[Q] Galaxy S 4G (SGH-T959V) Data Speed HELP! - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Hi,
I have a Samsung Galaxy S 4G (SGH-T959V). I have a 4G plan from T-Mobile and I’m in an excellent 4G coverage area. My Galaxy S 4G was working with 4G data speeds up until the point where I flashed cyanogenmod 9 for my phone. (Yes, it was the correct version for my phone). The problem is that it is no longer working with 4G data speeds. It is always showing Edge network and its really slow speed. (I’m once again in a great 4G area). Can anyone help me out here as to what I should do? Also if you know the H symbol next to the data signal on the phone what speed is that indicating?
Thank You!

Try a different modem. We have something like 17 different options, and they all work differently for different people.
And H is the ICS+ version of 4G.

Oh thank you for explaining what the H means. However i don't exactly understand the modem thing. What is a modem and what does it do? Which one would be the best one for me or how would I know? Please tell me.
Thank You!

I responded with vague generalities to your general thread, since it was obviously designed for general responses, not specific help. Since this is the help forum, I'll give you a link to FBis251's great forum thread. Unzip the "all_padded_modems" zip file to your sd card and pick a file to flash. See how well it works. Choose another or keep the one you tried. Repeat until you like your mobile network speeds, display, and wifi.

H means 4g try flashing this and it will change the icons to 4g

Sensation with Android revolution no 4g?

Hey everyone, I have a Tmo Sensation 4g. I took all the proper steps to root the phone and wiped my stock rom off before flashing the Android Revolution 3.3 HD rom as well as changed to the radio that he recommended. However, it seems that my 4g is not available. Prior to flashing I had 4g nearly everywhere and now I only have 3g. Anyone have the same problem? Is there a fix?

Should post in Q&A but check the area that talks about RIL's and install the one that is ends in 169. I don't have any problems with my TMUSA sensation with this rom and also check if you get the H that is also a symbol for 4G
Thank you for the assistance, but where do I find this section about RIL's? I cant seem to see that term.

hehe.. This is because T-Mobile lies and puts a 4G icon when you have 3G.
Don't be dumb, this is not development. Your phone is 4G, 4G is 3g but it's just tmobile advertising there 4th generation connection. You get faster download speeds on 4G but on euro build roms they only have 3g. You should get a H logo when you are using data such as downloading, browsing the Internet ect. Which H stands for hsap + which is 4G. Sorry to be so mean it's just a very old topic just should of been posted in q and a not here.
Sent from my Sensation running Leedroid Sensational 2.3
Seriously, the 4g icon and the H icon, are just that.. Icons used to represent your data speed. It is not your actual data speed. If I wanted to I can create a mod that will replace the icon to Edge to represent 4G speeds, but it won't mean I'll be on edge.

T-mobile HTC sensation signal problems

I need help, I'm already desperate...
Got a T-mobile HTC sensation, it was already unlocked for other carriers but no S-off or unlocked bootloader.
I got an S-off, unlocked the bootloader, changed CID, flashed Android Revolution HD 6.7.2, but I have HORRIBLE signal reception. So I found that update file in the header which said "- HTC Sensation 4G (U.S. T-Mobile PG5810000 | T-MOB010) users can flash this for better signal and data speeds!" I installed it... NO IMPROVEMENT, my last hope is flash a different radio. Anybody knows what's the problem and how to fix it?
configs right now
different carrier sim (not t-mobile)
S-off, unlocked loader
HBOOT: 1.27.11111
Radio: Radio_11.76A.3504.00P_11.24A.3504.31_M
cid changed to 1111111
firmware: 3.33
ROM right now: is the XE version with beats (tried 1.2.2 too, no change)
Kernel: faux
EDIT: just found out that my wifi is not working either, tried the boot.img fix, didn't help. I get Wifi for a brief second and if I managed to connect it will stay for a while, but if I don't no wifi after that.

Have you tried a different kernel? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1269247 (maybe its for AOSP only though)
Sensation Kernel Update (different and more recent than above): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1256668
Different (userfriendly) radios? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459767
Remember to make a backup before install.
yes I have tried 2-3 kernels, including Bricked.
and I have changed 7-8 different radios/firmwares
P.S. fixed wifi with WiFix, at least this 2 issues are not connected
Greetings. I'm taking a stab at asking my question here because it seems sort of related.
I'm a T-mobile USA customer with a brand new SIM card in my Sensation 4g that I bought a few months ago.
My bootloader is unlocked, I'm S-off, I've flashed the custom firmware (version: 3.32.401.3) that was recommended for those flashing the Cyanogenmod 9 ROM. I'm currently using the most recent STABLE Cyanogenmod 9 ROM (not 9.1, but the STABLE 9 ROM). I'm using the stock Cyanogenmod 9 kernel (the one that came with the ROM: 3.0.26-g7290c7f). I never bothered to flash a new radio, not sure if that's a mistake or not.
My reception is good but it seems rather obvious that my phone is completely unable to hook up to or unaware of the 4g network. When downloading, the icon in the taskbar always shows either "3g" or "H" and when I check the "Status" in "About Phone" my "Mobile Network Type" is always listed as UMTS:3 or HSDPA:9.
Can anyone make any suggestions for how I might begin the trouble shooting process to remedy this issue. Thank you in advance for any sage like advice you might provide, I'm pretty lost here.

H is good. It means you are on an HSDPA network. That's 4G for the purposes of this conversation (though what really constitutes 4G is a little more involved)
HSDPA:9 might just be the best speeds that are available in your area. For instance 8 is the best I can get at my house. No amount of better phones will fix that. It's just what's available from the tower.

That's helpful thank you. One last question in the interest of clarification. Should I find myself in an HSPA+ reception area, should I expect the information over the reception bars to change from 3g to 4g and would "Mobile Network Type" then reflect HSPA+ as opposed to HSDPA 9?
Just curious so I might know what to look for when crossing into better network areas.
Thanks again for the tip.
The H means 4g technically. You can update your radio and ril very easily. Will find links and edit post

Thanks for the link. I guess what I was wondering is whether or not I actually need to update my radio, I'd feel a lot more confident in my reception if I ever saw HSPA+ listed in my phone's "Mobile Network Type", but I never do. I had previously thought that HSDPA was 3G, but maybe I'm missing something.
Thanks for the link, flashing a new radio is something I had been giving consideration, I'm just wondering how user friendly the process is. Like picking a needle out of a haystack, or is there someway to narrow down what radio/ril combo is best for one's phone/network.
I'll read through the thread for the link you posted and update my progress here later. Thanks for the info.

your data connection will still say 3G, unless you start to use the data then it will automatically switch to 4G/H (saves battery this way)
HTC made a fault with the Sensation with building the antennas into the back case (hand over the back of the phone = small loss of reception)
Theres a program called getRIL in the play store. You can update your radio and ril as long as your root. Which i assume u are. I do it thep old fasion way though.

[Q] Flashing T-Mobile radio onto at&t skyrocket

I have a rooted and unlocked at&t skyrocket on jellybean 4.1.2 with very slow speeds, so I tried flashing the radios UCMC1 and UXUMA7 through cwm and nothing has changed. After messing with the APN settings a little my data is no longer working. It shows the bars but I can't get a connection. I have broken my back googling and searching forums on this matter but I can't seem to figure this out.
I just flashed the radio UVLI1 in the hopes that I wouldn't have to post this but now my bars are gone and have been replaced with a slashed circle. Any help please?
Edit: I flashed back to UCMC1 with the bars showing but still no data. Also, I just realized this should be in the Q&A but don't know how to delete the thread so I could post there instead.
1st , Welcome to xda
2nd , it is good that you're aware that it's the wrong place to ask , it should be in the Q and A section here :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1401
3rd , you have to know what T-Mobile is using in your area ,
If LTE is rolled out , UCMC1 should work perfectly fine , since stock Skyrocket radios use 1700/2100 AWS bands for LTE (use this apn : fast.t-mobile.com)
If not , try one of the those radios :
Blaze 4G
Hercules T989
Or Galaxy Note T-Mobile (not so sure about this one) ...
Use this apn : epc.t-mobile.com
Search for those radio zips and make sure they are Jelly Bean compatible radio , or else they will not work with stock Skyrocket JB rom ... Always be careful when messing with radio , it can corrupt your device IMEI and/or brick it , make sure the radio you use is safe when used with Skyrocket..
Hope that helps...
And by the way , there are tons of infos on the stikies you should look at here

Thanks for the suggested radios. And apologies for that double post in the Q&A, I thought this thread would be locked/deleted because of the sticky in this section.
I figured out that changing the APN type was what caused me to lose the edge data, because I had changed it from default, supl, mms to internet + mms since I had seen that in another thread. Changing it back restored the edge.
By the way, I had obtained the aforementioned radios from here.

I tried flashing the Bell I757 from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2312596 but again no change in speed. I also tried flashing the UVMB1 Blaze radio from http://goo.im/devs/Void_Dweller/T769-UVMB1_modem.zip and I'm still on edge. Am I missing something here? Thanks again.
Set a new APN as :
Name : T-Mobile
APN : epc.t-mobile.com
Leave everything else and hit menu, save.
Select this APN
And you didn't answer about what service T-Mobile is providing in your area... If UCMC1,I757MUGMC3 or blaze radios didn't get you to at least 3G speeds then you have a problem somewhere else...

I did as you said with the APN but it seems l do not get any connection at all despite the bars being present, so I have to have the APN type at the bottom as default, supl, mms for the data to work.
I checked T-Mobile's website and it looks like I'm in the area with 2G with some spotty "satisfactory" signal strength areas. I would think that even with 2G that I'd get more than 0.04 Mbps download and 0.03 Mbps upload according to the speedtest app. Is there nothing I can do?
Asking somebody who's using T-Mobile in your area (a neighbor or a colleague) is better than just relying on the T-Mobile coverage map... And if you're sure that your area only gets 2G , use the stock JB UCMC1 radio and live happily with the 0.04 mb down you're getting... I would look to another carrier in such a case...

Ok, my only concern is that when I do change to another carrier in the future, would I experience slower data or data problems since I've already flashed a different radio? Would I have to flash back to the original one? I'm looking at this radio here for the original: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20157930
Thanks.
Man that's very basic stuff of course you can always flash whatever you want, including radios...
Having the skyrocket you're ofcourse limited to the 2 gsm networks in the states, T-Mobile or att (and their mvno's like Straighttalk, red pocket or such)... If T-Mobile is not good around you ,you have no choice other than at&t and in such a case flash the latest stock radio at that moment.. Now it's the ucmc1.. Use this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2228292
[RADIO][UCMC1] For I727/I727R [09-APR-2013]
You're lucky not to be flamed for those basic questions, but be careful next time, there are really awful members around here who have no basic attitude or respect what so ever....
OP, i noticed that going into the carrier settings and manually choosing at&t instead of automatic has fixed this for me using a t-mobile straight talk connection....see if it works for you
I am using the at&t skyrocket on tmobile as well and find the samsung note modem to work the best leaving the apn settings alone.
T879UVLG3
Also make sure you check data roaming.

sure it does if when doing your research like I did on mine I see it works on Band 4 which is T-Mobiles band for LTE. I get speeds up to 36dl and 19up with my ONe.
What are your speeds? Does your wifes Nexus show H+ and 3g symbols?

But I think I got it figured out - You are right it works in LTE - when i had 4G on screen i used the app you send me link for and that app shows LTE as network. So the bottom line is that 4G stands for LTE in stock rom and it is possible that Nexus has a stronger radio than One so in some areas i do not get LTE.
Anyway Thanks a Lot for your help - got a little worried ( Got the phone just yesterday). I think i will keep it stock for a little while before i will root it
The radio performance seems the same for me as my N5, I'm living in NYC.
Do note that "LTE" on a Nexus 5 is displayed as"4G" on the OnePlus One. Ensure that your APN is on T-Mobile 4G LTE IPv6 (fast.t-mobile.com), for some reason when I started my phone it was on MetroPCS instead.

nah root it its more fun that way and fyi they just came out with an update to 4.4.4 stock from what I have been reading. I saw this posted in earlier.... I guess you will be getting an update soon.
One suggestion if you plan on rooting and unlocking bootloader I suggest doing it now since it will wipe everything when rooting... There is a method where you wont lose data but it will not unlock your bootloader

To OP: How old is your SIM card? Have you ever received LTE signal on a previous device? I receive LTE on TMobile 4G perfectly fine, I just wish the "4G" showed up as "LTE" as my Nexus 5 did. I guess I could personally go skin it to say LTE instead but its just cosmetics.
And I completely agree with unlocking the bootloader, even if OP doesn't have any intentions to rooting/flashing, at least do it now so when you do decide to do it then you will be able to back everything up without having your device get wiped.
Edit: OP also go into dialer and type in *#*#4636#*#* then go into phone information -> scroll down -> under set preferred network type: LTE/GSM auto (PRL).

I thought the same thing (coming from a Nexus 5). I was worried that the OnePlus One did not support LTE but it definitely does. For some reason Cyanogen did not include a separate LTE icon as what's found on the Nexus 5 and most other LTE capable phones.

For sure its weird how they didn't adopt "LTE" and used "4G" instead. You can always go and change it to "LTE" with some apk hacking. Pretty easy to do.

So does your phone get "4G" now? You can verify in Settings -> About Phone -> Status -> Mobile network type -> should be LTE if the top right says "4G"
The best way to unlock/root is to NOT use a toolkit. Yeah a toolkit is easier, but honestly unlocking a bootloader is not hard and the skills you obtain by doing it yourself are important. You won't lose warranty, you can always relock it and use the bit mod and OnePlus will never know. Plus OnePlus encourages the whole custom rom scene since thats why they have a Development forum on their official forums.

I called AT&T to have the IMEI changed over to the OPO since I was on the Nexus5. CyanogenMod doesn't technically come with LTE icon, personally I can careless but it does look nice at top lol. And you're correct on my device under Mobile Network Type it shows LTE but icon on top shows 4G.
4G is LTE
H+ is HSPA+
3G is ... 3G
edge is edge :crying:
The first speed test in my sig is my LTE speeds using my OPO... Pretty typical, maybe a little faster than my old Galaxy Note 2. :good:
how does one change it to the LTE symbol?
I'm just curious. If you know 4G means LTE, whats the difference if it says LTE? Not trying to be an A-hole...just curious.
If you run the CM11 nightlies on the OnePlus One the phone will show LTE in an LTE area. Only the stock CM11S shows LTE as 4G.
I would think that people on xda are more well informed.
Carriers like to change the official terms to make you "buy" into a "technological" leap.
Most of the roms outside North America uses 4G (instead of LTE). This is all about marketing.
HSPA(+) are 3rd generation networks while LTE is the 4th generation.
back in the day:
iPhone = edge speed 2.75G
iPhone 3G = HSPA 3G (7.2) speed
iPhone 4 = HSPA+ 3.5G (carriers in north america tried really hard to change this to 4G)
iPhone 5 = LTE 4G
See this article (how At&t tried to play this game)
search on google as i m not able to post links yet.

I agree fully with Line 1 - especially here we should do more homework before posting...
my oneplus signal is terrible compared to my n5
Sent from my One using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
mine is better then g2. Do note that your phone may or may not have the bands your provider has for lte. This you should have checked before you got the phone.
Also delete apn and reboot.
If it works better something went wrong there. If it doesnt check your providers website if setings are all correct.
If they are you might need a new sim/ or lte enabled via your provider.

Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE Sprint Question

Greetings,
I have a the above mentioned phone on the Sprint US network.
A friend of mine on Sprint recently got a letter stating that they will be shutting down their 4G WiMax while they do upgrades and focus on 4G LTE. It is a stupid question, probably, but will this impact my phone's ability to get 4G and/or LTE?
Also, I am running Cyanogen Mod 12.1... I saw before something about builds for ms8960 and then now it seems it is going back to xt879/c. I have been downloading the Cyanogen for xt897, is this the correct one for this phone? Because I also see a download for xt897c, but I do not know the difference... other than CM is at 10 for the C and 12.1 for the xt897.
Every new version I will wipe the phone and do a clean install of CM... I created a custom boot animation and flashed the bootlogo.bin, so I know how to use ADB and a little bit of the shell...
I am also wondering though, about this f2fs file system... I wiped the data and cache and gave every possible partition the f2fs. Then I read something about zcache not working correctly or not using f2fs? I'm a little confused. Can someone clarify this?
Sorry for so many questions but I can't find this info through the searches. Or rather I can't make sense of it either. If there is any other information for me to supply just ask, and I will gladly provide it.
Thanks in advance!
The Q is not capable of WiMax, so you have nothing to worry about.
As for your other questions, they are pretty much all answered in the CM thread.

Thank you sir! That is reassuring that I don't have to get a new phone come November. And that also means their 4G LTE coverage will be improved so I should have faster network speeds eh? And clearer calls? Will this phone be able to make "HD" calls using the LTE?
Sorry for the follow up but maybe I'm just dense as I didn't really ascertain the answers... could you point me to the right thread? I know there's the 12.1 and then the [Q&A]... would this be a better place to ask?
I'm also curious about the Mobile Networks settings. Is there a primer somewhere on this? I want to know what I should select as the preferred network type... I'm in the San Diego market and I want to make use of LTE when it's available but I only ever seem to get 3G... also I have data roaming and all that included so is it possible the you can have the phone elect to use another carrier's LTE if available over Sprint's 3G? Does it matter which option I select in the preferred networks list - i.e. if I pick something with GSM and the phone doesn't do GSM will it ignore my preference and choose what works? I also don't know the difference between the CDMA Subscription RUIM/SIM vs. NV. I have seen the question asked but didn't find the answer.
Thanks again, any help is appreciated, even if it's just a link or something general. I just want to do the best to get the best network experience with this phone.
Thanks!

I would ensure everything works network-wise on stock before flashing CM. If it doesn't work on stock, get the provisioning etc sorted before going to CM.

Thank you and that's good advice my friend, but the horse is waaaaayyy outta the barn on that one. I've been using CM now since 10. Now on to 12 which is going ok. Has its issues but most of the time (when at home or near a reliable LTE signal) things work alright!
