Hello Everybody,
There have been a lot of posts from happy Surface owners, expounding on the great piece of kit that they just started playing with. These posts are wonderful and informative, but they also clutter up the Surface forum. So please use this thread to post in your first impressions about the Microsoft surface. It is also a great place to ask Surface owners about how well certain features are working.
By helping to keep the forum neat and tidy, you are helping the Development of the Surface!
Thanks Mates :victory:

Very excited, as collecting my Pro today , had the RT for a week and took it back , so very much looking forward to the PRO POWER !
Thanks
Stephen
GOT IT !!!
Its fantastic !!!
That's all ...................
Where did you pick it up from? I get asked a lot. I bought mine in the states.....
My new Surface
I finally decided on getting the Microsoft Surface 32GB, my son monopolizes the mini and the better half likes the MacBook Air.
I gotta say that I really am digging the feel of this. I picked it up today at Staples for $299!!!!!
I'll have to review it more when I get home.
How did you get that price
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
Staples has them in-store right now for $399...I found a $100 coupon online which they honored. It was a mistake actually, he said if I actually followed the "print" link, it would've said that the Surface was excluded from the offer. Since I ended up just taking a screenshot of the coupon and picking taking that in.
Hi , sorry for the late reply , I got it from John Lewis , it was on their www for approx. 30 mins on day of release , I phoned reserved it and picked it up from Oxford Street , I paid £75 for the 3 year warranty including accidental damage too.
Its fantastic , been playing Black Ops on it all weekend obviously with a load of other stuff too , but the 360 controller just plugs in and away you go.
Amazing bit of kit ........
I got both a PRO and an RT.
The pro is a laptop with it's pros and cons. It got lots of power and speed but it gets a little heavy due to that.
The RT is the true tablet. Cool, light and runs for ever. Only downside is the limited amount of apps.
IT has replaced an older W7 atom tablet (I did run W8 on it).
Primary use for the RT is surfing the web, reading docs (PDF and epub mostly) plus keeping me connected to my social networks
I love my pro. It is a bit heavy, but I don't mind due to it functionality. For me it is just perfect. I have a note 2, and I think that is about the best combo. Nice android phone, win 8 pro tablet. I have tried a few other tabs: ativ 500, and series 7 slate upgraded to win 8. The surface kills them. Best ever IMHO.
From an unlocked Note 2. Hmm...... Can you hear me Verizon, out on Uranus?
Like my RT, even more so with 8.1 preview on it..
Ordered a Pro on the 24th May but MS are having issues with the online ordering system so I'm told by their reps.
Had to cancel my original order and place another one as the first was stuck, they did give me £100 discount though, however it now appears like my second order placed on the 17th) is also stuck, I've been told I'm going to be compensated again for this problem...
By the time it gets to christmas I might have a free one at this rate...
I have gone from the RT to the PRO and am very happy with the PRO. The RT felt a bit crippled and it annoyed me that the desktop mode on the RT was basically useless.
The PRO feels much better to use and the higher resolution is much better. I like the pen functionality and love I can run all my old software from Win XP to Win 7
The only downsides - the much worse battery life and price. Both I can live with If you're undecided and have the funds - go for the PRO imo.

In my experience if your having problems with a company you just drop a threat about trading standards into your argument somewhere and they give in, unless its murco in St Neots who did actually recieve a visit and fine from trading standards in the end.
Pretty poor tbh, nobody as MS can tell me why neither of my orders have gone through and all the Live Chat techs can tell me is that its been escalated and that someone will contact me..
I got one of each and I do like them booth.
The RT is my E-book reader, surfpad and facebook box.
The pro is going to be upgraded to enterprise (yes I do got the licence and BACKUP on that).
I just got to play with direct access from the pro to my home net
I love my SP. I would've bought the RT in a heartbeat (esp since now my university will offer it for $250 with a touch cover) IF it could run android. Just too much I'd miss by switching over. I wish my SP would run android properly so I could sell my nexus 7 and just use the pro. ):

I bought to try, was a very good price, my course is engineering informatics, and have to be updated, and I've been programming for windows phone
well, i just bought my surface RT after my nexus 7 and im so happy.
I'm a student in IT engineer school, so i got my own server and it's so pretty to have on my tablet, a real RDP and get all access on my differents server. I will try for the vm ware web client, but for the moment is not install on my v center.
I jailbreak my tablet to get access, to notepad ++, filezilla, 7 zip, and he this surface became a powerful tool.

Hi guys
I'm looking for a good value for money windows mobile phone.
It has to have
Touch Screen
QWERTY keyboard
At least 128MB of ram
At least 400mhz CPU
Decent battery life.
Mini USB connection
Good ROM development.
I have owned
HTC S630 (64mb & 200mhz)
Imate 8502 (Good specs but no rom development)
Samsung C6625 (Good specs but not touch screen and little rom dev)
I've been looking at the HP Ipaq data messenger (£150 new ebay) but I hear its got a crap battery life.
I'm not looking to spend £300 ($500) on a phone!
Something perhaps around £180.
Has to be pay as you go. I avoid contracts like a plague!
Thanks.
get a kaiser / tilt
HTC all the way
Rhodium is the best hardware keyboard device you can find this days.
It´s a great piece of work with a great design.
You won´t regret it.
With some luck you can find a tmobile version very cheap this days, have a look on marketplace section

Do NOT, I repeat, NOT get an iPAQ DM. I have it laying in front of me here. It fails on so many levels it ain't even funny. Let me name all bad things about it:
1. The battery lasts 1 day with luck.
2. Getting a GPS lock can easily take 10 minutes.
3. It has the standard Windows Mobile UI, which blows.
4. Even if you install SPB Mobile Shell, be prepared for lockups.
5. The keyboard is crap. It doesn't type good at all, I had the phone for 7 months and I still ain't that fast on it.
6. My 'E' and 'V' button begin having troubles early on. Where I had to press extra hard to use them.
7. Pretty much no chance at WinMo 6.5.x, as the boot loader is encrypted.
8. The QVGA screen is near useless.
9. The camera is completely useless. It has no autofocus, is blurry as hell. And taking a picture can take 5 seconds. And if you want to delete the picture or take a new one, it's gonna load 5 minutes again.
10. Unless you're using some simple WiFi encryption like WEP, don't expect to have a connection all the time.
11. All the hardware buttons on the side are way too hard to press.
12. It has no Mini USB, it looks like it, but it's some HP-proprietary nonsense.
13. ROM development is 0.0, like I said, encrypted.
14. It failed so hard, HP canceled production of it not long after it was released.
15. Just don't get this phone. You'll regret it.

Tell us how you really feel. LOL
my suggestion is no matter what qwerty keyboard phone u get DO NOT GET THE SE XPERIA X1 that phone have a 512 cpu and i think like a 800 mbs on. im currently using it and im VERY unhappy with the phone. i was hoping it to be better then it should be. if u dont drops your phone or anything i would suggest a Nokia N97 or a Nokia N900
i personally would give a rating of the X1 from a 3 outta 5.
some people are havin problems with the bluetooth(headset) on the x1 and i am too.(bluetooth static noise) i personally dont like the virbration of the phone, the loudness. the phone is VERY low when is on max. and when i have the phone in my pocket i TOTALY dont feel the phone virbrating in my pocket.and most of the time the Camera frezzes on me and that lead into a phone freeze.i had a Nokia N97 and im very happy with it. i thought the SE X1 would be better then the N97 and stupid enough to sold the N97. EXTREMELY UNHaPPY WITH SE X1. AND VERY UNHAPPY WITH SE COUSTOMER SERVICES! im saying that because my phone is still under warrently, my phone having problems they're gunna make me pay 200$ to get my phone fix.. i would highly suggest N97.
N97 space is by G and the CPU is 1GHZ

+1...the Rhodium is great, and nails every one of your requirements
This ones easy. If you want to pay $250 - $300 get an HD2, if you want to pay $100 - $250 get a Touch Pro 2/Tilt2/Rhodium. Both are abosolutely killer phones and you can pick them up second hand for pennies on the dollar. I say an HD2 because you think you have to have a real KB but after using the HD2 touch KB you won't need it anymore. I bought a mint ATT TILT2 for $150 the other day, then I bought an HD2 kit with everything and less then 5 hours on the phone total for $250. Everyone is selling their smart phones to pay the $300 for the new iphone so you can get phones for nothing now in local classifieds.

Hehe, there's only one thing I really miss from the phone. That is the mute slider on top. As it allows you to quickly put the phone on vibrate and back on sound. Especially great in meetings. You just slide your hand in your pocket and do it quickly without even having to get it out.

Microsoft is bringing out their own tablet which is said to be a possible iPad killer.
Here's the reveal video. Enjoy.
Sent from Noah's Arc using Tapatalk 2
Possible? It is an ipad killer! Full featured Windows 8 running a possibly ivy bridge cpu smokes an ipad anyday. And with pen support, OneNote is gonna be sweet to use
That's what Samsung labeled the "Instinct" too: an iPhone Killer. It took them nearly half a decade later to finally do so, with the SGS2.
I really hope Microsoft has really something special to bring to the table.
The key that will dictate their success with this tablet will depend on software (apps) compatibility, selection, & dev support. (Or lack thereof) --IMO
I wish that video highlighted features...
Also like how this guy looks like an obiesed vrs of Steve Jobs lol

IIRC the x86 one weighs almost a full kilo, and that's without any cases or anything! Keep that in mind
I have to say its a heck of a machine the new windows 8 runs great on a tablet , i've had the chance to use it, so will see how they support it, but so far it should leave a mark in the industry

I'm afraid of the unannounced pricing. The ARM variant needs to undercut the ipad for it to have a chance. That being said, I really hope it does well. It's about time Apple sees some solid competition.

Sounds too good to be true!
This seems a very promising development, and the first thing, ever since the Kindle Fire's pricing, that would start to get tablets developed.
That said, the problem is that most of the features (stand, keyboard, pen) touted during the demonstration could be seen by iPad users as gimmicks, many available via accessories. This (along with the app environments) makes the Surface unlikely to steal prior consumers.
What it is more likely to do is grow the market itself. Metro is currently the best tablet UI being pushed (there are possible alternatives like Chameleon, but considering it's on kickstarter one can't really say it's being pushed), and the notion of having a PC-like processor in a tablet is attractive in itself. Hopefully this would drive an entirely new segment of the market - that Ubuntu tablet's been a long time coming.
Where Microsoft made their not-quite-enough-Apple mistake, however, was to announce too early. They didn't even leave a specified date for onlookers to look forward to, and now the estimates are turning into.. October? Consumers don't have that much patience, and by then the hype would have died down. A release two weeks from now would have sent so many people into a frenzy.
Edit: And, of course, the big unknown is the price. I'm not entirely confident that non-Apple people (who demonstrate higher price elasticities) would buy a secondary device that's only priced "competitively" (and, judging from the premium feel Microsoft is trying to give off, probably less than competitively). It could just fade into irrelevancy like many of the Android tablets. The "pro" version is more viable if people see it as able to serve as their main device, but that's coming three months after (October?).
Interesting name choice. I though the op was talking about the old surface at first, but then I saw that they renamed that one pixelsense, and are now calling their tablet the surface. Hmm..

I agree man. That marketing & deployment strategy is gonna ruin them. Microsoft needs to remember they aren't the only people in industry anymore & companies are watching each other's every move. What they introduce that's so groundbreaking today will be matched or surpassed by that October launch.
Its the APPS that we all should be worrying about.....
Good marketing, surface possible iPad killer!!!!!

Higher quality version of the vid from page 1...
I don't care how good this thing is. The marketing on it is absolutely horrible. Incompatible OS' between the two brother tabs. The pro coming out months after the regular. That seems like either they want everyone to buy the regular, have buyers remorse and then purchase the pro. I also heard they had a deal with Dell that made that happen. not sure.
Even the presentation was bad. Hardly any smiling. As if they're not proud of their product.
They also stole their own name. Lol.
A windows 8 tablet could be amazing. But it's probably no iPad killer. The marketing isn't there to make it be so. Unless when the commercial marketing comes, Microsoft pulls something incredible out of their butt holes.
They've also been quite vague with pricing details. Comparing it similar to an ultra book. More than an iPad. We know Microsoft customers. They want what's cheap. If this will compare to an iPad, the pricing needs to be spot on.
Also, 200th post.
I hope they will offer a low price and drive the whole tablet market prices down with them !
Awesome, simply awesome. I really love the Windows 8 Metro GUI!
I can see it being widespread in the corporate environments, since it runs Office and most native Windows softwares...
Interesting debate. While the surface DEFINITELY beats the ipad in the hardware front with its Intel version containing ultra book class hardware, it still does not have an app ecosystem that can dream to even rival apple's. With 128gb of space and the 3mm keyboard its somewhere in between a laptop and tablet, not a clear placement in either also, it will be really expensive. That said, with the right price, it might be a very good option for those who need some pc- class processing and browsing on the go, cause after everything, ipad is still just a mobile device. Don't expect it to be an ipad killer though I guess I can sum it up in one question.... Would you recommend it for someone who doesn't have a laptop and a tablet? Cause that will be this devices prospective market.
Thank me if I helped.... You know I'll do it again Oh, and by the way, Sent from my HTC One X

Hi==
the question is that :
Did you Pre-order surface with windows RT or waiting for PRO version (like me:laugh?
another question is :
why you prefer PRO or RT than other?
I'm waiting to 1. to play with it at the store and 2. for the pro because I want to run the full Window and optionally get Linux running too. May be get Android
I pre-ordered the 64 G one. Hope they actually deliver on the 26th as implied. :fingers-crossed:
I preordered the 32gb with the black touch cover. I like the idea of the pro better but i don't want to wait til January. If i like the RT I'll probably trade up then.

What ???
yup! 32 GB with type cover, cant wait to get my hands on it.
I dunno what to do, I really wanted the Surface but once you add the cover its to much for RT esp as I cant get cisco anyconnect for rt for work etc I am really gutted but for £500 with the blue cover its just taking the piss! Why does the UK have to pay £100 more than America! You can argue import prices but I bet there made in china so its just FUD! If I lived in USA I would snap it up but not here
It is the exact same price once you add the black cover as the iPad I mean I know its better but when you have a customer who can have an ipad with all its apps accessory's screen thinner etc for same price with same mem as the surface what do you think they will pick?
yessir, ordered me the 32gb with the type cover!
Why the **** does Microsoft US refuse to ship to Netherlands. And why the **** can't I order from the Dutch shop? We live in a global economy, for crying out loud!
So I'm not ordering anything unless someone has an idea on how to do that.

tbh I also wouldn't touch an iPad for the same reason. For this price I would get an Android tablet for half the price but then I may as well get Android phone etc. I put my hope and money and trust in MS and its been spat in my face, they want to fail simple as there is nothing else to explain it! Maybe Elop is trying to run share prices so low he can buy up the company or something I dunno but there is something adrift.

I know that and i'm sure about that, they won't let us down because they prove their self to us with windows pone 7
what's your point of view about this ?
I pre-ordered the 64 gig Surface at £559. Used Quidco for 3% cashback so have saved a further £14, making the total of Surface - £545. Looking forward to receiving it.
For me, I preordered the RT version to try it out. I can't seem to justify waiting nor buying the Pro due to the increased thickness.
If I want to get the x86 version, I'd aim for either the Asus version or the Samsung one.
Thin and light factor is quite important for me in this case.
After seeing the prices and getting very angry at MS yesterday I have now slept on it and think I will wait for an AMD tablet, there graphics power is extreme and I think they will come in on about the same price point.
Got my pre-order in for a 64GB black one with cover, plus an HD cable.
Bye.

Hey looking at getting a note 10.1 but had a couple questions.
What is the newest model?
I see the GT has 2 gb ram and the other has 1.
Also I am on the fence between the note 10.1 and windows surface rt. just looking for opinions if you have tried both. I hate reviews because they are one sided (Ipad) and don't give real world opinions.
Thanks

After a life of serving MS computers it's nice to use a computer that really helps me get stuff done. So I would not get Windows on a tablet until it was absolutely clear that I would not get bogged down in it's maintenance.
RT has few apps, and there are some people who are confused and think it comes with a pen. Let me clear that up if you are one of them.
It does not come with any sort of pen, unlike the note.
If you want Win8 with a pen you will have to look at the Surface pro (around $800???) or the TPT 2 ($1000).

If you really want a surface, my advice would be to sit back and wait for 8-10 weeks and monitor real world issues being identified by early adopters. Early adopters are likely to be MS fanboys who may try to minimize problems, but hopefully some basic problems will be discussed. Personally, I'd look to see if weight and the heat vents along one side make the surface uncomfortable to hold for long periods. Engadet reported 2-days ago that MS admitted that pen support isn't fully integrated across software, including Adobe, so if you want it for graphic work with a pen you will be lacking many features including erasure and pressure sensitivity. (Engadget contacted Adobe and got a non-commital response so they warned readers not to expect a fix anytime soon. This has me wondering if MS blew off traditional partners since they're trying to do hardware, not just software.) If you haven' t looked at detailed pictures, look at Engadet's article on the Surface posted late last week. To try to address the heat generated by stuffing an i5 proccessor in a small tablet form factor, MS has a gap along one side of the tablet seving to vent heat away. I would worry about this being a vulnerability for the physical stability of the tablet if it's held alot as well as making it uncomfortable to hold and making one's hand sweaty and thereby increasing the chance of it being dropped.

Awesome thanks everyone. I had the note and will probably get the note 2 so I know how great a Wacom stylus is. I think I fell off the fence and onto the note 10.1 side

I Engadet reported 2-days ago that MS admitted that pen support isn't fully integrated across software, including Adobe, so if you want it for graphic work with a pen you will be lacking many features including erasure and pressure sensitivity.

I hadn't heard this. Considering that a lot of software designed for PC's with graphic tablets (wacom, genius ) should be easy to adapt that is surprising.

Wow so the drivers do not support full functionality. ( Which means the apps can use it WIn 8 doesn't provide it. )
That sounds so incompetent.

I've been disappointed in MS for quite a while. They have an attitude because they've had no real competition in the OS market. I think they were caught sleeping and then went into denial when mobile devices began impacting the consumer PC market. Now they risk upsetting their remaining steady market base, businesses, with a poorly thought out and executed Windows 8. Ballmer needs to retire. They need new and younger management who understand current technology and future trending patterns.
I got a Surface 3 (4GB ram 128GB storage, 2015) that is unstable, slow and buggy (even after factory reset). The keyboard and pen don't always work. In the first couple of years, the fabric of the keyboard started tearing apart, the charging port got loose and doesn’t charge properly, the screen got colored spots (see pictures).
A youtube reviewer (video below) described his Surface pro 7 as "incredibly finicky and inconsistent, stuttering, delayed and unresponsive".
Is this a common thing for Surface devices? Did any of you experience the same thing? Or should I give Microsoft another chance and get the Surface Pro 7 (or wait for the 8)? I'm really considering because sometimes I can find good deals. Or perhaps a 2-in-1 HP/Dell/Lenovo/Asus with pen support would be a better deal?
Thanks if you can help!

Surface Pro 6 user here, for the last 13 months. Couldn't be happier with it. Keyboard as new, top notch performance, and no problems with screen or charger port or anything else. To be fair, most of the time is conected on a dock, and an external keyboard and monitor are used. Travelling a lot though (yes, even in these covid times), so it gets the usual strain.
I wouldn't go for a 7 Pro now that the 8 is close to hit the market. Better CPU and way better GPU.
Having owned a Dell and a Lenovi Yoga in the past (both 2in1), I can say that the Lenov ois a no-go for me. Few years in use and not only the charging port was damaged, but the HDMI port (mini) became useless as well, so that created a lot of problems. Dell was certainly much better and never had a single problem with it, but was heavy (inpsiron series, not the top notch XPS).
If the pure tablet mode (with no keyboard attached) wasn't so important to me, I would have gone for an XPS.

Thanks! I guess I'll wait for the Surface Pro 8 (seems like it's coming in less than a month, as long as it doesn't cost so much more...). Or perhaps I'll just go with a 2-in-1 Dell. But after using a 10-inch Surface 3 (which was bad, but so portable), I guess it's not going to be that easy to adapt to a 13-14" heavier Dell to carry around and take notes with it (this is a real concern, I travel a lot, and I'd be using it at university). But I live in Italy, the problem is that I can usually only get computers with Italian keyboard, which is so badly designed (even for the Italian language, surprisingly you cannot type certain characters in Italian without some acrobatics!!!) and it's hell to type in other languages like Portuguese or Spanish. If I buy a Surface 8, I'll have to import a keyboard from the UK or find something at ebay. But if I buy a laptop straight from Dell webiste, they offer the option to select the keyboard... maybe it'll be practical to go with it.
Thanks again for your reply!
Surface 2. In Use since i think at least 2014. Wrote my Master Thesis on it. Sure the Touchbad is a little bit worn down but the Rest and specialy the Screen ist still working like the first day.
To the USB Port "Problem" Mine looks the same but the Chargingport of my Iphone 7 and8, Nokia 930 and 925 and the Samsung Galaxy looks the same, so this is a normal Problem of all Devices with Charging Ports
But its not loose or something else. Works always

Usually the surface series keeps the same price year by year (or thereabout, at least the last few years). SO 8 wouldn't be much more expensive I guess. The biggest problem as you describe is the Italian keyboard. If you look around in amazon uk, you can find I am sure (also other compatible brands).
For other options, you can check out the 2 new Lenovo options. Pretty much same concept. One is more expensive of the two but same screen as surface (and cheaper), and the other is larger screen but cheaper with not so many options . One the the Thinkpad X12 detachable (not officially on sale yet) and the already available Yoga Duet 7i.
Finally I have just read that the a new surface 7+ will be available unfortunately for educational institutes and business only, similar to surface 7 but bigger battery and REPLACEABLE SDD !!
That looks like heat damage from long term exposure to high temperatures like it sat in the attic or desert heat for years.
