I'm about to get the 32gb At&t version.. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 General

Because:
1. I can still pay $249 and renew my contract (Ughh contract)
2. The at&t developer edition and the google edition will only come with 16gb
3. The at&t developer edition and the google edition will be at least $650
4. The at&t 32gb version can now has cm10.1 or other custom roms
Are these good enough reasons?
Appreciate input

None of those reasons are good. You're just saving some upfront money by bending over. And you better hurry before the boot loader workaround is patched.

I am happy with getting the 32GB.
1) Same price I paid and yes... ugh... contract!
2) I am hoping that we can change our phones to the Google edition (keyword: hoping)
3) The AT&T branded was pulled from the site, still speculation until official announcement
4) Rocking Slimbean, awesome!
I say get it, I am considering returning my 64GB external card to make up my difference. I have Horn and few other games installed and still have 17GB left. I stream all my music and videos, and sync what I want for offline mode if needed (hardly ever).
Another thing to consider is that the phone is able to support USB-OTG. Since my Nexus 7 cannot have external, I am already use to that and carrying a 64GB flash drive.

Thats true, I just rather save my money and spend it on the next official nexus then some "google" branded sgs4. And yes I better make up my mind quick.

Im not sure how google updates its devices like the nexus, i'm sure its looking at the devices imei or serial number to make sure its their device?
Has this been done before where you're basically fooling google into thinking your carrier phone is from their playstore to receive ota's?

for those needing the extra gb for apps, a much simpler, easier and a less expensive route would be to use ur microsd card to mount and install games on. foldermount is very good and it saved me about 49+35(32gb version and restocking fee, foldermount costs $.99), minus the cost of the microsd of course, which i already had. it will save you the hassle of exchanging, reactivating, paying a restocking fee etc.

Until your micro SD craps out...which happens all the time for a lot of people. Of course you could just get another and put the games back on it, but there is no guarantee it won't happen again. It is a nice option for people that don't have a choice, but if given a choice, extra internal SD space will always be better than external SD space. Especially for fast pace games or if user data from the game is also stored on the external SD. But, like I said, it is nice that people have the choice.

Pay for a good Micro SD card. My Samsung 64GB MicroSD has faster 4K write speeds than the S4 internal memory. I would rather the games run off it lol.

I'm not saying it's a bad idea, and I'm glad it works great for you, but "good" microSD card is completely subjective. All you have to do is read through any of the S4, S3, etc... forums and you will see that randomly, people have trouble with any SD cards. It's basically a crap shoot. You can't say because your personal experience (1 person) with particular SD card has been positive that many others negative experiences with the same type and brand of SD card shouldn't be considered when deciding if this is the right way to go with the phone's memory. Of course I realize that others have had positive experiences with the same SD card as well, but that is my point, it is completely random. So overall, I would definitely trust the phones internal memory over any SD card.

The S4 has like a solid state inside of it, I've tested the speeds its fast internal memory.
I have a Class10 Ultra micro SD and it's not nearly as quick.

Please find me some bad experience someone has had with my card. Its the Class 10 Samsung 64GB Card. Everything I have seen from trusted sources is rosey.
I get where you are coming from. I have a bunch of SD cards, and some so-called elite cards I bought from brands like Sandisk, Patriot, Lexar, and Transcend that all crapped out on me or gave me terrible 4K speeds.
But my 32GB Class 6 Samsung card is like a rock, and reviews online from confirmed knowledgeable sources bear out my experience as well. My Class 10 64GB card has been great as well, and its generally regarded as the best card you can buy.
The truism that Micro SD cards are unreliable should be buried with these new Samsung cards. Armed with better fabrication processes, they are putting a quality product out there we simply couldn't buy before. They are not just giving us the MicroSD slot, they are making good cards to put in there.
Now I wouldn't trust a non-Samsung card, but the prices are coming down on real Samsung cards.

Sandisk or Samsung for reliability. Transcend is OK. Kingston or patriot us a crap shoot. Lexar are fast but I haven't used their card enough to give an opinion.

It's great that "your" SD card works great on "your" phone, but understand that is just "your" experience. It doesn't matter the name of the card. Some swear by Sandisk because they have had great experiences with them. Does that mean that your less-than-great experience with them didn't matter? Do you think everybody gets terrible 4K speeds that use Lexar just because you did? I use a Samsung 32GB class 10 card. So far it is working good (knock on wood), but I'm not going to say that because it works good for me that it works good for everybody. That's ridiculous. Your experience and my experience doesn't count for any more or less than the next person's experience. The fact is, the removable SD media, at this point in time, is definitely more volatile and less reliable than internal memory.
I think Samsung makes great cards, but I will never trust it as much as I trust the phones internal memory. And honestly, I really don't even trust it. I make sure to back up all important data, pictures, videos, etc... in at least two other places.
The way I see it is use what works for you. The same thing might work for some, but for others an external SD card just won't take the place of more internal memory.

Not raining on your opinion, but I think of SD cards as expanding internal memory and temporary backup. And the upcoming Google gs4 it will partially become backup getting to test aaaaaand carry around roms more often. Haven't been able to seriously do that since the nexus one. But yeah anything important shod be shot up into the cloud. The extra storage is just gravy and shouldn't be critical.

Serious question. What's the difference in money between buying a phone on contract and bending over, and buying a phone outright and then do you pay month to month? I've only ever bought phones on contract so I have no clue.

They say the non contract or prepaid are much less expensive. Most people I know on ATT or Verizon get some type of corporate discount. I pay $70 a month total and my wife who is on t mobile pays more than that I believe. I have the old unlimited plan as well.
If you are staying with a contract company like ATT why not use the subsidy? I have been with att since 1997 and do not see myself leaving, the network is excellent where I live. I got my 32GB S4 for $270 out the door. Pre paid and no contract might be great for some but I do not mind paying for a premium network. Not going to get an S4 or HTC One for the price of a Nexus 4...and is all honesty I have not even thought of reaching for my Nexus 4 since May 13, the day my S4 was delivered!

Copy all important data/pics/backups to a computer! Once SD memory goes, its gone for good mostly.
I'm way too paranoid about flash memory failure to spend more than 50ish on a microSD card.
Last time my 16GB SD card crapped out on me, and I lost lots of pictures and videos from a trip.
As far as 16GB class 10, it could be nice depending on the price....

Class is just the minimum the data transfer's are rated to run at, not the maximum that the actual card can run. So my Class 2 could run at Class 6 speeds, but not garaunteed to do so.
Thanks for the great link though, gonna grab one!

I honestly don't think a lot of these high class less quality SD cards are worth it. As mentioned earlier in this thread, the class is only minimum. It also doesn't take into consideration the longevity of the card. I bought the 32gb patriot (Class 10) from new egg and it totally when bad on me after 3 weeks. I lost some important info (backup up most). Was able to luckily return it just under the 4 week limit newegg has for returns. Not to mention the speed was really no different that I could notice compared to the stock SD card. I'm probably going to get the Sandisk soon since it's the only brand that I trust.

I bought the 32gb that Verizon sells today for $99. It was regularly $149 but its on sell right now. Its still kind of pricey, but I really like it. Doesn't slow anything down, and now I can put more music and movies on my phone. You can get the same card on Ebay for around $65 right now. It's a SanDisk brand and Ive always had good luck with them.

[Q] HTC One X Dissection - Expandable memory?

Though I was holding out for the S3, could not help pass off a $49 upgrade on the HTC One X. I have seen disassembly pics of the HTC One X and am wondeing if they use a microSD card for the internal memory (like Samsung did for Captivate? ) and if it would be possible to swap out the memory card with a cloned say 32 gb / 64 gb card?

Oh man, I'll be so pissed if that turns out to be the case. If so, why would they give the XL only 16GB when the Tegra edition has 32?
Maybe the difference in price between the S4 and T3 is the same as a 16GB mSD card and 32GB. There's always trade-offs to be made in hardware design. HTC probably wanted to keep the phone below a certain threshold regarding component cost.

I was wondering the same thing the other day. I love almost everything I'm seeing about this phone but the 16GB (actually, only about 12GB usable) thing is really making me hesitant to buy it. Too bad the captions in the pictures aren't translated!
I don't see any microsd or microsd slot in any of those pics. Internal memory is usually a soldered chip on the board. Would be pretty difficult to swap those out.

Actually, none of the Samsung phones ever used internal microSD cards. Samsung phones always use NAND chips (Captivate included).
In the past, HTC always use miroSD cards for internal storage. But it may have changed recently. Who knows.

Yes, and the solder joints are usually tiny on the chips. Very difficult to do by hand (if not almost impossible), with little room for error.
The words in simplified Chinese are simply describing how to take the phone apart. The original pictures are a part of a series of pictures teaching you how to take apart the phone and the text are things like "The camera is connected to the main circuit board, so be sure to be careful when disassembling." I went through all of the pictures on the original site and none of it mentions where data storage is.

Thanks for taking time to review the pics and the translations.. Its a shame that HTC decided to skimp on the internal memory and provide no expandable options. Suspect att strategy involves increased dependence on cloud storage that would force users to increase data consumption... Chi ching!

Since the at&t version only has 16 gb, does anyone have the ACTUAL real storage space? Does it end up being like 14.92 gigs or something? This phone looks really sweet, but I currently have about 12-13 gigs of music on my captivate and the 16gb could pose as a real annoyance.

Thanks for the info, but WOW is that a small amount of space. I have close to 5GB on just pictures and videos alone.
I was thinking about google music, however, I mostly listen to music while in the subway; which means no reception/wifi. I had my sights on getting this phone, I guess I may need more time to think about it. If HTC was able to put a slot for a microSIM, why not a micro SD as well? . But, like someone stated in an earlier post, I'm sure it is to force people to use the cloud, which uses data, and ultimately creates overages.
I've been waiting to see a teardown to see if replacing the nand would be possible. If it was that would make a huge market for broken International One-X boards. I can't judge by the pictures if it's possible. Usually on a teardown there's at least 20 pics.
As far as AT&T's plan and why they knocked us down to essentially 10 gigs..
You had one thing right when you said cloud dependency, but I think it goes much further than that. Think of the 23GB free Dropbox space they're giving us all, the Google Music they are all undoubtedly expecting us to use. It's the precursor to their future attempt to hold your data hostage! What are you going to do if you don't pay your bill and your service goes out? You can't access your dropbox on the go, you can't stream your music through Google Play. They know that nobody wants to actually fill that measly 10 gigs with music. It's an attempt to get you more motivated to pay your monthly bill, and to extend your contract for another two years once this one is up. It's funny how they give you 23 gigs on your dropbox for 2 years, the same as your contract length. Something tells me that extending your contract will get you another 2 years once it's up. It might look like simple marketing, but honestly it's quite shady of them.

Keep the 16GB or return for the 32GB?

I have been torn about keeping the 16GB or getting the 32GB. I just don't know what to do. I have used a large amount of storage on the 16GB already and my 30 day return is up tomorrow. Any suggestions?
See the thread int eh android development section about Apps2SD that you can run without rooting or anythig. The author is TweakerL. Look it up.
Return for 32 imo. Unless your a pop the collar with your hat turned backwards kinda guy. Then keep the white.
I faced the same dilemma and decided to switch from 16gb to 32gb... If not it would have bothered me.
The only thing I miss is the White color...
I don't have the white one.

I have the 16 GB but I used this app to move my data folders to my 64GB microSD card. You can actually move any folders over, not just data folders.

I like the white color so this works out really well for me. This app effectively turned my White 16GB note into an 80GB note.

I don't view $50 as loads extra. Plus no matter how big your microsd card is you'll always have 16gb less with a 16 vs 32 model.

I have a 64GB card in there now and it detected as 59GB free. It's formatted FAT32.
I went right for the 32 gb because id second guess like yourself . Plus my a500 is 16 gb and runs out fast. So 32 + 64 gives me 86 gb of storage

Availability of the 3G 32GB version is a problem too, at least in Europe. No 3G, no tablet for me personally.
I ordered (and have been using) the 16gb in white for 2-3 weeks, and just decided yesterday to order the 32gb in deep gray, instead. Although I try to store all of my media externally, I use up that space quickly. At the same time, I find it to be a PITA to swap things between internal and external, such as backups and ROMs. I don't mind paying $50 more for twice the memory, but I wouldn't have paid much more than that at all.
As for the color, while I like the white, I'm not fond of the silver/gray borders; I think it makes the device look kinda cheap, like a toy, though I do like that it resembles my Skyrocket. However, the border on the Skyrocket is not only a lot slimmer, it's chrome, which is much more appealing to me. I wish they had done something similar in this case.

All 64GB cards show as 59GB. It happens with all storage devices. That's to do with the fact that you're never going to get the full amount that you get told you will, because a portion of that memory is actually being used by the storage device for information pertaining to its self.

It shows as 59GB mainly because manufacturers give the storage sace in 1000s wile your tablet counts it in 1024s.
I looked at this for mine and decided to go for the 32 gb model since DRM protected movies cannot currently be moved to the SD card.
Google Play phone support guy advised that they have rec'd a lot of requests to enable this, so perhaps in the future it won't be an issue.

Google Android Chief: Why don’t Nexus devices have SD cards?

In short, SD card is too complicated. What?!

Everybody likes the idea of having an SD card, but in reality it's just confusing for users.
If you’re saving photos, videos or music, where does it go? Is it on your phone? Or on your card? Should there be a setting? Prompt everytime? What happens to the experience when you swap out the card? It’s just too complicated.
We take a different approach. Your Nexus has a fixed amount of space and your apps just seamlessly use it for you without you ever having to worry about files or volumes or any of that techy nonsense left over from the paleolithic era of computing.
With a Nexus you know exactly how much storage you get upfront and you can decide what’s the right size for you. That’s simple and good for users.

The vast majority of people are not tech savvy so simple is better for Google and they will sell more. Same reasoning for the phone hybrid ui on the tablets.

Happy to accept what google are saying, but if you wont offer the option of an SD card you probably need to up the max capacity from 16, to 32 and possible 64. Thats if you want the best product going anyway
I used to believe external SD card support is a must have. But in reality, I never needed it. And having everything in the ROM = Faster access.
TBH, I have yet to reach even 8GB let alone 16gb in my GNex.
16 gb are way to low for me. i am using my device as a mp3 player and i now have about 20 gb of music on my sd card. i seriously cant follow the arguments against an sd card slot

You really need access to 20GB of music all the time? Why not use Google music to stream most of it and just keep your most listen songs on your device

lol that's some insultingly poor marketing bs. Even Apple wouldn't make such a crappy argument to justify the removal of a very crucial and popular feature from one of their flagship devices.
If you backtrack and stop supporting something that people used to take for granted with your product, you better have a damn good reason.

Seriously?
1) capped, expensive data plans.
2) 3G/wifi are not a given for many users and usecases.
3) take longer to play a song that you already have a local copy of (why?)
4) Google Music does not have a public API and the official app sucks.
And for the record I definitely "need" at least 20 GB worth of music at any given time
It sounds like a statement Apple would issue. My old "dumb" phone had a setting for whether to save camera pics and videos on internal memory or external microSD. Is is really that hard Google, or would you rather take the Apple approach.
Here are my reasons why phones should have SD slots:
-You can get tons of cloud storage for free, but using that storage will cost a lot if you don't have unlimited data. It will also be slower to access than locally stored files.
-Programs, especially games are getting bigger. Its not uncommon to have a single game want a GB of space for its files these days. They will only continue getting bigger and that phone you just bought is stuck with the same amount of memory. It may be enough space now, but what about in a year?
-The price to buy a device with larger internal storage costs much more in $ per GB than a microSD would. Its $50 more to go from the 8GB Nexus 4 to the 16GB. Meanwhile I've seen 64gb microSDXC cards go on sale for $50.
-The memory is not stuck in one device. If I invest in a 64gb card I can take it to my next phone without paying more.
-Its very cheap for an OEM to add a microSD slot, were not asking for a lot of hardware.

Dude 20GB is a LOT of music. It's probably a few days 72 hours worth of music. Don't keep it on your phone, keep about 14 hours, that's the plane ride from USA to China (halfway across the world). I can't even begin to justify the need of so much music.
I only have maybe 4 hours or so of music, that's enough for me. I don't care if a few songs repeat, it's like the radio.
EDIT assuming each 10MB file is 3 mins long, then you actually have 100 hours of music.

When the argument becomes about how much space a consumer really needs, then the answer is obvious: let the consumer decides.
But if you are willing to concede and let the maker make the choice on storage capacity, at a time when storage has become so dirt cheap, then a good option is to buy a product whose name begins with i.
That is one weak argument from google.
Why not make the nexus 8 or 16gb as it is AND keep sd card support?

Frankly, that's almost insulting to assume that we are that stupid. i chose Android over iOS why? Because I am not stupid, I do not want to be spoon-fed technology like a drooling infant. I chose android because I have a choice- I can choose what to do with my device, how I do it, everything like that. I can choose the software I want to install--and I can chose where I get that software from. I can even choose the operating system, or write one myself, if I want. That's what makes Android such a great platform. Choice, scaleability.
To just write that off as "too complicated" is absolutely...dumb. And makes me question just what the future of the android platform will be.

maybe it is a bit offtopic but imo 20gb of music is not much. i still use a mp3player (much better than using the smartphone) and there i got 8gb & 32gb (sd card).i really like to have discographies on the go of my favourite bands.
also: not everyone is using .mp3 - people also use .flac which takes a lot of space.
regarding the topic: sounds a bit stupid to me. probably the production is just cheaper this way and it makes it more difficult to put custom roms on it.
I think the google android chief is brilliant, that philosophy should be applied everywhere:
-4 doors in the car? Too confusing for the user, seal 3 doors, that way we always know how to get in and out.
-6 windows in the house? Make it just one, so we don't look out through the wrong one.
-who needs cable tv? Block all channels but one, so we don't get confused as to what's on tv.
-you have 2 kids? Send the other one to google, keep just the 1. That way you'll always know who failed their math test, or who fed the hamster to the cat.
It's a marketing strategy to get more $$$. That way they can sell very expensive gb of internal space.

Mildly Infuriating: 128/256GB Storage Option will be available for US on May 18th

File this under "WTF Samsung."
https://news.samsung.com/us/galaxy-s9-s9plus-new-128gb-256gb-storage/
I waited and researched my options, before finally pulling the plug and settled with the unlocked 64GB SD version that's available in the US. I bouhgt my device on Apr 1st, didn't even realize that their window to initiate RMA is only 15 days.
Chatted with a live chat agent, and didn't offer any other way to help me to exchange to the larger storage options as I'm out of my 15 day window.
I want to see if anyone else has encountered this situation with Samsung direct...I've read in the past bout how terrible their customer service is, so not really putting much hope on this one.
Or open to any other suggestion as well.
TLR: Bought 64GB on Apr 1st from Samsung.com, now they announce the larger storage options but I'm out of the return period.
Your going to need to sell it, as much as I hated to say that.
But I am with you, I never really need 128G but if its available I always get it because it increases the resale value. Now that they got 128 / 256GB I am sure the resale of the current 64GB's just hit the floor.
Wow that's kind of messed up for those who actually buy these devices and have to recoup the costs when they upgrade later
One of the reasons I went with Exynos was for the 128. I'd almost consider selling it for the SD variant now just for the better radio support in the u.s.

Is wanting a bigger storage option just solely for the higher resale value after? I would understand the outrage if there was no expandable storage but in this case there is expandable storage.

nope, I just need bigger storage since I have a lot of apps and files even with my 200GB microsd. Constantly moving pics/videos to the Microsd gets real old real fast.
and as mentioned before, having UFS 2.1 speed is not the same with microSD. Especially if you're recording 4K videos, you need a U3 speed card for that. Even sandisk 400GB is only U1, god knows how much their new extreme U3 version card is gonna cost.
