Hey,
I work for a large multinational(10000+ employees) that is doing the unthinkable and standardizing on iphones for all smartphones...up to now as long as you had an exchange compatible phone, it was ok....
Personally I wanted to get a new WP7 phone as I'm coming from WM.
There are possibilities around it on a case by case basis but I need some help from you guys with reasoning why the iphone would not be ideal for business(outside sales group)...
I use my wm phone right now mostly for email but also a lot for opening and modifying excel sheets and sometimes word sheets, PDF's, navigation and some audio(I use my zune HD now for that)...I don't believe with the new ios that it has native MS office integration, correct?
Any tips would be ideal so that at least I can continue with a wp7...
look for another job?
There is nothing you can do... no company will accept such a new platform as a standard, besides Dell? lol I don't know... there is PDF support, uhm exchange is there, flash will be there soon... there are devices with QWERTY keyboards(Dell Venue Pro), that might prove much more productive than a soft keyboard. WP7 is a much better business phone than iOS, however convincing that to people who who think iPhone has the most apps as pretty hard. I tried convincing some people that Android was more productive than iPhone, of course they laughed . Just present WP7 as a business phone with luxuries... another thing would be WP7 has a far more superior calendar system. Reason I wouldn't even try is because WP7 doesn't have multi-tasking or copy-paste, something I believe business users might need more than XBL :|
you don't have to convince them to send all their phones out as windows phone... just to allow you to use a windows phone correct? if that's the case, what do they see in the iPhone? do they rely on a particular application?
for the WP7 case... if your work place uses sharepoint (i'd imagine so given the numbers you showed), well WP out of the box supports that, has better office integration and functionality than any other mobile OS, even with their third party applications. Also, WP7 has exchange 2003 sp2, 2007, 2010 full support.
That in itself should be enough to say that WP can work for your work place. But yea, if there is a particular app that they need, or they created themselves... unless you're a dev and can reproduce it for WP, you may be out of luck.
So far I am actually liking the iOS better than WP7 after playing with the HD7 for 2-3 days... grrr...
Microsoft is determined to win the phone wars, or at least become one of the top 2-3 players. 500 million spent on advertising alone is no joke. I honestly think they will be pouring out updates for their OS.
As a long time Exchange admin, I'm not surprised about this. There's plenty of reason to go to iPhone--decent Exchange support, lots of apps, etc--and although those things will all eventually be true for Windows Phone 7, today only the first item is true. Right now, Windows Phone 7 is an untested platform. Can't say I blame them, though frankly I feel iOS is a very "last gen" OS compared to WP7. Still...it's a mature platform, and for business use, that's valuable.

ouw there are many things which dont work with eas + ios
http://blogs.technet.com/b/jribeiro...-windows-mobile-android-nokia-apple-palm.aspx
Also the iPhone dont have Office, but open office which you have to pay for.
So no reading docs on the go edit them and sending back.
At the Uni i work someone had the bright idea of having iphones as corp devices. They went right over my head and now when ever a iPhone goes wrong on exchange they have to send someone out to fix it.
The iPhone doesnt support everything that a windows phone does on exchange.
Lets face it WP7 sucks to, ok it does the basics but you still dont get Task sync and you need to have exchange 2010 to use all the options.
this is also a similar issue to Android. Android provides read only functionality to office facilities, even with third party applications (from what i'm aware). given this is built right into the phone, there is no added cost to the end user.
This is a clear example of what MS was talking about when they said that Android isn't really free. Sure the core is free, but to get the products that can match the quality and functionality of Windows Phone, you are really look at greater costs than what MS asks for.
Thanks guys...
Yeah, it's just to convince them for me...no chance for the company wide...I'd like to convince them for the people working for me as well but this seems unlikely although those guys probably look at getting an iphone as a coup...the decision, like many decisions at big companies, has little to do with logic and all to do with politics.
Some good info here guys...appreciate it.
I agree, right now windows phone is not even at wm level but one can assume it will be very soon.
For the iphone, do you know if those office apps allow you to edit documents?
eh, WP7 is fully intergrated with microsoft office, plus windows live ID. iOS is not. im guessing your company uses PC`s and windows rather than macs? if you want easier transitons for docs and editing them WP7 is the way to go. after all WP7 it dosnt need "an app for that"
I suspect the reason your company is moving to iPhone is because the nutjob who signs the cheque on the corporate phone strategy is an iPhone fanboi and what he says goes.
Corporate phones without a keyboard = EPIC FAIL.

I could not have said it better....my local IT person was completely perplexed by this decision...
Agree with the keyboard thing as well...for a personal phone I've no problem without a keyboard but when you are writing upwards of a 100 emails a day...virtual keyboards suck...
I guess, the worst case is you buy a WP7 SIM free, use your work SIM and connect to EAS just like the iPhones..... Unless you are not allowed to by policy - or they have locked anything down...!?
I am using WP7 Mozart on Orange for last 2/3 weeks. I was previusly using HTC Legend. The WP7 EAS and Outlook is very good. I have two EAS accounts and a Hotmail account all sync very well.

The only thing I'm not sure about is that currently with my winmo phone and work we use a certificate that is put in the root(actually 2 certificates) and from what I've read right now this is not officially supported with windows phone 7 although there are work arounds...if iphones don't offer that then I guess I'd be fine anyway....
For me I'll see what I can do as I have a zune pass and definitely want the phone even for that alone but I was really hoping to use the benefits of the cloud solution of windows phone with my team (sharepoint, office,etc...)...

so then it's carrier based software? but yea, it would then come down to manufacturer/carrier to put the added cost in somewhere to offer the same level that windows phone offers, but yes of course it can be done, not saying that, just saying that the cost will pop up somewhere, whether that be direct or not is a different story.
I'll start.
Groupme: This has to be the worst app that has ever been designed for any platform. I understand that it's in preview but i've emailed their support atleast 15 times. Not even one reply. What the hell guys? You guys are owned by Microsoft (skype) for gods sake.
They recently released an update and it doesn't even include a mango update. It just adds live tiles, which don't work. Not even once.
Every time i open the app i get "Push notification ChannelOpenFailed error occurred. This channel does not exist but could not be opened. Try opening the channel again. (-2129589901) 0"
I've reinstalled the app 3 times. I've emailed their support, i've contacted them on twitter. They're just ignoring everything about windows phone. This is unacceptable for a company that is owned by Microsoft.
I know some people are going to say this is just an app and you can use the group feature in mango. No, i can't. This app uses data and it works with smart phones as well as dumb phones (via sms). The group chat feature in mango doesn't allow the other people to respond back and talk to each other. This is key for me. I have a group with some people and we need to be able to communicate with each other.
It's things like this that make me want to drop windows phone.
I love windows phone (you can check my post history) but i am really pissed off now. I'm tired of waiting for things to improve. Mango is excellent but it's 2011 and the platform itself doesn't mean anything. It's all about the 3rd party apps.
I mean, look at whatsapp for android and ios and then check it for windows phone. They say they need more time to develop a decent app. Mango beta has been out for months. What's talking so long? Skype? Words with friends? Where are these apps? Is it lack of motivation cause of the 1% market share?
I am seriously considering android ice cream sandwich if google can get their act together and make android as smooth and reliable as my htc windows phone.
trust me...you will find other things to complain about once you switch. The problem I see alot is that people expected a perfect platform. I got bad news for you...there is no such thing. Not Apple, not Android, not WP.
Dude, I know how you feel.
I will be switching my WP7 in the next months. Unfortunately, it's just not the moment. I dont want iPhone 4S, I want iPhone 5. And Android just sucks.
I have no options at all ;/

Sorry, but i never said i expected a perfect platform and i believe windows phone is still the best operating system for any phone. It's the 3rd party apps that are killing it for me.
Microsoft has literally tried to bribe people to develop for them but there just doesn't seem to any interest in developing quality apps.
The core OS can only take you so far. But for what it's worth, i think wp is better than ios and android. But android seems it's better overall.
If something doesn't work you can customize it and fix it yourself.
I used to put a new energy rom on my windows mobile every time nrg came out with an update, so i have no problems putting in the effort and time it takes to tweak an OS. Unfortunately this isn't the case for 3rd party apps. Which is why android seems like a better choice for me.

This right here proves you're an idiot. You hate the OS and want to switch but will only switch if the OS you're considering switching too can be as good as your current OS. See how stupid that sounds? You come across as one of those miserable people that can have a million positives but one minor negative is the end of the world for you. You will never be happy with an OS.
It makes perfect sense if you read the complete post. I said multiple times that wp as an OS is superior but overall android seems better because of customization and 3rd party apps, but i'll have to see what they do with ice cream sandwich. I wouldn't switch to gingerbread.
What part of that are you having problem comprehending?

so you think all apps on other platforms didn't take months and came out perfect when launch...please.
You should know better you are an early adopter to a brand new platform and it will take yrs to refine the OS...just like android and iphone...who took even much longer to reach the current stage.
Yeah i definitely overestimated the brand name of Microsoft.
The only reason android and apple took so long was because times were different back then. It was a new idea and a new way of things. Now, Microsoft has had time to learn from them and should have played things differently. Mango is how the phone should have been released.
I mean, even now, most apps that come out are released for app store and market. Take any bank, or any commercial app. It's just those 2 platforms. Hell, even my local bar has an android/ios app.
There is no awareness of windows phone. It's a shame because it's such a great operating system and it has the potential to be number one.

Its been almost a year since WP7 came out. This lack of awareness was not their in case of ios and Android phones.. After an year of iPhone we HD basically all big names apps in the market ... Android was slow but at least people were aware of that os... After 1 yr noone knows what WP is.

WP got more competitions at launch than iphone & android. At launch who was iphone competitor? At launch who was Android competitor beside Iphone. With that said...I agreed MS needs to upper WP7 awareness....so far it's almost non-existent.

Haha, didn't take a year for iOS to have an app store?
Because of one apps and you blamed the whole OS.
Let's me ask you a question.
Are there any mobile OS that have better built-in Social Network support like Windows Phone? And how many Facebook users out there?
And return to the question: You know WP7 is a locked OS and you still bought it, and now you scream out loud and say it is stupid because it can't install 3rd Apps? So, look like you aren't a smart buyer.
if you want 3rd Apps so bad, why don't you register for the Developers Account, and get it unlocked so you can install custom .xap?

after i read this sentence, you are no more than a stupid guy to me.
So, let's me ask you a question, when you send a messege to a group, everyone in the group will receive the same messege. but do they know how many people (which one, what are their numbers...) that you send that messege? And Why do they have to send it back to you and x people in your group?
For an example, you have a group of 15 best friends and you decide to throw a party tonight. You texted the whole group and invite them to the party, some will say "yes", some will say "no", so, why the hell the guy said "yes" even care about the guys said "no"? And is it necessary for him to know about it?
If you want group communicate, i would suggest to visit them instead, or you can do group Skype or simple just create a group chat on PC. Why? Because everytime you send one messege to a group of x people, you have send x messege totally and believe me, if you don't use unlimited plan and you have a long season of group chat on your phone, you will not happy with your phone bill by the end of the month.
If what you said come true, there isn't necessary to have a group chat feature in Skype, Yahoo or Windows Live Messenger, which can be done for free and 100x better on PC.

so you mean you can't access Marketplace or what?
Or you don't understand the "3rd Party Apps"?
3rd Apps is the apps that developed by individual or company that is not associated with the OEM, like you can develop almost and .cab by your old Windows Mobile 6.5, and you can do the samething with Dev Unlocked Windows Phone 7.

It's fine to blame the OS. The Developers didn't make the OS have only 1/3rd the API support it needed to support a ton of apps on release.
Microsoft gave them the middle finger and they took it at face value. That's why they're prioritizing WP7 at such a low place right now.
Because iOS/Android sales more phones have more users. It's more advantageous for them to work on Honeycomb/ICS/iOS5 app updates then work on WP7 ports.
People on this forum can yell and scream "we need AppX" all day and all night, but when you get thousands of downloads in the Andorid/iOS App Markets per day and dozens per day in WP7 the choice is clear which one goes on the backburner.
Also, all decent Android phones from Samsung and HTC come with Social Integration. TW4 phones come with Twitter/Facebook/LinkedIn integration. Samsung did People Hub before Microsoft decided what to call it. That's nothing to rave about. It's actually kind of embarassing that they tried to market that as some sort of new and innovative feature. We've already gone over this before. Same for groups.
WP7 did do some innovative things with the way it allows you to pin sublets of Apps to the home screen, but a lot of the marketed built-in functionality already existed for years. The main selling point of the OS is the user experience, not the features.

i have a galaxy s2 with many free and paid apps on it. i wish to transfer ownership of the phone and all applications including paid ones to a friend so that he does not have to buy all the paid apps on it again.
i would think it is possible since i paid for use of them if i wish to give up use under my name and assign use to someone else using the same phone i should be able to. i cannot find a way to do this in play store or in appbrain.
does anyone have a clue how to do this or know where to point me for instructions?
i would have better luck contacting Abraham Lincoln than i would trying to contact google.
as it is the phone will probably try to self destruct once i change the gmail account it runs under so i want to have this in place in the stores so it can verify and re-get the apps if necessary without hassle since the stores would know that he owns the phone and apps..
any help would be greatly appreciated.

i want to hand him the phone set up for his account such that when he goes to do anything with play store or appbrain they will recognize the phone and all apps on it free and paid, as his.
It is not possible to transfer apps from one user to another. It isn't even possible to transfer them to a different Google account that you use.
Read the Google terms and conditions and you'll see this on there - nothing you can do about it.

no. i did that once a few years ago for someone i trusted. that person abused the trust and bought all kinds of expensive apps and used my gmail email account as their own. i had to close everything out and start fresh so i will never do that again.
there is no earthly reason why a phone and all its installed apps cannot be moved from one account to another except google's apparent need for control or laziness in coding the proper routines.

They may well use an Open-Source software for their devices, which is a fantastic thing, but they are a business and exist to make money. You don't 'own' the apps when you buy them - you are just getting the right to use them. Anything beyond that would be considered on-selling, even if you are making no money from it. Do you think that Apple would let you transfer apps to a different account? Or Microsoft for that matter?

when you pay for an app you pay for a license to use that app. there is no reason why you cannot transfer that license to another person as long as you give up all rights to use that license yourself. i have done this with many microsoft applications and they support it. or at least they did as of the beginnings of xp. i would give the original disks to the person, remove the application from my machine and then i called msoft and advised them of the license transfer. they took the info and were happy. apple simply is not a contender in this situation. they are all about control. even moreso than microsoft and i would never have believed i just said that. dont get me wrong they make some incredible hardware and systems, i just totally am at odds with their business philosophies.
I went from being with AT&T and an iPhone to T-Mobile with the unlocked Moto X Style (Pure). Before setting up T-Mobile on the Moto X, I did the following:
Manually followed Apple's instructions on deregistering iMessage on my iPhone, iPad, and MacBook: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203042
Unfortunately, I became the victim of the following problem listed on that Apple support page - "In some cases, you might not get a message after you deregister iMessage if the person sending you a text is using an existing old conversation. Ask the person to start a new conversation to send you a message. To do so, they'll first need to swipe to the left to delete the existing conversation."
So on my wife's iPhone, my mom's iPhone, and my dad's iPhone, I deleted all iMessage conversations in which I was a member (both group and one to one). I did the same on my mom and dad's iPads. I couldn't do this on my sister's iPhone or her MacBook because she was out of the country. It's simply unreasonable to expect me to ask every single person I've had an iMessage conversation with to delete any and all conversations in which I am a member on all of their iOS and OS X devices.
Various problems with group texts with iPhones users:
Messages were never received at all
Messages came into my email instead of my SMS app
I'd receive messages from some group members but not others
In the end, as my phone must be a reliable communication tool, I'm left with no choice but to return my Moto X and get an iPhone again. Every 18 months or so, I'll get a new phone and I usually go from iPhone to Android or Android to iPhone, and I've never had problems this severe before. Kudos to Apple for coming up with a technical solution for preventing people from leaving its platform. I'm torn because I really like to hop back and forth between platforms as I think both OSes are very good at specific things. Ultimately, Apple has won - not by winning my heart but by developing a communication platform that prohibits users from leaving.
Heed this advice. If you have never used iMessage, do not start. Use the Signal app for encrypted text messages. It's available for both iOS and Android. I still believe iMessage is fantastic for communication within the Apple ecosystem, but I can no longer recommend it, as Apple makes it impossible to use competing products without going to great lengths to ensure everyone you have ever communicated with has deleted their SMS history with you.
Why not just tell em to stop using imessage to contact you and just use sms lol
Maybe I'm missing something, I thought iOS users could choose how to send messages

I feel for you man. The way iMessage and SMS behave in ios is a mess. I know one person in particular who keeps having iMessage switched off in settings (she swears she isn't doing it). Every time that happens any texts from other ios users just sit in Apple's servers waiting patiently to be delivered to a phone that is refusing to use iMessage.
It might be an unintended consequence, but it sure is a poor implementation from a tech savvy company. It really stinks of anti-competitive behavior. Very discouraging to the average smartphone user to leave ios for android and suddenly not get texts from iphone using contacts. I've found many tend to blame the wrong platform, thinking their new android is the problem not Apple hijacking their contacts' messages. Apple has at least sort of admitted they've caused a problem, but their fix for it is pretty slapdash.

That's what I was thinking. Why return a really great phone because the other guys can't get their Sh!t straight. Or more realistically, refuse to cooperate with everyone because they depend solely on their "exclusivity" BS. But hey, do what you gotta do R0b0, like you said you have to be able to communicate. Oddly enough though, the entire female side of my family and also my brother in law use iphones with me and my dad being on Androids and both on Tmobile and we don't seem to have problems between each other. Possibly APN settings maybe?

There's nothing like APN settings you can do to fix it from the android side.
It is all about how iphones try to send messages through iMessage and only fall back to SMS when the contact they're sending to isn't registered with iMessage. If you've never used an iphone or haven't used one in a long time it is not a problem. You run into problems when you leave iphone. All your contacts' iphones continue to try and communicate with you through iMessage, and your texts just pile up in Apples servers.
As OP has noted it can be overcome with some user intervention. Sorry Apple users, I'm sure there are some very technical ones among you especially here, but I've found that the average iphone user hasn't even noticed that some of their texts are green and some are blue. And they have absolutely no clue about the difference between an SMS and an iMessage.
I thought all you had to do was deregister your number from imessage servers?

It's apple's innovative approach to ensuring you stay tethered to the apple mothership

All hail the mothership....................
I sense a class action lawsuit in the future...
I wonder if iPhone users want to switch but Apple won't let them go freely. Does people who have iPhone's really love this desperate act Apple has over their customers? Sad

My main issue with Signal is that it doesn't allow full MMS backups unless you use Titanium. Other than that it's a great tool.

I have hundreds of contacts in my contact list and no idea who uses iOS or Android. I could send a mass text to everyone with instructions on how to do send as SMS, but any subsequent reply to the text will go to everyone in the group, and it would be chaos. And the message wouldn't even apply to my Android contacts. I could BCC email all of them instead, but I don't have the email address for many of my contacts. Or I could convince a friend with an iPhone to back up their iPhone, let me restore my iPhone backup to their phone, go through every single iMessage conversation and note who I was conversing with, and then send an individual text message to each one of these people from my Android phone, telling them how to send as SMS to me.
In the end, this places the burden on family, friends, and acquaintances to go through their message history and select to send as SMS to any individual or group exchange in which I was a member.
Again, I could try all of these things. But it would be a huge time sink for both myself and scores of my family and friends, and after what I've experienced so far, I can't even be sure that this would be the end of it. When I was younger and had more free time, I would have tinkered around more. But I'm married with pets and have a full time job. I want to spend my free time with my wife, dog, rabbits, and Rocket League - not spend hours tapping on my phone. Returning my Moto X and getting a new iPhone takes far less time and effort, even if it means letting Apple win this battle.

I get your frustration. And in the end, when all of your friends with iPhones can't contact you but they can still contact each other, it only strengthens their opinion of Apple while making Android seem more like a joke. Agh.
But did you ever try contacting Apple support? They can manually deregister your device from their servers--if that's what the problem is.

Yeah that's what I figured, like if they/you deregistered your number then it would send as SMS from what I've read.

This is yet another scenario that keeps me away from the iPhone.
I had the same problem!! It had something to do with the phone carrier number in your messaging app. I couldn't find this setting on this device. But the stock messaging app on my samsung a3 had these settings. So i changed the number on that device. And after that i switched the sim cards. After that it worked as it should!
As an ex applecare rep who much prefers Android, yes op, call applecare and ask them to deregister your cell as a valid imessage contact.
Any device that is running iOS 7.1 or later should change back to sms for your number within 72 hours. Instant for iOS 8 and above. For devices running previous to ios 7.1 the device only refreshes existing messaging threads on reboot or deletion of the specific imessage thread.
However make the call and enjoy the pure. It's a great phone! https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201232

Here in the UK people have largely ditched SMS in favour of WhatsApp because of that very issue. WhatsApp is cross platform and most phone plans have generous data allowances even on PAYG.
I had the same problem when I switched from my iPhone last year but other than my mum, I don't think I send SMS messages to anyone else now.

Too true, I have 3000 messages allowance on my current contract and I use less than 50 throughout the month thanks to WhatsApp, Facebook messenger and unlimited 4G data
Dear all,
I am a long time XDA member but just wanted to keep my identity safe from my company. Therefore using new account
My company is a very large company but in Asia and they are taking advantage of the employees and myself. The situation is that they are implementing a BYOD policy and we have to bring out own phones and laptops to use with work email. But at the same time they are implementing Data Leakage Protection software which they are forcing us to install on our own devices. I believe this is highly unethical and I have approached some lawyers and though not illegal they also feel unethical. However they have no recourse but to tell me to document everything. Anyways pretty useless.
The DLP software is essentially snoopware and logs and backs up files being transferred. Their argument is that we are using their network etc etc. I mention mention that we can use other networks to connect to the internet. Anyways, tired of arguing. Anyways it is a take it or leave it situation. I would like to know is there a way to access company email through Android without connecting to their exchange or active sync. The company has webmail and I looked at blue mail and it seems to be able to use http but its very buggy. I want to log or monitor what is being sent out from my phone to the company. I have been using the browser to access my company email but that is very manual. I was planning to carry two phones, but it also means I have to get two data plans which I argued should be paid by company... but of course all these measures are to cut cost from the company POV so they will not pay.
I also looking for a way to block the DLP software on the laptop but that is another forum.
EDIT: Apologies I think I posted in the wrong forum but I would like to stop my company from hacking /snooping my phone...
Thanks for listening and any advice
