I would really appreciate some help with rooting my HTC Sensation XL which runs Android version 4.0.3.
I am not too sure if I have posted this in the right section so my apologies if I haven't.
OK so I have been trying for about 6 weeks now to ROOT my HTC. The only reason that I wish to do so is so that I can delete the apps that can not be deleted from the phone IE Facebook,Twitter & similar apps. I don't use them any more and because of this I would like them off the phone.
I have spent many of hours trawling the net to find guides and step by steps on how to do this. I wouldn't say I know/understand a lot of what it asks me to do but at the same time I have a little knowledge so that I am not completely in the dark.
But after reading several step by steps,reading about all the files I need,I end up getting lost and very confused half way through so I decided that perhaps an app that does it for me would be best.
I have seen SuperOneClick recommended several times so I thought I couldn't go wrong with it.
I downloaded the file from CNET.It is version 2.3.3. I extracted it,plugged my phone in via usb (made sure it was in debugging mode) and then clicked "RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR" on the actual SOC icon. It brought up the box and I clicked "ROOT". It scrolled and it looked like it was going well until step 7 where it hangs and just states "WAITING FOR DEVICE".I gave it some time but after an hour of it not changing from this,I guessed that something was wrong. Then when I try and click on the window,it becomes unresponsive and I have to force close it.
I have searched for solutions to this,one forum even suggested that I download an older version of SOC which I did. But it pretty much did the same thing,just a different message.
As I said,all I want to do is delete these apps so if anyone can shed some light on the problem I am having and how I can actually root the phone in the most simplest terms (talk to me as if I was your Nan!) then I would be very grateful.

Do NOT use any methods of rooting or anything else that you find in this forum. Like the post above says, this forum is for the Non XL Sensation. This is a different device with different processes. Using regular Sensation methods on an XL stands a real good chance of bricking your device.

I'm getting my thunderbolt in the mail on 4/21 and i've never had an android device before but after doing a lot of reading ive decided i want to root it because of all the bloatware the device comes with. Does anyone have any tips besides doing A LOT of reading? What are the chances of bricking it? Anything specific i should do to avoid it? I wouldn't want to break my brand new phone on the first day... Thanks in advance.

Following the method jcase made/post is the way to go. it is fairly simple because you can just copy and paste the commands. The most difficult thing will be setting up adb, but this isn't hard either. I would suggest that you watch and follow these videos, they will help out quite a bit.

Well as i mentioned i know the phone comes with a lot of bloatware that kills the batteries and i want my phone to be nice and fresh

That's good, it means you'll be careful and the odds of bricking the phone are much lower, just follow the instructions and you'll do fine. I used to feel the same way about my phones, but after you get used to it all it becomes easy.
The only thing I recommend is knowing that you have to install some sort of recovery on your phone like Clockwork recovery mod, that is a program you boot into which can backup your phone saving everything, all of the programs, data, and the stock rom/settings which your phone comes with, making a backup is essential each time you change anything so you can always revert back. I never fully understood the whole idea at first completely, but it works great once you get it.
The links Provided by Busphan will help you get an idea of what to do. Follow the instructions here: "www(DOT)androidpolice(DOT)com/2011/03/19/exclusive-how-to-root-the-htc-thunderbolt-and-unlock-its-bootloader" and by using copy/paste of the commands.
I read up for about 2 days while I was waiting and already had all the files downloaded and ready to go. That seems to take awhile so if you can do it before then it will save you some time. Go ahead and get the Android SDK on your computer as it also takes some time to install. Within 90min of actually receiving my phone I had it rooted and ready to go.
So my quick answer made long... Do the prep work before your device shows up that way you are ready to get ADB and start rooting right out of the box.
To be honest with you, if I were you, I'd just use the phone stock for a couple of weeks (at least during the buyer's remorse period) and just get a feel for android and see if it's right for you.
Couple of reasons:
1. If you don't like it or have issues with the phone, you don't have to worry about trying to unroot the phone to return it.
2. Rooting a phone gives you some advanced features. At least get a feel for the basics before trying the harder stuff. (learn to walk before you can fly).

I rooted mine the day after I got it. Unrooting is easier than rooting.

Hi guys, I'm also getting a thunderbolt and going to root it eventually (probably not within the first couple of weeks).
I have gone through the tutorials and the youtube videos. Everything seems fine as long as you follow the instructions. Just had a couple of questions :
1) Which are all the sense-less ui roms available atm? Virus and Das Bampf (what about Remix?)
2) When it comes to saving battery by using setcpu, is this basically how it goes: overclock the cpu speed but underclock the voltage? Wouldn't overclocking the cpu lower the life of the cpu?

If i can give any advice that would be to follow the procedure for rooting that jcase put together. It is simple, easy to follow, and you will gain a little understanding of adb. Try to stay away from the easier methods. If you have a problem with jcases procedure it is easier to walk you back and see where the problem occurred. The "easier" methods are much harder to find where a problem occurred. Again, just my opinion.

Im coming from a droid x and find to root this alittle challenging. While I cant get root I havent found one that I like. My whole purpose if to just get rid of bloat. After my last attempt I got crappy reception and wanted to unroot. I did and reception was back to normal. After all the problems and what with the gingerbread files I didnt want to go that route with that radio. So what are my options? With the last root attempt I used the 1 click method, was that my problem? Do I need to read up more on adb commands. Or should I say screw it and stay stock? There are multiple roms out there but havent found one for my particular needs. I know I bought this phone to learn more and be a challenge but this is trully a pain in the ass. So comments advise is greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't give up if i were you, rooting is the way to go. And ya thunderbolt is "different" but it seems from here on out most lockdown phones will be this perplexing at times, but good news to use, some companies have given up and will open up there future phones boot loaders. And its not because it lock down it just because they weren't "meant to be rooted and optimized for the user".
It seems weird that your reception got worse due to rooting, i have not heard that problem before or seen it posted in these threads. Most of the complants from rooting is either having random reboots, or the unfortunate brick or root didn't actually work for them.
Just make sure your up to date with the froyo radio when you were rooted, I know you cant check now, but maybe you used an older one the auto root method was using? Its worth a check. The newest one has had some good reception Verizon sent in a OTA.
And i used an auto one click way and it worked for me so it may depend on what one you used. But its advised to use adb.
Also there are a lot of basic de-bloat roms out there, they are just buried at the end of this forum, and never get updated because once they are de-bloated there is not much left that needs to be updated.
And dont worry about the Gingerbread problems, I wish i never left Gingerbread, i have had more problems on froyo then i was on gingerbread. With froyo i still have problems, but Gingerbread seems to run so smoothly, and a new leak is hopefully around the corner, there was one up but it was taken down and senior moderators said its coming be patience.

Well here is the file I was pointed to when I first started and I went from having no bars to 1x to 3g to 4g and all over the place.I guess I wont give up because I wanted an challenge but man this is different. More reading reading reading and find more on ADB.

Never seen that file. Stick to the development section of this forum and you should be gtg. Most of what you need is stickied at the top.

Thanks for the link, in my search I had a couple of other ways to do it but I did search.
Rooting is the only way to TRUELY enjoy this phone and all it has to offer IMO.
Ok well all of a sudden my phone cant receive call or make them but can make and receive texts? Any ideas on that. I got a phone call yesterday but it was a little wack. Called tech support and now no calls.
Hi. I bought my HTC Sensation about two weeks ago and I am very happy with it. But I also read about something about rooting, so that sound interesting to access the whole phone. Correct me if I am wrong.

I'm not new to android whatsoever.. I've just returned from an Iphone 4s cause i was missing the openess of android. Now.. i've pulled out my old Nexus S 4g, Updated it to 4.0.4 and i cant get it to connect to my computer for the life of me! tried 4 different cables, 5 different computers, every driver i could find and nothing. I've come to believe this is a software failure... All i need is root and i will be able to sleep at night. Could someone package up .zip to give root and twrp recovery that i could flash through stock recovery? I dont know else i could do to get root... but this problem is becoming quite annoying.
1. There is no way to package a zip to flash through stock recovery since it would have to be signed.
2.For someone who is "not new to android whatsoever" making 2 threads about the same topic 2 minutes apart isn't exactly acting the part.

Actually you're wrong, On the Epic 4G someone did in fact manage to do so. And yeah since i'm not new to these forums i understand that stuff like this gets overlooked so i made two posts. Cry me a river.

If you can't connect to the computer then it might a hardware issue not software.
If getting root was that easy that you just had to flash a zip on stock then everyone would be doing it. And good luck getting root without unlocking your bootloader first. Not to be rude but the problem could possibly be between the computer and the chair.

It's ok, not rude. I understand what you are saying... but did you not read what i just said? somebody had accomplished this on the Epic 4G and i'm just trying to find someone who has done it with the NS4G.. I've had 4 Android devices, rooted them all and been here since the beginning. It's not a hardware problem, it connected fine before when it was on gingerbread... i downloaded the OTA ICS then flashed through stock recovery.. but if you read what i said in the first post this problem only occured AFTER updating. This is why i quit using XDA a long time ago, because people just post a bunch of useless information instead of trying to help... The problem is not me my friend, its the damned ICS update, i've read multiple posts all over the interweb w/ people who have had the same problem, yet no resolutions other than bending up the micro usb male piece on my phone which is not the problem as i said it was working fine before i updated. Have tried multiple samsung drivers, pda net, and Android SDK Drivers, multiple Cords from samsung, to htc, to blackberry and palm pre and even a nokia one now. and 5 different computers... so tell me smart guy, what would you do?

Bro... Chill... They're just trying to help you out. There is NO way to to root your NS without a computer (currently. We are not Epic 4G owners here). You said you didn't use your NS since GB, SO during the time in between something could have happened to the hardware. Don't rule that out just yet. Your drivers might also be bad. Is this what migrating to iOS does to people? Makes them snobby and demand fixes to problems they can't figure out on their own? Don't hate on the XDA forums. If we're not helping you "hit the thanks button anyways, you ungrateful bastard" (XDA into video ). Anywho. Chill. Keep trying.

I am chill, i am just trying to describe what I've already done so maybe someone could suggest something else. And no what i meant is i downloaded the OTA on my computer than transferred it onto my Nexus through USB mount a couple of days ago so i know its not a hardware issue. Im not demanding fixes, just trying to see if anyone has done been able to figure this out yet as i know im not the only one with this issue. And there is a big problem w/ people on the XDA forums as a whole.. i am a little frustrated and just dont like when someone is telling me is a User issue when i have tried everything conceivable and know what i am doing.. Sorry if this offended you. and IOS is a good device.. its just like.. NWO they want to control everything haha. I'd rather be part of the rebel faction. even though i love my ipad XD
There is currently no way to root 4.0.4 without an unlocked bootloader (and no custom recovery), and the only way to get an unlocked bootloader is to either have root or plug it into the PC and unlock via fastboot. As such, you are stuck with sorting out drivers - despite how annoying they are.
The video i linked to above describes in detail (and through video) exactly how to sort out NS drivers on Windows machines as well as the required fastboot commands to get a custom recovery.

Yes that is a good video, and does a job well done in describing on how to install drivers. My main issue is that my Computer(s) are'nt recognized my device at all... It doesn't show up as android device, or nexus s... but Unknown device. If i could figure this out i believe i could handle the rest.

Pretty sure that video describes that. You need to open up device manager, double click unknown device (while device is in fastboot), hit update driver and navigate to the provided drivers on the site. Watch it a few times, you'll figure it out.
Have you tried to install PDANet? I've read numerous times about it working wonders for users who have trouble with drivers. It has all of the necessary drivers built in.

yes i second that,PDANet Drivers usually work across all devices you should try them.
Like ppl said before, try PdaNet drivers it might help.
thanks everyone, , but like i said i tried pretty much every driver you can find online. they will not install as my device comes up as "Unknown", i've literally tried every piece of literature on the web relating to this issue... at this point i'm just going to wait for the JB update and see what happens.

So the ICS update makes you unable to boot to fastboot and makes your device unable to be recognized by your computer from there?
That's a new one. As far as I know, "Unknown device" is actually your device being recognized, just the driver doesn't get installed correctly.
Have you tried manually specifying which driver to install and selecting the PDA Net driver? Look at Harbb's last post.
Have you went as far as editing the drivers inf to match your hardware ID? I know I had to do that way back when the PDA net drivers weren't even available.

I swear you people don't listen, look i did everything in the video exact when i try to manually specify the driver it comes back saying that the folder you specified doesn't contain a compatible driver for your device... I'm not an imbecile and know how to follow instructions on a video. I know most people skip research cause they're too lazy to figure it out themselves... i posted on here as a last resort and feel like people are telling me what i already know then telling me its my fault, ridiculous. if you guys are just going to repeat what the last five people have said instead of trying to offer a new soloution then why even bother posting?
Epic 4G could do this in FROYO... It was patched by google in 2.3+. Do you want an app to secretly root you and install malware?

Well it is going to be basically one of two things.
1. Is user error of some sort. That is what people have been trying to help with.
2. Is hardware issue that no one can help you with of course. Or some software issue causing it to not show up for who knows what reason. Neither of which folks can help with since a computer is not seeing it. So they revert back to what they can. Point 1
When you asked a question like is there a zip that you can flash in stock recovery to give you root or custom recovery that also doesn't help your cause for people assuming user error.
The one other thing you can try is download mode and Odin.

Cool. Trash your Nexus S, clearly broken.
Edit: That's nice of you albundy, but Mr grumpySasquatch (fitting name eh?) has tried everything, including modding the drivers inf. His Nexus S is broken beyond repair, also the first one we've ever seen that won't adb but works fine for USB mounting. *chuckle*

I have a HTC One X (not rooted yet) which had a very slow and poor performance... something like 92% usage of RAM... icons, menus and the phone in general was lacking and very slow.
I looked in "Settings" > "Apps" > "Only Running Apps"... and here it showed that 0,93 GB out of 0,95 GB was used like this:
"Settings" was using around 81 MB
"GO Launcher EX" = 33 MB
"GO TaskManager EX" = 23 MB
"HD Widgets" = 17 MB
"Swiftkey" = 30 MB
All the others apps are using 10 MB or below.
Note: A lot of the apps was showing the text "Rebooting"...
After this check I decided to make a clean install by restoring my HTC One X to factory default, format the internal SD card, and then start all over from scratch.
I did not use any backup tools for my apps, so I did everything manually to setup and install the phone again... like from new out of the box.
Now I am back, having installed my nearly 290 apps from Google Play market... the phone now show the exact same performance problem.
I understand that the primary benefit of a rooted phone is that you can install whatever ROM software you prefer... and that you have better control of the memory, and can setup which apps should NEVER start unless clicked on manually, and which should be running... so a better performance and the possibility to use a ROM with better features that what comes with the HTC One X out of the box...?!
So if this is true, then I have considered to root my phone soon... if none of you have great news for me on how to increase performance on my existing platform / phone.
I have been told that rooting my phone is very easy, just search XDA Developers website and Youtube for instructions... also I have been recommended to use the ROM named INSERT COIN, and to get hold of something named "unlockcode.bin"... but I am quite worried and nervous about rooting my phone based on these hints, because I have realized that there are several root guides available, different all in one software and many Youtube videos, so I was looking for some guidance on this too, in case you can provide me with weblinks to a secure root procedure, and possible a good and trusted Youtube video.
Note: I have a HTC One X which is not locked to any specific mobile service provider, so I am not sure if this means that I can skip the unlock code bin thing...?!
Does anyone of you have time to help me with these questions above, please?

First things first, are you sure you have the One X? Because if you do, you're posting in the wrong forum, this is the forum for the One XL.
Go to the XDA forum homepage, up to the top on the right side there's a text box where you can enter your device name. Type in HTC One X and it will take you to the right forum for your device. Repeat your question there.

Hi Timmaaa,
Yes, I am very sure I have a HTC One X - and I am very sorry if this is the wrong forum, I just saw that it was named like this "AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL > One X General"... and I see "One X" mentioned several times, so I thought that this was on the correct forum... I will report my thread again in the correct forum as you advised, thanks.

It's a mistake that's often made. Unfortunately certain carriers decided to incorrectly brand the One XL as the One X for marketing purposes. It makes for a confusing forum experience for some newcomers. Good luck with your device.
