Storage space for apps - HTC One S

Hello!
So im planning to buy this phone, but there's one problem. I've heard that you only get 2gb of space for the apps. So that left me wondering, is that 2gb of storage only for like apks or for app caches too? Like for example will I be able to install GTA 3, GTA VC and NOVA and Most Wanted all in the same time? They all weigh like 1gb, so that means I can install maybe like 1 or 2 of those games, and that's it? Or the caches of those games go to the rest of the 10gb of storage and I can install them all?
This is the only problem with the phone for me.. I want to be able to install a lot of apps and games, will I be able to do it, without rooting?

Nah the apps themselves (which are 3~4MB) go to app storage and the 1GB game data goes to sdcard0/Android/data so you can install as many as you want at the same time to fit it into 10GB I'd recommend Modern Combat 4 as well if you like NOVA.
EDIT: This does NOT require root either, I had several large games installed on stock.

Hmm, but there is no sd card on One S. So I suppose the rest of the 10gb internal storage serves as an inbuilt sd card, yes? if so then that's great! Thanks!

Does everybody move their apps from the phone to usb storage? (because more space)

Just wondering if anybody does this to free up more phone memory so it runs smoother. I have already moved as many apps to usb storage as possible...Are there any negatives to doing this?
Thanks so much!
The only bad thing is that they take longer to load after boot. There shouldnt be any performance difference since youre not moving them to a sd card as other devices.

My personal rule is : move games on SD, leave apps on internal space. Have plenty of space though, so it doesnt matter.
In CWM 5.0.2.0 you can partition parts of USB storage for apps and games and I've set 1gb aside for it Don't know if this affects speed or anything but I just thought it would be good to have that space there

Is this true? ICS does not support Move Apps to SD Card?

I have just bought an ASUS TF300 and apps can't be moved. Reading online, people say its because ICS doesn't allow it - so what happens when the DS gets ICS?
Not true. Search the net. For example:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/htc-vivid/163799-apps-sd-ics.html
And even if it was true - with 1.1GB of internal memory, why would anyone care? And why would anyone want to move the apps to SD even now?
At least in the versions i tried, there is no switch to allow it/do it automatically, but in the memory -settings there is a utility that 1 clean the cache, 2 move apps 2 sd/remove apps, and 3 remove older messages.
Seen and used on ice cream saga and ice-ds

Save space for what? For having unused internal space and having your apps load much slower and experiencing multiple bugs when mounting/unmounting SD card, like "disappearing" apps?
Having lots of empty (wasted) internal space, taking unnecessary space from SD card and making the system work worse than it can is a great and smart idea, right? Or maybe not. Just like having zillion MB of free RAM. What can you do with free RAM? You can't eat it, it doesn't generate money, and it doesn't do anything useful - just sits there, eating phone's electrical charge and not working. Or, in other word, being wasted.

Perhaps I am ignorant, but I understood the more free RAM the better, eg the faster. Not so?
It appears from the replies that there are clunky work arounds, but in essence, yes, in ICS there is no Apps to SD. I better hope I have less than 1GB of Apps then

This you understood wrong. Free ram is wasted ram.
And for apps2sd, of course it works in ICS. Some apps do that even without asking so I have to move them manually back to internal mem.

This is one of the most annoying things about apps2sd, in Gingerbread also. Even if I force the apps by setting pmInstallLocation to internal, those of them defined by their creator in Manifest as "prefer to SD" won't obey - and each update I have to move them back to internal. Very annoying.
The question is simple and the answer is simple too.
Apps in SD, running slow and buggy and after reboot, it might missing sometimes. The only advantage are, it saves internal storage and no need to install apps after reset. Correct me If I'm wrong.
Now close this thread for good.

Yes, at wildfire, desire and such devices, because they had pretty small internal storage that got filled pretty fast. The ds has enough internal storage and if you're not using at least a class 6 sd it will slow the moved apps down, so my advice stay with internal you won't ever fill it except you install about 300 - 500 apps (depending how much games are included not using the sd).

I disagree; with many games now coming with 1.5gb of data needed this question is entirely relevant.
In fact on ics the move to sd function is disabled. Can provide a ss if needed. Samsung and a few other manufacturers have also confirmed this.
Just my 2pence.
very good job answering the OP's question all. games and apps nowadays are using around 50MB by default (i'm looking at you chrome, grabatron, and google play music), sometimes with additional space being used for on-device caching. at that rate, even with 2GB on-device storage, 20-40 solid modern apps could eat that up in no time, and i know that there are apps out there that take up more space than normal (webster's dictionary (300MB), friggin' MYST (700MB), etc). whats worse, google lifted the market restriction for apps all the way up to 4GB earlier this year. go ahead and try to imagine a 4GB app on 2GB of internal storage.
once you fill up internal storage, your phone will stop doing the things you like it to do, like download text messages, sync email, and keep apps up to date. apps on SD is a real need for some persons. apps2sd or link2sd are good options for apps that you don't use frequently or that don't require extreme speed to complete (like titanium backup, which runs on a schedule once a week in the middle of the night; i really don't care how long it takes to load).
and now the bad news. on some (perhaps most) ics devices (like the optimus 4x and galaxy s3), the ability to move apps to SD is just completely gone. any sd card app mover you install will tell you this and will refuse to do anything. this is because the ROM is configured to use the SD card as secondary storage (it's mounted at /mnt/sdcard/external_sd instead of /mnt/sdcard, and also perhaps formatted differently?).
grain of salt time. my phone has 1.4GB internal storage free. at what point do i start getting worried and consider moving apps to SD? i'd say 100MB is a good time to think about alternative storage, or cleaning out old apps. but, that's just me. i'm not a huge storage user, but do consider the possibility that someone will want that feature.

The ROM developers kind of aim at featuring the latest and best aspects the phone has to offer.
So if there is an update on the stock ROM that introduces some fixes or features which are worth implementing they usually do so ASAP.

Yeah, but you still need to root (and mess with triangle away and unrooting in case you need warranty), use foldermount and I'm pretty sure not every single app will work just fine or error free, Google offline maps and music still can't be moved, still too much hassle. Now Samsung should release the 32gb version. I don't get it what's so hard to do it. They win more money releasing the 32gb version.
LE: Oh..yeah...I forget....using foldermount it's still showing that the data is on your phone, even if you move it, right ? If you have 4GB on sd-card will say that you have those 4GB in internal memory (so you can still get warning for low memory even if it's not true. That would be very annoying.

Wrong. Folder mount move the app data to the SD card and the memory informations are correct.
It is very useful for large games. I have 5gb games data and still more than 5gb internal memory.
Of course same system or special app propably don't work with folder mount.

This doesnt work right? But Move to SD card button doesnt work if you dont have external sd card inside.
I have no idea how this function works. Application size reduces then move to SD card application, but then those files didnt really moved to external sd card.
But if you remove sd card after that, app wont run. WTF..
Did you even try to delete application data after moving and re-download it?
For example with Asphalt or Real Racing....
I'm curious to know were game data are going to store....
Thank you

I really need confirmation for that. One month ago everybody was saying that the apps looks like its installed on the internal memory even if it's moved on the sd card. Just stick an SD card in and use that for the compatible ones. Most big apps like games and things will happily sit on SD and download their additional data to it. If you get a nice speedy class (6 or above) you'll have no problem.

No they dont. Its a real problem. Sony dont do one phone that has more than 16GB in Europe. Although the old short lived xperia T did.

I own Xperia TX and still use it.... Never has Sony done more than 16GB except for some special case imports.... the phone will be out of date by the time you can get your hands on one... worse than that is Android not allowing you to switch anything you like onto SDCard.. Its bad enough that they reserve X GB for system and not allow non critical apps to be completely stored on SDCard.

Sigh. If you don't want to root then don't. There's loads of apps you can't use if unrooted and I for one wouldn't dream of using a banking app on an insecure, unencrypted mobile device that is prone to be lost or stolen.
I was pointing the way to a mod that helps to save large amounts of space on internal storage. No matter how much internal storage you have, it will always free up some. It's not a replacement for larger internal storage, but a utility that performs a specific and useful function. If you don't want to use it, maybe others reading this thread might want to give it a spin.

Oculus apps to sdcard

Is there a way to move oculus apps to sdcard? I've just started using this thing and only 14.81 Gb is left . Reminds me Htc desire times, when we had ~140 mb of internal storage.. Well apps on those days were 100 kb - 2 mb in size Now oculus eats gazillions bytes of precious internal storage.
I skimmed few articles about adoptive storage, but as far as I understand Samsung throwed this away
I thought you could move most apps to SD card, have you tried?
If it cannot move the Oculus apps to SD, then VR is going to flop. As 32 GB (24GB actually) is really insufficient to hold regular + VR apps.

The phone should have come with 64GB option really. The SD card, even the Samsung Evo Pro+ is slow. Actually, the internal memory controler for the SD card is half the speed of what the Pro+ supports on a PC. Sad really, and it's such a sweet phone. What a shame!

To use the adaptable storage method you need at least a U3 card. I was about to buy one when I came across this app on google play:
Link2SD allows you to move Gear VR apps to external storage. I have moved 3 successfully and have not encounter a problem. There is a plus version which allows you to link after moving but I'm loving the free version so far!
