Barclays "Pingit" app saying device is rooted when not (possible solution) - General Topics

Hello All,
So I finally thought Apple was lagging a bit too much in hardware specs and moved to Android with the Samsung S4 and hence now popping my cherry with my first post on here.
I decided to root my device to zap all the bloatware, but soon found like many others I couldn't use the Barclays Mobile Banking App or Pingit.
After a LOT of Googling and trying different reported methods such as hiding files, temp unrooting apps, factory resets... non worked for me. So as banking is very important to me I decided to un-root it (After all, I only rooted it to remove Bloatware, and 90% of it I can disable anyway and it doesn't cause me any storage issues).
Once un-rooted I found that I could once again use the Mobile Banking app (after calling the helpline and having them de-register the device so I could re-register), however I still couldn't use the Pingit app which was saying the device was reporting the device as rooted. The helpdesk were non-the-wiser and offered to get back to me which they did after about 4 days and I had already resolved the issue.
So here's what I found and how I fixed it....
Unlike the Mobile banking app which checks if the device is rooted each time you start it, the pingit app checks it each time and then sync's this information to your Google account for backup purposes. Therefore it will re-download this information saying the device has been rooted when you reset the phone and recover your purchases.
Now these instructions are for a non-rooted S4 but may differ on other devices, but I hope it helps others tearing their hair out like I was:
1) Uninstall the Pingit app
2) Go to "Settings" > "Accounts" > "Backup Options" > "Backup and reset"
3) Untick "Back up my data" & "Automatic Restore"
4) Perform a "Factory data reset"
5) Install Pingit and it should work.
6) You should now be able to re-enable "Back up my data" & "Automatic Restore" which will override the previous cloud data.
This method worked for me and the process may be simplified without having to do a full reset, i'm not sure as i'm still new to Andoid but I hope it helps a lot of frustrated people out there.
p.s. I also came across a scenario where it could affect users with a phone which has never been rooted... For example if you previously owned a rooted phone and had installed "Pingit", then tried to install it on a new phone which has never been rooted, it could also re-download the backup which says it's been rooted and disables the app. Therefore you should just follow the above instructions and it should work.
Hope it helps, cheers.

I'm very surprised to see nobody else reporting this issue or thanking you for it.!
I've had this issue with the Barclaycard and Barclays Mobile Banking apps, and been scratching my head trying to figure out why.
I understood that some apps simply scan the directory for folders named "Root" or "Su" so I found these leftover and removed them. Nothing. I uninstalled the SuperSu App and both worked once bizarrely and then the following time stated I was rooted again. Their method of "detecting" root, as you've described - is crap! That is a stupid way of doing it, (because its foiled me for days!).
Hey ho, this looks like the only thanks you've received strangely, I'm surprised to see so few affected by this - thanks for your post!

Hi,
I have exactly the same problem but it was down to to restoring a Google backup from a rooted phone to a non rooted one. It's too late for me to do a factory reset. Is there any other way of making this app work now?

Not that I know of, have you searched the directories for any apps / folders that might give the impression the device is rooted?
The Barclays apps seems to scan for SuperSU and potentially Root Checker apps. If it finds them, then Barclays presume you are a danger to yourself with your device and it won't work [emoji53]
I'm growing tired of Barclays now anyway, particularly their refusal to run with Android Pay and go about things in their own way. Yet they will use Apple Pay.
Let me know how you get on..

How to restore Android apps synced with google account?

Recently updated my OS, and when I logged in Google asked me:
"Restore synced apps and settings, or set up wifi first?"
I selected "restore later" and set up my wifi connection (data is big $ in Canada, clicking "restore now" last time cost me $25)
Now I have a wifi connection and an empty phone because Google never asked me again about restoring my apps.
(I know about manual back-ups, but this update was an accident so I don't have a recent back-up)
How can I get Google to offer restoration again???
After a hard-long internet search I've discovered that there's an alternative way in which you can eventually recover the information from google's own servers since that's where your device (or past devices) backups/backed up your data. The following link is a guide to this option.
http://jftr.de/2014/01/fairphone-and-android-backups-to-the-google-cloud/
As a reminder, you're the only one responsible for any possible damages involved when "tinkering" with your phone. Adb and root are necessary, so please refrain yourself from continuing if you don't even know these words!

[Q] HELP! Atrix 2 cannot click [INSTALL] for APK files

I just bought the Atrix 2 few days back and I notice that after the phone has been started for a while, and I restart my phone, the APK cannot be installed anymore.
Model: MB865
Android Version: 2.3.6
Kernal Version: 2.6.35.7-g313792c
Build Number: 5.5.1-EDEM-27
Details below:
1st Attempt:
- Bought the phone and transferred my SD card with my previous phone apps backup in APK.
- Did the initial phone setup by tagging the phone to my google account, went into Google Market to install a battery status apps, surf some web, etc.
- Restart the phone and when the phone turns back on, tried select the APK file, enable the "Allow install of non-Market applications" and continue with the apk installation. It came out the permission page with [INSTALL] & [CANCEL] button at the bottom. Tried touching the [INSTALL] but no response. It's like a dummy button. Then [CANCEL] will exit the permission page.
- Tried other apps in APK, same issue.
- Called Motorola support line and she asked me to Factory Data Reset my phone from the Privacy in the Setting page.
2nd Attempt:
- Initial setup my phone as per usual by tagging the phone to my google account. Once the phone started, immediately, I use the file manager to browse my APK backup folder and install some apps with no issue. The [INSTALL] button can be clicked and apps installed properly.
- Use the phone for a while, restart the phone and turn back on... tried install other APK again... same issue happened, the [INSTALL] button became a dummy button again.
- Factory Data Reset my phone from the Privacy in the Setting page again to try again.
3rd Attempt:
- Suspect that it may be automatically downloading some apps from the google store, so this time round, I just turn on the phone without tagging to any of my account, not even my google account so that the phone should not automatically download apps from the market that may clashed with the system.
- Use the phone to do basic web surfing for a while, and then restart the phone.
- Phone restarted and try to install APK files, same issue happened again.
With the above tries, I suspected the issue (APK cannot be installed because [INSTALL] button cannot be clicked) is not due to any apps conflicting the system, but maybe some hidden updates download from google unknowingly that is incompatible to the Android system.
Further findings shows that my bro has a Atrix 1 and I asked him to restart his phone to try install some APKs, same issue with [INSTALL] button.
My 2 other friends has a LG Optimus One and LG Optimus Black, both running Android as well. I asked both to restart their phone and try to install some APKs, and everything works fine.
I seriously think that there are some conflict with the some google "hidden" update, maybe Play Google?, that disabled the [INSTALL] button as initially when phone factory resetted is ok. If this is the case, no point to go down Motorola repair centre as they cannot do anything as well until new updates from Motorola available.
Will anyone with Atrix 1 or Atrix 2 phones kindly check if you have such issue? Restart your phone 1st if the initial attempt is working as the update may activate only after the phone is restarted, such as the icon changing Google Market to Play Google, that disable the [INSTALL] button when installing APKs.
Let me know if you have a non-rooted solution, ok? Do not intend to root my phone yet. Thank you.
Have you install screen adjuster??

Hmmm. I think this may be somethign to do with your service area, not the devices. My phone has the Google Play update and installs APK files just fine. I've done multiple reboots to try and replicate your issue and can't. But the fact that you say it happens on your Atrix 2 AND your brother's Atrix 4G makes me think something in your area is giving you a corrupted update. Don't know if that could be the case for sure, as I'm not an AT&T or Motorola employee, but for two different devices with two different chipsets to have the same issue, I'd think it's a corrupt download.
Its happened to my A2 as well. I got frustrated w/ it so i rebooted into recovery, wiped data & cache. Problem solved for me.

I had the same problem on my Atrix 2.
The following appears to have fixed it for me:
1) go to Settings->Applications
2) uncheck "Unknown Sources"
3) try to install (you'll get an error)
4) go back and recheck "Unknown Sources"
5) try to install again
The "Install" button now works, and keeps working.
this works

I have troubled with the same priblem and after read this post i tried to close screen adjuster and it works .. thank you
Screen Filter app also generates this problem
Thanks for this thread. I found screen filter also has the same effect. So, before installing any apk, just close screen filter if active and then install. Works without any problem.
If you have screen filter installed then plz disabled it and try to install.

Same problem with At&T Note 2
I've been reading all the "solutions" to the dead INSTALL button and I don't have any screen filters installed. I did get the "Unknown Source" installation to work once after I froze the Google Account Manager app. Unfortunately it only worked once. I've done all the "basics" over and over.

Go to settings apps then look under the all apps tab and find google play, click on that, then force stop, clear data, and remove updates.
Next go back and launch the google play store again and link it to your goolge account when it asks you to. Also of course agree to the terms and let google play update again. Now try and see if that fixes this a little more permanently for you. I had this issue back in GB when the google play store updated to version 3 and changed to the google play store from google apps and this worked for me.
Thank you jimbridgman. That didn't seem to be a permanent solution, although I may have done something wrong. This is what worked for me:
It appears that many apps have something to do with screen "filtering" or sensitivity that can cause this problem. After going through many of my apps and "freezing" them I came upon Gesture Launcher. Freezing that has solved my problem, at least for now. My fingers are crossed. I'm posting this to help others if they may have the same problem.
Once again thanks for helping and if my problem reoccurs I'll try your solution again.
LOL it happened to me today. the culprit is screen adjuster app.! Disabled it and I could install!

Help! Apps constantly crashing. have to reboot phone multiple times a day

Hello all,
Having a problem with my unmodded XT926. Apps are crashing frequently during the day. Phone is usable but I get messages saying that Google Play has stopped working or Fleksy has stopped working. Keyboard app stops working multiple times a day. At first I was using the native keyboard app, but for the last three days I switched to Fleksy to see if that worked better but no dice. When the keyboard app crashes, I have to force reboot the phone. Do I need to reload firmware or something to get my phone stable again?
Phone has never been rooted (company phone). All I've ever done was disable some apps listed on the Xt926 Bloatware post on this forum and played around with Nova Launcher and Tasker.
XT926
KK4.4.2

Any help/guidance is appreciated. Thanks in Advance

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, it has not resolved my problem.
You can always try to enable certain things that you have previously disabled to see if that helps. I'm not sure what you have disabled but what works for some, may not work for you.
Since your rooted, you can also use Titanium Backup to freeze apps.
Are you familiar with RSD Lite?

The app crashes were happening prior to me disabling programs. I have tried enabling everything again and the results are the same. Most of what I disabled are the bloatware apps (Amazon, MC3, Real Racing, Spotify, etc.)
I am not rooted.
Have never used RSD Lite but will look into it.
You can try going into the "Apps" menu in settings and clearing the caches for individual apps. Some of them get quite large, and the cache only stores temporary data for reasons of convenience.
You can uninstall apps you don't really need (some of them run in the background and use up memory, look in "Running" apps in the system-apps listing).
Tasker is always running in the background; do you really need it?
You can try going into developer options (go into "About phone" in settings, then tap the build number many times) and reducing the background process limit.
If all else fails, you can do a factory data reset, or even more drastic, you can reflash the stock firmware.
Also bear in mind that this is an old device, and current apps expect devices with more memory and faster processors. Every time an app is updated with more features, it uses more memory on your phone and makes it run slower.

Backup important data (pics, music etc.) and try a factory reset. This should cure all you problems.
If this process cures your phones problems, you can root your phone if you like. Look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-razr-hd/general/index-motorola-droid-razr-hd-2015-t3167557
Factory reset was done prior to my post on this board.
Don't think tasker is the problem. After the reset, I manually added apps one or two at a time... Tasker was the last one added, but crashes were happening before that.
Previously, I had been using tasker for about 6 months with no crashes at all.
Right now, I'm leaning toward flashing the firmware. My company has put a temporary ban on issuing droid phones due to that big exploit that was discovered a few weeks ago. I hate iPhones and am trying to keep this one running until they lift the ban.
Thanks for all the help so far. I'm open to trying anything to just get this phone back to a stable condition.
Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using Tapatalk
so here is the latest.
Phone rebooted itself, after an app crash and is now stuck on the Droid Eye bootup screen thingy...
Force reboot doesn't fix it. Took it to Verizon store downstairs for sh*ts and giggles and they were no help. No surprise there!
Does this sound like a hardware issues to you guys?
Guess I'm going to have to bite the bullet and get an iPhone from my company as a replacement.. unless someone on here has some miracle suggestion.
It sounds more like a software issue to me.
I would see if you can get into fastboot or ADB and flash a fresh copy of the firmware before giving up entirely.
A full flashing of the firmware via RSD Lite will probably fix your issues
So I was able to Flash firmware to 183.46.15 and I also rooted the phone using sd_shadow instructions. Took me quite a while to actually download a working firmware file. The only working link I found was here: http://download1520.mediafire.com/rnbmstjwc1wg/du1p88ti1esd5fk/VZW_XT926_4.4.2-KDA20.62-15.1_1FF.xml.zip
I guess I'll see if the phone is any more stable over the next few days.
Thank you all for the suggestions. Much appreciated!
Was this ever resolved?

Snapchat locking me out even with magisk hide.

Guys i need urgent help i am rooted with magisk and have installed latest version. i have magisk hide enabled and have chosen snapchat in the options. Magisk hide perfectly works with other apps that i want to hide it from but it doesnt with snapchat. I now have been locked out of my snapchat account for 1 week and i urgently need help. i don't know what the issue is my snapchat i downloaded clean from the playstore but it keeps saying you are trying to access snapchat from third party apps. literally any help appreciated.
Thanks
Also i do not have xposed
Unroot. Install snapchat and confirm it works. Then root and hide with Magisk.
Or you can do my trick, take a backup of Snapchat (and it's data) with titanium backup, then uninstall Snapchat and restore it with Titanium Backup, I never had to put magisk hide like this for many years now and it has always worked even with rom updates and every flash of roms I did so far.
Hope it helps.

Do I back it up when I'm rooted or do I unroot then take a backup?
1. Uninstall snapchat
2. Flash magisk uninstaller in recovery
3. Start phone
4. Install snapchat and login
5. Reinstall magisk an enable magisk hide bevore opening snapchat
You're the first other person I've been able to find online reporting this issue. I've had the same problem and it started in December.
It doesn't seem to have anything to do with Magisk being hidden or being logged in beforehand. Even if I restore a logged in backup from another phone or unroot, log in, then root again, Snapchat force logs me out after a day or so. Then when trying to log in again, it'll say the account has been temporarily locked, and eventually if I wait long enough, I can log in again and have a message from Team Snapchat telling me my account was locked for X hours. I got up to 72 hours and gave up on Snapchat. Tried making a brand new account as well bad same thing happens.
I'm not sure what the hell they are detecting or how. I've never used any third party Snapchat clients and Magisk is the only thing I'd suspect them to be looking for. But I've no clue how and why no one else in the online world seems to be having this problem but us two... However, OxygenOS could possibly be a contributing factor in some way as we both as OP device (I have a 6T).

You mean the screen that says "the device cannot be checked for corruption"? That doesn't mean it is corrupted. It just means through bootloader is unlocked so it can't guarantee the system hasn't been modified from stock. But that's the whole purpose of unlocking the bootloader, so you just have to live with seeing it whenever you reboot.

It's so stupid. They send you so message through Snapchat itself from "Team Snapchat", so of course, you don't know how long you were locked out for until after the fact ?
It seems to start at 12 hours and go up by 12 mkre hours each time they lock it.
Its not Titanium Backup. I have it and Snapchat with no issues (Magisk). I don't have any theme modules though.
So the other night, I uninstalled Magisk on my old OP5T bad logged into Snapchat. Its been a couple days and I am still logged in and they haven't locked my account or anything. So it seems that somehow, it is detecting Magisk on our phones, despite any attempts at hiding it. ?
I'm just absolutely puzzled by how this is only affecting a few of us. I suppose there could be more of us out there who just haven't posted about it, like myself until I came across this thread.
Something I have noticed that may help people on OOS. I have Snapchat cloned through Parallel Apps cause I have a few logins, it seems the accounts that always get banned and detect Magisk are running on the original app, the cloned app hasn't been banned once.
Snapchat can be i PITA when rooted ... Magisk Hide works currently for me on OOS 9.0.3 though.
Don't know if this changed, but it only checks for root at login. So Unrooting -> Logging in Snapchat -> Rooting with Magisk Hide enabled worked previously for me.
But right now, Magisk Hide seems to fool it even during the login process, didn't get any error message like "We can't login right now" (Which it used to say when it detected root)
Guys this is really lame. It started for me a few days ago. I have Pixel 2 XL and I am up to a week now as well. I love SnapChat. I did not have an Instagram until this happened to me the first time. Let them lose valuable active users when they are trying to secure more. The SnapChat update for Android is kind of trash from the few minutes I got to use it like. The camera already was supported on my device well. Now I cannot share multiple memories in one message from chat. I have to go to memories and individually send them. *edit: replaced a censored word with 'trash'

lose active users? You do understand that root users are like less then 1 or 2% so they dont really care about those uses if you can make the system more secure.
There are dozens of us! Yeah, well I am, or was pretty active. I don't disagree that we are small in numbers, and I'm not sure if the amount of people rooting is growing or shrinking. I have not installed custom ROM in years, but still root.;
My banking app seems to recognize Magisk after a couple days no matter what I do as well.
Got the same problem on my S9. Magisk 18.1 on a modified samsung ROM. Works flawlessly without magisk, pretty much instant account-lock when I install it. Hide or not, doesn't matter.
Ok so I read this whole thread up to now and I have the exact same issue with an Xperia XZ Premium. Now I only rooted and unlocked my bootloader around a week ago. Prior to this when I was on oreo I used the Andromeda substratum non root method and even modified the theme on Snapchat without issues no ban what so ever. I then updated to pie on locked bootloader and still fine. Only to the point I rooted did I get ban issues. So I have no magisk modules and only around 3 root apps (one being substratum which wasn't even working for me anyway).
Yesterday it would not let me login and I found that my safetynet checks were both false and I'm not sure how they were because every other time I checked they were true and I never flashed anything. I managed to fix this by uninstalling magisk and restoring my system backup. I then installed magisk again and used magisk hide. I just got banned not too long ago.
I think they must be detecting the actual magisk app rather than root itself. That's my theory, the only way to know for sure is just to have the APK installed without magisk flashed but I don't want to get the account banned again. For now I've decided that I'll not have magisk flashed and that I'll just go without it since I wasn't really using any root apps anyway. If I still get banned after that then we would know that it's not magisk but I can report back after. I've noticed that the ban happens at 5.40pm UK time for me every 1 day.
I have an Xperia Z2 which has super su installed but it isn't rooted since I just use it as a spare phone I used Snapchat on it temporarily and didn't get any bans on that. I'll try it on my XZ Premium as is without magisk installed and if I still get banned then I'm not sure what it would be.
Okay so after not having magisk installed I now got a 2 day ban and I'm not sure how because I do not have root installed and all my other apps that are installed are the same from before I ever even rooted so I'm unsure as to why I have this ban now which is beyond stupid. The only thing I can put it down to now is the screen recording app I have but I don't even have magisk installed so I don't understand how it wants to decide to ban me for an app I don't even have installed. If anyone can work anything out with this is would be great. I do still have an unlocked bootloader.

even if you did not modify it it's still a good idea to reinstall the app after ban(or even wipe data if possible). I had this problem before when after unrooting i got banned, i formated data and then i was fine.

Titanium cannot restore apps

Hi,
been a Titanium user for a long time and usually it works like a charm.
But now I am stuck.
Re-installed LOS 16 (20191018) with formatted data/system/cache after a hosed OTA on my OP3T.
Now TiBu has issues with about 30% of the backups (for example YouTube, Locus, Okuna).
None of the three methods under TB > Menu > Preferences > App processing mode work.
When doing interactive, I get the message "App not installed" from the installer after the installer seemed to have done its job.
The other two methods just lead to a hanging TiBu at the app in question.
Using app only (without data) restore will not work either.
As two thirds of the restores work, me thinks all the prerequisites (Magisk, USB debugging, storage access) are ok.
Looking at threads with similar issues, I do not find anything that I did not already check;-(
Looking at the log I see one thong that sticks out, a message about missing splits for the package to be installed.
any ideas?
thx

Ok, some more tidbits.
Re-installling the phone leads to exactly the same apps having problems.
Workaround: Install the apps from the play-store and then load their data from TiBu.
A PITA, but better then doing all the setup again.
But wait.. No account data was restored. Just to make sure, I repeated the restore of the accounts in TiBu after the app installation.
None of my accounts have been restored.
A bit frustrating...
cheers

Same issues and I want to give up on TiBu completely. Wanted to know if anyone has an alternative to it. I do see a few options on play store but wanted to know people's opinion from experience.
