Sammy GS4 after Google GS4.. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 General

So the holy grail of rumors turned out to be true. What does that mean now for Samsung TouchWiz'd S4's
Does that mean that once the boatloader has been unlocked, we can flash a copy of Stock Android 4.2?
I'm wondering because I can buy the Sammy S4 right now, and flash once I it becomes available.
I'm going to be getting a subsidized Sammy S4, so its cheaper..unless of course I can buy the Google S4 on AT&T subsidized and just never have to worry about it..
But I don't know if thats going to be possible..plus we have to wait till June 26th for the Google S4 anyways so....

i doubt we'll be able to get the google s4 subsidized through at&t...i spoke to a at&t rep the other day and they said the same thing. looking at the nexus 4 was handled i guess it makes sense, although that was a much cheaper phone. it sounds like though, along with the upcoming bootloader unlock, either phone (assuming completely identical hardware) will be just as capable as the other in terms of modding. correct me if im wrong!

S3 now or waiting for S4?

I am up for a new phone with my provider.
So I am wondering should I get the S3 now or should I wait for the next phone from Samsung.
I read abotu rumors that the S4 might be pulled up to go on sale with the iPhone 5.
Though based on track recrod I doubt to see a S3 successor prior to July 2013 (if not later).
Currently I have a Samsung Infuse (AT&T) and I am quite happy with it.
What are your thoughts?
the chance of samsung releasing the S4 anytime before june/july of 2013, is about .00000000000000001%. The S3 is by far the best phone on the market right now, and its worth getting. You also have to release that in the phone world, there's always something rumored to be 'better' right around the corner, so you might as well get it now, because otherwise you'll be waiting forever.

Agreed I don't see it being released any sooner than 2013 and being that this is the best thing available I would pick it up while you can

Thanks,
that goes in line with my thoughts.
P.S.: Just relaized this was the Verizon version... Posted the same in AT&T as this is the right corner for me...
As a computer enthusiast, I'll tell you that you don't wait for tech unless it's maybe 1 month away at most. Get it now, it is mostly overkill for what 95% of people use it for anyways.
WTF? This phone just came out like 2 weeks ago. It will be a year before the SGSIV comes out.
If you're eligible for an upgrade now, and you like the SGSIII, then get it.
If you don't like the SGSIII, get something else. Don't just sit around and wait for a year for the next version of a phone you don't even like.
I'm really curious to hear from where this rumor came from. A dollar on that it starts with, "my friend told me..." or "my dad works at Nintendo and he said....".

GS3 is already one of the (if not THE) top selling smartphone of all time. Samsung would A) lose a lot in their marketing campaign on it along with all the sales that would have still been pulling from it being a new phone and B) piss off EVERY SINGLE PERSON who bought an S3 because now their phone is moot point (which as part A states, is a sh*t ton of people). Why is there even a poll on this? Should I buy an iphone 5 or an iphone 6? Lol.....
I'm also very curious as to where someone would try and post that the S4 is being released soon.......

He said the next Samsung phone rumored to be the S4. Im guessing he just added the S4 part himself assuming the next top Samsung phone will be that. The phone that Im guessing he heard about that will be released soon is the Note 2. Unless you want a 5.5in screen get the S3.
op, GET THE GS3!!! Its by far the best device that I have owned by leaps and bounds....main reason, it just plain works! Great signal, battery life, gps, speaker, camera, a plethora of ram, beautiful screen, and smooth as a babies arse!!
Wait for the iPhone 5. If it truly is better than the galaxy s3-which I highly doubt-then get it. If not, get the s3.

srly just get the S3 unless you want to wait another year (assuming there are no delays...) to get a new phone
You're going to be waiting a long time for an S4...
S4 appear take a very long time, how it functions, to be used only after know,I still very confident of Samsung mobile phones.
Eh, the S7 will be out before you know it, so I'd just wait it out.

Well becuase he used the word iphone, I would say he should wait for apple as well. Now Motorola to me is trash, because the OTA 100% stock GB to ICS update killed flash player.( And they would not fix it)
I had more issue's with them/my Razr, but any way's. I think he should get a S3 unless he likes apple/want's smaller screen or what ever.

Is the Verizon GS3 still worth getting?

I was going to get this phone when it launched but gave up due to the locked bootloader issue. Now that is resolved and there are JB rom's out as well.
But now the next Nexus is probably only 2 months away and will likely ship with Key Lime Pie. Would you get this phone today, or wait?
If you're fine with your Nexus wait for the next one Imo

Only for Android
Nexus devices and manufacturer devices are 2 different monsters. To ask if the SGS3 is still worth getting it really the wrong question to ask. It is the best phone out right now so how would it not be worth getting?
If the latest software is your thing which I thought was mine until I owned the GNEX and realized how many problems that phone had, then maybe wait to see what the next Nexus device has to offer. Even then, the S3 will still be one of the top dogs for Android I am sure.
The S3 is an amazing device and I am happy I made the switch to it. S3 with ICS is better then my GNEX was with JB. Even with the great software it had on it it did not fix the terrible camera, horrible screen, bad radio's and horrific battery life.

One good thing about the Note though is it should stop a lot more people from texting and driving : )
I'd go for the SGIII, feature wise and development wise it's going to be one of the best phones for a while IMO.

The Note II is not an option
I'm just a little worried that the phone development may not be as active as the other GS3 versions or the Nexus, or that VZW might find a way to lock it down again.

If I were you I would wait for the next Nexus phone, since you know the development is gonna be huge. I really wanted to wait for the next Nexus, but I lost patience and got the S3. Having said that the S3 is a beast of a phone, I love it. But again if you can wait then the best bet would be to get the next Nexus.
I think ur safe either way, the Nexus always has great development but I had a terrible experience with the Galaxy Nexus, so I can't see going to another Nexus device. Even when it comes out I can't see it being any better than the S3, I picture it basically being the S3 with aosp android
Look at it like this, the Galaxy Nexus was still made by Samsung, as you seen from the lastest Nexus they weren't willing to give up the best features like camera and processers. I'm sure they are not going to give google the best features making the s3 obsolete. When the Nexus came out the s2 was still just as good if not better to be honest.
The software was the big difference between the Nexus and S2. Once the S3 gets Jelly Bean... Oh damn
10 million and counting
With the number of GS3's sold and the popularity of the ROM's (judged by post activity, download activity, etc) I would say that development for the GS3 will continue for some time. The hardware is certainly there to support it. With the unlocked bootloader there is nothing stopping the development from improving for at least the rest of this year if not into 2013. You will be happy with this phone or I'll eat my hat.
Yeah unless you are really after AOSP I would get the S3. It's a great phone and I highly doubt the next Nexus will have much better, if better at all, specs. The nexus phones don't tend to be next gen spec wise just newest software and pure AOSP builds.
The S3 is the best phone on VZW, has Verizon officially confirmed it will be carrying the next Nexus?
Google just released JB and only 1 phone has it officially and you're saying they're going to ship a phone in 2 months with KLP on it? Where do people get this stuff? Jesus.

Samsung Galaxy S4 (Google Edition)

This will be the phone of my dreams. Will be getting it when it comes out. Will you? :good:

It's nice but the price is a nightmare.
Paying Samsung 650 to unlock and run AOSP on S4.. That's how I see it.
The Google edition samsung galaxy s4 seems a little garbage to me. Why does it have capactive buttons instead of onscreen buttons, hence ruining the "nexus" experience.
Since it has LTE I bet its the qualcomm snapdragon processor, which means aosp roms for snapdragon S4s will be quite stable but exynos one will still have problems.
Anyone wanting a "pure" stock experience better get a nexus 4 or nexus 10.
price is the only problem
I still wonder why onboard storage is so low. Yes, I understand that you can use a SD which can get pretty big, but wouldn't it be better to have more than just 16GB for developers?
Why didn't they just upgrade the damn nexus 4 with LTE. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

High compared to what? If you look at what an unsubsidised, unlocked, off-contract S4 costs in the US, it's $629. The Google version is only $20 more, and that's probably not too bad considering that you should get OS version updates around the same time as the Nexus phones, not 6-12 months later.
If you're comparing the price to what you pay on a contract, of course it's more expensive. When you buy the phone on contract, the carrier pays part of the price because they know they can suck money out of you and you're contractually obliged to keep paying them. You win, but you also lose.
to everyone complaining about a 649 price tag, the GS4 of both variants (exynos and snapdragon) here in australia are like, 699 dollars outright unlocked at the cheapest....
I really don't think the price is that terrible. The S4 is a top of the line device that was not built with keeping the price down in mind. What's going to be stopping people though from just buying a regular S4 on contract or cheaper used then just waiting for this one to come out. Samsung is more than likely going to be providing the drivers therefore that could be of help to such AOSP roms like CM.
I wonder if it would be possible to just put the stock firmware on to carrier purchased S4 and receive updates straight from google that way. I think that should be possible considering the hardware is exactly the same.
everything is ok , just about the high price
Times they are a changin' folks. The days of carrier subsidized phones could be near. Soon we'll have a better feel for what the consumer will pay for a smartphone. This will put the hurt on phone manufacturers to set realistic price and profit margins.
i suspect the S4 Google Edition's initial unlocked price has more to do with taking advantage of bleeding edge, must have, first adopters. You know who you are. Knock yourselves out.
Uhh, $650 is about the price for an unsubsidized, unlocked premium phone. You Nexus folk are a little spoiled with Google selling you phones at wholesale price. GSM carriers would flip if Google sold the S4, wholesale.
It came as a big surprise when Google announced this, but it's an interesting move. I kinda wish they just upgraded the Nexus 4 though... LTE and more storage (or SD slot) and it would be the perfect phone.

native AOSP without voiding any warranties, with over the air updates that come earlier than any other S4 updates and no chance for bricking and probably a further 6 months or so of native (i.e. none/very few of the bugs) updates after samsung gives up on the S4

I just bought the nexus5 and i love it. It's stock android is amazing , and the screen colour is very natural.

Galaxy S5 will be saddled with Touchwiz. Even the recent 'leaks' of what might be the new Touchwiz were pretty gawd-awful to me. It will be significantly more expensive than the Nexus 5 unlocked, and will be locked down hard on AT&T and Verizon. Bigger than 5" screen is a non-starter for me. N5 is just about perfect size for me. It will probably have a better camera app but the individual pixels on the sensor are going to be tiny, probably leading to fairly poor low light performance. S5 will probably have a larger battery, but I doubt they'll be getting 3000+ mAh. Even if it gets Snapdragon 805, I doubt it will perform a ton better than the N5 due to software and TW 'feature' overload.
Coming from the DNA, s3, and note 2, absolutely not. The Samsung 4.3 ota locked the s3/note 2 hard. All new phones will ship this way.

megapixels don't matter by the way on a standard photo that 90% of people take, store, and share.
I have the S4 now and will be getting the n5 this week. The main reason i'm switching is because the galaxy series bootloaders are locked and no one has found a way to bypass them. I've been using safestrap but its not the same.

Same. Coming from a AT&T Galaxy S4 I can say this x100. Never again a Samsung product. The only S4 feature, and feature from the S5, is AMOLED, and for the S5 the 2K display. However the camera on the Nexus 5 is superior to the S4 I had, at least I get WAY better photos. I will never buy a Non-Nexus Android phone again. Although iPhone6 may tempt me.

and you guys are all looking at this wrong. this will be a great device as long as you purchase the unlocked/google play edition. no bootloader crap. as far as firmware goes, that can be changed. my rooted S4, with twrp and everything else this nexus has, including a superb aosp-based rom and kernel, was a thing of beauty. i expect some big power and solid support for the international and unlocked variants.

technically, any device that is 1920x1080 is "2K"...only like 80 pixels shy of it. close enough. tech industry should refer to higher spec displays as 2.5K, really.
Might do, depends how it's built. I'm already a bit bored of my Nexus 5 and I think Android is getting to a point where the leaps in software are less and less. I've even gone back to stock and relocked my bootloader I'm that happy with stock Android!
We'll see once it's released but never say never...one thing is us UK users won't face the same issues as you carrier-branded US users will as our bootloaders will be easy to sort out so that's a moot point over here

The S4 Google Play edition was not available on Google Play for almost 3 months since it was released. I bought my AT&T Branded one in late May 2013, and I believe July the Google Edition came out. So they aren't out right away. Likewise you have to judge a device by it's shipped firmware, as in some cases like the AT&T Galaxy S4, with the inability to downgrade firmware versions, if you're device shipped with "AMF3" firmware or newer, you're stuck because Loki was patched and you cannot get around the locked bootloader. With no guarantee of a Google Play Edition version, there may be no way around it. As the International version (Such as the I-9505) are not available for sale to consumers directly in the US, some people haven no choice but to use the carrier branded versions.
This is my first nexus phone ... i came from a galaxy s4 and i also love the nexus5. It's a phone that you can pratically say you will get the update exactly when it released from google.

there will be a GPE edition or at least an LTE-enabled unlocked variant. my comment on the shipped firmware and my entire response in general was aimed at this particular edition of the S5. if you're an international user or north american user with the unlocked LTE model, you wont be dealing with the bootloader issues and, again, the shipped OS wont matter. that can be changed.
I'm not interested in going back to Samsung devices. I spent too much time switching ROMs, trying to get an AOSP(ish) experience from my S3. There were always things that didn't work, and the battery life was sh*t as well. Since getting this phone I've stayed on the same ROM for ages, and it has no bugs. None. I don't have to waste my time any more. A 2k screen (even if it is AMOLED, which I love) and an extra gig of RAM isn't worth the trade-offs.

Opinion: S5 Tomorrow

Hello! I am highly considering getting the S5 tomorrow, I'll be using the at&t next plan which will actually save me money.
However I am on a rooted and flashed MDL S4 which I realize is amazing, since it's not de-qfused.
AT&T said I can get the S5 for a cheaper plan and $50 down, or I could trade in my S4 for $115 credit to cover it all. Should I still keep my S4 and pay the $50 and sell it individually? I think they're going for roughly $250+ still right?
I could also keep the S4 as a backup phone, since it is fully flashable on MDL. Does anyone think the S5 will eventually be flashable and rootable? The reason I am highly considering getting it is for the upgraded camera, as I use it the most. I've already played with a display model in-store and it's feels phenomenonal over the S4 in various ways.
Opinions people?

With the current state of locked S4's, I wouldn't count on the AT&T S5 seeing AOSP ROMs for a while if at all. If you don't want AOSP again until a new phone, then sell the S4. Otherwise, you could keep it around.
For me personally I don't think you will see the S5 rooted . Rumor mills have been churning out all variations of the device will have a locked bootloader . With that being said its possible for root to be achieved but in light of what has been seen in terms of progress on the S4 I wouldn't place money on it . Hell I could be proven wrong simply by typing that but but I doubt it . I have previously owned the S3 and S4 , Both phones were rooted and I absolutely loved them both . As carrier bloatware continues (AT&T) , I want a device I control not the carrier not the manufacturer . For the average user the S5 will more than likely be a very well equipped phone for "their" needs . With that being said , Samsung's actions in terms of locking down software has swayed me to either move to a Nexus device direct from Google . Or even possibly send me in the direction of HTC , which as a company has recorded losses so eh not sure about betting on that horse either . All of this is strictly my two cents .

Exactly. Welcome to the new Samsung. Trading my S4 for a Nexus 5 as soon as possible. I really miss 180Mb roms and 45Mb gapps. AOSP on any new locked bl Sammy is a pipe dream at this point.

The next plan is a high interest rip off better off paying $199 on a 2 year contract. In one year on next at something like $28 a month you're paying around $336 a year. I agree with rebel Att can have their locked bootloaders.

Having new phone is always beneficial, especially if it is iPhone 4s ...well I think iPhone is good set , I think you should go 50$ deal
