My Otterbox Defender + Extended Battery Mod - Galaxy S 4 Accessories

So I got the idea from a couple guys on here to order the extended battery for my S4 and modify the otterbox defender case to hold the larger battery. Well finally got to do my project and I took pics along the way so I figured I would right up a tutorial on how I did it.
So I ended up getting the Hyperion 5200mAh extended battery off amazon.

Then I purchased the Otterbox Defender case from amazon.

Things you will need:
-Dremel
-Dry erase marker
-and about 30 mins of your time
Here is my step by steps:
1. I took the otterbox and cut a small hole with the dremel (basically the inside where there wasn't the soft pad)
2. After you cut the start hole it will allow you to line up the case to the phone with the extended battery in the phone. Then trace out then hole with the dry erase marker to the battery. Once you have traced it then removed the battery and line up your trace marks and flip case over holding the battery and trace the inside.
3. Once you cut it test fit it to make sure you don't need to trim any more.
4. Now you need to trace and cut the same hole on the stock back case so the phone will set properly in the otterbox. So trace and cut that case just like you did the otterbox.
5. Once both cases are cut, put phone back cover on, and otterbox, and insert battery.
Now continue building the case.
That's all there is too it. Some finished pictures and comparison to extended battery case.

I've done this a few times and got through the case in one shot each time lol but i've never been worried about being perfect since the silicon covers it anyway....

Good job, but I won't be bothered doing it. Have you searched for battery cover with extended battery? It would be more easy to buy it than doing your project

The whole point is to have a stylish case instead of those bulky generic extended cases. This is much, much better to have. Trust me

Yeah that was the whole point. It did come with the back cover, and they sell the rubber covers to cover them. But they are super cheap and I didn't want that. The otterbox mod worked perfectly and I rocked that battery for almost 3 days. It was worth it to have the protection of a nice case in addition to the large battery.

nice ,looks great, otterbox is a great brand

Such an innovative idea! I'll have to try this with my Anker 7800mah external battery.

Anyone got an extra ma 5200 or 7500 mah battery they want to sell? Looking to buy one and do this mod
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk

Hi, i would want to fit 7500mhA Hyperion battery in Otterbox Defender or other cases modifying properly them.
But I'm wondering why here:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00BCJZYE0?pc_redir=1400591125&robot_redir=1
you have a battery with same size of 5200mhA Hyperion battery and in description it has written clearly that the battery has the same size (then it is not a wrong pic) and here:
http://phabletdiscounts.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=hyperion+7500mhA
you have the same capacity battery for s4 but the size is different.
Are these two different models?
Because I have been following this thread to fit the 7500mhA battery in Otterbox and i bought the battery in second link and then perhaps I cannot fit my battery.
Can someone confirm this?
A second question about the length of this battery: doesn't it cover the speaker of phone?

The anker 7800 works on the defender modification correct ?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk

This case mod will not work with the anker 7800 mah battery. The neo-glove will not fit over it like it will with the hyperion 5200. I just tried it. Any ideas on a third party case that will fit the 7800 mah?

loool this is awesome... good job!

So I am looking at trying this out, I am looking at this otterbox
It looks a bit different
http://www.amazon.com/Otterbox-Defe...ung+Galaxy+S4+Case+-+OtterBox+Defender+Series
This is battery which i wanna use, it says it is the same size, not sure if its true or not.
http://www.amazon.com/Hyperion-Micr...2&keywords=Hyperion+Samsung+Galaxy+S4+7500mAh

So, with your modification, the battery is actually only being held in by the outer rubber cover of the otterbox and no hard case... correct? If so, seems the battery would be easy to jiggle lose or be damaged by a single drop. Am I missing something?

I have the Seidio Extended Value Pack case that I picked up when I bought my extended battery.
Sorry, can't post URL. Paste this after their domain name:
product-p/bd5-hkr5htmecx.htm
When we bought Thunderbolts for our office we bought the Verizon case pictured elsewhere in this thread.
For daily use, I like the Verizon case better. For one, it allows you to use the built-in metal kick stand. The Seidio case covers it up and gives you a cheap plastic kickstand. This adds extra bulk that really isn't necessary.
The Seidio combo give you all kinds of options and can provide great protection. I took my Thunderbolt off-line in the Rockies for GPS and movies and never worried about it being damaged. But, the combo I have means three layers of casing when rubberized. They now have some better options, though.
Overall, I feel the Verizon case does a great job.

dang, that looks bad a$$, wish i would have known about that before i bought my seidio case. I love my seidio, but being able to use the tbolt kickstand, instead of the plastic one is nice.
I have the extended battery too and the only decent case selection that suited me has the cut out for the batt door to stick through....kinda sux.
My verizon provided screen protector got a key scratch day one. do you find that those shields work well enough as a case?

If you're referring to the full body shields I love them.. I've used a lot of different cases for a lot of phones but as long as your careful not to drop the phone from a good distance then these are perfect. Adds no bulk, prevents scratches, and I personally like the added grip it provides.

Also if anyone is wondering, I ended up cutting the protector for the back of the phone (standard battery) into two pieces. Covered up the top half before the lip for the battery starts then used the bottom half to cover the top of the little hump.

Powerskin Review, good pics, my charging solution.

Hey everyone
Just got my powerskin today, very happy with it! It's pretty much the only "juice pack" type of product available for the Sensation.

The PowerSkin capacity is 1500mAh, inside of the phone I have the Anker 1900mAh, for a total capacity of 3400mAh!
Mugen 3600mAh extended battery $104.95!
My Solution
______________________
PowerSkin for $49.62 (direct from powerskin it's 59.99)
Anker battery for $8.99 free shipping
total cost $58.61
50% savings pretty much!
In terms of the case, you can obviously see it's as thick as a pack of cigarettes but that will only really tell smokers how thick it is lol, just trying to give you an idea. It's really smooth feeling so it slides in the pocket very easily. I also like the function that if I hold the button on the back for 2 seconds, It turns off the powerpack from charging the phone, I also didn't think it would show by LED light how much power the case had but it does, SWEET!
The fit is absolutely precise, although how well that fit will be maintained I cant say because I just got it, the material right at the edges feels a little "floppy" but that's not really a negative at this point. All in all hope the pics help, any other questions feel free to ask!
Enjoy!
thanks for posting this, although I'm turned off by the buldge on the side, I'm sure other uses will find this review very informative

I am growing to like it actually because the bulge with the divot allows my thumb to comfortably grip it
I picked one of these up for $30 with the T-Mobile 50% off coupon a while back. My complaint is that the micro USB connector doesn't have retention barbs. When I would put it in my pocket, sometimes the connector would come out just enough to break the connection between the skin and my phone and the skin would stop charging the phone. With that said, out comes in handy for leaving it charged and in my glove compartment for emergencies.

...that's what she said.
(on topic) I had one of these for my MT4G and gave it up. It's just too bulky and I couldn't really justify the discomfort for the actual usage I needed from the phone. I found it easier with the S4G to just get the 2x1900mAh Anker Batteries+charger combo. I think I'll stick with that in the future vs buying the powerskin. My case gives me better protection anyway.
I used to have the PowerSkin... well... I still do have it, but it died in less than a week. Won't charge or anything. Just dead.

KLD Product Info said the Case is made by thin cast aluminum (Photo ~ Line B),
Can you please check out for us if it's true...?
I guess Wireless Charging & NFC Signal will be blocked by the aluminum.
How do you like the fitting?
Will it scratch the phone when install, take out..?
Thanks...!

I think this is the best feature of the Google bumper. It incorporates keypressers so pressing the buttons is not as difficult as cases that have simple cutouts. Would love to see a flip case with buttons similar to the stock bumper.
So, elty123, 10 days since you started this thread. Have you already received your order? We want some insights!
Does anyone have this case yet? I'm thinking of getting the pink one, not many femine covers out for this phone yet.
Still waiting for this case. Not sure if this will work from wireless charger, but my HP Touchpad works with the Touchstone even with a case on. This should be similar I guess.
Finally got the red case. build quality is pretty good, and it is nice to touch. However, it doesn't really look like leather - more like.texture plastic. I think It would look better if it is not a bright peachy red.
I don't know if there is a thin cast aluminum inside, however the cover is pretty sturdy. It also doesn't seems to lower reception strength when the case is opened. I have no wireless charger to test.

What can you say about the cuts to access the buttons? I heard they are quite narrow in the Nilkin case, making it a bit hard to press them.
And this is the first flip cover I use, and sometimes the cover doesn't close completely.... is it a problem for other flip cover?

Yep, pretty common.
The cut is not very clean (some residual plastic). Pressing the power is ok but the volume is a bit harder, probably because of the spine.
The texture of the cover is the same as the picture... just that it is a bit more shiny than I thought.
Also closing the cover seems to reduce signal strength by a few dBm. I can't really tell because the signal strength fluctuate a lot here, even without any case.
I ordered this case because it looks realllllly nice. I chose this over the nillkin because I wanted it in brown.

Otterbox + Extended Battery Case?

The phone is a lot heavier after, size wise, it turns it into Note 2 territory, just a little bit under it. (hence why the minute GN3 comes out, im ditching this piece of crap), but meanwhile will have to suffer.
The battery itself is just a doubled battery, but it adds just about 1.5 times the thickness to the phone.
I ordered 3 things.
Anker Extended Battery
Otterbox Defender Case
Extra Battery Cover
So first things first, mark out the where your going to cut, no point being all over the place. I just used a marker to color the battery and pressed the phone against the otterbox which left colored markings on the otterbox back cover where I needed to cut.
I used a hair fan to heat and soften both covers, then using a flat head screw driver made a series of dents along the cutting path to weaken the plastic. Then just cut the thing out using a small caring knife.
After the Otterbox hole was made, I fitted my 2nd back cover, then the otterbox and made an outline where the cutting had to be done. Made a series of dents and cut it out.
Also used a bit of sandpaper to get smoother edges and get the lines correct, but anyway. Its all done. Pics below

There is a tiny hump on the back, but compared to the stock battery cover that comes with all the extended batteries, but compared to the otterbox, its a lot more comfortable to hold and no one even knows, unless you point it out to them.

Using it as a smartphone im coming from galaxy note 2 so screen brightness up and wifi on all day is normal. It was 8 hours with 4 hours of screen on time.
Ordered an Anker Extended battery from Amazon and going to pick the Otter box up on Tuesday and see can this work. Battery is about 5mm, whole case is just under 15mm. So by doing some DYI could fit.
I've seen some nice mods for Galaxy Note 2, wouldn't even notice it had an extended battery when using an otter box and cutting holes out for the battery

id love to have an otterbox + extended battery.
I have the same things ordered and I am going to modify it as soon as I get my Verizon unit on Tuesday so I will have pictures soon. I did this to my note 2 which I am currently using and it works amazingly well and you can't tell it's even on there under the silicone. Hopefully the s4 is the same way. Even if there is a little more bulge, I am still gonna do it.
I did it to my Note 2 as well. Also using a Zerolemon 9300mah Battery. Talk about beast! Can't do anything to the S4. The wife won't let me haha..

Not really bothered about NFC as I haven't made use of the NFC tags yet, only couple of times I used it was to Beam a picture to my mother phone the odd time so no biggie, but it does have the NFC functionality.
For anyone interested THIS is what I've ordered. Its an Anker battery, had 4 of these bad boys in my GN2 and they performed excellently.
Tbh I doubt NFC will work great anyway with the Otter box as any time I tried using with a case on, it was fairly hard to get a connection between the two phones.
Galaxy Note 2's and Galaxy S4 + Note 2.
Hopefully Zero Lemon wont take that much longer and bring out a proper extended battery!

I followed suit from the S3 and did the otterbox + extended battery mod. I just ordered an oem back from ebay.
Got my Anker extended battery. Have to say even though the hump is thicker than the phone itself, it's more comfortable to hold the phone. Got a nice big area to rest my right hand thumb on the side now, ads a bit of weight to the phone, but won't cry over it as it will save me of carrying around a charger with me.
Now to get an Otterbox on Saturday
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
i must say i had the same reaction with my old S3, when i bought the Hyperion Extended Battery + TPU Case....
the phone just feels better when its bigger like that.
nice brand, but im still going to wait for ZeroLemon
Finished my first day with the extended battery. 18 hours of battery life.
75% screen brightness
5 hours of screen on.
Media server half day
Data on half day, then WiFi when I got home
Couple of hours of spotify and some video
I'll be getting the zero lemon as well, but meanwhile. This will do

Mmm it is! Read the thread...
oh sorry didn't see much will reread to see what I need to do.
Anker battery you linked
The Anker battery you linked is not available off of Amazon in the USA. Has anyone bought one off of Amazon USA recently? There's no indication if it will be available anytime soon so I'd like to know if anyone has gotten one off Amazon in the USA.
So the Anker battery and case just snaps on easily onto the back of the Galaxy S4? And fits into the Otterbox defender without any modifications?
Thanks for all the information you've provided.

Review of the trident Electra Case

Hey all.
I am really happy with this case I just wanted to share my experience with you all. This case is bulky it added an extra battery in the case and a good amount of protection similar to otter box. There is a mirco usb port that is always in your phone. It fits and seals well so no dust will ever get in the port. There is another 2600 mAh battery that sits in the case and once you push a button it will charge up your phone battery so really you would have 5200 mAh. There is a micro usb port built into the case. Once you plug the charger into it both batteries charge, so there is no need to take the case off to charge. The only thing I feel is lacking is a rubber cover for the cases usb port. I dont mind the extra bulk because of the protection it gives. If you are looking for a thin power case exolife or powerskin have good ones. I took a few pics that will give you some views that are not on thier website. If you are interested in this case I found 2 good coupon codes. "Summer13" gives you 35% and if that doesnt work "GOV13" gives you 30% off. I am not affiliated with trident and I paid for my case but I love thier products. http://www.tridentcase.com/shop-products/electra-case-samsung-galaxy-s-i-v.aspx

It sure does. The phone sits in a silicone case then put on the front cover that has a built in screen protector. Then install into the base as shown in my pics.

Is the micro usb cable flushed inside when the case is all built up? I'm concerned that may be when the phone drops with the micro usb port/case cable facing down, it damages the port itself.
Also can you compare it's thickness to a credit card so we can see how thick it is?
I'm really interested in this case and I'm happy that finally someone has it already

Not the greatest pics but...
The usb isnt flush but it has a rubber base and when I insert it it seems to stop before bottoming out in the usb port. To be honest its a pretty thick case. Its a business card in the
pic.

It'll make a great travel case!

Interesting. A Kraken with a built in battery. Nice that the battery is removable.
have you tried anything which uses NFC/Google Wallet? Curious if that still works.

I haven't tried the nfc or wallet. I have all that turned off, I never used it. I did notice where the extra battery sits there are 3 prongs for connection to the battery.

Wondering about using a 3000mah zero lemon battery in both the phone and the extra one in the case. 6000mah would be nice and still have a nice tough case. I like the big 7500mah battery they make, except no one seem to make a good case that will fit it.
can you take a picture of it from the side view for thickness and perhaps a quarter (which a lot of people have been using as a reference)?
Thanks.

Trying to find a drop rating on it, but so far no luck.
The kracken is rated at 810f - which is 2 meter drop I think.
A normal extended battery case with the cheap hyperion TPU case is about half a cm smaller, so I imagine it must be able to withstand at least 810g (4 foot fall).

Yes, I am using it as my primary case. I need the extra protection and battery life. The battery life of my s4 is actually pretty good but I do a lot of internet radio when I work. Its nice to have the extra battery power when I'm at work. I'm not sure the quality of the extra battery but if I start to have issues I can just remove the battery out of the case and put in a known quality battery.
