I have an otterbox defender on my S4 and since I put it on my air gestures didn't work, I figured I could live without them but then I noticed when I make a if I pull my phone away from my face the screen stays off (actually it seems to go blank as soon as I place the call...), is this a problem with my S4? my case? or is this typical of S4s with otterbox defenders on them? Is there some way to turn down sensitivity (or up?) or something? the tests for the air gestures work fine but when i go to use the gestures themselves they don't work, air view works fine...
Have you tried it without the case since you discovered your issue? Probably the easiest way to determine if it's the case or the phone. I know everything works with the Commuter, but I was considering the Defender when one pops up locally.
Yeah It works fine without the case on u just don't see how the defender interferes with the sensor it's not covering it at all. I was hoping to find someone else with a defender to see if it's common with them. My neighbor has a s4 and I'll try to catch him syndrome to see if my case interferes with his as well. But idk when I'll catch him.

I wonder if it will work with the Commuter case for the S4? Was looking to get the OB case and a Glas.tR as well
Mine works fine with the defender on it.

Just curious, what color defender? and do you use quick glance? that's the #1 gesture i'd like to work.
Black. And all seems to work with mine. No problems.

I doubt it makes any difference but iirc the sensor is an infrared sensor so reflectivity of the material in the IR band may affect it so just for the record I have a white s4 with a white/grey defender (white plastic grey rubber)
I'm having the same issues, sometimes air gesture will work but sometimes when i talk on the phone using viber, the phone just stays off when i end the call, i have to press the home button just to end the call. I have the black and yellow defender by the way.
Well I tried my Otterbox on my neighbors white sprint galaxy s4 and same thing, air gestures work fine without the case and stop working when the faceplate for the case goes on, I've sent an email to Otterbox about it, it seems some Otterboxes work with air gestures and some don't... Hopefully I'll hear from Otterbox on Tuesday.
Edit: Just heard from otterbox requesting pictures for a warranty replacement I'll make a new post to the thread when I get a warranty replacement and let y'all know if it fixes it.
New otterbox same issue and I see no way to fix it other than switching cases so im on a seidio convert now.
All working for me with OtterBox Defender Black without built-in screen protector
Just adding my two cents. Black s4, black/yellow defender. Works just fine.

Same one I have. Phone and Defender and I have not had any issues. Even tried the answer by moving my hand across the screen and that works.
Black S4, black defender case - gestures don't work for me either.
My air gestures work. Defender.

It's TOO TIGHT! Yes, it fits on the phone without a problem BUT the button inside of it that is used to press on the power button pushes all the time, causing the phone to reboot.
I've got it sitting on the dash of my truck today to warm up a little, maybe it will stretch then and I will try it while it's warm.
If not, I may have to alter it a little by cutting out the nub that's inside of the button section of the case.
weird... Im using a smoke argyle TPU case for the vibrant on my SGS4G with perfect fitment. and it looks super cool with the shimmering backplate.
Works fine now that I let it sit in the sun a few hours!

Perhaps Gel case was the wrong name for it... Not sure... it may be TPU...
If you go into the T-Mobile store it's somewhat of a rasberry color up top then fading down to black at the bottom.
Had the same problem with mine. Even my friend who is a manager at the T-Mobile store said that the raspberry cover had that issue. I liked the cover so I'm going to try and trim that area down a bit on the inside.
Let me know how it turns out. I ended up taking the case off because I was worried about wearing out the power button. I couldn't even tell it was pushing in when I had the case on.
Yea I'll stick to my bodyglove kickstand case. My wife has one of those skins/shells and I can't stand it as I can't touch the edge of the screen.

I bought my Galaxy S 4G today and also bought the black gel case because on the packaging it said "Galaxy S 4G". So dummy me thought it was different then The vibrant, but it is'nt. They are the same. I dont have the problem you do with the case being tight with either one.

The clear one with the black sides. I had one on my Vibrant and loved it, especially for showing off phone skins from skinit.com and for propping it up as my alarm clock at night (thank you Screen Filter and Lightning Bug )

I went into the store and exchanged the raspberry case for the one you mentioned - I love how it feels in my hand!
Glad you like it! It does feel good and the best part imo (like i said before) it doesn't block the screen edges at all.
I subscribed to otterbox for details as to when we would be able to buy a case for our phones, and today I finally got the message.... http://www.otterbox.com/samsung-galaxy-s-2-skyrocket-cases/samsung-galaxy-s-2-skyrocket-cases,default,sc.html http://www.otterbox.com/samsung-galaxy-s-2-skyrocket-cases/samsung-galaxy-s-2-skyrocket-cases,default,sc.html
the prices are not too bad either..the only truly pricey one is the one with the clip (which I am getting)...but they are running a sale today for 15% off and a 5% donation to troops! bought my defender series today...hope it don't take too long to ship!

I went to the Otterbox site yesterday looking for a Defender. When I first clicked on the Defender for Skyrocket link, I saw an "add to cart" link. During the page load, it disappeared and the "click here and we'll email you when it's available" link showed up. Tried several times to try to get the add2cart link again but could not. Or, if you don't mind a little added thickness, there's the PowerSkin. Basically doubles the battery life, and it's Lithium-Polymer =O.......
For the price of an Otterbox, you can get one of these for $20 more on Amazon.
For fock sake, will an admin PLEASE verify me so I can post links. XDA -- stop the fascism.

I bought the Powerskin when I got the phone. It does add bulk to the phone but what is really annoying is that the Skyrocket thinks it's plugged into a dock. The dock screen comes up automatically and all calls get answered in speaker phone mode. You have to switch the call back to handset once you answer the call.
The skyrocket doesn't exhibit this behavior when I connect and external battery like tbe Zagg Spark or a Brookstone external battery.
So far I have not been able to stop the dock mode from launching.

I'm guessing you haven't watched the demo vids for the Defender series case.
The belt clip also functions as the kickstand.
At least it better or I will raise hell for false advertising.
I thought this too but for the life of me could not figure out how it worked.

It seems odd, like it locks when you open the belt clip so far.
Hopefully it works well and doesn't create issues.

I received my defender this week, and while I'm very happy with the quality of the case, the "stand" included with the belt clip leaves a lot to be desired. When I lock it open and try to stand the phone up in landscape orientation, it falls flat on it's face, as it isn't tilted back far enough to get over it's own center of gravity. Laying it down in landscape works, but that doesn't put it at much of an angle.
The same goes for using the stand in portrait mode - it falls backwards, instead.
That said, I love everything else about the case. It doubles the size of the phone, and adds a bit of weight, but for my giant hands and butterfingers it's perfect. The silicone is grippy but not sticky, and although I haven't dropped it yet, I'm confident that the case will protect its precious cargo when I inevitably do.
*edit:
Everything I wrote above is wrong. I had the clip vertical when I tried to use the stand, as I keep the phone in landscape orientation when its clipped too my belt. It turns out that if you put the clip "sideways" as if you were going to clip the phone to your belt in portrait mode, and then lock it open, it works perfectly in landscape mode.
And I just double checked the portrait mode stability: it seems that the phone will stand up on the coffee table in front of me, but its still precarious. Touching the top half of the screen causes it to topple backwards.

I got the Defender at when I got the Gtab 8.9 LTE and free Skyrocket. Told my rep I wasn't paying $50 and she discounted it 25% which was better but I wanted her to give it to me free considering I was dropping $500 on the Gtab.
I like the case but it isn't nearly as rugged as my Ballistic case for my Infuse but it is significantly smaller than the Ballistic. I just realized that the clip on the back was for propping it up. I was wondering why it clipped open??? Duh! Anyway I took a couple of pics for those of you on the fence about this case I like it and it seems like it will definitely protect the phone adequately. The rubber surround is a real pain to put back on properly that was the only glaring thing.
Anybody know what the case shown in this video here is, or where to get it?

At 0.06 when he opens it up you can see 'D3O' on the inside of the cover.
That is a nice case.

That looks amazing! I always missed my blackberry for auto turning on/off when you put it in/out of the holster. I thought that was some sort of patented hardware feature because nothing other than the ipad smart cover does anything similar. Want this case badly! Anyone know where to buy?
Nexus 7 has magnetic sleep/wake, but I have run magnets all over the Nexus 4 and have not found a spot where it sleeps so I don't know how this is working in this video.
Perhaps they are using an app that is using the proximity sensor?
Possible leak of a Tech21 Impact Snap w/ Cover? Seems like it to me. Check out videos for the SGS3 and iphone 5, very similar.
If a D30 case comes out for the N4, I will most likely snag one. That seems like a pretty nifty case. It seems that he may be using an app that uses the phone's proximity sensor to turn the phone on and off when it's covered. I used to use that app when I had the N1 and HD2. It works like a charm, but uses a lot of battery.
That's a nice case. Been looking for a clean looking flip case myself.
I'm very interested in this. It's the only kind of case that intrigues me at all.
I'm guessing it's the d3o case for the gs3. It fits, but the button placement is a touch off, and you have 2 extra holes on the back.

I just picked up this case and really like it. And I had a screen protector on already so I popped out the otter box one. Seeing how it distorts the screen. Does everyone do this? Does it not protect it as much from drops? What's the downside?

I did the same thing. And I asked the same question before I did it. It hurts nothing the one thing is dust may get in easier but hey you cares lol. Ive dropped mine twice since popping it out and so far so good. 1 drop from waist height, not secured in the holster :banghead: second drop from like 4 inches. All in all I love the defender plus they dont add a lot to the phone like the old defenders did.

I just took mine off and i think its better cause i constantly change cases. The only reason im not using the defender too much is because the proximity sensor doesnt function that well. Do you guys experience taking a call and when you are about to end it and take it off your ear the screen does not come back on? I had to press the home button just to make sure the call has ended. Kinda sucks cause i love the case.

Picked it up heavily discounted with my gift card I never used. All black was the first one they brought out from the back and its the one I wanted anyways. I have a cheap clear screen protector on (since I got the phone day 1) and the original defender case. Being a mechanic, I'd rather have protects from stains, grease, or any spills etc. than have a little noticeably clearer screen. Its also good cause If I decide to use a different case then I have a protector on it still. Love it so far.
I haven't experienced the "bubbles" people say I would get cause they never appeared. Probably cause this one is a very thin protector unlike some of the more expensive ones. Would recommend over Commuter series anyday, but if you just pop the defender screen off why wouldn't you guys just go with the commuter? Its cheaper and you are butchering a product meant for heavy abuse.
Because It still has more protection without screen protector from drops. Its a layered case with shock absorber.

It's only one small magnet, the size of an eraser. It's underneath the elastic handle. Rub your fingernail over the area and you'll slowly find a circular outline. Took 30 seconds to remove!
Sorry, I actually have the other moko case without the hand strap. The faux leather smart cover that looks similar to the poetic slim case. I found the sleep/wake magnets over the middle left side of the screen and removed them but the cover still sleep/wakes my screen. Don't understand how and why unless I missed some magnets

drag a magnet over the case and you should be able to find it.
may i ask why you want to remove it? the only tablet I've used that has a functional sleep cover has been my nook hd+. ipad and gn10.1 would have unusual drain when using it. my 500t has issues with waking up from sleep (all atom wintabs seem to) so i got rid of that magnet. never did get a case with a magnet for my 700t.

There are a number of threads on various forums concerning the Note 8 screen becoming dead to tactile input where the magnetic field of the cover is located. Interestingly, this has been noticed with the official Samsung book cover case.
What I have found using a Poetic case that has a metal (but not magnetic) clasp to keep the cover in the closed position activates the Note 8's sleep and wakeup modes just fine.
