I posted this in one of the GS4 forums but didn't realize a security specific forum existed where it might be more appropriate:
This is information on turning SE for Android to enforcing, adding rules to the policy and showing it cause motochopper to fail:

http://securityblog.org/2013/06/28/se-for-android-gs4-howto-and-exploit-demo
Unfortunately I don't have a GT-9505 (foolishly got an SGH-I337) so I can't try all this out on the GPE version yet.
If anyone happens to try it on GPE let me know what happens

Ooh that's quite interesting. Unfortunately I don't have any devices I can test this with, but I suspect this upcoming generation of devices will include SELinux

NOT AT&T OFFICIAL FIRMWARE
The ROM in question is a 5.0.1 Android build and according to the original source should be good for GT-I9500/9502/9508/9508v versions. The nice folks over at XDA have been playing around with the new software for a few hours now and it appears to be a legitimate official Samsung firmware as opposed to the recent Aurora ports of the leaked Note 3 software.
A few things need to be noted about the Galaxy S4 ROM, though. First of all it has a Chinese region, so even though English is available as a system language, along with two variants of Chinese, some system messages will remain regionalized and so will some functions, like the weather widget.
A stock English keyboard is also missing, but that is easily fixable. Other than that the build seems to be doing well in terms of functionality. NFC, sbeam, GPS, Bluetooth, 3G DATA, Wi-Fi, all sensors for motion and light, hotspot function, Multiwindow all seem to be in working order, as reported by various early adopters.
If you are feeling adventurous and decide to check out the leaked Lollipop software remember to back everything up, as update will almost definitely wipe your internal storage. And if you are a little bit skeptical and wish to wait for the official OTA to start seeding, it shouldn't be long now, as the ROM seems to be just about ready for public consumption.
~~~ FROM THE MODERATOR ~~~ This is not as easy as some may Think...... This isn't as easy as it sounds... for several reasons.
I'm not going to really go into the details but basically if your not a firmware with LOKI support you won't getting to run a 5.0 ROM on the S4 for the time being. Updates to Safestrap, among other things need to be made, and with the changes in Lollipop it remains to be seen if it will work. Not to mention the build is Chinese, would be better of waiting for the official update for the U.S, Canada, or the U.K
We'll see what happens though ~
It appears to be a ROM that you flash through ODIN. Would Safestrap and LOKI even matter at that point?
Even so, flashing it to your device will likely cause issues when trying to go back. If someone is brave enough to take the plunge go ahead and pull up terminal and check the aboot increment. Mind you, this isn't for our model and may brick your device.
We hopefully wait for lollipop for our beloved S4 it's matter of days already so we have to be patient
Its also for the Octacore variant I believe, NOT the i9505 which is similar to our i337 (minis it has unlocked bootloaders). So ATT Variants I HIGHLY suggest not trying to flash this
I337 is non compatible with this rom.. After install you reboot to recovery.. Appears there is now a i337 edition bootloader providing..
As this is not working for this model before someone damages their phone I am closing this thread
Please don't post firmwares as "Official" if they are not meant for the exact model phone
Thanks
I dunno, the sudden stall in releasing lollipop to other regions makes me think this is the new 5.02 update with fixs for the commonly found errors. If not this then it could be 5.1.... have to wait and see. Pity they could be a little more vocal and just tell us what is happening
Given that 4.4 began 23.0 and 5.02 began 23.1 I would think it highly likely that 23.2 was 5.1 based. Either that or they just randomly make up their build numbers instead of using some logic!
I would agree however that Sony's communication (or lack thereof) really sucks.
Currently running Android 6.0.1 on Verizon s7 edge. With September 1st security patch. I want to keep my hotspot with foxify capabilities but I don't know if newest update will prevent that and would like to know if it will or not. Also would like to know if there are any rooting possibilities for this phone with that firmware and security patch available at the moment. I didn't mean to update the September's but I stuck it in my pocket and it must have touched my body and did it by itself. Thankyou for the help.
Greetings and welcome to xda. We can never tell what carriers will add to their firmware, verizon have been known to add things. If you make an account and ask your question in this thread here
Samsung's latest update has slowed my UFS 2.1 device to UFS 2.0 speeds I suggest you don't install the latest 600mb update.
Hopefully someone can clarify this aswell in case it was a faulty install on my device.
Hello,
Is this the same update as on Sammobile ?
https://www.sammobile.com/2017/05/2...te-to-patch-the-galaxy-s8s-connectivity-bugs/
This is NOT true.
I have just tested on the latest update AQEB and UFS 2.1 speeds are maintained.
Dude stop making a bunch of threads with same crap.
Wait, cause I read another thread saying it was true. Then I read one saying it wasn't. Then it was. All these threads must mean this is a serious issue and we should sue.
I can only go on the information that I am experiencing, I have done a factory reset and my speeds seem to have gone back to normal 800ish mb/s maybe it's a buggy install when it was upgraded hopefully other people can clarify.
@vimto25
Please try to keep your discussion in one thread only. Avoid open multiple threads with same question.
How do I do it
I got the same exact one 3 days ago. It's on 8.0.0 now. I have been reading a lot to find answers how to root or install twrp. It looks like there is not a straight forward answer. Just development guides that are not so clear on if there is are for sure way to root or unlock bootloader.
Everything looks to lead me to the same answer. Snapdragon us variants like ours are bootloader blocked so no twrp. Can we use safestrap? What can we do to root and install custom? Even if it's it's a touchwiz. I have an s4 I'm also playing with. I wish my s7 could do what the the s4 does. But samsung us trying to let carriers like Verizon block our bootloaders Hendering our abilities to use the phones like we want. It sucks.
I hope for a method soon myself. I hope that someone can steer us the right way.
You echo my Frustrations. It feels good not to be the only one thinking these things. I think the reason there aren't any straightforward answers is because people are afraid of being sued. Why stop there? It begins with the owner of the phone who wants to root in the first place. They should sue themselves.
it doesn't seem logical to me. If I'm driving and, God forbid, I kill someone with my car do the people that taught me to drive get sued? it isn't an exactly perfect Analogy, but it's enough to start discussion, anywhere but here on this thread. LOL
Another thing is that phones are already very customized in that there are so many of them and they all function so differently even with the same ROM on a different provider Network does different things. it's probably difficult to give you the exact perfect set of instructions for your specific phone. Therefore knowing about Android and Linux and stuff is very helpful for filling in the gaps I will inevitably have. I have no such training and the times I have delved into it I"ve become completely lost.
A rudimentary understanding I do have. So I choose settings with the mindset of increasing the device lifespan, but nothing monumental.
The Qualcomm variants (your phone) are a little more difficult to root and there are several guides online how to do it but you have to make sure the guide says it is to root RK2 firmware on Oreo. RK2 has the December security patch i believe so there may not be a specific guide for that firmware yet but you can try and earlier guide which still works on your device after the December security patch.
This is to root G930V on Nougat from Jan 9 this year, it may work on Oreo too https://www.skyneel.com/root-samsung-galaxy-s7-verizon-sm-g930v-twrp-recovery
You could of course flash G930U firmware too which is unbranded USA and is known to work on Verizon devices. Sammobile XAA and USC. There is a modified version of Odin 13 to flash Verizon phones.
