Hi,
I know it's a too general and broad question, but I was hoping to get some clues or facts. Googling wasn't exactly fruitful with keywords like these.
I'm thinking of a project at my uni, and I kinda need to know would an average andriod phone be able to charge other devices via its USB port? Of course, if the answer isn't affirmative in general, maybe I could get some tips as to how could I find out which specific android smartphones are?
In any case, thanks for you time.
Cheers!

I'd also like to know. I'd like to power a secondary low-power (OLED) display, with data coming from the phone as well. Can it power an arduino?
Yes. Sometimes I charge my HTC one x+ using my nexus 7.
I use an OTG Cable (USB ON THE GO). I put the OTG cable on my nexus and connect my phone to it to charge it.
Please press the thanks button if I helped!

I agree, if not their is a definite developing market for someone, i suppose the device drivers would probably be the limiting factor on developing something like this, between that and the fact there is quite a few operating systems around depending on your phone
Yeah it needs to be able to use the usb as a host which I understand my device can.

interested too but unfortunately seems that's not possible.. have asked this question too some time ago
I was searching the internet, for a while to find out the way to somehow add a external flash to our fit, and ended up to a post, which was about a device called "iFlash". It is a external hardware device for iPhone users only which adds a extra flash to there device.
So I was wondering, can this be made to work on on a android phone, or are there any alternatives !!
I recon that you could get an old microusb lead, chomp and strip the outer insulation. Use a multimeter to find which is power (I think the positive is red and negative is white on most USB cables). Wire up the positive connection of a LED to the negative of the USB lead, then negative to positive. Plug in and it should work!

nice info. want to know more about this.
if this works for my device then i am surely getting it.
Aspire [lomash] where are you we need your expert view about this.
@sid
you could try PhonePhlash.
I don't know whether it's available in India or not, but the pics shown do look good...
@Nathan
I don't think Fit's microUSB port has any power output.
So we need to use an external power supply like Lithium Button Cells or AA Batteries
(but they would look plain ugly)
@amandeep
i'm no expert lol... i just try my best to find the answers to your problems...

before i'm buying this phone,does htc one s support usb otg ?
it's really big deal for me when it doesn't support
It looks like that you need a adaptor with external power support.
I also looked for a while and I wasn't able to find another solution. Maybe there will be a root-way soon

You probably meant that link:

It works alright
I have the phone ages and only thought to try recently.
This is the first thread that pops up for me on Google, so I'll answer it for anyone wondering.
I have a cheap ebay adaptor a day and it reads and writes just fine
It seems to be hit and miss, I can't get it to work reliably no matter what I try, different adaptors, different usb sticks (there's definitely more of a problem with some sticks), different otg helper apps.
I have an adaptor on order which also has a power in socket, maybe that will work.
I have a slightly odd list of needs from an android tab and was wondering if the tf700 will meet them;
line in recording of audio
usb for cat5 adapter https://sites.google.com/site/bobjgear/USB-Aapter
optionof decent keyboard dock
rootable
decent screen and manufactor rom updates
im interested in the cat5 especially as i cant use wifi at work, sadly so my options are limited...
thanks for your help and feedback, hows this tab without the keyboard?
cheers, andy

Why not use one of these? I use it all the time when I'm in hotels that don't have wireless.

The screen is matched only by the Retina display. Best Android screen on the market. We've had 4 or 5 updates so far, including JB as one of the first non-Google companies.

I have some friends that work for the government and their in the same boat as you. They aren't even allowed to use wireless when their traveling and it's available.
Thanks for this, sounds good. Only thing left to work out is line in then i guess, if someone could test this for me it would be really helpful. Its the last piece of the puzzle i think.
One other question, i take it the only "pairing" the tablet does with the keyboard is just being plugged in? The reason i ask is that if i buy a couple of tablets and keyboards (me and the mrs) can we just swap the keyboards round without any pairing faff?

As far as I know, you can interchange the docks. There's a driver for it installed in Android from the start. There's no personalized settings or anything stored in the dock itself. Plug and Play.

If you are located outside the US in Europe this would be your answer.
If you're a US user then your stuck with the complex USB adapter scenario it seems.
perfect, that actually looks just what im after, simple easy and with cat5 in built. shame it doesnt have line in then it really would be ideal!
edit: just need to find someone that will actually supply it to me now!
Hi,
I broke the screen on my Nexus 5 while on a long holiday. I can still see about three quarters of the screen but the touch screen is basically busted, and as a result, I can't unlock the phone to get the data off. I backed up 90% of the photos via Dropbox but there is one week of photos I couldn't upload and there are also some really nice videos I'd like to get off.
Is there any way to sync to the file system without unlocking via the touchscreen? I don't think I have debugging disabled (I'm not particularly development savvy) so not sure what my options are...
I have a little time before I need to send the phone to LG for repair, so I'm willing to learn whatever I need to to salvage my phone. I think I saw a thread somewhere detailing how it's down for the nexus 4 but not sure if it's applicable to the 5 as well...
Thanks
The important question is your bootloader unlocked? If it is you have options

I don't think it is as I didn't make any modifications to my phone, just used it with the standard features.
Is it possible to unlock the bootloader now, with the screen being broken?

Unlocking the bootloader wipes data.
Plug a USB mouse and keyboard in.

Thanks, that's a pretty good idea! I'm looking at OTG USB cables now but I do have one question, will I need drivers in order to use the USB mouse, or will it work as soon as I plug it in? I read somewhere that if you have the latest Android software then the USB devices should be recognised without a problem, however, my phone has been out of action for a couple of months now so my software may be out of date...

By latest, I don't think they specifically mean the newest ROM for the nexus 5. Probably just mean 4 or 4.2+
As mentioned, no drivers needed. Just plug and play.

Perfect! Micro OTG USB ordered. Just one more question, why do I need a mouse and keyboard? Shouldn't a USB mouse be enough to enter the pin and navigate the menus?
Thanks so much for the help guys
