get into recovery without volume buttons - General Questions and Answers

Hey everyone I have a HTC inspire which I flashed jelly time onto, before that my volume buttons worked but now they don't work and the button is complety gone HTC did a very bad job with that it easily came out... So recently when I boot the phone on it boots the normal jelly time startup and the black screen. I have seen the only way to fix this is either factory reset or reflash ROM. But I am unable to do that since ,y volume button is broken. I have read that you can get to recovery via adb and or flash via adb can someone help me out please?

you can connect your HTC phone to your computer via USB cable, and use the command below, before that you need to install adb shell on Windows.
adb reboot bootloader

Also, you could enter Recovery mode through ROM Toolbox and if you're using TWRP, its touch, so you dont need hardware keys.

So you're stuck on booting and your hardware buttons dont work?
There is a way to get into the recovery in such a situation but that usually relies on the hardware buttons. What device do you have? What recovery?

Try this
Remove battery n reinsert it
Now connect the phone to charger.
Don't do anything keep the phone as it is for 5 -10 min.
It will automatically go to recovery

Im assuming you have android sdk installed
Connect your phone, locate adb using cmd prompt (change directory) (RUN AS ADMIN), type 'adb reboot recovery' (no quotes)

I will try this in the morning. What screen do I use the command at? Anytime?

Follow these fool-proof steps:
Locate your android sdk folders-> navigate to the folder where adb is located ->hold shift + right click on the folder containing adb and select ''open command window here'' ( this will automatically take care of pointing the directory to that location) -> 'adb reboot recovery' ENTER
This will automatically enter recovery. I suggest you restore your old backup .
As for your volume buttons, you should be able to fix it easily if you know a little bit of soldering and know-how.

HTC Desire HD hard reset without volume buttons
I have htc desire hd and my volume buttons is broken ,my phone is much dispute and have lots of bugs i want to HARD RESET no factory reset only hard reset with rebote. Please help me how to reset my HTC DHD without volume buttons!!
!!sorry for my english!!

SOLVED! (At least for me)
To whom may still be interested, I found a way to get into recovery and subsequently wipe data/factory reset the HTC Inspire 4G/Desire HD without using the volume buttons.
Phone background: the phone that I used had the internal volume buttons broken. It was rooted and unlocked using the effen hack kit, then I flashed a custom ROM on it and I forgot to do a factory reset before I firstly boot up the phone with the new ROM. So it was stuck on the boot animation forever.
Steps for getting into recovery mode without volume buttons:
1. Take the battery off
2. Plug the phone to a wall charger for at least one or two minutes.
3. Put the battery back on along with the battery door and don't touch any buttons.
- The orange led on the front will light up and stay on for a few seconds before the phone automattically gets into recovery
Note: use the touch capacitive buttons to manipulate recovery:
- Home/Menu buttons to navigate up/down
- Back button to go back
- Search button to select
That's pretty much it. At this point you can do anything!
I hope this can help someone out there... If it helped you please hit the thanks button!

You can use adb commands to enter in recovery mode. Connect your android to PC. Enable adb debugging and open command prompt in PC.
Type "adb devices" without qoutes and enter then type "adb reboot recovery" and enter. These commands boot your android in recovery mode.

HTC Screen only on startup. Volume control faulty

I've got a curly one. I lost super user app so I was doing a restore through EXT4 boot as I have no working volume rocker.
The program got stuck and screen went black.
Upon restart , I get to the HTC screen of death and nothing else.
I cannot hold down volume and power button as volume button is shot.
Is there a way to connect through USB and fire up a recovery screen ?
i've got somewhat of the same issue - due to some water damage, my vol - button does not seem to function anymore. i would like to keep flashing ROMs, but am afraid of getting into a bootloop and not being able to access hboot. is there any way to bypass the vol- power button combo for getting into hboot?
I've got a faulty vol+ button here. No clue why.

Yes but you have to be up and running to use it.
I use 4 ext boot which allows me to use recovery with out the need for a volume control. Just need power, menu and home . buttons.

power button doesn't work either? I thought that functioned as the 'enter' button... Imnuts' post will work for sure, but I have to ask why are you in the stock android recovery? unless you meant CWM?
Thanks imnuts, what is the easiest way to adb reboot?
My screen is showing similar to the attached photo but the trackball statement it instead says: [Enter: Home Key, Select : Vol UP / Vol Down
Its asking me to use the home key for my enter but my home key is not functioning. But if you know of an alternative I am happy to hear what your thoughts are.

ADB (Android Debug Bridge, I think) is tethering your phone to your pc and pushing/pulling files or forcing commands to your phone using the command terminal... it doesn't work right away as you need the latest android sdk files, java/jdk files, and altered C:/ path directory (assuming you're running windows, I think thats how it works if anyone can help me out here )
does the power button work as a 'select' button though? also can't you just battery pull and restart the phone or does it restart right into that recovery? just an FYI that is the stock android recovery which you can't (or rather shouldn't) be doing anything in, CWM is recommended... I vaguely recall there being another button that would work like the search button but I'm not sure
Thanks for the advise anoninja118, I appreciate the help.
So last night I tried ADB but was not successful at it, maybe ill look into that more. Unfortunately my phone does not allow the power button to work as the 'select' button. Yeah and pulling the battery leads me back to the same recovery screen. What is CWM?

CWM is Clockwork Mod, its the custom version of that recovery that will allow you to flash files and change options: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112804
you can flash superuser (what gives you root access) easily in there and just reboot and presto you're rooted... I haven't seen any tutorials on how to use CWM since its fairly easy, to boot into it just hold power+volume up+home until 'Samsung' appears then let go of power and hold the other two until it comes up, then use volume keys and power button to navigate and select
Odin is required to install CWM first though and this thread gives a little info on that: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160580

Volume button fault - Any other ways to go to bootloader?

Hello all,
my sensation's volume rocker is faulty. By pressing volume down and power on, it will not boot into boot loader thus cannot enter recovery.
I know i can use software to boot into it boot loader but what if I am getting bootloops and unable to boot into rom?

I am planning to flash the factory RUU and go claim my warranty after i get my Galaxy nexus..

Possibly not unless your timing is amazing!
Are you stuck in bootloops now or is this hypothetical?
Please, tell if your volumne rocker is so broken that it cant even turn up/turn down volumne during normal use of phone?
If it's ok, thet I suggest method of booting into recovery which I use (and i had problems to boot before - thought it's vol. rocker):
1. press volume down button and hold it!
2. press power button for 2-3 seconds and then release, still holding the volumne down
3. phone boots into recovery after few seconds.
Hope it might help you.

I understood that he can't enter recovery due to some volume button fault. When you stuck in bootloop only thing you can do is pull out the battery, no keys/buttons are usable - tested myself :/

not really hypothetical.. in fact i experienced it earlier..
my volume up/down seems to have a mind of his own and at times i will enter "safe mode"
thereafter it will auto reboot unless i am quick enough to do a factory wipe under settings... it will still boot into safe mode but wont auto reboot.
so after knocking a few times on the volume rocker, i am able to boot into normal mode but the volume rocker isnt working. Pressing it once, will cause to decrease the volume and switch to silent mode.

I dunno if HTC singapore will honor the warranty cause this is a hardware defect and nothing to do with any rom or unlock..
Even in bootloader mode, press up will cause it to go down or at times up. pressing down may or may not respond.

If you have CWM recovery installed (im not sure about other recoverys), you can connect your phone to your computer when it's off and you will have access to a limited adb provided by CWM. You can then use the command "adb reboot recovery" or "adb reboot bootloader" or whatever to do what you need to do.
Wipe all then cant boot into bootloader
Hi, i'm really sorry to bring back this post,
your fear had become my nightmare in reality.
The volume button was somehow (either physically spoil or is not capture click)
during booting process.
I have completely forgotten about it, and do complete wipe
(select wipe all except sdcard in touch recovery).
So, now the phone is completely clean (without rom)
and i'm unable to trigger bootloader/recovery via pwr/vol down button.
I have try take out battery, leave it for 10min and try press
all those button without casing/rocker;
press & hold vol down, den plug in battery;
and press both vol up & down then only pwr button.
The phone now (i assume) boot normally,
stop at HTC logo because there is no rom inside
(just like normal pc boot pass bios but cant find OS).
ironically, i live at singapore too... haha...
---------- Post added at 10:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:51 PM ----------
I read somewhere that the person use pin to press the button really hard
and it manage to go into bootloader
(but I cant find back that post now)
Searching in forum recommend me to peel off the
volume button cover n use pin to press on it directly
(which I do not dare )
So now I sent it to repair shop,
hopefully that person using either g-box or gmbox
(flash box start with G) and can push RUU inside.
God bless me.
p/s : Sorry I should post in Q&A...

[Q] HTC sensation can't enter recovery mode/ HBoot

Hi,
I had rooted my HTC sensation and had a custom ROM. For some reason i had to restore a nandroid backup. After completing the restore, i restart the phone but its stuck in htc splash screen.
I am not able to reach Recovery screen / HBOOT screen again. I tried Volume down + Power button, its not working ( maybe my vol key is bad ). Also, phone is not getting recognised by computer through USB cable to run commands from there.
Any suggestions as to what i should do next ??

Then wiping the cache in recovery. It rebooted and said "Android is upgrading" and then everything was back to normal.

Fastboot Mode Issue

Dear All,
Please help me regarding fastboot. When I press 3 keys (vol-up, vol-down and power key) while phone is off. I see the black and white screen written boot modes. From there when I select AP Fastbood device is restart with red Motorola logo and end up on home screen.. I have tried several times to turn off the device and repeat this process but no issue still there..
Moreover, if I did not select any options from boot modes than device automatically rebooted after 3 or 4 seconds..
Please help me out.. I want to unlock the boot loader root and install custom ROM..
Currently Model Number is XT925 and device is completely stock.. never rooted before...

After you use the volume down key to highlight "Fastboot", do you then press the volume up key to select it? If you just sit there and wait it will reboot normally. You must press the volume up key after you've highlighted the menu option.

try this,
-install adb on your pc
-plug in phone when powered up
- open a command prompt in your adb dir
- type in: adb devices then enter. it should show your phone in the prompt. also check your phone, there may be a popup to acknowledge.
- rerun adb devices until it shows your phone properly or you cant proceed
-now type in: adb reboot bootloader
if it works, the phone should reboot to the fastboot screen.
if it doesnt stick in fastboot, im sorry but i dont know what else to tell you to try.

That's the entry to stock recovery. You have to push a combination of buttons from there to get into recovery. I forget the button combination, it has been posted many times, try searching or wait for someone else to jump in with the answer.

Not sure where to post this question been reading so many post my eyes are tired......
- XT926 upgraded to kitkat 183.46 last week via flash in RSD from JB 4.1.2
- Root went well DONE (Towel root .apk)
- Unlock went well DONE (Motopocalypse .apk) yes fastboot shows the #3
- Flashed TWRP 2.7.1 DONE (did it using the adb in motopocolypse)
- Backed up my current stock ROM in TWRP seemed to go well the program confirmed the backup was successful...So I thought
- Got confident and wanted to try flashing CM11 (Kitkat version)
- After flashing CM11 my phone got stuck at boot like many others have.... no problem I backed up my stock ROM in TWRP.....So I thought
- Went to restore my stock ROM using TWRP and yup you guessed it like many others the restore failed half way through
Not a big deal starting fresh can be a good thing BUT I really need my old text messages and all I have is a USB backup of the phone (Internal/SDcard) on my PC and of course the TWRP back-up on the SDcard that won’t restore ...... Is there any way to get these messages back to my phone????

Not sure how to help you with your immediate problem at hand, but going forward, I definitely recommend the sms backup + from the Google Play Store. Nice thing with that app is, you can link it to your gmail account, and all your text messages are backed up to your gmail.
