Any advice? - General Questions and Answers

I want to switch carriers. I currently have sprint and like a [email protected]#$$ I renewed my contract last October. Because Sprint was coming out with their LTE. Which is good , if it had good coverage. I only get it at work.
I have a friend with the GS3 in T-Mobile and he gets 4g everywhere.
Somebody told me there's a way to put your account with sprint on hold and you have to pay like 8 dollars a month. I don't know if that is true. Can anyone confirm.
I would love to switch. Plus I'm paying 330+ a month for 4 lines which people have told me I am overpaying by a lot.

heck yea you are overpaying...... i have one phone on att which runs me like 150 a month but I always go over my data..... now on pre paid net10 is good and you can bring any gsm phone and have it turned on with them but they cap ur data at 1.5 gigs a month

It's called Seasonal Standby. Check it out here.
http://community.sprint.com/baw/community/buzzaboutwireless/customer-service/blog/2012/01/26/what-is-the-seasonal-standby-or-temporary-suspension-plan
That bill is ridiculous. Go with the uncarrier. 180 for 4 lines and unlimited.

That does sound like your best bet.

Warning - TMO trying to force upgrade to expensive Internet plan to get upgrade price

I have an unlimited $14.99 internet plan, and at the TMo store, I was told I had to upgrade it to a $30/month plan to get the upgrade price for the phone. I just walked out.
If anyone finds a good way around this BS, please post.
Are you available for an upgrade? Typically they will grandfather in plans if you are available for your regular upgrade, but if you try to ask for an upgrade early they will force you to more expensive plans.
Your best bet is to call up T-Mobile and talk to their Customer Loyalty/Retention department. Depending on how long you have been with T-Mobile, they work wonders for you, albeit you would have to wait for your phone to arrive in the mail.
I need to fight with them today myself. I have a family plan and already had one phone with a $25 unlimited plan on it. When I added this line they put me on a $30 plan and did not grandfather in the $25 rate.

Will try calling. I was eligible on this line, but they want to force people off the cheaper plans (some nexus users are still on $5.99 plan).
PS - went to their website, and it offered the upgrade, but when I started the process, it popped up a "warning" that I would have to revisit their website after they shipped it and set up an "android" plan.
Tempted to go through the process on my credit card (not on my TMo account credit - so they cannot pull back the upgrade "discount"), and when I get the phone - just put the SIM in and see what happens.
AT $180/year more for the data plan, it would be better for me to just pay the full price. Will get most of it back from my Nexus on eBay if I decide to keep the phone past the remorse period.
Fight harder -- depending on how long you have been with T-Mobile, they will give you their new Android Premium Web for $20 a month.
I have been with them before they officially started up in the US (used them in Germany).
On hold - will see....
Guess what - from customer retention - $99 for the upgrade (not $199), and the $30 "android" plan for $20/month. I also have a 20 day period to return and restore my existing data plan.
From this and one other experience, it appears customer retention should be the way to go as a normal upgrade route (that is how I got the $14.99 unlimited plan a while back).
What's this Android Premium Web? I have been with them for over 5 years on the family account. My work account has been with them since the voicestream days.

Android Premium Web is just the official name for the $30/month unlimited data plan for Android phones.
That unlimited stuff is bs because its not truly unlimited any how u use over 3gigs for a certain month they drop udown to edge speeds but the only way u will know is if u do a speed test

First of all, the soft cap is 5 GB, not 3 GB. Secondly, I hear if you live in an area where there is HSPA+, after 5 GB they will drop you to 3G, then after 10 GB they will drop you to edge.
Secondly, it is still "unlimited" because you can still use the Internet -- just at slower speeds.
Lastly, they send you a text message telling you they throttled your speed, so you know. If you have been a customer with T-Mobile for a while, and/or this only happens to you once in a while, calling up T-Mobile can typically get them to remove the throttle.

Not sure, but they probably do.
i pay $20.00 for unl. inter. you need to call customer care and order your phone from them in order to keep your cheap inter.
I'm not sure why you guys think you deserve the right for an early upgrade when you are currently locked into a 2 year contract. If you try to talk them into it they have no choice but to force you to get the new prices.
I've never understood the purpose of locking yourself into a new 2 year contract every time a new phone comes out. If a new phone is coming out, and you KNOW for a fact you want it, then save up ahead of time and buy it full price. That way you can keep your old grandfather plans with the much cheaper pricing. Or you can do what I'm doing and go with their EM+ solutions, which only T-Mobile offers, and have a much cheaper monthly bill but buy your phones outright. It saves much more money, just sell your current phone on craigslist and pay the difference.

I was not locked in on the line I upgraded with.
Currently using Nexus from eBay - will be selling it back there IF I decide to keep the 4G. If not, I have 20 days to return and go back to grandfathered plan.
I had been thinking about just paying full price and keeping my $14.99 plan if they had stuck with $30 for the plan.
What is their EM+ solutions and do you know what the EM+ price would be on this device?

Well, it can't get any cheaper than what I'm paying - $30 voice and $20 data. I may get more minutes with EM+, but I don't need them. And, by upgrading I don't have to change plans or anything. So, I get the phone at subsidized pricing as I know I'll be with T-Mo anyway. Furthermore, if I DO need to change providers for any extreme reason, the ETF drops over time, so nothing is lost and everything is gained, at least for me.

So my contract is up and I'm thinking about switching to ATT. I'm going to wait until the inspire 4g first. Any thoughts on ATT?

Data plans sucks to be honest
Right now I pay 140 a month with a 20% discount. This is for a family data plan. I would get the same discount with ATT. I think I would pay about 160 or 170 with ATT

I think it comes to around $100 a month for a single line, not sure, never had a contract in my life jsut stuck around with prepaid. also you must be carefull when on roaming, as charges are heavy. if your just going for the phone, then you should wait as there are more phones coming to other networks
Thanks for the info. I didn't know ATT charged roaming.

Frankly, if you live somewhere without 3G and want to use data, AT&T really sucks.
All this fastest network crap is moot when verizon and tmobile have high speed networks where I live and it takes me a full minute to load a web page.

Im in the same boat all my phones are going to be up this year and was thinking of switching to Tmo. but i have been with sprint for 9 or 10 years now and have not had one problem. so i might just stay with sprint.
Im on ATT and im on a family plan right now; my phone costs a total of 30 bucks a month (5 for having the line, 25 for 2gb data).
You should definitely wait until mwc to see what all comes out. The inspire looks really good though.
Captivate 2.2.1 Paragon
I used to have AT&T and I switched to T-mo when the Nexus S was released. I got tired of my iphone and wanted to experience android. So glad i did!
I had been on AT&T for 7 years (4 years being an iphone user) and never really had any issues with there service.
I travel alot and always got wonderful reception no matter where I went ( besides LA, if you live in LA avoid AT&T)
if your looking to switch to AT&T I would deff check out the Moto Atrix 4G. Although I never liked motorola to be honest and think there phones are junk. There putting an a killer phone. Tegra 2 processor. Super AMOLED plus LCD.
Check out the Atrix 4G over the inspire, the inspire is sort of old technology I feel like when compared to the new powerhouse phones coming out with tegra 2's.
HTC should of revamped the Inspire with new internals instead of just rebranding the Desire.
Go for a company with a Unlimited Data Plan. I hate the ATT Data Plan.

T-Mobile customers were snowballing fast

Well just read radioshack is kicking T-Mobile out and bringing in Verizon to all stores. I see the end is near i don't understand why people choose the other carriers when T-Mobile gives you the Best bang for the buck handdown. I'm thinking it might be a goodtime to switch carriers before they leave us all hanging. I say that because i read engadget news everyday and there is always bad news about T-Mobile.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA Premium App
How will we be left hanging? Even with the buyout, AT&T will be forced to grandfather all of us and our existing contracts. If we are forced to change anything (plan, device, etc) it would be a violation of contract and we would have an out without penalty. Those of us without a contract have the potential to get screwed sooner. But if that happens, just leave since you don't have a contract anyways.

T-Mobile is still building their network, I know this because I am involved in the build.
What do you think they're going to do, shut everything down?
IMO, the best thing to do is get a new TMO contract locked in for 2 years, so your contract will be stable even if AT&T was to take over tomorrow.

For all the fancy 4G/LTE/etc that Verizon and AT&T supposedly have rolled out, my T-Mobile connection and performance has been BY FAR the best of all the carriers I've used...and I've used all of them!! While technical speeds on TMO might not be up to T or VZ standards, at least the damn thing works when I need it!

I just jumped ship from TMO. I was on flex pay with no contract with two lines. Sprint gave me $125 credit for each line just for porting my numbers to them. Then on top of that I said I worked at costco and got 23% off my monthly bill. Plus they will give me a free home airwave which is a signal booster/free wifi calling AP. and with the GV integration any call you make is considered mobile to mobile and doesnt deduct from your minutes(if not on unlimited plan)
Sprint's 4g coverage in my area is pretty strong as well.
so for $120(after the 23% rebate) I get 1500 anytime minutes, unlimited texting and 4g on both lines nights and weekends (nights start at 7) truly unlimited data, free mobile to mobile calling on any carrier plus the GV intergration which every call is like mobile to mobile and the free airwave for my house. I couldnt resist I just got the evo 3d but have 30 days and might return it if the GS2 comes out by then and if it's any good

I agree! I Never had any service problem whatsoever. Even if the buyout doesn't happen and T-mobile decided to close their doors, it would not happen for at least 2-3 years as they have binding agreements to provide service to millions of customers. Even that scenario is unlikely considering T-mobile stands to gain $6 billion and a percentage of atat spectrum in the event negotiations go south. There is also reason to doubt what some call ''the inevitable'' based on T-mobile's recent swarm of high end devices, price plan adjustments and advertising. T-mobile has never made as much noise throughout its lifetime in the U.S. as it has within the last 7 months.
Have fun with the dropped calls.

Who shops at Radio Shack? only old people looking for rare batteries for their cordless phone from 1994. This move doesn't affect T-Mobile in the slightest just shows that Radio Shack is struggling. T-Mobile by far has the best signal strength in my area. Sprint sucks you will get dropped calls several times a day. Not to mention you can't talk on the phone and surf the web at the same time....
T-mobile's been solid for me and i can honestly say I have had every major carrier available in the Chicago area in the past few years. Sprint is a close second but their 4G was spotty and while traveling it was almost at 3g speeds.
Were fine, were in contracts (most of us) and if AT&T takes over and tries to change it, itll be an easy way for us to get another new shiny phone from another carrier
AT&T does have the ****test service though, I had a 3GS for 6 months never had so many damn dropped calls. There was 2 city blocks by me I had to avoid when I was on the phone cause it was a dead zone lol while every other carrier had signal there fine
Back when I had my HD2, my tmobile connection was questionable. But since getting and HTC Sensation 4G I haven't dropped a single call yet. The Antenna Design in the Sensation is definitely above the rest. The only thing I don't like is the new data caps on high speed access. I am on 5 GB plan. I called tmobile to ask what do they mean by reduced data speed after I used up my quota and they basically said I would be on edge til the end of the month. Not very cool, but better than paying overages.
Well It's nice to have more than one spot to buy your phone local. Considering where i live best buy mobile don't carry T-Mobile now radioshack won't . I'm down to two places the mall where it's impossible to get a phone before they sell out or walmart. So to some radioshack ain't a big deal but too me it is, i got several phones from them and if it wasn't for them i wouldn't have got this sensation when it released. The mall sold out in a hour and so did walmart.

I don't buy phones in the store, I use Wirefly or letstalk and save the cash.
Sony Xperia X1i
HTC HD2
HTC Sensation 4G
I bought all of them off ebay with no contract.
I have never had any problems with bad phones from ebay.
These days sellers are pretty honest if there is a problem.
Sensations are going for about $400 each now on Ebay
Many of the phones on Ebay are New in Box too.
I still don't understand why people still think they need to purchase from a retail store. You are better off especially with the Tmobile merger coming up, to buy a phone outright, then get a month to month plan. That way if the network goes to ****, you can switch with no termination fees.

Yack In Da Box - Yumbo Yack anyone?
and if you live here in california like I do - You can guess what class/race of person they attract.

Who's jumping ship after their contract is up?

I have to say, after 8 years with VZW, I'm finally throwing in the towel and moving onto another network who actually respects their customers. With the lack of updates and feature support to their tiered data plans, it just doesn't seem logical from a consumers perspective to stay with a company that's hell bent on invading your privacy while offering little to nothing in return. If you're in the same boat, what network are you planning on joining and why?
I really wanted to go to t-mobile so I can cut my bill in half with them but they don't have lte where I live yet and their 4g does not penetrate my work area. I just preordered my gs4 with verizon and its the last phone I will have with them unless they give us our early upgrades back and also let us upgrade from our unlimited data lines. For now I am very satisfied with their service but my days with them are definetly numbered

I've only had Verizon now for about 9 months, and I've been regretting getting it since about 3 months in when I realized that you can pretty much only use these phones on Verizon (I've seen threads where they use them on other carriers, but it looks really complicated). Not to mention I pay roughly $55/ month just for data alone, which is just 1 GB. I dont even want to get started on how stupid that tiered data is--I know it makes them money, but I also know it doesnt cost them nearly as much as what they charge for it. I will most likely cancel my contract as soon as I get some cash to get out of it. As far as 4G is concerned, its nice to have and all, but it seems to just blow through my whole 1 GB of data in no time flat. Not to mention I use maybe 50 minutes of talking/ month, and about the same text messages. I only got Verizon so I could have a fancy phone, and I got that, and now I'm seriously paying for it. If I could get this bastard to work on Straight Talk I would be set, but I'm pretty sure the easiest way is to buy a TMo or ATT variant (you know, unless someone has a tip they would like to share )
TL;DR
**** Verizon, and I'm totally jumping ship ASAP
Would like to change, but stuck with Verizon in Upstate NY. AT&T is EDGE speeds at best outside the cities. Most houses act like Faraday cages and since I am on call I need voice and data to work almost all the time. AT&T would constantly drop calls. Sprint isn't bad for voice, but high speed data is lacking in most of the boonies. T-mobile is like AT&T (but worse).
So yeah, I'm rocking a $230/mo family plan for 4 smartphones, a dumbphone, and a measly 4GB of data a month (that is with a 21% corp discount).
Woohoo!!!
There are lots of reasons to hate VZW, but there is one reason to love them: Network coverage. A few months ago I was in ruralish Virginia, and I had 4gLTE. Those towers don't pay for themselves...

Ummmm , I've never had a problem with Verizon and I can say that they most definitely do respect their customers . I have mostly positive things to say regarding my total experience with Verizon.
Well I was able to email the President of the Southwest Region of SoCal, got the network extender (cause my base has no coverage for any cell phone service) for free. And everywhere I go I at least got coverage. I've wanted to jump ship for quite sometime
Verizon = bad, others = WORSE!
I rate 'em like this, on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the best:
VZW = -2
T-Mo = -1.5 (slightly better CS but poor coverage)
AT&T = -6,593,865,432
Sprint = Will they be in business tomorrow?
NOTE, all carriers suck, nobody even rates a zero and I'm in a really good mood so I rated AT&T's "We don't care" CS and "Oops, we dropped your call" network much higher than they really deserve.
I'm sticking with VZW.
I have mostly positive experiences with Verizon and with Sprint but I had bad experiences with T-Mobile and AT&T. With t-mobile it was mainly bad cell coverage while AT&T it was customer service.
I pay 55$ a month. 2gb internet, unlimited calls to cellphones , 500 landline minutes (unlimited on weekends and weekday nights I think) unlimited texting, 4g is good here in Houston. I've been thinking when my contract is up, T-Mobile. Maybe back to cricket even. I just don't know anymore.

I have really been contemplating switching to T-Mobile. I'm in NYC and LTE in Manhattan during the middle of the day is no better than att/tmobile hspa. I rarely get over 10mbps with my galaxy s3. But the overall coverage is great and I really don't want to give that up. I hope that with metro pcs T-Mobile can expand their service.

Same here. I've been with Verizon for probably ten years and although their custom firmware settings on phones and fairly high prices grinds on me a bit where I live they're still the best game in town. Just renewed with them for two more years when I got this pair of i535s from Best Buy.

Yes ......call them and tell them after you upgrade you want your unlimited back .They will give it to you. But call before you upgrade so it will be in your file. This only can be done on the phone not in any store. When you upgrade just take the 2gb plan. Then when you get the phone call them back and tell them to put the unlimited back on. They do this for loyal customers. Don't let them tell you they don't cause they do. The person you speak to might not know so ask for another rep.Don't upgrade until it is in you file saying they will give it back to you after wards. This works I know for a fact. This is just not advertised. I only learned because a rep was nice enuff to tell me.....So spread the word...Its called The Loyal Customer worry free exchange program......THIS DOES WORK .I UPGRADED MINE AND MY WIFES.PLUS MY BOSS AND BARBER( I get free hair cuts now lol):thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

You will miss Verizon sorely once you do any traveling. No other network comes close to the coverage they have.
I can't jump ship from Verizon either because the carrier I want to go to (T-Mobile) has the same crappy service from when I was with them 2 years ago. If LTE was to come to my area on T-Mobile I would definitely test it and if its worth it i'll jump ship from Verizon. But Verizon has to be the best service I get in my area & i'm still grandfathered in on my Unlimited Data, been getting phones through Swappa & Craigslist for the time being.
To me, it's similar to Comcast - they have high prices, but the best service too. I always have a great signal, blazing fast internet... hard to complain about the price to me. I'm coming from Sprint, who's price was barely cheaper, and the service was terrible.

Anyone get the M8 using Edge program?

I picked mine up on March 25th and since I'm not due for an upgrade until this September I decided to purchase via the edge program. I'm still on the fence about the edge program and supposedly I have 6 more days to return the phone and cancel the edge upgrade. Anyone else get their M8 using Edge and if so what are your feelings about it? Also if anyone's been using Edge for a while now your input is appreciated too. Thanks!

I've been using it since the m7 came out, no qualms with it. Raises your bill a bit. Got this on edge as well.

Got mine on Edge. Was planning to buy it but when I added the 14.99 x12 +40 something initial it works out to me about 20 more overall. For me it was worth knowing I can turn my phone in after a year as I always want the newest phone.

My bill went down by 2 dollars by going with edge, so it's a win in my book. Did you get the 10 or 25(if over 10gigs) bill credit? That makes it a no brainer for me.
I had 8 GB of data they upped me to 10 and said my bill would be the same

IMO, the edge is only good to get on if you are either getting a cheaper phone and want to stay off contract, really want to stay off contract with a more expensive phone and not have to pay the large off contract price up front, or you like to upgrade phones a lot and have the money to throw around for it.
For the M8, if they did it correctly, it would be like an extra 25 dollars a month for 2 years. It's supposed to be the off contract price broken out and financed basically over a 2 year period. You can upgrade at any time however, without renewing your contract by paying for at least half the cost off the phone and turning the phone in. Meaning for the M8, you'd have to pay at least 300 dollars totaly (either by 25 dollars a month or whatever the difference is between 300 and what you've paid so far when you want to upgrade).
Doesn't sound like a very good deal to me. But then again, I still have unlimited data If I was forced to give up my unlimited data for some reason, I might would consider the edge, but most likely I'd just buy an off contract more reasonable cost phone like a nexus line phone or something. The amount price of off contract phones is mostly ridiculous and way higher than they should be. These things could be sold for 300 - 350 dollars and the companies would still probably be making a profit, you can look at the Nexus 5 to tell that.
It really isn't a bad deal, you get a credit for $25 if on a 10gb or more plan, so your bill actually goes down just a little and you don't get locked in, I feel the edge program is a win win really

If you want out you have to pay off the phone and the etf... So, yeah... You're locked in.

Well I guess I mean locked down for upgrades, (where I live Verizon is the only carrier that gets great service so in my eyes I will always be with them) but it's nice to be able to upgrade when you want

How does it lock you in? My contract still expires this September.

I'm on the fence about edge
I got the phone on edge cause I can't bring myself to spend $600 for a phone that I make less than 10 calls a month on. I use it more for music and occasional video, some ebook reading, little bit of web browsing, and once and a blue GPS. So the question was is my unlimited data worth $600 today? I use an average of 1.5 Gigs/month on edge the gave me 6 Gigs for the same price + $14 month for the phone financing. I paid $80 down on the phone. My thinking was; sooner or later VZW will just stop offering unlimited data to month to month users. So how would I feel if I spent $600 and in 2 months time I get a letter from VZW saying Unlimited data is no longer a service tier that they offer on a month to month basis. Now I have a phone that I cant take to another carrier(?) And I still don't have unlimited.
I'm still thinking about going back to the store before next week and switching back. I wonder if they will charge me a restocking fee, to switch me, meaning return my phone then do a new sale or will they just let me pay the difference of the retail price and my down payment?
I got edge program since my Bill overall at the end of the day is the same as it was every month on ATT. Basically pay the same every month with Verizon as I did on ATT but can upgrade my device every year (or sooner if I wanted personally) and again pay the same every month. Versus paying less a month and $199 or whatever phones cost and be locked in a few years on that device.
I don't know how it effects your contract ending... But edge actually extended mine

If I check my contract end date it still says this September which means it didn't change since getting my M8 on edge

It's a promotion I believe that started around day 3 this device came out on Verizon. When in store I got $20/month credit. They said call customer service tomorrow and I will get $25/month credit a s long as I have Edge. I believe my Edge cost is about $25/month so with the $25/month credit it's like it's free and can upgrade whenever I want zero down. Win win, call customer service, was quick and easy, took 5min to enable this.

Yes I have 10gb plan shared with my wife. For some reason though store couldn't enable and said to call next day. Just figured it didn't start til next day? Did all this I believe the second day this device was released for Verizon.
Old news but I'll just leave this here. http://www.theverge.com/2013/7/18/4...hone-upgrade-plan-same-bad-ripoff-as-att-next
