[Q] Android sucking up my data, please help! - General Questions and Answers

So I recently got my first contract, T-Mobile, 1000MB internet, 90 call minutes and 2500 texts, so in the first two days I already used up 100 of 1000MB, 35MB by me and the rest by Android (see screenshot), is there anything I can do about it? Please let me know.
Edit: screenshot didn't upload.

When u don't need data turn it off. Also turn off sync with your accounts. U can also set a limit on how much data u use in settings
Press thanks if I've helped!

Wifi will not accumulate any data. Well it will but any data used over wifi will not go towards the 1000mb limit u have. So if ur on wifi turn data off just to be safe.
Hope that helps!

Go to settings. Then go to data usage.
Then click on the top app. Then scroll down to the bottom. Then check the box that says restrict background data. Do this for any apps using data a lot.
If I helped you press thanks!

Try using a 3G on/off widget (so you can toggle 3G easily) and connecting to wifi when available. Also, turn off syncing for apps, and GPS.

I called T-Mobile, I should ignore what Android tells me, I don't have to pay for Twitter, Facebook and Whatsapp and background data doesn't count either.

Wifi question

If i turn on wifi and am connected to my router, does it automatically stop the data plan from running? In other words, when I go on websites or use the facebook ap, is it using my wifi instead of my data plan?
Yep. You can confirm it by noticing that the arrows under «3G» aren't lit.

Thanks. I do notice that the 3G went away. So will I be able to download apps through the android market using the wifi too? This whole limited 2g data plan has gotten me scared hahah. But thanks for the quick reply.

data usage

So i recently checked my account for data usage and im at 10gb of data in about 2 weeks of usage. Could this be a problem for me later. Im waiting for vzw to say that im using too much data.

The thunderbolt has a data usage problem that it incorrectly reads data and Verizon knows about it and are trying to fix it.

I just got my bolt, and in about 3 hrs of use, i have used about 147mb. All I did so far was download 5 apps [about 30megs total] and setup my primary gmail, and thats it. No tether, no streaming.
I wonder what the phone is doing in the background...

IMAP(gmail default) pulls all your emails and folders. When I set up my gmail that's automatically 50mb in email downloads without attachments. Are some of the apps use your data connection for updating? Like backgrounds. What do you have sending?

No I don't have apps for updating. Infact, I used titanium backup to restore all my apps, however, the market updated some of them. All in all, its basically the same apps I had on my Nexus1, as well as my same usage habits. I would peg my voluntary usage at about 230mbs. On my N1, my daily data usage would be between 60-100mbs.
After 24hrs of use with my bolt, Im at 740mb. I have no idea why that big. (My guess is the Sense bloat is doing something, but thats a guess. I removed all the VZ bloat) And about 95mbs of it was during my sleep. (on my n1, that number would be about 8mbs).
goodthing for unlimited data.
After rooting why would anyone worry over data usage?

Hopefully my tbolt and current data package is good for the next ten years so I can be grandfathered into the unlimited data.

WTF??!! INSANE data usage from Voice Alerts app

Whats up guys,
I've been using Voice Alerts for about 1 year now. Its been working fine, with the occasional crash here and there. But past few weeks my battery had been dying really quickly, I didn't really think much of it until I started getting emails from AT&T about my data usage. I'm on the 2gig data plan, and according to my phone, this "voice alerts" app has been eating up my data. So far I've eaten through 4 gigs in about 2 weeks, which is insane because I average about 1 to1.5gigs of data on a "heavy" month. I took a screenshot that says Voice Alerts used 1.5 gigs in 1 week. I've never had this problem before, and this app has no reason to connect to the internet. What would cause this problem? I've emailed the developer and still have not gotten a reply. I've uninstalled it for now. Cost me $20 in additional data overages so far.
link to app in google play here:
EDIT: I cant post outside links yet, but the app is called "voice alerts" by Alex Corbi
Thanks for your help!
Is the data usage the same with ATT? Call #data*
Long shot but worth checking. I can't imagine it would go through that much, perhaps it got stuck re downloading some sort of info. Can't really help much other than that. Basic steps such as reinstall and cache clean for the app are likely your best bet.

I would agree, this is your best bet. Also, this is a perfect example of why everybody should occasionally check their data usage meter, just to keep an eye out for things like this! Unless you're on WiFi basically all the time, it's a good practice to just keep an eye on the data usage meter. Lots of apps out there can sometimes go haywire and cause this type of problem.

Does that turn on all 3 GPSs or just one. Btw what's the difference in the 3.

Assuming this is just because you are on a ROM... just drop the widget where you want it and reboot and the buttons will appear
If you are using Tweakd then the stock widget wont display properly for some reason. On stock it just turns on the Standalone GPS services. You'll need to manually do the VZW and Google service.
then I guess I'm stuck with the phone the way it is. BTW, I thought Tweaked was the only ROM out there for those of us that have the latest OTA. If I am wrong, what are the alternatives?
The GPS toggle in the notification pulldown turns GPS on without the confirmation.

Not the Verizon or Google GPSs.
Just FYI the verizon location service doesn't do anything unless you are using VZ navigator. The google location service is what estimates your location using cell towers and wifi. GPS is the precision location used for satellites.
If you have an app that needs location to work, then see if it needs a rough or exact location. You probably only need to turn one of those on.
I just leave VZW and Google location services on. Yeah maybe they can keep track of my location but their intentions are pretty benign.

Is this possible?

Is it possible to download data (mb) from your WiFi to use as mobile data when your on the go?
Sorry if this doesn't make any sense.

Indeed it doesn't make sense. Simply put it's impossible for the same reason you can't store free calls from your landline to use later with your mobile phone.

What kind of data do you want to load?
Is it maps, music, web-pages?
What do you mean by downloading mb to use while you are on the go?
You can download whatever you want in Wifi and use it on 3G, but you cannot get extra mb in wifi to use in a different connection (If I understood you well...)
