Hey guys I have xperia x10 and interested in this phone. How is this phone? Or should I wait a few weeks to get Motorola atrix or nexus s.

I'd wait for the next round of phones that are coming out. I'd actually pass on the Atrix, simply because Motorola insists on giving it to us with an encrypted bootloader.
I would definitely not get a Captivate. given that new phones are coming out.
I would even tell myself back in September not to get a Captivate and wait for the phones that are coming out now, it's that bad.
Samsung basically stuck us with 2.1 (unless you do a custom ROM) and more or less once they sell you a phone kiss you goodbye for support for it etc.
Oh yeah, and if a phone has been known to have GPS issues, and you read an official Samsung tweet that their new update fixed GPS, don't believe it.
Stay away from anything Samsung.
Ya, I love this phone, its bad ass. But if you're looking to trade up, give it a little time and wait, this one age hardware wise pretty soon with the new ones coming out.
X10 is not a bad phone to hold on to until something you really like is released. Fyi - I love my captivate. Just disappointed in samsung. With custom roms this phone is great, imo.

Given the state of [smart]mobile devices today, what can you really say "I'm gonna wait for ____ phone to come out and be content"?
Sure, if you're in the market for a new device you can ALWAYS say "wait for the next round", but the truth of the matter is that there aren't a lot of devices that will be relevant for 10 months. This was one of the things I sat on for months prior to actually buying the Captivate.......mobile providers don't expect you to keep your device for the full 2 years.
I would definitely NOT get a Captivate unless you plan on rooting. That being said, if you don't want to root your phone, if you just plan on living an a stock environment, why don't you just get an iPhone? I mean, what is the point of having an open-source device if you never take advantage of it?
When I was running the stock Captivate it was horrible and I would've killed someone by now if I was waiting on the carrier or manufacturer to feed me (updates). Unfortunately, that is the world we live in. I must say that (I rooted the device within a week of my purchase), I wouldn't trade my Cap in for anything else right now, not even the Atrix. It is more than capable and this is my first Android device, so its not like I'm an experienced ROM loader. I don't have any issues with GPS, calls are fine, I can clock at over 1500 running Firebird2 and Cognition 2.3 (running FroYo). The only "issue" I have is some legacy mp3's won't play (that apparently no one else has this issue) and I'm rather disappointed in the quality of the speaker (after running a few sound amplifier apps).
Skip the Captivate. If you like the sony ericsson phones, wait for the x12's. They're supposed to be out in late March/early April and they look pretty nice.

When getting an Atrix, it's cheaper to get the phone + computer combo. But why get it if you already have a laptop or tablet? great specs but I would wait a little longer for the next wave of phones.

From what I have seen in researching the Atrix is that if you want the "laptop" dock you MUST pay for the Data Pro with Tether add-on. Otherwise you can pay the $499 just for the dock later on and will not be required to add tethering.
My problem with this setup and fee structure is that the dock is not a separate PC that uses the Atrix as an AP or external modem. You cannot use it without the Atrix docked because what you see on the screen is being generated by the phone. So what are you really tethering? Not the laptop since you are still browsing with the phone, just with an external monitor and keyboard... WTF? Do they think we are that stupid?

I'd pass on the captivate.....the atrix comes out tomorrow and the inspire is available now.....I'd get one of those before I'd get the captivate....the inspire is insanely fast and smooth and offers the Sense experience, which is great.....and the atrix is insanely powerful.
I have a love/hate relationship with my phone.
Stock ROM is "ancient" now - and AT&T has delayed any software updates for over 6 mos. now.
Plagued with hardware issues - random shutdowns, sleeping death, charge death, corrupt internal SD Cards, and of course a non-working GPS/Compass.
To make this phone work as intended you will "HAVE" to run a custom ROM to get all of the features - that should have worked out of the box mind you - to work properly.
And.. just a personal peeve - the plastic is slick - so I would suggest getting a case. Otherwise it's like holding a greased pig.
But on the positive - the screen is gorgeous, battery life is decent, and once you get it up and running its a great device.
So... uh no I wouldn't suggest getting a Captivate.
The stock Cap is not good at all. But those haven't rooted and flashed custom Roms are missing the boat. The custom ROMS are easy to flash and open up a whole new side to the Captivate!
Mine with the kick butt Paragon rom will run rings around an iphone any day. I've had them side by side.

The new Sonys will be even slower than the old Samsungs, and with less nice screens to boot.
Better camera, but who cares?
Get the Atrix (out tomorrow) or wait for the SGS2 -- Super AMOLED+ dual-core with (likely) unencrypted bootloader. Hopefully the US will get Tegra2 versions for better custom kernel development.

Yeah I think it's all backwards. The laptop dock can't be used without the Atrix which already makes it useless most of the time. That's why I was saying you might as well get a tablet. Why use a "laptop" running off a device that is suppose to be portable. That is what a real laptop is for.
Haha yeah just get a tablet / netbook / laptop instead of that atrix laptop dock.
Anyway, I think you should just wait 'till better phones are released. But if you can't, then yeah get the captivate but be prepared to void your warranty.
Honestly, like every one has said, it depends of if you plan to run stock or not. This is my first time to root a phone and I will never go back to stock again. My cappy is super fast and does everything I could ever want. My old 3g is comparable to a pager now.
But if you want to run stock, the captivate is DEFINATELY not for you. It took me about three days to decide that 2.1 just wouldn't cut it and start doing the research about rooting and flashing.
It is a very capable phone if you're willing to put some time into it.

Yes i know that the Galaxy S is an old device, which already exceeded the 18 months of software update. But well, what happens to its other brother? The Galaxy S Super Clear LCD i9003 which launched about the same time as the Galaxy S2, and the Galaxy S Plus which have not even exceeded 6 months,and the recently Galaxy W,what would happen to them?And also, the Galaxy S have so much similarities to the Nexus S, which had its Ice Cream Sandwich update about 1 week ago.

The market is just a joke now - the devices are all junk really. Everybody can get one now because they're free on contract, and that has totally killed the value of a "smartphone", even if we can get them cheaper now. For this reason, there's no need to cry over spilled milk. I had an HTC Diamond from 2009 up until this year, when it wasn't worth it to repair because the market screwed itself so badly. I (sadly) carry around a Samsung Epic (the superior of all the Galaxy S series), but it'll never be able to replace the magic of Windows Mobile that our quickly moving market/retarded Microsoft has frowned upon.

and with their locked bootloader you can't even load custom ROMs
HTC is heading the same way as Moto

people who care about receiving the latest update would be on forums like this - by extension you will have dabbled with custom roms.
samsung gave their reason why they couldn't put ICS on the older devices - it involves touchwiz, which is their core skin - samsung aren't going to ditch it for their non nexus devices anytime soon (otherwise every android handset would really be "the same as the next").
load a custom rom with no skins onto your phone and stop complaining, or buy a new device. nobody guaranteed you any updates to the latest firmware - and hell, i wouldn't be surprised if the galaxy s 2 won't receive an update to android letter "J" because the screen resolution is too small or something.
Stop whining and get a new device. I was once a Galaxy S user, and have been through the Eclair, Froyo and Gingerbread era. I am more than satisfied to have this phone supported until Gingerbread. Besides, I can flash the ported ICS rom if I want to.

Spot on! Most of the average consumer don't give a damn about what android version they are using, the manufacturer skin and other stuff about that. As long as the phone is works just nice, then they don't care about the versions they are using. I even saw phones (Xperia X8) still stuck at 2.1 and yet the phone works just fine. Did the phone render unusable for not having 4.0? No right? If those guys (especially techies) still whine about manufacturers not giving updates or some sort why don't they flash a custom rom? Problem Solved.

BTW Sammy is one of the most dev-friendly manufacturers out there. They tried to make everything open source, having an open bootloader and even gave SGS2s to CM7 developers. They hired Steve Kondik (The guy who worked on the popular CyanogenMod Rom) too. Unlike HTC which locks down bootloaders on their devices and lied about it about the bootloader unlock thingy.

First of all, please do not double post, all that does is clutter up the forum.
Anyways, you should do your reading, everything you asked cold be answered by looking around the forum for a few minutes. This phone has always been a pain for development, but it has gotten some new love lately and is picking up. That said, if you have the money you are much better off with a newer phone with better specs and more open development.
Santa Claus gave me a SW2 (it wasn't on my whish list, but I'm really happy with it); but I'm owning a MotoFail Atrix 4G which is stucked to GingerBread (I hate you Motorola ).
Having played too much with my CM 7 installed, I had switched the CM 10.1 for test purpose to see if it's ready fo daily use. But some features are missing me (BT hand free, battery life, app opps), even if the Olympus Kernel Project & epinter have done great job :good: ; I was thinking on switching back to CM 7.
So I'm in a big delemna:
doing along with CM 10 and its limitations
leaving my SW2 in its box till Olympus Kernel has reached the Beta stage
So is there a way to use the SW2 with GB, even with restrictions/limited features ?
And what about CM 9. SW2 should work with Android 4.0 and higher....

Unfortunatly CM9 & CM10 share the same base Kernel, made by the great Olympus Kernel Team
I also must confess that, if I've choosen CM10 over CM9 is because:
I'm loyal to epinter (he was the provider of my CM7 beta ROMs)
I rather like to make a big jump instead of little steps (even if switching to Kernel 3.1 is a big jump in itself)
But you're right, CM9 could be an alternative, I need to look over the CM9 thread to read to status (limitation / bugs) of the ROM made by krystianp.
I have a simpler suggestion.. Get a new phone to replace the obsolete POS phone you have...

Thanks for the advice, I haven't think on that before you suggest it (sorry for being ironic / rude); but the little problem is that I don't have 300+ buks to put on a new mid-sized phone. I've kept my previous phone 4+ years, and I was planning to kept my 250€-Atrix about the same period (it's only 1.5 YO at the moment). If you're ok, I could give you a Paypal link for a donation. Or I also accept one of your retired phones (e.g. S3, Z1)

I would love to donate one of my old phones to you but I sold all of them... Get a contract if you can't afford to pay the full cost upfront..
There is really nothing u can do if you CM is not complete.. Wait or sell your moto and get a new phone.. God knows how it was even worth €250...

I'm in the same place with my Motorola Droid 3, running Android 2.3.6. I suspect there are more of us out there, but don't post because we are sick of the usual reply of "get a new phone". If everyone here did that, there would be no need for this forum.......
I'm still using the charge for my daily driver. The original one I had died and for $50 and a trip to ebay, I'm back in business.
The phone is EP5 with tweaked 3.2. The phone works but has lag and the ROM is loosing support. I know about Tweaked lite 1.0 but the themes and boot animations are missing...
It has been a long time since I've shopped phones and am starting to think about it again. Now I have some questions:
1. Since I have Verizon's unlimited data, I have to buy phones outright in order to keep data. What phones are worth buying now or waiting for?
2. If I buy a new phone like the galaxy S5, how easy will it be to root? Will I have to wait for a ROM to be developed or can I just add root to the stock phone?
3. What are the benefits of kitkat versus the old OS that charge has?
4. Why do phone manufactures insist that bigger is better? I like the size of the charge and if I get another phone the same size, I am forced to get a "less than the best" model.
5. With flash no longer being supported on android, has someone cooked a batch that will work with kitkat or are we SOL? I do use the phone every year to watch football games online. It sucks that I live out of market for the Vikings and am stuck with Jets, bills and other teams I could care less about.
I think that's about it. I guess I'm just weary of shelling out hundreds of dollars to get a new phone when the one I have does most of the stuff I want.

I upgraded from the Charge to the Note 3 in December. While the Charge was a good starter phone for me, I was chomping at the bit for a new phone.
1. I love my Note 3, but it is BIG.
2. Since Verizon hasn't released the s5, don't know about rooting it. However, if past behavior is any guide, the Note 3 has a locked bootloader so you can't flash kernels(no ASOP). I rooted it with Kingo and have safestrap installed to test non-stock roms.
3. I have the kitkat version of PacRom on my Galaxy Tab2 7.0; I've noticed very little difference between 4.4 and 4.3.
4. That kind of bugs me too, they should have a Galaxy s5 Mini with the same specs but a smaller screen. On the other hand, the new phones are thinner and the larger screens look really nice. Also I have "old eyes", hence the Note 3(I also like the S-pen).
5. It could be worse, you could have TWO teams leave your market the same year(damn Rams and Raiders). My understanding that discontinuing Flash support was more of an Adobe decision. Other than that I've got nothing.
Did I mention I love my Note 3?

#3 My comparison was based on 4.3 vs 4.4. The difference between 2.3 and 4.4 is the difference between night and day. One of the problem that I began running in to, was many apps that would only work on 4.0+.
