorola site and it still says coming soon. Battery life on the A2's been better then I expected, but I could certainly use more. I really want the battery so that the camera lens is a little more protected without having to get a bulky case.
Does the new back still feel as snug/solid as the original ?
Motorola support told me the phone should still fit with the car and HD docking stations with the extended battery pack. Any idea if this is true ?
& Thanks for the pictures.
The HD docking station has space for the extended battery pack. The car adapter supposedly has a removable "shell" to fit the extended battery.
It does fit pretty snugly, though the bottom part on mine sorta gives in and squeaks a little if you press it in below the settings/home buttons. I could probably put a layer of electrical tape under the battery door to make it feel more solid though it doesn't concern me.
As far as the Motorola store goes, it looks like it shows "coming soon" if you try to get to the battery listing from the atrix 2 page, but if you come at it from the batteries and chargers page, it shows it in stock.
Currently second on the list here and it allows me to add it to my cart.
Another option for those want an extended battery but not quite so extended, mugen power just released an extended battery for the bionic with 2000mAh instead of 1735mAh.
http://www.mugen-power-batteries.co...attery-for-verzion-motorola-droid-bionic.html
(bionic uses the same batteries as the atrix 2, since it's normal size you wouldn't need a battery cover)

Ran through a full charge on both now. It seems the extended and the standard reach 30% at the same time, but the extended one sits at 30% forever. Its simply a calibration thing at this point I think. It took 39hrs to kill the extended and 28 to kill the standard with my normal use
Sent from my Atrix 2.
I belive that if they could create a full bodied case with the extended battery built into it, I would jump on that. I refuse to walk out of the house without my case being attached to it. How do you people do it!!?? No case just walking around all naked and stuff.

I had my iphone 3gs for 2.5+ years with no case (just a vinyl back decal) and traded it in with it still in near perfect condition. I always keep my phone in my front pants pocket, screen towards my thigh (and I don't put change or keys in the same pocket). I only wipe the screen clean with a microfiber cloth, but otherwise, but a good deal of that time I was working as a mechanic, I'm not exactly dainty with my stuff. I tried a case, but they make it more difficult to pull the phone out of my pocket making for more awkward situations.
My only worry without the extended battery is that the camera lens is going to get scratched up every time I set it down.
What's the point in a case? Never had one, never broke/damaged/scratched a phone in 6 years.
Really? Is that even possible.? I am about the most OCD person I know with phone care and I HAVE to use a case. My favs are the Otterbox Commuter, Speck and some Casemates.
Have to say the extended battery looks like it adds a lot of bulk to the back. Will that really be necessary with the size of the battery in the A2?
Yeah, it doesn't have the softback texture does it? The positive thing I suppose is that it would keep the camera glass off of surfaces so you don't have to clean it off as often.

Otterbox + Extended Battery Case?

The phone is a lot heavier after, size wise, it turns it into Note 2 territory, just a little bit under it. (hence why the minute GN3 comes out, im ditching this piece of crap), but meanwhile will have to suffer.
The battery itself is just a doubled battery, but it adds just about 1.5 times the thickness to the phone.
I ordered 3 things.
Anker Extended Battery
Otterbox Defender Case
Extra Battery Cover
So first things first, mark out the where your going to cut, no point being all over the place. I just used a marker to color the battery and pressed the phone against the otterbox which left colored markings on the otterbox back cover where I needed to cut.
I used a hair fan to heat and soften both covers, then using a flat head screw driver made a series of dents along the cutting path to weaken the plastic. Then just cut the thing out using a small caring knife.
After the Otterbox hole was made, I fitted my 2nd back cover, then the otterbox and made an outline where the cutting had to be done. Made a series of dents and cut it out.
Also used a bit of sandpaper to get smoother edges and get the lines correct, but anyway. Its all done. Pics below

There is a tiny hump on the back, but compared to the stock battery cover that comes with all the extended batteries, but compared to the otterbox, its a lot more comfortable to hold and no one even knows, unless you point it out to them.

Using it as a smartphone im coming from galaxy note 2 so screen brightness up and wifi on all day is normal. It was 8 hours with 4 hours of screen on time.
Ordered an Anker Extended battery from Amazon and going to pick the Otter box up on Tuesday and see can this work. Battery is about 5mm, whole case is just under 15mm. So by doing some DYI could fit.
I've seen some nice mods for Galaxy Note 2, wouldn't even notice it had an extended battery when using an otter box and cutting holes out for the battery

I have the same things ordered and I am going to modify it as soon as I get my Verizon unit on Tuesday so I will have pictures soon. Even if there is a little more bulge, I am still gonna do it.

Not really bothered about NFC as I haven't made use of the NFC tags yet, only couple of times I used it was to Beam a picture to my mother phone the odd time so no biggie, but it does have the NFC functionality.
For anyone interested THIS is what I've ordered. Its an Anker battery, had 4 of these bad boys in my GN2 and they performed excellently.
Tbh I doubt NFC will work great anyway with the Otter box as any time I tried using with a case on, it was fairly hard to get a connection between the two phones.
Galaxy Note 2's and Galaxy S4 + Note 2.
Hopefully Zero Lemon wont take that much longer and bring out a proper extended battery!

Here's my mod
I followed suit from the S3 and did the otterbox + extended battery mod. I just ordered an oem back from ebay.
Got my Anker extended battery. Have to say even though the hump is thicker than the phone itself, it's more comfortable to hold the phone. Got a nice big area to rest my right hand thumb on the side now, ads a bit of weight to the phone, but won't cry over it as it will save me of carrying around a charger with me.
Now to get an Otterbox on Saturday

the phone just feels better when its bigger like that.

Finished my first day with the extended battery. 18 hours of battery life.
75% screen brightness
5 hours of screen on.

Couple of hours of spotify and some video

Anker battery you linked
The Anker battery you linked is not available off of Amazon in the USA. Has anyone bought one off of Amazon USA recently? There's no indication if it will be available anytime soon so I'd like to know if anyone has gotten one off Amazon in the USA.
So the Anker battery and case just snaps on easily onto the back of the Galaxy S4? And fits into the Otterbox defender without any modifications?
Thanks for all the information you've provided.

My Otterbox Defender + Extended Battery Mod

So I got the idea from a couple guys on here to order the extended battery for my S4 and modify the otterbox defender case to hold the larger battery. Well finally got to do my project and I took pics along the way so I figured I would right up a tutorial on how I did it.
So I ended up getting the Hyperion 5200mAh extended battery off amazon.

Then I purchased the Otterbox Defender case from amazon.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00C96CMDG/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1370834800&sr=8-1&pi=SL75
Things you will need:
-Dremel
-Dry erase marker
-and about 30 mins of your time
Here is my step by steps:
1. I took the otterbox and cut a small hole with the dremel (basically the inside where there wasn't the soft pad)
2. After you cut the start hole it will allow you to line up the case to the phone with the extended battery in the phone. Then trace out then hole with the dry erase marker to the battery. Once you have traced it then removed the battery and line up your trace marks and flip case over holding the battery and trace the inside.
3. Once you cut it test fit it to make sure you don't need to trim any more.
4. Now you need to trace and cut the same hole on the stock back case so the phone will set properly in the otterbox. So trace and cut that case just like you did the otterbox.
5. Once both cases are cut, put phone back cover on, and otterbox, and insert battery.
Now continue building the case.
That's all there is too it. Some finished pictures and comparison to extended battery case.

This was awesome, thanks for sharing! I just did this today, and all I would add is DON'T use a cordless Dremel .... I had to stop and recharge so often! Awesome post, perfect results, thanks!

I've done this a few times and got through the case in one shot each time lol but i've never been worried about being perfect since the silicon covers it anyway....
Good job, but I won't be bothered doing it. Have you searched for battery cover with extended battery? It would be more easy to buy it than doing your project

The whole point is to have a stylish case instead of those bulky generic extended cases. This is much, much better to have. Trust me

Yeah that was the whole point. It did come with the back cover, and they sell the rubber covers to cover them. But they are super cheap and I didn't want that. The otterbox mod worked perfectly and I rocked that battery for almost 3 days. It was worth it to have the protection of a nice case in addition to the large battery.
nice ,looks great, otterbox is a great brand
Such an innovative idea! I'll have to try this with my Anker 7800mah external battery.

Anyone got an extra ma 5200 or 7500 mah battery they want to sell? Looking to buy one and do this mod
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
Hi, i would want to fit 7500mhA Hyperion battery in Otterbox Defender or other cases modifying properly them.
But I'm wondering why here:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00BCJZYE0?pc_redir=1400591125&robot_redir=1
you have a battery with same size of 5200mhA Hyperion battery and in description it has written clearly that the battery has the same size (then it is not a wrong pic) and here:
http://phabletdiscounts.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=hyperion+7500mhA
you have the same capacity battery for s4 but the size is different.
Are these two different models?
Because I have been following this thread to fit the 7500mhA battery in Otterbox and i bought the battery in second link and then perhaps I cannot fit my battery.
Can someone confirm this?
A second question about the length of this battery: doesn't it cover the speaker of phone?

The anker 7800 works on the defender modification correct ?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
This case mod will not work with the anker 7800 mah battery. The neo-glove will not fit over it like it will with the hyperion 5200. I just tried it. Any ideas on a third party case that will fit the 7800 mah?
loool this is awesome... good job!
So I am looking at trying this out, I am looking at this otterbox
It looks a bit different
http://www.amazon.com/Otterbox-Defe...ung+Galaxy+S4+Case+-+OtterBox+Defender+Series
This is battery which i wanna use, it says it is the same size, not sure if its true or not.
http://www.amazon.com/Hyperion-Micr...2&keywords=Hyperion+Samsung+Galaxy+S4+7500mAh
So, with your modification, the battery is actually only being held in by the outer rubber cover of the otterbox and no hard case... correct? If so, seems the battery would be easy to jiggle lose or be damaged by a single drop. Am I missing something?

Looking for that good Extended Battery + Case/Bumper Combo. Anyone?

Really wanting one of the 5000mah+ Batteries...but My fears are my precious S4 falling to it's doom due to the lack of grip most crappy exteneded battery cover cases provide.
I'm looking for either a strong bumper...and or a case that will work with any of the good brand extended batteries.
Thanks

Seidio is getting ready to launch their Active case in a version that accommodates their excellent 4500 mAh cell. If you haven't checked it out already it's worth considering.
For what it's worth, a Seidio 4500 will usually far outlast most other brands at higher mAh ratings. They're pricey, but you get what you pay for.

Ain't that the truth. I paid 105 for their combo deal with the Evo 3D. Was worth every penny out in the field.

Whoa, that's amazing. But it has no NFC right?
Get the extended Zerolemon. $40 with a case and one full charge lasts around 60 hours with 12 hours screen time.
The best bang for your buck.

It's TPU plastic, so it feels slightly rubberized. It has more grip than the phone itself, but doesn't cause too much friction with putting the phone in your pockets.
I found the extra weight helps keep the phone in your hand. Additionally if you look at the shape of the case, the camera recess is a very convenient finger hold.

Nice.
Having a tough time believing that. Mine comes in tomorow ill see. But that seems like the battery life of a 7000 mah batt.

Got pretty similar results with the ZL 3000mAH. 6 hrs talk-time prevented me from breaking 1d battery life.
Seidio 4500 mAh, two movies streamed and normal talk, web, text.
Heres the results of my ZL 3000 after its 6 cycles. All Chrome browsing, text, email, and Facebook. Auto Brightness
