So I tried using ROM manager to install cyanogen mod 10.1 on my AT&T 16gb GS3. Was already rooted, had superuser so on and so forth.
1. Downloaded CWM RomManager.
2. Flashed CWM Recovery.
3. Downloaded CM 10.1 port for i317 (the AT&T GN2 model) and the 4.2.1 gApps zips.
4. Chose to install ROM from SD card in RomManager, added both CM 10.1 but NO gApps (why? because I'm hardheaded), and only selected install (did not wipe cache or user data at this point).
5. Received blue CyanogenMod boot screen... excited... but it remains on the boot screen. Sad face.
6. Removed battery to power the device off, placed battery back in, and then booted into recovery mode (CWM recovery)
Tried clearing cache, reflashing stock rom, factory reset, got nothing.
so after I wipe and reboot a couple of times, It works. Cyanogen 10.1 looks sick. Then I realize no Gapps.
So again i return to google. I download the zip file from (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1965290) and transfer to sd card.
But After I factory reset I lost CWM and I'm stuck with the standard droid recovery
So I try to apply update from external storage, pick the zip file, and I get a dead Android.
So yeah I'm pretty stuck.

Was trying to flash the ICS ROM V5 but it got stuck on the boot animation. I did a factory reset, surprisingly it was still there. So i used "Team Win Recovery Project" aka "twrp-crespo-2[DOT]0[DOT]0RC0[DOT]img" in nexusshacks.com. I went in there to do a factory reset but i wiped the ACTUAL system instead. So when i reboot i am stuck on Google. Unfortunely i only had 1 back up which is in ClockworkMod, but i cant access that. I dont mind my lost files because i can recover that but i want my phone to work again. Can i copy the nexus s contents from another nexus s and place it in my SD and will it work? If you guys have ideas please do reply because i need my phone fixed asap. Bootloader unlocked and rooted using superuser.

okay,am not very familiar with TWRP but your problem doesn't seem that big,you wiped the /system which should not affect your USB storage data (even if you wiped the USB storage it's not a problem),try to boot into the bootloader (volume up + power button) then go to recovery, mount the USB storage and put a ROM on it,then just flash the ROM and your device should boot up normally,i think you weren't stuck at the bootanimation since when you flash a new ROM the first boot could take from 5 to 10 minutes.
i usually do a clean install before flashing a new ROM (format system, data, cache, boot) and the device just boot up normally after flashing the new ROM so it's not a problem if you wiped your system just flash a new ROM.

I did this same thing a few weeks ago. I just had to reinstall everything (including the recovery) from fastboot. Worked like a charm.
I used the nexusshack tut to root my nexus had no problems.
You could go into recovery, mount usb storage, find the clockworkmod directory and copy that to your pc..
do a full data wipe and flash a new rom, then install rom manager flash CWM recovery . move the clockworkmod directory back to your phone. boot into recovery and restore you backup.
Just an idea .. not sure if it could work..(take no responsibility is it doesnt)
I have clockworkmod recovery installed and rooted. It's been a few months since I rooted, and can't remember exactly what I did, but OTA updates stopped working. Hence, I am still on gingerbread.
Trying to flash a custom rom now, CM9. I tried the rom manager method several times, found out that wasn't recommended, and then tried the recovery method.
The same thing happens either way: it boots into CM9, but the boot animation keeps playing.
With the rom manager method, I tried wiping nothing, then tried wiping dalvik only, then tried... whatever the other option was, wipe cache and data?
With CMW recovery I downloaded CM9 zip and the appropriate GAPPS, moved onto the internal SD card, booted into recovery mode Wipe data/factory reset, then Wipe cache partition, then install both.
I'm able to restore from backup each time, but this is annoying.
Thank you
1. Install ICS Radio (UCLF6)
2. Wipe Data/Factory Reset
3. Format /System
4. Install CM9.zip
5. Install Gapps.zip
6. Wipe Cache/Dalvik
7. Reboot
:good:

So "UCLF6" appears to be rom that is similar to stock, I'm guessing the idea here is that I'm resetting the phone but retaining root, the idea being that something on my phone is messed up and preventing CM9 from booting but doesn't prevent the current rom from booting?
Two other questions
1. Won't format/system wipe out all my backups in addition to my data?
2. Have you had or seen this problem before? I'm hesitant to commit myself to something, especially with no backups, if it's just a theoretical fix. I do appreciate it either way.
UCLF6 is an ICS modem/radio you need if you're coming from gb.
If you back up though CWM you can restore again later if you want.
Formatting /system will delete the operating system.
Formatting /data will delete your apps/settings/wallpaper etc...

I had a similar boot animation loop when I went from stock GB to stock ICS. What seemed to fix it was updating my CWM from 5.0.2.6 (non-touch) to 5.5.0.4 (touch). (BTW, I couldn't find an advantage of stock ICS over stock GB. I have since put on CM9 which I'm liking).

Still got the boot loop.
When I did the "Wipe data/factory reset" I did get an error message during one of the processes"
"Error mounting sdcard/.android_secure!
Skipping format"
I had a boot loop problem when I first tried to flash JB. I went from GB to ICS with a custom rom a few months back, but I couldn't get any of the new JB roms to work. I ended up having to upgrade my CWM to the touch version in order to get JB flash to work. Also, a tip-- the boot animation will take a minute or two even when it is working. Don't assume it is still a problem if you see it more than once.
Hi,
Need some help here.
I accidentally wipe the OS on my TF101. Then i follow the instruction using easyflasher to push the official 4.0.3 firmware on my tablet. It get back alive.
I root it and when i install TWRP and wanna install custom firmware like CM 10 or eos3 or eos 4. It flashed ok, but all stuck at the icon boot screen and just wouldn't go into the system.
Anybody know what happened or experience this before?

did you perform a full wipe before flashing the roms? - cache, dalvik and data?
in TWRP you can also use the wipe rom option as an added cleanser that will not affect any saved data or affect anything else.
it sounds like you havent and its causing you to bootloop. :silly:
remember your jumping from a stock asus base to aosp built roms of a different version of android ie ICS to Jellybean.
if you did and thats not the issue then my suggestions are below:
1 - try an asus based rom like Energy or ARHD
then full wipe and now try flashing something else.
2 - try a cold boot from linux: volume - plus power (do not hit volume +, and let it take you to the cold boot menu) - select cold boot
3. i would place a rom of your choice onto a micro sd and go back into recovery and format the internal sd - then flash your chosen rom from the external sd .
4. make sure you perform a full wipe before you flash anything as step 3 is a last resort (although if youve already lost any media you had then its no biggy)
I’m having a problem with my Android phone. It won’t turn on for some reason and when I try, it just loops the start up screen and does a short vibration about every 5 seconds. It’s running CyanogenMod and it’s a Samsung Galaxy S III SCH-I535. It was working fine until recently. Please help. Just so you all know, I already tried clearing the cache and the Dalvik cache, reinstalling CyanogenMod onto my phone in recovery mode (it doesn't let me because "no file_contexts"). I don't know what version of CyanogenMod I have because I can't check because my phone won't even turn on. Thanks for all the help.
Probably a bad zip file. I recommend you download the latest version (or checkout the unofficial version) and put it on the sdcard. Then format /system and install the newest.
Worse case scenario you have to Odin to stock, reroot, unlock the bootloader, install cwm/twrp recovery, and then do a fresh install.

I never used an SD card during the process. My phone didn't come with one so I just used the system storage. Should I go for the worst case scenario solution you mentioned since I don't think I can access the system's contents without turning the phone on, or are there any other solutions that aren't so drastic?

You can try these options:
1), Get one or borrow one SDcard, copy another rom (copy about 3) on the SDcard, boot into recovery, wipe cache, dalvik cache, data, system, format sdcard (format sdcard will wipe all your video/pictures, etc..on your local storage, if you have important stuff then skip this). Now reflash a nice and clean rom like http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1973982 and see if you can boot up.
2) You can boot into Odin mode (download mode) and flash a full factory stock firmware. After this you will be back to stock and you have to re root, unlock bootloader, reflash custom recovery and so on.
Your storage probably corrupted and I would try option 1 first..Good luck!
Here are the particulars.
rooted
Display JZO54K
Fingerprint = motorola/tervigon/wingray:4.1.2/JZO54K/.....
Loaded elementalx - xoom- v1.3 three months ago ran fine. Stupidly, I did not flash a backup. Now after deleting cache, factory reset, stuck in "loading apps" after splash, the boot loops back to motorola screen where I can launch CWM v4.0.0.4 - I want to get a ROM on there and continue using this mission-critical dinosaur. Can someone help?
I guess the real question is can a rom be copied onto the ext-sd card via windows out of the xoom? If so will CWM see it and will it work?
Have not tried connecting and using ADB. Not feeling confident enough at this point. ext SD still has data but when in CWM device does not show up in Windows.
TIA for any help

I pushed a stock rooted rom via ADB (I found the internal sdcard is accessible via the ADB shell) . The stock rom showed up in the CWM select zip file list. Installed the rom and the xoom animation freezes then continues the boot loop - regardless of rom installed. Cleaned system cache and davik cache as well after factory wipe. I am beginning to think hardware issues. No amount of cajoling will get this thing to boot into its OS. Either memory or processor - when it worked, I did have it running incredicontrol and 1.4 ghz and the max memory limitation upped to 64MB in order to run a lecture player for school.
