Volume button fault - Any other ways to go to bootloader? - HTC Sensation

Hello all,
my sensation's volume rocker is faulty. By pressing volume down and power on, it will not boot into boot loader thus cannot enter recovery.
I know i can use software to boot into it boot loader but what if I am getting bootloops and unable to boot into rom?
Any ADB commands to make the phone boot into bootloader straight?
I am planning to flash the factory RUU and go claim my warranty after i get my Galaxy nexus..

Possibly not unless your timing is amazing!
Are you stuck in bootloops now or is this hypothetical?

Please, tell if your volumne rocker is so broken that it cant even turn up/turn down volumne during normal use of phone?
If it's ok, thet I suggest method of booting into recovery which I use (and i had problems to boot before - thought it's vol. rocker):
1. press volume down button and hold it!
2. press power button for 2-3 seconds and then release, still holding the volumne down
3. phone boots into recovery after few seconds.
Hope it might help you.

Implying he can't control volume in a bootloop, I seriously hope this guy uses 4EXT touch, or else he needs to replace the rocker.
Can you flash zips from USB fastboot?

I understood that he can't enter recovery due to some volume button fault. When you stuck in bootloop only thing you can do is pull out the battery, no keys/buttons are usable - tested myself :/

not really hypothetical.. in fact i experienced it earlier..
my volume up/down seems to have a mind of his own and at times i will enter "safe mode"
thereafter it will auto reboot unless i am quick enough to do a factory wipe under settings... it will still boot into safe mode but wont auto reboot.
so after knocking a few times on the volume rocker, i am able to boot into normal mode but the volume rocker isnt working. Pressing it once, will cause to decrease the volume and switch to silent mode.

I dunno if HTC singapore will honor the warranty cause this is a hardware defect and nothing to do with any rom or unlock..
Even in bootloader mode, press up will cause it to go down or at times up. pressing down may or may not respond.

If you in a boot loop adb should see it for split couple seconds so with the phone connected I would keep trying to do adb reboot recovery

That's what I thought but it didn't happen when I tried it on mine.

From Fastboot, adb commands also work, provided vol - works while powering on. This sucks dude, sorry.

If you have CWM recovery installed (im not sure about other recoverys), you can connect your phone to your computer when it's off and you will have access to a limited adb provided by CWM. You can then use the command "adb reboot recovery" or "adb reboot bootloader" or whatever to do what you need to do.

Wipe all then cant boot into bootloader
Hi, i'm really sorry to bring back this post,
your fear had become my nightmare in reality.
The volume button was somehow (either physically spoil or is not capture click)
during booting process.
I have completely forgotten about it, and do complete wipe
(select wipe all except sdcard in touch recovery).
So, now the phone is completely clean (without rom)
and i'm unable to trigger bootloader/recovery via pwr/vol down button.
I have try take out battery, leave it for 10min and try press
all those button without casing/rocker;
press & hold vol down, den plug in battery;
and press both vol up & down then only pwr button.
The phone now (i assume) boot normally,
stop at HTC logo because there is no rom inside
(just like normal pc boot pass bios but cant find OS).
ironically, i live at singapore too... haha...
---------- Post added at 10:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:51 PM ----------
I read somewhere that the person use pin to press the button really hard
and it manage to go into bootloader
(but I cant find back that post now)
Searching in forum recommend me to peel off the
volume button cover n use pin to press on it directly
(which I do not dare )
So now I sent it to repair shop,
hopefully that person using either g-box or gmbox
(flash box start with G) and can push RUU inside.
God bless me.
p/s : Sorry I should post in Q&A...

Get the phone off. Pull the battery and re-insert. Open fastboot
Fastboot reboot-bootloader
And if you want to flash a ruu directly:
Fastboot erase cache
Fastboot oem rebootRUU
And then flash the ruu

Hi, can you tell me exactly step by step how to open fastboot?
pull out the battery, press vol down (??), reinsert?
fastboot devices go no response after booted and halt at htc logo.
Thank you very much.

Have you tried finding where the rocker lines up with the buttons on the phone, and just used the buttons without the back attached?

[Q] HTC One S - Cannot get into Bootloader

I have searched the forum but no luck on this one.
When I Press Power and Down Vol HTC One S just reboots - it does not go into Bootloader menu.
I cant take the battery out as suggested elsewhere because battery is non-removable.
Fast Boot is Off in the Power Menu.
Any suggestions ?

Hi,
maybe you can use the ADB to get in the bootloader.
just look onto this HERE
the text there is english because i've only the german explaining and so i don' need to translate it.

Hi zobojoe, any luck with getting to the bootloader? I have HTC One S imported from Germany with T-Mobile branding and I want to get rid of that branding by flashing the stock ROM but can't get in to the bootloader same as you. What version of phone do you have?

Hey, thank's for trying to help! I've seen the thread you posted before - used it to get CWM and root but I've spent last 3 hours trying to get the stock ROM in my phone (I really hate the T-mobile branding) and nothing worked. What I did was I downloaded RUU_Ville_U_HTC_Europe_1.53.401.2_Radio_0.15.31501 S.19_10.12.31501S.06L_release_251412_signed.exe and tried to flash that using RUU. It didn't let me. So I at least got the zip file from the exe (temp method) and tried to flash that in CWM but id didn't work either (probably because it was not signed). So I tried to extract the system.img and radio.img and pack it again in a new zip and sign it myself - didn't work either. Kinda stuck now. Help from someone familiar with packing ROMs would be highly appreciated. I can't be the only one trying to debrand my phone .

Hi Andrew SM
I too have been able to adb reboot into bootloader but can't understand why power + vol down just reboots the phone and not go into bootloader as it should ?
Is it the case that it is rebooting straight into recovery mode when I do power + vol down and then just boots ? - what should I normally expect to see when I boot into recovery mode ?

I don't think it is recovery - you would se a black screen with a phone icon in the midddle of it with stock recovery.
But I was able to get to bootloader with VOL DOWN + POWER finally after unlocking bootloader via htcdev.com (bootloader screen starts showing *** TAMPERED *** on the top, but that is normal). And you have to disable Fast boot in Settings -> Power of course.
Good luck!

Little late to the party, but I've found the best way to get into boot loader wiht any consistency is to hold the volume down and power button for five seconds or so, then let go of the power button (while holding volume down), then tapping the power button. Boot loader should pop up
Hope this helps!

I cannot enter the bootloader too, so I have follow your instruction and now I can enter inside bootloader. I was wondering why this was necessary.
Anyway I just have the massage : locked and NOT the TAMPERED advice.
Anyway I will wait to unlock my one s, I wanna see if a different unlock way from htcdev cames out because I do not wannt risk that the warranty could be void. Have anyone tried this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1578908 ?
Thanks a lot for this trick! This works immediatly!

2. hold the volume down button ( until boot menu open )
3. press power button for about 2-3 seconds then let go

thanks, i never had to use adb with my captivate or infuse so i figured i would ask .
also for some reason sometimes volume down +power wont work to get me into the bootloader.
I use Quickboot...it has many reboot options, including reboot into Bootloader and Reboot into Recovery.
Another simple way is to pick restart from the power menu then just hold volume down as the phone restarts.

You have to hold volume down the entire time until it gets to the bootloader. On the Captivate you could release it as soon as the splash screen came up but on this HOX you have to continue holding.

If the phone is powered off when you want to go into bootloader, you have to make sure "Fast boot" in Settings>Power is unchecked.
Going into bootloader using power+vol down requries the phone to be fully powered off or a reboot. Fast boot is actually just a deep sleep mode and not a full power down.

That method never seems to work for me. Holding the vol down immediately after selecting restart, or even holding the vol down while picking restart, it just boots normally.
I have to power down (with fast boot unselected in Settings>Power) then hold vol down while pressing power button, in order to get to bootloader.

I am trying to boot my samsung captivate into the boot loader. I've tried the physical key combos mentioned in this thread and there not working.
I tried using ./adb reboot bootloader but the phone does a regular reboot.
I am able to get a splash screen with that says "Download" and has a picture of the Android shoveling, by pressing both volumes and plugin in the power.
But if i do this, the device is not visible when I used ./adb devices
The question is how can i get this to reboot into the bootloader preferably from the terminal so that I can unlock it and install CWM.
Any advice would be much appreciated!

This forum is specific to the HTC One X/XL. You need to go to the forum specific to the Samsung Captivate. The key sequence is likely different, and getting advice from people with a different device can quite possibly lead get you the incorrect info.

Quick question: I'm trying to reboot my android STB in bootloader mode to check its lock/unlock status... Obviously I can't use the Vol Down + Power button in a STB...
So I tried "adb reboot bootloader", which didin't seem to work. I mean, it powered down, then powered up in a screen with the brand's logo, but nothing else happened, and the command "fastboot devices" didn't find any device either (while before that, "adb devices" showed the device normally). Also, I didn't get any unrecognized devices under Device manager which would denote that a new "device" got connected into the system...
I then tried "adb reboot recovery" which works fine...
So what does this situation mean for my STB?

[Q] HTC sensation can't enter recovery mode/ HBoot

Hi,

I am not able to reach Recovery screen / HBOOT screen again. I tried Volume down + Power button, its not working ( maybe my vol key is bad ). Also, phone is not getting recognised by computer through USB cable to run commands from there.
Any suggestions as to what i should do next ??

you can connect your HTC phone to your computer via USB cable, and use the command below, before that you need to install adb shell on Windows.
adb reboot bootloader
Also, you could enter Recovery mode through ROM Toolbox and if you're using TWRP, its touch, so you dont need hardware keys.

There is a way to get into the recovery in such a situation but that usually relies on the hardware buttons. What device do you have? What recovery?

Follow these fool-proof steps:
Locate your android sdk folders-> navigate to the folder where adb is located ->hold shift + right click on the folder containing adb and select ''open command window here'' ( this will automatically take care of pointing the directory to that location) -> 'adb reboot recovery' ENTER
This will automatically enter recovery. I suggest you restore your old backup .
As for your volume buttons, you should be able to fix it easily if you know a little bit of soldering and know-how.

I have htc desire hd and my volume buttons is broken ,my phone is much dispute and have lots of bugs i want to HARD RESET no factory reset only hard reset with rebote. Please help me how to reset my HTC DHD without volume buttons!!
!!sorry for my english!!
SOLVED! (At least for me)
To whom may still be interested, I found a way to get into recovery and subsequently wipe data/factory reset the HTC Inspire 4G/Desire HD without using the volume buttons.
Phone background: the phone that I used had the internal volume buttons broken. It was rooted and unlocked using the effen hack kit, then I flashed a custom ROM on it and I forgot to do a factory reset before I firstly boot up the phone with the new ROM. So it was stuck on the boot animation forever.
Steps for getting into recovery mode without volume buttons:
1. Take the battery off
2. Plug the phone to a wall charger for at least one or two minutes.
3. Put the battery back on along with the battery door and don't touch any buttons.
- The orange led on the front will light up and stay on for a few seconds before the phone automattically gets into recovery
Note: use the touch capacitive buttons to manipulate recovery:
- Home/Menu buttons to navigate up/down
- Back button to go back
- Search button to select
That's pretty much it. At this point you can do anything!
I hope this can help someone out there... If it helped you please hit the thanks button!

You can use adb commands to enter in recovery mode. Connect your android to PC. Enable adb debugging and open command prompt in PC.
Type "adb devices" without qoutes and enter then type "adb reboot recovery" and enter. These commands boot your android in recovery mode.

[Q] HOX stuck in bootloop with no access to bootloader

Ok.. I'm about to lose hope, please any creative ideas will be much appreciated..
I think i did a big mistake trying to update to the latest nightly release of CM 10.2 using the auto-update feature of cm 10.1...
The end result is a bootloop, gets up to the CM rotating animation for a few seconds and reboots.
on top of that:
unable to get into bootloader using pwr+vol up nor vol down
unable to access device using adb nor fastboot - shows no device connected
the PC does not recognize the device though there are drivers installed, the charging LED lights up but no PC activity
all of the solutions i've seen assume either the recover/bootloader is available or the phone is accessed via fastboot/adb.
in this case neither are correct....
for some time i wanted to upgrade to htc one but not yet....
please help
Press and hold power until the phone shuts off.
Then let go of power and press and hold volume down until bootloader comes up.

tried it again several time, but as I said it doesn't work.
I get a black screen (not the CM animation) and than reboot all over again.
You could try letting it drain completely. Then charge a bit and try again.
Is your phone plugged in while your trying? My phone will not enter bootloader while its plugged in.

You are mostly likely not performing the button combo correctly. If there were no bootloader (hboot), the screen would not be coming on at all. Not getting into bootloader is almost always a case of not doing the button combo correctly. The one possible exception, is if your volume rocker has failed (and simply not registering the vol down being pressed).
Make sure you hold vol down, and do not let go until the while bootloader screen comes up.
Recovery is a different story, as you can indeed not have recovery installed, and the phone will still function. But hboot and recovery are 2 different things.

I wish it was the case,
when i try to go into hboot the device instead of going into another boot until animation cycle, goes into black screen boot cycle. which means most likely that the action (PWR+Vol) does have an effect otherwise it would have continued to go into same boot cycle through the CM animation..
besides there is a recovery installed, or at least was...
is there anyway to re-install the hboot part without the hboot/fastboot availability?
