[Q] should one reboot the phone once in a while? - General Questions and Answers

I'm wondering if rebooting the phone once in a while is good because it clears some memory etc.?
Though I must say I don't do much on my phone besides calling, texting and listening to music...
I have Froyo on my phone.

There's no point rebooting once a while!!..If you're worried about memory just clear the RAM once a while if u get slow!!.

It really doesn't make a difference unless there is something wrong on your phones apps normally a reboot should fix that.

rebooting
funny this is asked because certain devices behave differently when rebooting. with idevices I found that rebooting does fix glitches more than say an android device, because mainly there arent many free mem apps for a jailbroken iDevice, whereas android natively lets you free mem within it's OS. Ive always felt its like flushing a toilet and cant hurt! lol!

You don't have to unless there's a Problem.

Performance Issues

My Captivated is rooted and Im having a lot of performance issues. I unloaded some apps and its still having problems. The biggest issues is delayed response. This happen from messaging, to suing the touchscscrreen./----Im going to leave this typo because it happens of the screen freezing--/ . This happens way to frequently. Please tell me I can fix this myself, I don't want to send this off for a new one. I hate that process.

Backup your apps with TITANIUM BACKUP and flash back to stock. Then I would install the sre.

you can follow all the steps to root your phone and reset and blablabla...
or you can wait for the software fix, which nobody knows when to come or nobody can guarantee to work.
or you can wait for 2.2, which is supposed to be faster but you never know.
or you can exchange for another phone and probably have the same problem.

I wouldn't mind playing the waiting game if just a couple of bugs. But what's a smart phone if it doesn't can't handled being used. I figured it was something I did cause the phone didn't always freeze like this. Is this the lag people are talking about?

Do a reset. However don't use Titanium Backup to restore system data. It will funk stuff up a lot of the time.

I had the same issues, first get rid off any task killer app you have. Second download the One Click Lag Fix app. These steps increased my phones speed drastically. You can also use a program called Autostarts to control which apps load at boot. To do the last to tips, I believe your phone had to be rooted.

Back before this nice app we had to use a script at boot to change the settings this app now does. Y'all got in on Android when it was getting easy to do everything. I had to root by cmd prompt and use a list of commands now we have one click rooters. I am kinda jealous.

You definitely don't need an app killer. Eclair is set up to kill apps when memory is needed. I find things to be buggy when I use an app killer. Use launcher pro. Much smoother than touch whiz. Root with SRE. When all the att crap is gone the phone functions like it should have out of the box even if you disable the OC. Lagfix is optional but doing all these things really makes the phone fly

Random Force Closes and Widgets being deleted

has anyone been having issues after rooting using one click root? I've tried Touch Wiz, ADW and Launcher Pro. My widgets will all of a sudden say not avaible and disapear from the widget list.. also, the phone will randomly restart.

As usual check to make sure what storage the app is installed on. I am having some issue with my Audiogalaxy widget personally. I never told it to do so, but it installed the app on my internal "memory card" as opposed to on the phone. Move it if you have to.
Try restart after that, and if it still isn't working, try removing and reinstalling.
(I'm beginning to suspect some widgets I am used to may be gingerbread only)
Yeah gtasks is deleting itself and also my videos and mp3s randomly stop working.

well he tweeted it. he didnt say in progress, he simply said he was looking through the infuse source code... and then said the infuse would get the voodoo treatment. first sound, then lagfix. dont expect it this week or next. or even next month. it might come that fast but it might not. he got a sgs2 and may be sidetracked with that, also he is heavily involved with new stuff for voodoo sound, maybe we will get squeezed in to this next voodoo sound release, maybe the one after.
is anyone who is having trouble using apps to sd? that is known to cause disapearing widgets. the sgs's have ample storage for apps. i dont know why people insist on moving them to the sd. maybe they have a fast sd card but the phone doesnt need much. embedded os is kinda designed to do minimal i/o.
I had the same issues with widgets deleting. I had to uninstall and reinstall from market to get the going again.
I should have said this first, my issues only started after rooting. But then again I only had the phone for about 10 mins before rooting it.
got rid of it already though as I have an sgs2 on the way.

I had the same problem of Widgets Disappearing, mainly after reboots.
In my case, the culprit was that the applications were automatically installed in the Internal SD (16gb one) of the phone instead of its flash memory... The end result was that when the phone booted up, looked for the widgets /before/ it had finished mounting and scanning the Internal & External SDs, causing the OS to simply removing the Widgets since it could no longer find them.
Try checking on Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> <Problematic App / Widget> (And if available) -> Move to Phone
Reboot and they should stop disappearing.
This totally works. Using go launcher and unrooted Infuse 4G. Both Grooveshark and audible widgets now stay active in the widgets menu.

Kind of curious about why the phone is so slow when downloading anything

Hey brothas I'm kind of still learning about the capabilities of our smartphones as far as performance goes but I am really curious as to why whenever your downloading an app or anything
The phone runs so crappy and becomes very unresponsive and slow...I've never seen this happen on my mytouch 4g or even my g1...but whatever its downloading, it downloads it super fast but I just don't understand this phone has a dual core processor you would think it would be able to download anything and still run smooth...I dunno guys I am just curious if anyone knows why or even has a fix...its like this for me on all roms and kernels..my thought is when your downloading something the CPU focuses all its power on that download therefore everything else is slow..but I dunno like I said I am kind of a noob and always looking to learn...appreciate some input..thanks brothas

I was actually wondering about this myself. I get that slowdown too, and especially as it's installing the app or whatever it is I've downloaded.
Doesn't bother me TOO much, I just kind of chill out, while it installs... But a curiosity none-the-less.
Haven't noticed any slowdown while dl'ing. Just dl'ed a 3meg kernel in like 5 seconds.

I can confirm this. I think the main issue is, is that we are using software that was never intended for a dual core processor so the end result is random reboots, lag when downloading apps, etc. Even the Sensation which has a dual core processor has its share of software glitches/issues. Let's hope that when Ice Cream Sandwich (Google's next update with dual core processor support) comes out that we'll either automatically get the update from LG/T-Mobile or LG/Nvidia will release the necessary drivers and/or files to the XDA community.

Sorry for the misunderstanding the phone is fine when downloading, but whenever its doing an install for whatever reason it gets unresponsive or extremely laggy for a short second. Try downloading something from the market and then when it starts to install browse the web and see what it does. This is definitely not a major or a minor issue for me since it does this for only a quick second.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
Ok, so if you go to market and then go to myapps...and there's like 12 things that need to be updated...and you start clicking one by one, update, ok, update, ok, etc...you never feel any hiccup of lag when it's at the install phase of any of those?
I feel this all of the time. Especially when I use CM's market apps installer that defaults after installing a new nightly...when I have almost all of them checkmarked, then it takes me to the market page for each one of them individually. And it has nothing at all to do with internet connection or speed, because it's the same whether I'm using my 6MBps 4g, or my 36MBps wifi at home. Sometimes, the hiccup will even make me click the wrong button by accident.
my pc,6 core amd, 6 gigs ram, sometimes becomes sluggish while installing graphic card drivers etc. i wouldn't put too much thought into it. it usually takes about 5 seconds to install an app.

Yeah, I agree this isn't much of a big deal at least to me. I can live with it. I was just agreeing with the OP since I also noticed the short bit of lag.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
Its not the download that causes the phone to be slow. When you're installing an app, the processor is being used and it will slow down the phone, especially when you're updating/installing multiple apps. My g1, droid, captivate, and g2x have done this. My ipod touch did it too.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
I find that this only happens when installing an app from the google market. When installing apk's from any other source it seems to be fine.
Also as a note, after updating to the new google app i have noticed that it doesnt slow down anymore. It might be me, but i think its just the old market app.
I got this slow down on every Android phone I've owned except my Sensation. Maybe Gingerbread fixed it?

Your welcome and check out the link below. Even Qualcomm, the company who has designed processor chips for phones such as the myTouch 4g, HTC Sensation, Evo 3d etc. also agrees with my statement about the software not being supported for dual core processors. That's why some of you may have noticed that your previous 1ghz single core phone was either just as fast as these dual core phones or even faster in day to day use. For instance my myTouch 4g (when rooted with Faux Aosp build clocked at stock 1ghz) and Stock Nexus felt just as fast as the G2x when opening and closing apps and even scrolling through the browser (the myTouch 4g scrolled through the browser just as smooth as the G2x, but the Nexus S did not).

Your battery life and speed can dramatically increase, I'm still a beginner to rooting and all this good stuff so that's the most significant change I saw as of now.
It can be costly when you dont know what your doing but if you.do it right it can save you money(from mobile hotspot) and increase speed

Well one way is changing nunbers my girl got her g2x couple days after me.. And her hotspot didnt work eirher after changing phones. We had problems with her data that she would browse the internet, then out of nowhere sge gets redirected to web2go.com sating she has no data, and 1.99 charge to continue. We had this issue for 2wks, they didbt know what to do, had 4 replacement phones because thats all they suggested, 2 new sim cards, refreshed the network to many times, factory reset.. I told them it has to be the network because even if she swapped phones with me or tried another problem would follow, i suggested to change number, rep said no, supervisor said that wouldn't help. So he ordered another replacement, monday it came, same thing. Called again, this time demanded her number changed, few minutes later internet worked from there on. Even her hotspot well, working because network hasnt detected the new number.. But hers is working for now..

Yea. That was the only thing she let me do and I froze some apps to save her some battery life, also got rid of the fora files for some extra space.. She's tough, she doesn't like change... took me forever to get her to upgrade her PC... The only reason she has the sgs4g is it was a gift... She sees the customizations on my phone and says " why don't I have that ? " and I say. " Let me flash your phone and you will" and shes silent .... So there's a glimpse of hope... maybe the size of a dust particle but its there ...lol..

Well that's what I think anyway... I love music and at night I'll put my headphones on to fall asleep and on the stock roms it seems idk kinda muffled, its not as crisp .. I use the earbuds that came with the wife's sgs4g... Bass Is awesome on them .. I crank up some Foo Fighters and I'm in my happy place.. I'm pretty picky about my music quality ... Musics in my genes, both sides of my family are full of musicians .... I'm the only one who can't read sheet music... I'm self taught bass player .. also play a little drums... Idk I can just listen and then play it... My brotherrthe same way but he can read sheet music...

Sorry to pester, but what ROM/ kernel fixed the "kinda muffled"? Did you use those earbuds on both stock and whatever your are using now? I used to be an audiophile - not that I expect that quality out of the cheap DACs they use in these phones, but free improvement is free, and I like free....

Nexus S 4g problems

The problem is with my wife's phone.. In the last two months or so her phone has been having trouble with random restarts and apps force closing, Triple Town for example.. She feels like her phone has a virus, should I download an AV app and try?
Her phone is completely stock, running 2.3.7.. I am not super tech savy by any means. I know how to flash roms (with a bit of research of course) and whatnot but her phone is her life. She's so close to throwing her phone out of the window on the freeway.
I am completely baffled.. And could really use some help from the XDA community. Thank you in advance, if any more information about her phone is needed feel free to ask.
