TF-101 USB interface broken - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My TF-101 external interface is messed up. When I plug into my keyboard, the keyboard works, but USB and SD cards aren't recognized. When I try and connect directly to my PC (Linux or Windows) my transformer is not recognized. I tried to boot into apx mode, and my transformer will not do it.
I've tried switching MTP on and off, usb debug on and off--nothing.
I opened my transformer and switched out the physical interface port with my other working transformer, and it made no difference (i.e. it is not the physical transformer port).
any ideas or suggestions?

What ROM/firmware are you running?
Judging from your tests, it tells me there's 2 possibilities:
1. Software is creating the problem
2. The issue is deeper than the USB interface, could be the controller on the board or a number of other hardware issues.
Can you still boot in recovery? If so and if you're rooted, do a nandroid backup just in case. Also do a full backup of your data and copy over wifi using samba or airadb or ftp or etc. Then do a complete flash using easyflasher, get it back to stock. Check if the problem persists. If yes, then I'd assume it's something hardware. You could compare voltage at different test spots on the board.
Edit: I assume APX/transfers work while not docked?

The USB and SD cards are on a different circuit from POWER from the dock, as well as the physical KEYBOARD. I am pretty sure the touchpad is also on the USB/SD circuit, so I would bet that is not working.
Most likely this is an issue with that circuit/board on the dock.
As far as PC detection, I would try getting a new cable. I (and other) have had an issue where our tablets were NOT recognized by multiple PC's, but using the same cord did work to power the device to charge it from the Asus wall wart. My cable has been badly abused by about 12 trips around the world in the last 2 years.

Thanks but it's not the cable given that I have a second transformer working fine on it. I'm on a stock non-rooted build on this one. (The other working transformer is stock, rooted).
Perplexing. Keyboard works with other transformer, as well.

Just to lay out the symptoms: No connectivity with computer (Linux or WIndows) over USB when transformer is booted normally. Transformer does not come up in APX mode. I'm plugging directly into tablet with a known good cable. No hardware problem with connector (pins are good).
Running pure stock US 9.2.1.27 (ICS 4.0.3)
Can boot recovery, but have no good update to use. Anyone with a tutorial on how to "update" a downgrade to honeycomb using stock recovery and a microsd, I'm listening.
thanks,

You will need to use Wolf's Downgrade method to install an older recovery from the HC firmware you want to flash.
Since your computers don't recognize it, you cannot downgrade as you need ADB via USB working.
How do you know it is a good cable? My original cable works to charge just fine, but one or both of the data wires (pins 2&3) are not working so it is basically just a charging cable.
Got a new cable and computers can detect it.

It's a good cable because I have a second TF-101 that works fine with that cable and my spare good cable...I wish it were a bad cable, that would be the easy fix...

TF won't connect to PC via USB anymore

Hey folks,
I've been having a hell of a time getting my tf to connect to the pc via usb these last few days. No matter what I do it will not connect to any pc.
Drivers are installed fine and worked great in the past. The usb cable works fine with the charger and devices charges fine.
If I plug the USB into the pc and then into the TF the screen turns on, so it knows its there but refuses to allow communication between pc and tf on any computer I try.
In device settings USB tethering is greyed out and no matter what I try I cannot get it to allow me to turn it on. Shutdown, held button to reset, restarted pc's, notta.
I recently used NVFLASH to unroot my TF for an RMA that I never got around to doing. Now I want to root again but without the USB working I can't.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
No one else is experiencing this? Is my cord mucked? If so why does it still work for charging? Eeeeek! I'm freaking out here.

Is usb debugging turned on in the tf settings->application->development?
I have no idea what you're talking about with usb tethering in the settings...
Is the device being recognized by your pc? What operating system?
USB Tethering is greyed out on all TF's. If for sharing data service with another device and you dont have data service on the TF unless you have a dongle.
Have you tried putting into APX and checking. You don't boot the rom when using nvflash. Power / Vol + when booting
Yes, if you think about it Tethering is when you wish to pass your 3G connection be that either through SIM card or Dongle to another device.
If you don't have either a SIM Card with Data services (which you won't have) or a Dongle then it is only correct the Tethering option will remain greyed out.
Hey and thanks folks.
Neither of my PC's will detect my TF but both did just a few weeks ago.
Asus sync won't work either. In accounts/sync Asus sync is off and there is no way to turn it on. Don't know if this is normal or not.
I have USB debugging on but still it won't get detected. Restarted everything multiple times too.
I cannot enter apx mode however I had no trouble doing so before.
Like I said above i can still charge with my cord just no PC connectivity so I don't understand what's up.
As for USB tethering, when USB is plugged in it should allow me to select it (even though I don't want to) thus why I think the problem is related to the pad or cord not the PCs.
Thoughts?

This is not only annoying but it gets more and more confusing. I can connect my other Android devices to a PC and move files between the devices. I should be able to do the same with the Transformer and a PC.

Try new cable, the charging uses other pins/wires in the cable
Already ordered from ncix. Hopefully that's it or I'm out $45 with shipping.

Usb tethering is for sharing the data service on your TF. If you dont have 3g/4g service on your TF then it will not be available. Do you have a conflict listed in your device manager? I have had to reinstall the Asus suite twice at this point and manually remove the drivers from device manager

[Q] Help Rooting TF101 First Time

Well...my wife's transformer is incredibly slow and she is giving me permission finally to root it. However I have had difficulty doing so because the charging/interface port on the tablet has issues. A while ago the port stopped charging the tablet. We have multiple chargers for that tablet and nothing will charge it via that port. The only way she can charge it is by plugging it into the keyboard dock and charging the dock. Therefore when I try to plug the tablet into the computer so that I can forego the root process the computer will not recognize it.
So my question is.....can this tablet be rooted by downloading files to it and not need a tablet to PC interface? Or, can the tablet be plugged into the dock and interface with the PC somehow? I looked through all the rooting methods I could find and all of them required a tablet to PC interface.
Unfortunately you need a computer USB connection to root it. There was only 1 firmware (8.6.5.19) that could be rooted without a PC. In order to downgrade, you need a computer as well.
I have been able to root mine using the dock charging port. I just booted to APX mode (VOL UP and POWER).
I wrote a guide on how to root here: http://www.transformerforums.com/fo...t/31927-frederuco-s-guide-root-rom-tf101.html
If the dock is charging the tablet surely the issue must be with charger/cable ive had issues with tf101 cable before, mine would slow charge at rate that was bearly noticable, and the tablet didn't show a charging icon, but the cable did allow a data connection still. If infact it is your tf101 thats the issue root will be out of the question but i belive the stock kernel can be overclocked with an overclocking app which might help a bit.

One would think cause that is the most logical explanation. However, I have tried 3 cables (one the original and other 2 brand new ones) and 2 different OEM power supplies and one that I made which has the proper output ratings and none will charge the tablet. However, all of them will charge the dock. The only way to get the tablet to charge is by plugging into the dock. I know it uses the same port and I am clueless as to why one charges and the other doesn't on the same port. All I know is that is what is going on.
The only problem I ever had with flashing while docked was flashing Ubuntu. But I always flash while docked, so that shouldn't be an issue.
I just flashed back to stock, then re-rooted (wanted a TWRP backup of rooted stock) using the OEM cable via the dock charging port.
No issues here.

[Q] No USB connectivity to PCs - Unusual

Hello. I have a TF101 B60 model. It fails booting to recovery. I can not get it to talk to my WIN7, Mint15, WINXP PCs via USB. It does not get recognized by any. I replaced the USB connector, but that did not help. However; I purchased an ASUS USB adapter that plugs into the tablet and has a full size USB port. I can connect a USB thumb drive, serial port adapter and lan adapter to this USB adapter and the tablet will recognize all of them and work flawlessly. This is the part that confuses me. I have three cables. The original and two I got from ebay. None of these cable work connecting to a PC with Linux or WINDOWS. I can not boot into APX mode. I have spent hours looking a posts and most are fixed by replacing the cable. I have to believe the USB part works because of the adapter works with USB devices.
Any ideas on fixing this or on how to flash a new ROM. I am at .27 now. I can't root or flash withour USB?! I have not seen this as successful even using adb. You still need a rooted tablet. Any help would be greatly apreciated.

Unfortunately, if you cannot connect using the USB charging cable you will not be able to root. Many of us have tried to find a way to root using the tablet itself. It is not possible.
The USB host adapter may be using different pins than the actual USB charging cable so there could be a bad pin in the tablet connector that is causing an issue with the USB SLAVE when connecting to a PC. Not sure the best way to diagnose this other than try your cable with another Transformer (could be TF201, 300, 700 or 701) to see if it is recognized by your PC and cable.

USB 3.0 Problem

Hi!
Got my Note yesterday, now I got a problem, again. I can't get it work on USB 3.0 no matter what I do (I'm sure about this but I ask this anyway: am I right that SM-P905 have USB 3.0?)
Okay, to the problem:
When connected to USB 3.0 I don't have option to choose USB 3, I only got MTP and PTP
- I updated Kies 3
- I reinstalled drivers (from Kies)
- I have 2 USB 3.0 ports on my PC so not so many to test but:
USB 3.0 works on my Note 3 (SM-N9005) on both USB-ports, It also works well with my Note Pro USB-cable
Note Pro doesn't work (don't give even option to choose USB 3 mode) on any of these two ports. I also tried both ports using my Note 3 USB-cable, but still no luck
So any ideas?
ps. I got ASUS motherboard and I found out someones having similar problems with their Android devices. Reason was ASUS Ai Charger -utility, but I don't have that one never ever istalled on my PC. Oooh, and one more thing, I'm using Win 7 Home Premium (x64)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Updating BIOS and reinstalling Windows did the trick, now it works like it should
What exactly makes you say it doesn't work? Are you completely unable to transfer data to/from the tablet to a PC, are you not seeing a difference between transfer speeds using a USB 2.0 cable vs a 3.0 cable, OR is the appearance of everything working there but you are wanting the USB 3.0 nag screen to pop up to give you an indication that you're indeed using USB 3.0 ?

When I connect Note to PC USB 3.0 port, pull down notification bar and click USB notification, I get ONLY option to use MTP or PTP. USB 3.0 is not listed there as option. I also transferred about <10Gb size file to Note and it took about 50min, which really is loooooong time..
Okay, here is screenshot about what I meant. Can you please say how it's in your tablet.

Same - Mine connects MTP and I can see it and transfer files but on my tablet I get a Icon in the top tray that says connected to USB 3.0
Same here, when I'm getting a USB 3.0 connection to my PC I'll get the 3.0 indication in the notification screen.
I can't get 3.0 to work with my rMBP but it works with my Windows 7 based workstation and I can definitely see an increase in file transfer speed to the tablet when the USB 3.0 cable is used in a USB 3.0 port. Just did a test from a hard drive on my PC to the tablet, 2.1GB file transferred to internal memory on the Note Pro in 1:18 using a USB 2.0 cable and 0:48 using the stock USB 3.0 cable so I'm getting about 45mb/s with 3.0 and 27mb/s with 2.0.
Okay thanks. Tomorrow I'll check again if notification bar shows USB 3 or not, can't remember right now (still got thought that not). I'll get back here and tell if it's working or not.
EDIT: Yup, no USB 3.0 connection, in notifiction area there is that standard USB icon and it's not saying 3.0
EDIT2: Is there some way to find out if Note charges using USB 3.0? Shouldn't the 3.0 be a lot faster on recharging than 2.0, but how I can know which one it uses?

Okay, back to subject..
Does USB 3.0 affect anyway to charging speed? Like if I use stock wall charger with 2.0 or 3.0 cable?
What's your charging speed? I did test and from 50% to 55% it took 15 minutes and from 50% to 65% 45 minutes (which makes average 5%/15min)
To charge I used stock wall charger and stock USB 3.0 cable. I didn't use my NP while charging and mobile data / wifi was OFF
Can you please check how fast is your Note Pro to charge? I still can't make my note to work on 3.0 mode when connected to my PC and I'm trying to find is the problem on my PC or Note before sending this to repair
How about trying Gsam Battery Monitor and observing the charging characteristics that way. It will give you charging current.

With wall charher charging current is 1900mAh, which is normal I think.
Now, if I plug my NP to my computers USB 3.0 port, I get BSOD --> PC reboots and I plug again --> now it works, but still not on USB 3.0 mode. So it could be with drivers or something, tried again install device drivers with Kies 3 but no luck. What could I do? I don't have skills to remove all the drivers and start from clean table (any other way than formatting my pc and that's not gonna happer for a while )
Any ideas?
Okay, just tried with laptop (Win 8.1) and my NP is ok, it connected using USB 3.0.
Now what, if my external HDD and Note 3 works on my own PC via 3.0, what I can do to make my Note Pro work also??
Problem have to be with drivers or something..
Mine doesn't show the "Use USB3.0" option that my Note 3 shows, but it clearly says "Connected as a media device via USB3.0" in the notification bar. (See attached screnshot)
Also, it just copied 1.03GB in 16 seconds from my laptop to my NotePro.
Clearly they removed the USB 3.0 setting from the menu, and it is now done automatically.

I'd start with USBDEVIEW. Google it. Run that with no android devices connected to the PC. Uninstall all drivers related to any android device and reboot the computer. Then try again.
If that doesn't work, consider repeating that, rebooting and then updating the chipset drivers for your motherboard.
After that, I'm out of ideas.
Us Mac users have the same issue; the tablet is simply not recognized as a USB 3.0 device on my rMBP which is running Mavericks. It doesn't matter if I'm running windows as a virtual machine in VMWare Fusion or not so I'm thinking its at the driver level of Mavericks.

I also tried killing all processes that I knew I can safely kill from my PC (In hope if some program/process is doing harm for USB 3.0 connection) but no luck..

I updated them twice, just to be sure. I got 2x USB 3.0 ports on my PC.
My external HD and Note 3 works well with both of them. And Note 3 also works with NP 12.2 cable.
Just my NP wont work no matter which port or cable I use.
On my friends laptop NP 12.2 with the cable that came in the box works well, immediately connects as 3.0 device.
I think I'll quit with this. Don't have the knowledge find out where the problem is.. I thought maby BIOS update might help, but since everything else works fine, I wont do that because the risk of totally f*** up my computer.
But if anyone here got any other/more ideas, I'm listening

You said you had an ASUS motherboard, right? I'd go ahead and update the BIOS, it's pretty fool proof with the newer ones (which you have USB3.0, so it's a safe assumption that it's new enough.)
I also have an Asus motherboard, funny thing is, my Note Pro does show the USB3.0 indicator in the notification bar, but I'm copying files over right now via Linux and it's copying at 9.9MB/s. That's pretty horrible. Added to that, my Note Pro won't charge from the USB port on my computer, but it will from the wall charger. It has a big red X over the battery when plugged into the PC. So I'm not sure if that's somehow related.
Another thought about both of our problems, is that maybe the cable is a little loose or something is in the port-hole. I know mine was a bit flakey for a bit there (as in I would plug it in, create a folder... then tried to rename it and it said it couldn't access the device... I had to try it three times after unplugging and plugging it back in.)
It doesn't make sense though that it's a BIOS and/or driver issue if you also have a Note 3 and it's working through USB3. I know on mine, when I tried it in Linux (can't recall if I did under Windows), it was extremely flakey there too. The Note Pro just autodetected it, but still copied slowly. I'll have to try that under Windows as well now.

Yes, you may want to update your BIOS.
(For the record, I'm using an Asus N76VB with the factory BIOS, no issue).
Hm, maybe a silly suggestion... Are you using any type of USB charging setting? I know some of these Asus motherboards come with an option to overvolt the USB port to enable fast charging.

Not related. A USBport doesn't supply enough amperé to register as charging. Even my old Galaxy Tab 2 10,1 has that issue.

I have that issue with my Note 3 and even my TF700T since day 1. It's an MTP bug. And now since 4.4.2 I can't rename anything on my Note 3 without explorer.exe crashing. Different pc's, different OS's, different cables, no difference.

I did read somewhere that Asus AI Suite (program to tune up voltage or something for usb charging) can somehow do "harm" to USB3 connection, but I don't have that one even installed.

Yeah, I know mine isn't charging because I watched, even after plugging it into my computer, it slowly go from 70% battery down to 65%.
When looking at what is hogging all the battery, it's the retarded Indexing service. I'm still in the process of seeing if there's a fix for that, but it really seems like it's having an issue (which would also explain why mounting it on the computer is flakey, since they could be trying to read the same file systems.) Oddly, my Note 3 doesn't have any of these issues (except actually mounting as USB3). In fact, I was starting to suspect my PC at work had crap USB ports, but it's just the stupid Blackberry cable (it only successfully charges the blackberry, not my Note 3 or anything besides my mouse that I've plugged into it.)

[Q] Working USB OTG cable?

I've now purchased THREE USB OTG straight cables (not Y) that did not work with my Shield Tablet... Is there some sort of trick i don't know about? Some special kind of OTG cable i need to buy? Some setting i need to enable for it to work?
I've tested the cables both with usb keyboard, mouse and various properly formatted USB drives - none detected at all. They dont work either with my Nexus 4 phone or Nexus 7 2012 tablet (but i suspect those models dont even support USB OTG, so doesnt say much).
Can anyone point me to a straight USB OTG cable that actually works with the tablet?
Are you running the latest OTA , Android 5.1? The OTG is broken in this version. Try plugging in the cable while tablet powered off the booting up. You won't be able to charge tablet until reboot though.
