[Q] How to use surface RT as secondary screen - Microsoft Surface

Hi everyone, i have a problems that need your help.
I would like to use my surface as a secondary for my laptop. i connect surface with desktop via hdmi port but i dont know how to set up the Extend mode to share laptop to surface.
Can anyone help me?
Thank you!

Which version of Windows are you using? Do you have the HDMI adapter to go from the surface to the HDMI port?

If you want to extend your laptop monitor to your surface you would need a HDMI input which the surface RT does not have.

Hi,
Unfortunately the Surface does not have any hardware for video input. It costs a lot for that kind of hardware and is unlikely to be widely used, and so most devices do not include it.
The hdmi port on the surface is output only.
There may be methods through software and WiFi, but it's not likely at this time.

Ok... The surface only has hdmi output (i.e) you can take the surface's screen and put onto a second screen.
If I am understanding you correctly, it sounds like what you are trying to do is opposite (extending your laptop screen to a second screen). You would need an hdmi input to accept the signal from your laptop to the surface which unfortunately it does not have.

As has been previously said, this isn't possible via any hardware methods (wrong type of port on the Surface RT). You might be able to use a desktop sharing app (similar in concept to Teamviewer or Remote Desktop) to extend your display over Wi-Fi, although there are always compromises with this method.

thanks all for your support

[Q] A few questions?!? Help!

Just got the 16gb version but not sure if it's a keeper yet...
1. Can I connect and use an external portable 320gb drive to the transformer without the keyboard dock? There's no usb what do i do?
2. How do I access normal sites not the mobile versions? by rooting or should I dl a different browser?
Thank you guys!
Assume the hard drive is USB, you will need a USB port for simple connection Some people have investigated using the power connector will varying results.
If you have the latest update, you can select full site on some sites. Do a search on connecting hard drives.
For harddrive you need the keyboard dock or apparently there is so posed to be a usb dongle but i dont know the state of it
For browser go into the browser setting hit user-agent string and change it to desktop

Probably referring to the god-awful trickle of optional add-ons for the TF from Asus. I've not seen it (have heard of it's existence though) of an adapter that would plug into the charge port of the TF turning the port into a USB host. Samsung has this for their tabs. Right now, using the keyboard dock will allow you to attach an external hd. I have attached a Toshiba 1TB USB drive this way with great success.

thanks Is there an actual name for it? I'd like to find it.
I have no need for the keyboard... I have a netbook I was looking to replace & was going to make the tablet my main "computer" ( hubby has a laptop if need be)
Wondering if it was the wrong choice of the tablet for me , wanted to get xoom( does it have a usb dock?) but found this one for $100 less & reviews made this sound the same & many stated that it did indeed had a usb port .

Surface RT to TV

I want to watch movies on my RT on my downtime from work. I have an apartment with a flat screen TV that has HDMI, VGA, all the red, white, and yellow pins, USB ports. I hate cables. I have wifi, but I am unsure if the TV has wifi or bluetooth. Of course the Surface has wifi and bluetooth (i think).
I think you know where I am going. How do I wirelessly watch what I have on my Surface on my TV? Easiest, cheapest, wireless way. Thank you, lgnationrc

Bluetooth won't be high enough bandwidth for any sort of respectable video feed (nor does the RT support streaming out to it), and I'm not aware of any wifi streaming that works from the RT, unless you have a 360 on the TV.
You'll need to attach some computer or game console to the TV, and find an app in the store that does wifi streaming out.

I have been trying the same thing. I think our best bet would be DLNA tv/adapter. I have bought the adapter and it is not working.

If your TV has some kind of internet connection and dlna (LAN or wifi) you can go to the explorer in desktop mode, right click your movie an click send to your TV. It will play nicely.

That's cool! Just whish that the entire screen could be sent to the TV via DLNA, I mean the startscreen or an app or a game. As it is now it has to be built in to the app as I understand it, I would like to be able to clone the screen no matter what app I'm using.
You can do that with a simple micro hdmi to hdmi cable.

Yes, but the idea here was to use WiFi and DLNA to do it wireless.
Has wireless hdmi been developed enough to just be a small adapter on your tablet?
Any news on this? Did anyone find a way to clone the Surface to a TV wireless?

Android HDMI as wireless display receiver?

Hi
I have a small desk for my monitor and laptop (lenovo T420 win7 64bit). At the moment I have a displayport to hdmi cable, but the plug is sticking out over the edge - so the dog hits it
Therefore I was wondering, can I use an Android unit as wireless display receiver for my Windows 7 PC ?
I have searched the internet - and MiraCast is one option , but i am not sure my T420 supports it - and it should be somehow buggy
At the moment I have a noname RK3066 HDMI stick (Android 4.1) not super stable though, and a SonyEricsson Arc S (LT18i) with HDMI, a Galaxy S3 with MHL adapter.
Since I work a lot in worksheets it is important the stick runs full HD (1920x1080) but my laptop screen only supports 1600x900 - and offcourse the text is clear and crisp. And it is also important It should auto launch, so I do not have to click the device every time.
My Wifi is 802.11n
Thank you all for any reply (and sorry for my bad English)

I have a 803iv by rikomagik. It's a rk3188 so it "should" be fast. Miracast was a joke from my phone, and that's two android devices. Good luck with Windows cross platform incompatibilities. I install home theaters and residential & commercial electronics, and unless a technology is standardised industry wide (like HDBaseT or even 802.11) you're SOL on interoperability. Your best bet would be a DLNA or a kit (sender & receiver), not a hodgepodge with android/Windows and resolution issues.
---------- Post added at 10:03 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:56 PM ----------
WAIT, a T420 has WiDi...that IS miracast...which IS a standard. have you gone into the stick settings and turned it on and just tried it? The only problem might be crappy chineese implementation...that's why I figured mine did not work. That or my custom firmware...
I have tried the omega rom on my sgs3 (since non stock rom doesn't have HDMI/ mhl out) and mirrorop receiver app and windows mirrorop sender . This works, not flawlessly since there is some delay and sound is not playing 100% fluid. I have to test this further.
I cannot make my laptop find my sgs3 through the Intel widi software, so standard widi receiver / miracast isn't working (yet)

so can android's hdmi out work like IN to show?
I think that hardware doesnt support it.
Have a look at splashtop streamer. It might be suitable for your needs
Edit: the app is actually called Spacedesk. I just had a look aty tablet. I was able to use my Samsung tablet as an extra screen for my laptop

[Q] Moga + Slimport = lag

Here's what I have:
- Nexus 5 32GB
- Moga Pro (original)
- CableMatters SlimPort adapter
- Moga Pivot App
I cannot get 2 feet away from my phone, otherwise the controller loses signal and controller inputs (directional pad, button presses) get really laggy and janky, or are just flat out not registered.
Super GNES is flat out impossible to play. Super Mario World has at least a 1-2 second lag from button press to actual result on screen, regardless of how close I am to the phone.
What gives? Moga is offering to replace the controller, but I'm honestly wondering if the phone is just having too much trouble rendering the game on the big screen and accepting inputs from a bluetooth controller.
Any other info is needed, let me know. Thanks!
Sorry that I can't help directly with your setup but I have a slimport on the way and I use a Nyko Playpad with my Nexus 5. I'll get the phone hooked up my TV and the controller when it arrives and see how it works to see if I have any problems.
Have you tried running the phone in flight mode and then enabling bluetooth as the only wireless connection? Also try killing all background processes? Are you running a battery saving app which throttles connections or CPU?
That is unfortunately the extent of my phone knowledge - turn various options on and off till I've exhausted all options then cry for help online ?

I use my Moga Pro Power with a Slimport adapter and it's been working great for me. Been playing NFS:MW, Riptide GP2, and Conduit HD. No lag here.
I haven't tested it with any emulators but native games work just fine.

Have you tried playing a regular game and not an emulator? I wonder if it's because of the extra processor power required to run an emulator.
I have and I run into the issue where if I'm more than a couple feet away, the game does not register controller inputs. I don't think it's the Nexus 5 because this is an RMA and I had the same issue on both (unless it's a software problem). I have ZERO issues if I play without the slim port connected.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Just tested playing both super GNES and a regular game from about a 10 foot distance on just the phone, and zero issues with connectivity. It's clearly when I'm connected to the big screen that's the issue. Now the question is:
1) can the phone not handle all those inputs at the same time? (why does it need to mirror on the screen at the same time?). Is there just too much awesome going on at once?
2) Is it the slimport adapter?
3) is it my onkyo receiver?
4) Is it my hdmi cable?
I want to rule out the above 2-4, as I've had issues of control presses flat out not being registered, but I'll keep testing it out. Hopefully someone else has had this issue and found a solution.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
What length HDMI cable are you using?
I remember that my SG3 wouldn't work on a 5 metre HDMI lead but would on a 2 metre one. Not sure how Slimport differs from MHL but try different cables to be sure and different ports in the tele.

Same issue here:
Nexus 5 32GB
Android 4.2.2
Moga Pro Power
CableMatters SlimPort adapter
Moga Pivot App
With just the phone & controller, everything works fine.
If SlimPort is plugged in, I can't get more than a few feet away without losing control/connection
This happens regardless of whether the HDMI cable is connected to the slimport.
---------- Post added at 06:49 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:37 PM ----------
Just figured out how to fix mine. Wrap the slimport adapter in foil.
Cheap adapter must be radiating crap in the 2.4GHz band where bluetooth lives.
I'm going to give your solution a try tonight. It sounds plausible that the adapter is affecting the bluetooth frequency and we'll see if foil fixes that, and keeps the aliens away. Will follow up.

Note 9 and Dex on Sentio Superbook

So, I recently bought a Sentio Superbook to play around with. It is essentially a dumbed-down laptop that connects to your phone via USB-C. Sentio has its own proprietary desktop experience software that runs on Android and then connects to your phone to present the Sentio Desktop on the Superbook via USB-C and DisplayLink. However, I wanted to use Dex as I find the Dex experience much better than the Sentio Desktop (or any other desktop experience software I have tried on Android). Plus i want to run Linux on Dex.
The problem is that I could not find a way to trigger Dex to run on my Note 9 unless it detects an HDMI connection, since that is the only way Dex will launch that i know of. Since the Superbook doesn't have an HDMI-in, only USB-C, Dex wouldn't fire off when connecting to the Superbook.
One night, after a few beers, I wondered if i could trick the Note 9 into thinking that there was an HDMI connection when there really wasn't one available. I already had a USB-C Hub with an HDMI port that i bought on Amazon. So, back to Amazon I went, where I ordered an HDMI Dummy Plug / Headless Display Emulator. These are used typically on headless (no monitor) remote servers, tricking the GPUs into thinking there is an external monitor connected via HDMI. So, i plugged the HDMI Emulator into the HDMI out port on the USB-C hub, then the USB-C hub into the phone, and Dex immediately launched. From there i connected the USB-C hub into the Superbook (via a USB-C to USB-C cable), and Dex was running on the Superbook.
If you look at the picture, you can see the Display Emulator sticking out of the USB-C hub, right at the corner of my phone. Sorry for the crappy picture, I took the photo with an old Nextbit Robin since the Note 9 was being used.

See the image for how i have everything setup ... The main USB-C wire from the hub goes to the phone (top right corner of image), and then obviously I put the dummy HDMI plug into the HDMI port. Finally, where the image shows 'DC IN' is actually just another USB-C connection, so I run a USB-C to USB-C wire from here to the USB-C port on the Superbook.
The hub does not require additional power, it didn't need it when i used the hub to connect to a standard HDMI monitor, and it doesn't require it in this configuration either.
I made it

Ok i managed to do it, while im waiting for the dummy to arrive, i used an HDMI cable connected to a turned off monitor.
My type C hub needs power to function, it does also when i use DEX on monitor, so I had the hub powered on, the type-c connected to Note9, the usb-c to usb-c cable from SB to the hub and it worked. The only trick i had to use is to install and run the Display link presenter app, without that, it doesnt start.
How does it all work? Does it feel responsive? Touchpad works well?
Would love to get more details on the overall usability.

I would say its pretty much as using Dex on a monitor, I use a bluetooth mouse because the trackpad of the superbook is still not very responsive.
For the rest of the usage i can say no lag at all.
Im going to use Dex Max to watch netflix full screen and then i will be set.
Update on the setup
I just finished building this case for the dongle i created, as you can see in the picture, its still an early build but its a start.
Since im not a developer nor a engineer i had to use cables and adapters, and since my type-c hub needs power im giving it power form the usb of the superbook, while the type c get the video into the SB. I will later on create space for the USBs, or at least one of them.
Im open to ideas and/or help and suggestions.

Hi Cinnarello, which hub are you using. I had one that triggered DeX fine but without a PD port I couldn't charge it. I got another that had PD and a USB C but this time (despite being advertised as DeX compatible) it gave me a message "Ensure HDMI is connected properly" and I get no out put. I tried it with different cables and my wife's S9+ but it made no difference.

Great, just ordered one. I wonder why that item isn't available in the UK? Luckily I am still a citizen of the EU, at least for the the next couple of weeks, so I could order from amazon.it. Grazie.

Can you tell where you bought the item that attaches your smartphone to the Superbook ?
Thanks.

See the item he links to in post #11. I got the same one and it works great.
Hi
Thx for answer.
I'm not talking about the Hub but about the plastic item located between screen edge and smartphone, plastic item that holds both of them.
Thx. Cheers.

Grazie! I bought a really small hub that I was happy to find, but only upon arrival did I find out that the usb-c on the hub was only for power. I ordered one like yours now :cyclops:
Just a fair bit of warning about this company:

Hi,
Easier to make one using a Pi-Top V2 and a few components off of Amazon or buy one of these when they are available.

The DeX laptop dock you mention actually is a Sentio Superbook. Somehow his works without using a USB-C dock?
