[Q] Action Launcher malware-like behavior on Pacman rom - General Questions and Answers

Hi guys, not sure if this post belongs here or in the developers section but I recently ran into major problem using Action Launcher and since it seems to be growing in popularity I thought I should post what I found and see if anyone else if experiencing this as well. I'm running the latest stable build of Pacman rom and I installed Action Launcher but it had too many bugs to be a daily driver so I decided to uninstall it, which is where I ran into my problem. Once Action Launcher is installed, it does not allow itself to be uninstalled. The uninstall button becomes completely grayed out. I either have to use Titanium or uninstall through the Play store, which is very weird for a user installed app. I tried contacting the developer but there was no help there. This is very strange. I installed in multiple times just to check and even re-flashed my rom and it still becomes uninstallable upon being installed. I've tried every launcher I've ever bought and none of them exhibit this behaviour.
Can anyone else confirm that this is happening? I posted on the developer's google+ forum and at least one other person is experiencing this but I would love to find out if this is a wide spread problem. Also, it is not installed as system app, since someone already asked me that and all the defaults are cleared so it's not even listed as the default launcher. It's all very weird and I don't know if this is on the end of the rom or the app. Can someone help with a possible explanation or answer?

I would suggest removing the apk manually from the system.
Hope it helped

What does the app do that requires it to call phone numbers directly? This could be a red flag as a lot of malware today consists of bad apps calling premium numbers for direct monetary gain.

You know I never really looked at launcher permissions closely enough considering how widely in use they are by the android community, I'm just assuming these are basic permissions every launcher requests. The permissions themselves don't bother me. I'm sure the call numbers directly permission is there because the app allows you to add and call contacts directly from a folder/cover.
I'm more curious about why the app becomes uninstallable after being installed. It's just a behaviour I've never noticed from any other app I've downloaded from the Play store. I would love to be able to explain it but the developer is pretty lax about getting back in touch with people so I thought I would pose the question to the xda community.

No, the app is uninstallable from the Play store and even using third party apps but for some reason not through the system ui, at least not with Pacman rom and I'm pretty sure that shouldn't be the case. I just want to know if other people have experienced something similar, using Pacman or any other rom.

What he meant was since you have rooted the phone, you can use a file manager to directly remove the apk from the /data folder, hence removing the problem for you.
Also, the app could become uninstallable for several reasons (ROM compatibility issues, version issues, or a specific feature designed to prevent deletion). I would not immediately suspect malware though, as malware would also be coded to not appear in the apps dashboard in the first place, so that you would not be aware of it, unless it was a bad app pretending to be something else (games, etc.)

I understood what he meant, my "no" was just to let him know that wasn't the issue though I could see how that would be confusing since it also directly answers his question. It's not a problem, I know how to remove the app and using a file manager isn't even necessary since as I said titanium removes it as does simply uninstalling from the Play store. As I said, I've installed and uninstalled it multiple times just to see if it was a glitch. How to uninstall it isn't the issue, why it becomes uninstallable is.
Also, I said malware-like behavior. I didn't say it was malware and I even stated above that none of it's permissions seem suspect to me. That was never the question. This is honest curiosity about why the rom and this app in particular seem to be reacting in this way. It's not a slight to the app or it's developer. When something doesn't work as expected sometimes there's a a genuine interest in finding out how and why. I don't even use the app, I bought it to try because I've heard so many good things but it wasn't my cup of tea. I was just curious why no one else has reported this possible bug. Maybe the "why?" has already been answered but I just can't find the reason, hence my post. I suppose I asked this in the wrong section since I'm not seeking technical help.

[Q] Restricting Specific Apps From Running, Period.

Is there a way to prevent specific apps from running at all, ever? I have a Samsung Captivate and I have several apps that are open in the background upon boot-up and at other random times. Now I know that this is fine normally on the Android OS, but I do not use these apps EVER as I have better alternatives from the Market.
They are the built in TouchWiz versions of
E-Mail (I use the GMail app instead)
Music Player (I use DoubleTwist instead)
Video Player (I use RockPlayer instead)
Messaging (I use Google Voice instead).
Since I absolutely never use these apps, and even have them hidden from my application list in LauncherPro, I would love to disable them from ever running again. Unfortunately I cannot uninstall them as doing so apparently causes instability with the built in Samsung TouchWiz UI.
As a side note, I know this is concerning a specific phone to a degree, but I think it's more fitting as a general Android OS question. If not, mods please move it to the Captivate Q&A section.
Uninstall them. That is, if you're phone is rooted. If it isn't, probably not a whole lot of easy fixes.
Just search XDA for uninstalling apps on/from system. There are several threads floating around on the subject.

Some of the stock Samsung apps can be safely uninstalled. The ones I listed cannot be. That's why I'm trying to find a solution to prevent them from running.

have you tried looking for SGS tools on the market. I have used it to get rid of a bunch of apps that were stock. I dont think these will brick your phone if you get rid of the apps you discussed but you might want to do a back up just in case. The phone defenitely has to be rroted for this though
Try autostarts. Cheap paid app for what you are looking for.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
i don't know anything about your platform, but I can tell you there is little difference between uninstalling, and preventing an app from being triggered by an event. Auto starts will do just that stop event / semaphore queues from accessing the resources it needs. Your requesting app will spin ( wait in queue ). You can how ever judiciously use autostarts to prevent activation by specific events ( of those apps which you don't like) which may be acceptable to the operation of those requesting apps ( the ones which cause the instability you mentioned). Trial and error. But autostarts is kind, it keeps the name of the semaphore which you blocked with a line through it ( so you can undo ). Just saying..

How to detach an app from the Play Store

Right, I'm a PowerAMP pro user, but with a pretty old phone. The latest app is working but it's slow and sometimes lags. The poweramp site also offers the old 1.4 version which works right for me. Now, all is fine and dandy but I;m a bit annoyed by the app always showing up there to be updated. So I searched for a method to detach the app from the market and learnt that the bug has been solved long ago and apps can't be detached. So I tried changing the app's signature, of course with no luck, my android dev skills being close to absolute zero.
So I ask you, is there any way to do this? I am not pirating the app, so don't worry
I'm also trying to convince the developer to make an unsigned version of the app specifically for old timers like me, but with no success until now..
Just use LBE Privacy guard and freeze internet connection permission for this particular app..
So it will not connect to net and not telling you that new version is available..
we all should be polite enough to press thanks for anyone who helped US.

If it doesnt need to connect to the internet for anything else you could use droidwall to block it from accessing the playstore
If your rooted you could use blackmart to download the app and never have to update it
Or see the updates notifications saying there's an update

I know Titanium Backup can detach apps, though I am not sure if it is available in the free version. However, I do recommend the paid version of Titanium Backup anyway.

On a related note, is there a way to remove apps from the "My Apps"list? It is really annoying to have to scroll through a list of apps containing tons of apps that you may have tried for a while and then uninstalled when you need to reinstall something. And why is the "My Apps" list in random order and not alphabetical?

As far as I know (and after some quick Googling), there is no way to remove any apps from the giant "My Apps" list. However, I use the Appbrain android market replacement, and it lets you customize your lists and sort them better. You can remove devices from view though.

(Potential) Malware found on Elephone S3 right out of box?

Hi guys
I recently purchased a Elephone S3 from Everbuying.com. I heard people talking about how notorious these Chinese phones are having malware installed on them, so I decided to give the malware check a go and use about 10+ popular Malware detection apps (Avast, Kaspersky, Avira, Trojan Killer, you name it) currently available on Play Store.
Out of all those, excluding warnings that doesn't really matter in this regards (Malware specific), the below two apps gave me those respective warning results.
I have done some research, but i don't think I found any relevant info in this regards. So, for all the guru out there, the question is obvious, should I be worried about these "non-deletable" apps (if not rooted)? If they ARE malicious, can I be worried free by turning off ALL permissions for the apps and in some case, disable the app (I can disable the Beauty Center, not ELE Launcher).
Thanks to you all for any input!

go ahead and disable Beauty Center, as far as ELE Launcher, that seems legit. But if you don't like it, just replace it with something like Nova Launcher.

Hi mattzeller, thanks heaps for the info! This might not be a good question, but just for my information, generally speaking, is there a way to distinguish between a real harmful malware (actively stealing personal info) and an app that has more access and integration to the phone's OS than others by looking at the information provided? In other words, is there any obvious give away sign?
Thanks again for the help!

Well look at reviews of the app, see if it is installing other apps without your consent, or constantly nagging you to download other apps. Generally 99.99% of apps on Google play are safe. Occasionally some crapware gets on there, but if you take a look at its rating and reviews (not just the highlights) you should be good.

Always check the apps permissions. I absolutely refuse to install an app that has permissions that it shouldn't be using. However, if the app you're about to download needs permissions related to the app features, that's OK with me.
I see so many Play Store apps that are just total spyware in my book. Flashlight apps are a good example of this. There is zero reasons a flashlight app needs to read my contacts or a data connection. Just be mindful of reviews and permissions and you'll be OK.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, I am aware that common source/cause of malwares are side load apps and rooted device. So I am always fairly cautious about any apps i installed via non-play store source. However, these two caught apk are installed right out of box. That kinda annoys me. I don't jump on the bandwagon and say Chinese phones are infested with malwares and I believe a lot of the time people just over exaggerate and blow some minority out of proportion.
However, the truth is, this is the first Chinese phone I got and it came with two identified malwares. To be fair, it might not be particularly malicious, but it's enough to make me have second thought about my purchase....

Yap, what I did for those two apps I mentioned are turning off all permissions access to them, disable app for the one I can and turn off background data access. Hopefully it will freeze them for good and stop them from playing naughty.
Just a question though, say I do all those above (e.g. switching off permission, force stopped etc), technically speaking, can a malware still be "active and do what they "meant" to do"? I meant after all, they are meant to do something "out of control" right?

No, if you revoke the permission to view your contacts, it is the system that is blocking the apps ability to view your contacts.
Though I think you are being a little paranoid.
Everyone freaks out out all the permissions apps require, when the app actually never uses most of the permissions it asks for, at least not in the way you think. You wouldn't think the launcher needs permissions to access your contacts, but it does. How else is it going to allow you to make a call, or display an incoming all, or missed call/text badges.
I mean take a look at the litany of permissions Nova Launcher and TeslaUnread require, yet we all know the app is not malware. As long as you install from legitimate sources, you will be fine. Like I said in my first post, disable the Beauty app, the other is the Launcher. If you don't like it, install a different one.

Unfortunately the way things are with the permissive Android system, we have to be a little paranoid. The built in system apps like launchers and permissions can't be disabled easily unless the user is technical enough to know about rooting using apps like xposed/xprivacy.

[Nougat] What is "zdemo" app? Could it be malware?

Hi Everyone,
Long time no see, but I'm back with a quick question: I've noticed an unknown (to me) application on my Leagoo T5c running Android 7.0 called "zdemo".
It doesn't appear in my app drawer (I use a launcher called Rootless Pixel that I like a lot, because it's extremely light and easy on the eye), only in the Application list in Parameters, and I've uninstalled it, but I suspect it could have been malware, because all of a sudden, I've started to get unwanted popups in a few application, Blue Mail among them, so I suspect it could come back.
Do any of you know of this app? I Googled it and got nowhere.
It happens to me too. I have another one named media provider or something like that, it has a fake Android logo and it can be desistaled.
Yeah, I managed to uninstall it... Twice, which means it's coming back at more or less regular intervals. I suspect it's a malware, but MalwareBytes didn't find anything wrong on my phone, so I'm a bit stumped.
I suspect those malware were bundled with Rootless Pixel Launcher, because since I've uninstalled it, they're gone and haven't returned...
Zdemo appears in conjunction with System Input Method. I think the former is a trojan and the latter adware. I keep stopping and uninstalling the apps just to have them return. I think the gallery app is the culprit but haven't figured out how to clean it yet because its a system file.
Hi Donna,
Do you own a Leagoo phone too? I've had issues with rotten ROM from that brand before, but I thought that was a thing of the past.
If the Gallery app is indeed the culprit, then there must be a bad picture or video in it that you imported, maybe a cover from a music album you downloaded?
I for one know that all the music on my phone doesn't come from CDs I ripped...
The funny thing is, before I installed those two launchers I mentioned, I had no issues whatsoever. The Rootless Pixel Launcher contacted me via Play Store and defended himself from injecting any bad code into his launcher, and says that CPL Launcher is based on his own Rootless Pixel launcher, so it could be that the repository where the APK is stored has been compromised, and the malware is added to the files before it's made available to the Google Play store, but I can't be sure.
For reasons unknown, my first reply got lost somewhere, and I don't feel like rewriting it word for word. Do you have a Leagoo phone too? If so, which ROM do you have installed on it (mine was released in March 2018)?
I suspect those two malware come bundled with the launchers I mentioned, but the dev for Rootless Pixel launcher assured me his code is clean, and I tend to believe him. I think the repo where his code is stored could have been hacked, but I have no way to prove it, of course.
EDIT: my first reply finally made it to the thread. Sorry for the double post...
UPDATE: I finally did a factory reset, reinstalled all my apps (minus a couple I never used anyway) from the Play Store, put my music back on the device (not my pictures though, because I want to sieve through them first), installed Rootless Pixel Launcher again, and so far, so good, no malware in the applications list.
I'll give it a day or two, just to be on the safe side, then I'll modify my incendiary comment on the Play Store about Rootless Pixel Launcher...
Somebody created this code to bug people, had probably nothing to do uses your ip to track and install his popup window.
If I disconnect my wifi and use my phone without an internet connection zdemo and system input method don't come back. I should try on another wifi or in another country. Wonder if it could be tracked and maybe interesting to see where it leads. Could it be stashed on google play store? It seems curious that there is little info on the web about this problem as if somebody in a key position really f...-up
Yeah, I too find it hard to believe that those two malware aren't better documented on the Web. However, if you scan your device with MalwareBytes and look up the entire name of both, you find ***partial*** references, stating that they aren't "real" malware, just PUPs, which I find intriguing too.
On my phone, I've noted unwanted popups that were hard to close when they were installed, but nothing untoward once I got rid of them, so they're definitely adware, either separately, or working jointly, I don't know.

Anyone have calls dropped using Nova Launcher?

I've reset to factory settings on my Moto G6 because Verizon customer support said some of my apps could be causing my calls to drop intermittently. I also had my Nova Launcher installed which I love, but had never used before this phone. I also had ads coming up when "waking" the phone and suspect some of the apps I had on there were contributing to them.
It's Nova Launcher I would like feedback on as I want to use that on my phone, but not if others are having calls drop because of it. Any feedback welcome. I also had one of Androidslooks themes on there for Nova called Toony. I ran the apk files for that through the NVISO appscan site with no issues showing.
Again, any feedback welcome, and thank you in advance More phone info below:
Moto G6 V 8.0.0
The Verizon rep you talked to was stupid. I have never heard of an app having anything to do with dropped calls. The ads you have popping up are probably from a malicious app you've installed along the line. Some of those can inject ads in other apps making the rogue app hard to pinpoint. It's certainly not Nova though. I've been using it since it was released way back in the day and never had a single issue. The developer is highly trusted in the Android community.

The Verizon rep didn't say Nova Launcher was the cause, he said the same thing you did basically, that some apps can cause issues. I was the one asking you or someone, if the Nova Launcher could cause issues like I was having.
I'm going to go ahead and put it back on, and would like to use the apk files again that I tested on NVISO. Do you have any thoughts on that site, NVISO? Or maybe a better one, in your opinion, to test apks? As for any other apps, I've just re-installed my Messenger for facebook.
I never have an issue when making calls outside my apartment, I mean when I'm out and about. So I suspect it isn't anything I had on my phone. I not "app happy" so I don't install any extras except what I mentioned
