Wifi question - Captivate General

If i turn on wifi and am connected to my router, does it automatically stop the data plan from running? In other words, when I go on websites or use the facebook ap, is it using my wifi instead of my data plan?

Yep. You can confirm it by noticing that the arrows under «3G» aren't lit.

Thanks. I do notice that the 3G went away. So will I be able to download apps through the android market using the wifi too? This whole limited 2g data plan has gotten me scared hahah. But thanks for the quick reply.

Wi-Fi Calling No Longer Counted Against Minutes (According to TM News)

Those without unlimited minutes will take comfort in the fact that T-Mobile will not count wi-fi calling against your minutes starting 5/11:
http://www.tmonews.com/2011/05/t-mobile-bring-unlimited-wifi-calling-back/
This just plain kicks butt!
I bee happy!
Awesome. Man my gf would really benefit that. She constantly goes over her minutes and we have a great wifi connection here.
+1 reason why Tmo rocks
what about international calling?

Anyone got wifi calling? this sounds like a reason to get it back. I should have froze it andnot deleted it..
This is huge in my opinion. Great selling point for those of us in the cellular industry.

Isn't wifi using my bandwidth
I don't understand how t-mobile could count this against your minutes in the 1st place. Are you using their system in any way when you are on a wifi call? It's like skype right? Your using your broadband providers bandwidth. Why should you pay tmobile at all? If anything your're saving their bandwidth when making calls on wifi.
Or do I have this all wrong? It's moot for me cause I'll be on the unlimited plan when these activate tomorrow.
But when I first saw mention of the wifi calling, it never occured to me that Tmobile was charging for it.
Same thing with surfing the web on wifi...you are taking the strain off their system.
They use your bandwidth to an endpoint they own and then switch the call normally over their networks.
With WiFi connectivity you don't traverse their servers so it doesn't cost them.

....meaning Skype?
That would not be correct. Calls still have to be routed through their network--through their PBXs and switches.

Data symbol

Anyone else noticing the data symbol (h+) staying on even when connected to wifi?
Just curious... I'm running infused 1.4
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
I'm able to hide it again by putting it in airplane mode and then back, but it's not ideal
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
itll sometimes reconnect to data. not sure whats making it do that but its not actually transmitting. dunno.
Probably because it is still connected to the network, att needs to keep tabs on you. Plus your calls/text are never coming over wifi (going into airplane mode means you don't get those)
Mine will pop up here and there but I'm guessing it's just checking syncs in the background. I do use the att address book. My data symbol doesn't stay on though when on wifi.

Mine does go back to hiding. Not sure why yours isn't unless you have some odd app that's keeping it open.
Mine does this as well. While I'm on wifi the h+ will come on and sometimes go away, but sometimes it stays on the screen. It doesn't seem to affect anything so I don't worry about it.
Just curious, are you sending or receiving any MMS msgs when this is going on?

Mobile network keeps turning off?

Sometimes when connected to 4G, I will lose data entirely. When I check wireless settings, the mobile network says turning on and won't do anything. A reboot fixes it but it is annoying.
Anyone else experience this?

yeah me too....actually I have no data at the moment.

It's Verizon working on their network. People keep trying to troubleshoot it as a software problem, it's a network problem.

Same thing was happening to me all morning. I'm glad to see I am not the only one having this issue. As usual, Verizon Tech support said that there was no issues on their end.

Would that show the phone being unable to turn on the mobile network entirely? Seems weird but I guess I will wait a few days.
i had this too alot when running a froyo radio. i went to mr2.5 and haven't had the issue since.
I was about to ask if anyone was having any weirdness with 4G today... I tested my speeds using the speakeasy website and the upload speeds were fine (2.5-3Mbps) but the download speeds were incredibly slow, under 1 Mbps every time I tried. Guess it's issues with verizon testing the network.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
4g fine in chicago 22mbps down, 4 mbps up, speedtest browser test.
the problem is the mobile hotspot software. just download the open garden wifi tether on the market
Yeah I'm having the same problem. I went to VZW and they are sending me a replacement phone. I usually run CM7 but that's an extra pain to get data back. Hopefully this problem is resolved soon.

Definitely big red doing work... CSR's aren't informed about that stuff, and yes, our 3g, 4g, and even 1x operate on a new section of the network.... If it persists use the modem settings @ ##778# edit mode, password 000000, turn revA on....

[Q] NS4G not connecting to Google (white signal bars)

For the past couple days, my phone has been sporadically connecting to Google (white/green signal bars). Seems fine when I'm on wifi, but when using Sprint, the problem seems to be coming up fairly often. I checked all setting, all looks good. Is this a Google/Sprint issue or something with my phone?
Thanks!
Me too man... Sometimes when I try too load the browser it just shows white bars and the 3g icon Is white too.

Well at least I know it's not just me Guess it's a Sprint issue...
Same here

had this same issue, and now i'm not even getting 3g. cant even update my profile or prl now.
i have the same problem. it seems to happen almost ever 10 minutes. if i'm sending a text or in an app that requires internet, i'll get errors like "not sent" "disconnected" or "no active internet connections" and that's even when I'm ON wi-fi. i don't understand it. i figured if it was a sprint issue, i would get the "x" over the signal bars and not a color change. i assumed it was a radio problem? but i don't know enough about this stuff. lol
That's weird. I have the white bars and 3g icon and I can still get on emails market mms and on xda as I'm typing this now.

You still have data with the white bars. The green bars just indicate you are actively connected with Google services like gmail, talk, etc.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium
if your not getting the green connectivity to google, check how much internal app storage space you have left. not the sd storage. ive noticed that every time that i go below 100mb app storage, i lose connectivity to googles servers. and i dont get it back, turn green, until i either uninstall a few apps or move them to the sd storage.

[Q] Android sucking up my data, please help!

So I recently got my first contract, T-Mobile, 1000MB internet, 90 call minutes and 2500 texts, so in the first two days I already used up 100 of 1000MB, 35MB by me and the rest by Android (see screenshot), is there anything I can do about it? Please let me know.
Edit: screenshot didn't upload.

Wifi will not accumulate any data. Well it will but any data used over wifi will not go towards the 1000mb limit u have. So if ur on wifi turn data off just to be safe.
Hope that helps!

Try using a 3G on/off widget (so you can toggle 3G easily) and connecting to wifi when available. Also, turn off syncing for apps, and GPS.

I called T-Mobile, I should ignore what Android tells me, I don't have to pay for Twitter, Facebook and Whatsapp and background data doesn't count either.
