I've always ran my phone (P500h) on the official CM7.2 ever since my telco pushed out an update that breaks the A-GPS and has a missing dictionary when using the LG Keyboard (I think it's v20d - Telecom NZ).
Recently I had needed to use the phone as a wifi hotspot, and I found the performance miserable. When surfing on a device connected to the phone, the internet speeds is very slow and when loading web pages it frequently timed out. It's not my 3G connection, because when surfing the same pages on the phone directly, it worked fine and the pages load up at a decent speed. A quick search on these forums here suggested that it may be due to the poor quality wifi chip used in these phones, something about it dropping data packets when connected to certain wifi devices. It certain sounded plausible so I assumed it's a hardware fault and that there's nothing I can do about it...
Shortly after that I decided to "refresh" the device by flashing it to the stock ROM provided by my telco. In a quick search I've found a new update (well, new-to-me update) released in April 2012, v20e for Telecom NZ. Flashed that, and I was very pleasantly surprised that the performance of the phone is noticeably improved over the official CM7.2 in boot-up time and general usage, and that wifi hotspot no longer sucked! (A-GPS and dictionary issue with LG Keyboard in v20d were also fixed.)
Now I'm beginning to suspect that the poor wifi performance previously noticed is due to CM7.2. Is there any CM7.2 P500(h) users out there having the same poor performance with the wifi hotspot feature?

I have been having some really annoying issues with the 3G capabilities of the Touch Cruise. I actually think it is something AT&T is doing on the network, but can't be sure. Anyone experience anything like this? Here are the symptoms:
1. The TC worked great on the 3G network when I first received it. Averaged around 700k speeds.
2. I flew across the state and the phone was unable to make or receive calls. I noticed the 3G/H symbol just fine, but no voice, no data. On a whim, I turned off the 3G and went back to Edge and everything worked fine, slower - but fine. I noticed this behavior on several subsequent trips. Coverage maps show 3G capability.
3. I've been to numerous other cities and experience varying 3G speeds, but the phone definitely works.
4. Lately I've noticed the phone almost seems to experience 3G "fatigue" by the end of the work day. In my home area where it seems to work fine, I'll look at my phone and it will either have no service, or it will not be working on 3G (no calls or e-mail). By later in the evening, it appears to be back to normal.
5. A reset will normally bring things back at least temporarily.
6. I have been trying out new ROM's and Radios posted here, but don't think they are the source of the issues. I've upgraded and downgraded with the same results.
Is this the AT&T network? Could it be with the proliferation of 3G devices, the network becomes saturated particularly by the end of the day?
More importantly, if 3G is for some reason unavailable the phone should degrade gracefully enough to allow it to continue to operate on the Edge network without any interaction by the end user.
Anybody else experiencing this behavior? Any tips? Any resolutions?
Re:
You could try to fix the GSM and 3g bands in the phone settings from automatic to your specific band. Normally that reduces ur battery usage and provides better network clarity. It might just help.
Secondly you could try the SEA 6.1 official rom as that seems to be one of the best ones so far.
I had plenty of 3G / Edge issues when i first received my TC. I spent many hours with AT&T tech support as well as a few conferrence calls with AT&T and HTC. No one was able to come up with a viable solution. Being a geek at heart I spent many hours testing roms and radios. Only a few combinations work with the AT&T edge network. My ROM is based on 18129.0.4.5 with a murata radio 1.58.21.23(must be certified murata) and has worked for me with no problems.
Hope this helps
Hi All
I changed from a SE p1i to a HTC Touch Pro. In terms of phone easiness and functionalities I lost a lot but in terms of HW I though I gained a lot. However I started to realise that although it has HSDPA and HSUPA the internet over 3G was very, very slow. I sent it to repair and come exactly the same. The best speed I can get is 61Kbps DL when 3G provides 384Kbps and HSDPA 7.2Mbps. Since the latency is very very high, I cannot get the complete rendering of a complex page if the http server gives time-out too early. Using the PC with the VPN is a nightmare.
A friend of mine that is a radio engineer in Nokia told me that this is a "well know problem of Windows Mobile that cannot cipher/decipher the 3G radio packets in real time". I searched on the internet and couldn't find nothing however I tried several HTC and Samsung phones with Windows Mobile, on several operators and countries and all are very very slow. And comparing them with the SE pi1 that worked like a clock... until it broke :-D

I think you will find you are getting 61 kiloBYTES per second which equates to 488 Kbps, I use it with VPN and it's great, how are you connecting your PC to your phone, hopefully not via internet connection sharing or it will fail the VPN security check and boot you off quickly
Hi Everyone,
I too was noticing speed issues and they are for sure there. People on these boards have been seeing upto 2Mbit downloads speeds so it can be done. As my sig shows I got 1.7Mbit with 1-2 "H" bars.
I loaded a new radio on mine and that seemed to almost double my bandwidth, I was using the standard .32 radio and was getting around 600 to 700Kbit and then switched to the .28 radio and was getting 1100 to 1300Kbit. Only do your speed tests by tether unless you feel you have a good mobile website to do your testing. I was using www.dslreports.com/mspeed but the results are junk, theirs servers are not able to supply enough bandwidth for a good test.
Secondly I installed a new ROM, specifically I am using NATF's 2.3. This will make the phone way faster in terms of performance. It also allows me to tether via the USB and use my VPN without any problems.
I have an AT&T data card for my laptop (it's a work thing) and I get equal coverage/speed on the fuze as I do on this dedicated device, that is without the radio change that is.
Give the above items a try, the information for making the changes can be found in the ROM development area
Thanks All
Thanks for the feedback guys.
I used GoToMyHelp.com to make the test and provide me the results in both Kbps and KBps... 7.6KBps they said... GPRS speed.
With 3G only the results vary from 17Kbps to 60Kbps, when I turn HSDPA on I always get 61Kbps... looks like the phone cannot handle more than one major WCDMA code with the most robust and slowest modulation code...
But if people reported higher speeds then it means I really have an HW problem and so I have to insist with the service centre... I guess...
Henrique
But...
Although from the comments received looks like the problem is more acute on my device I tried a Samsung with Windos Mobile 6.1 and it is as slow as mine... I think it is too much coincidence.
Does anyone has any information regarding the so called "well known limitation of the cipher/deciphering in real time of windows mobile?
Thanks for any feedback...
Henrique
i get from 800kpb - 1000
never tested upload.
is tehre another test?
I only trust speedtest.net through a hardline tether (not bt) for speed test results. This moves as much processing power as possible from the phone to a full fledged computer, reducing such variables as screen drawing speed, free memory, cpu utilization, etc.
I find the fuze to perform almost exactly in line with my 881u (best speed ive seen on that is just over 2400 down, 900 up) - the only discernable difference is latency, slightly better on 881u (which is to be expected as there isnt ICS running as a proxy in such a situation)
As to the fastest speed you'll see on the device itself, I have not been able to clock over 1700 on speedtest.net running in flash lite 3.1 in opera mobile on my wifi, where i score 5500+ on the computer, so i think testing via phone's browser is not a very good measurement.
I don't know, I just switched my Settings > Phone > Band to GSM to see if it saves substantial battery, opposed to the 3G and even further "H" icon HSxPA I was using before.
The "E" icon GSM-Edge doesn't seem to slow down my Google Maps updates very much.
Thanks
Thank you all for sharing your experience.
The tests I made were using the phone as a modem via USB, so the processing on the phone was at a minimum.
The site I indicated before, GoToMyHelp.com, is used by a Firefox extension I have. After trying several sites this was the one that always gave me the best perceptible match between the browsing experience and the measured figures...
Now comes the hard part to convince the customer services that the phone has problems...

I think I have the same problem. I am getting crazy low speeds on G and H, 30Kbit/sec and 60 Kbit/sec respectively. I have tried various tweaks found on the forums, I've flashed a couple of cooked roms and various radios but can't get it any higher. I've tried the SIM in the wifes iphone so I am sure that it's not a problem with that.
Let us know how you get on, are you going to call HTC direct or go through the company you bought it from?

im getting 820kb/s in a suburaban area. It works great. Did you enable HSPDA. AT&T turns HSPDA by default (probobly to save bandwidth). All you have to do is fix it...im not sure how search the forum. I am using DA_G Clean fuze rom and it has it built into the ROM
OMG i just tethered my PC and I got some crazy speeds
And that was the lowest one. It went all the way up to 1900..obviously it flutuates a lot but it is still leveling off around 15k....which is crazy because I only have TWO bars!
this is my home
Its crazy that my phone gets speeds half as fast as my DSL and it only has two bars and im in the suburbs!
i tried iphonespeedtest.com on 1.07 proven and got about 400 at highest
tried it when i used his 1.08 i got 1200 kbps
its sick

Is it possible that while tethered the phone is capable of more data throughput that isn't possible while browsing on the phone? Similar to the problem of encrypted WiFi being slow due to the processor load of encrypting and decrypting data.
From a technical standpoint when you're tethered all the phone does is pass data from the 3G connection to the USB port. The only processing needed is basic lower level networking to re-address the data packets to a new port, thus the processor has a low load and can dedicate more cycles to simply moving data. The phone can focus all of it's power on getting the fastest connection with the 3G tower.
But when you browse on the phone the processor needs to terminate the data packet and unload it into a program. On top of that even more processor power goes towards running the program itself that is using the data. Since the processor is busy multitasking by running a program, terminating data packets, and trying to maintain a connection with the 3G tower, it's more likely to drop packets or lose it's connection.
This would also explain why you lose that weak 3G connection and drop to EDGE when you open a program that has high processor demands.
Anyone found their Chacha disables it's WiFi on it's own? Mine has done it twice to my knowledge. The first time I assumed it was down to the power saving kicking in, but today, the battery had 60+% remaining and it cut off after about 10 hours.
I've had numerous Android handsets, from 1.5 thru to 2.2 and none of them disabled WiFi. The router is in the room directly below where the phone is, so signal strength is not an issue. The BB9700 that was also in the room at the same time still has it's connection.
On a different note, disabling FB chat and having a good signal (via Femtocell) seems to have improved battery performance. Still have 50% battery after 12 hours and about 30mins of calls and FB/twitter, with WiFi on for 10 hours and tracesaver app, which uses GPS and uploads data on phone usage.
Will do a firmware upgrade, as I'm on 1.15 right now, but there are more bugs in this phone than I've seen on any other Android handset. Like the form factor, but the honeymoon period is coming to an end. Moto FIRE could be a suitable replacement, but I've not had a good history with Moto.
When you say disabling wifi, do you mean wifi turns off? Or you get disconnected from your router?
I have had issues where I will get disconnected from a router before.
Software version 1.15 is waay old, try updating to 1.57 here

You may need a goldcard (modified sdcard) to run this update, there's an easy tutorial how to make a goldcard here: theunlockr.com/2010/03/10/how-to-create-a-goldcard/
Hope that helps
Mine turns itself on by itself I am pretty sure its an app doing it but not found which yet

Hi all!
I previously owned a Galaxy Nexus that I will use as a reference for my N5. The GN had a quite bad sensitivity to mobile networks, I've compared my RSSI with friends on the same network and RF band, I always had 5-10 dB worse than the others. WiFi was OK but worse than my Nexus 7 (2012) for example.
Now I received my N5 yesterday and I must say it's a let down. The wifi performance is HORRIBLE. Worse than GN!
Yesterday I had my 802.11n router configured to 40MHz channel 5, the N5 was connected at 5Mbit/s even in front of the router. The MacBook, Nexus 7, Galaxy Nexus (as well as my wife's gear: laptop, phone, tablet) were all connected at more than that, at least 54Mbit/s
I switched 802.11n to 20MHz, it was better! I had ~60Mbit WiFi and a speedtest yielded 15Mbit/s (my DSL line is ~17Mbit).
But the signal strength is always really weak. My room is just one small wall separated from the router, and this is the second best room for WiFi after the router room. I used to always have really good signal strength, more than 60Mbit/s with my GN. The N5 oscillated from 20 to 5Mbit/s
Now this morning at work the wifi signal is not really good, the GN reports 54Mbit/s "Good" signal strength, while the N5 only reports 54Mbit/s "Weak" signal strength. And it's flaky, it goes on and off and it's not stable.
The GN yields a speed test of 3.6Mbit/s (downlink) and 6.3Mbit/s (uplink); the N5 couldn't even finish the speed test, the wifi connection drops. Before it dropped it was at 600kbit/s.
So I don't think this is normal. I didn't do anything but unlock the bootloader. I havent flashed anything yet.
Am I the only one? What can I do? Google is not really good for customer service...
May be a bum unit. I have the N5 next to my N4, and the N5 generally shows "more bars" and seems to get calls out where the N4 doesn't. No dropped calls yet.
I am using Straight Talk AT&T.
I use the Network Signal Info widget, and just comparing with the N4, it seems to fare a bit better in terms of -dBm and ASU.
Signal on mine is excellent, as good if not better than my last 2 phones (GS3 and HOX+).
I sent a message to the google support team related to my purchase. I think I got a defective unit and I need a replacement.
24 hours an no sign of life from google yet....
I wrote my message in english because the UI was in english, I hope that the people that will get my message can read English (I'm French)!!!
Thanks for your input guys. This helped me consider this an issue and file a compain to google.
PS: also, I have unlocked the bootloader and rooted the thing, do I need to remove everything and lock the bootloader again before I send it to google? (if they're replacing it of course)
OK the support replied, they basically said
1. Read the online Google help -- OK yeah sure
2. Check with your ISP for your router settings -- Yeah why the GN, N7, laptops and everything work properly?
3. Do a factory reset -- I had this issue even before I could login to my google account, the first 140MB update took 40mn to download...
Anyway I did do a factory reset from the images google provide on the developer website. I didn't check the online help or my ISP because this is clearly not the issue.
Still the same, it's not working. I've got zero wifi bars and I get disconnected while the GN on the same location gets "Excellent" wifi signal and speed.
update nov 10th: they replied again, I have to ship it back and get a new one (all for free)
that's great except that it's shipping on dec. 11th!!! I'll have to continue to use a no wifi smartphone for a full month!
update nov 12th: yay, it shipped! I'll get the new unit on nov 14th!
update nov 15th: working like a charm. Sent the other one back. Super happy!
So, to start... My phone is 100% stock, no aftermarket anything or custom anything. After the most recent update to the OS a week or so ago, I'm noticing weird stuff, see below. Anyone have any suggestions? No changes were made to the phone, no weird apps installed, etc.
- Battery drains significantly faster. At 85% it's saying I have 12 hours of battery life.
- Wifi drops outside, despite being only 15 feet from my router. This never happened before.
- Phone will not consistently connect to my Sprint Airave (mini cell tower, Google it). Generally will have one bar of LTE rather than full bars of 3G while on wifi.
Backup everything and reset the phone. Start from scratch. Latest CRC builds are better than 1st CRAP build.
Feedback later.
Good luck
Haven't done the reset yet, but I think the issue with the Sprint repeater is that the Sprint device only runs on 3G, which is fine since at home I'm on wifi. The phone seems to want to connect to the one bar of LTE that I have rather than that. Is there a way to force it to only look for 3G connections instead of LTE? Under the Connections > Mobile Networks section of the settings menu, I don't see it. I recall seeing it there before on this device and other devices.
