Avoid StraightTalk SIM. - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Some of you know I have been using a pre-paid Sim Chip in my cell phone for my phone/internet service.
These past three days, my crippled data speeds have become unbearable. Time-outs caused notes to both Google Drive and Evernote to disappear into the digital ether, never to be seen or heard from again. After searching terms such as "HTC One X speeds straight talk" and "straight talk sim speeds" I began to see a pattern. People complaining of arbitrary throttling, and conflicting press releases by Tracfone Wireless and América Móvil, the parent copany of tracfone, straight talk, net10, Assure wireless, and others.
After trying the suggestions found on reputable android websites like XDA Developers and Droid FOrums I had no reliefe, and so sent an email to the corproate resolutions team at Straight talk (not the first time I've had to do this, as they tried to **** me out of at least $32 earlier this year with false advertising.)
Poor Connection Speeds
I am experiencing very poor connection speeds with my BYOP sim card. My phone is an HTC One X (ATT Version). phone number [redacted] straighttalk email registered via this account UN: [redacted]
I have set all of the APN settings to the defaults on the card and on the website.
Create a new APN with the following values:
APN Name: Straight Talk
APN: att.mvno
Proxy: http://proxy.mvno.tracfone.com
Port: 80 MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: 66.209.11.33 MMS
Port: 80
I have also tried variations on this APN with no luck. Other solutions tried include powercycling the phone, changing the type of default data connection, cycling the "airplane mode" on and off, cycling from 2/3G to 2G and back, updating the radio stack and baseband in my phone, and connecting to and disconnecting from a wifi network. None of these solutions has made a dent in the data speeds, which makes me fairly well certain that the problem is not with my hardware's ability to recieve signal.
At best my connection speed in Ottumwa IA is 223 kbps, and often only half that. And yet people sitting right next to me with Straight Talk phones or sim cards can easily get 1000+ kbps. The phone is not an issue, it's capable of a huge variety of frequencies and standards, and many of them are offered in my area via both ATT and Tmo towers in Ottumwa, IA. This issue has also been consistent across all of my ownership time of the SIM card. If this is a "cap" as has been widey discussed in the tech press, then it should restart with my new billing period. That has not been the case, as these slow data speeds have remained fairly consistent since I purchased the card in January, including a service lapse and reactivation.
It concerns me that I have read examinations on multiple forums and in the press from knowledgable users that there is a difference between the sim card program and the straight talk branded phones, and that users of the sim program are not only throttled, but also purposely targeted for slower speed standards in general. It is seriously affecting my usage of my phone, as in the last few days, critical apps such as Evernote and Google Drive have experienced timeouts resulting in lost data.
Straight Talk has already upset me once as a company and it took my contacting consumer advocacy groups to recieve a satisfactory resolution to that issue. The fact that I still utilize the service is a show of my good faith with it, but if these performance issues cannot be addressed, I am afraid that I will have to join many others singling the company out for criticism. You'll notice the specific proxy and port called out by the APN when android 2.1 or newer can easily auto-propegate these fields. It has been determined by people more knowledgable than myself that that combination of proxy and port specifically funnels SIM users to a pre-throttled branch of the network when compared with people using branded straight-talk phones.
Dear Lawrence,
We do apologize for the inconvenience this has caused you. I just checked your account on our system and found out that your data has been reduced. Furthermore, your data speed will be restored at a reduced speed 24 hours after an airtime card is added to your service end date. Should you have further questions, feel free to send us an email.
Sincerely,
Tyler

TLR if you ever even once go over the undisclosed cap of 1.5 gb... your connection will be throttled to >222 kbps. PERMANENTLY.
Since all of the Tracfone services under all the different names utilize the same back end, this will likely also be true of any other smart phone on a tracfone wireless service.
Then I guess I will be telling everyone I come in contact with to steer clear of any Tracfone subsidiary, as well as once again contacting the BBB and lodging another complaint. Thank you for confirming my worst suspicions about your company. This is the second time I have been baited and switched by you folks and I will not be giving this company a third chance, regardless of any offers you make to me.
Sincerely

when I first signed up for the service in january, I purchased a $30 limited airtime card. when I tried to activate it, I learnd that it was "illegal" to use on the smart phone program. even though I had prior written confrimation from Straight Talk customer service that I could do just that. They then tried to keep my money for THAT card as; well as make me either eat the $14.99 I had paid for the sim card, or pay another $45 plus tax and fees for the "unlimited" card.
In fact, it's only been in the last month, after numerous complaints like mine, that they began marking on their websites and packaging that smartphones MUST use the $45 unlimited plan or higher.
So, as per my promise to this company I am passing along my experience as a warning and cautionary tale. do NOT do business with TracFone, NET10 Wireless, Straight Talk, SafeLink Wireless, Telcel América and Simple Mobile. You will be bond for nothing but tears and trouble when you need their service most and they decide you're no longer profitable enough.

Sorry to hear about all the trouble your having. I've got a BYOP StraightTalk sim too but I'm on T-Mobile's network. I've abused the heck out of my data so far but haven't noticed reduced speeds and I'm pretty sure I've gone way beyond 1.5 GB. Could this just be the case for folks on an AT&T sim?

For some reason you have just had bad service with straight talk. I've been running straight talk for the past 6 months and have never had ANY problems. One month I used about 7 gigs of data ( a rogue app) and they did throttle me for the rest of that service month to 25kbps but the minute I refilled my account the throttle was lifted and I was regularly seeing 7mbps HPSA+ again. Since then I have used 2 and 2.5 gigs and have not got any texts or calls telling me I was using too much data and I have not been throttled.
Furthermore they have advertissed that the $30 card cant be used with smartphone before last month. I knew it six month ago when I first got my sim.
And you dont even have to enter the proxy into the apn for the service to work. Been using my phone since the beginning of this year with no proxy just fine. Oh and by the way I'm extremely satisfied with the service I get. I got about a 2 dollar discount for using auto refill so for unlimited text, unlimited talk, the best coverage in the nation, and a soft limited of somewhere around 3-4 gigs of data, I would say $42.50 a month is a deal that cant be beat by ANY OTHER service provider today.

Ha, pretty funny we keep winding up in the same places. I've been with straight talk for about the same amount of time also without trouble, although slow data speeds today. Other than that I have absolutely no complaints.

sorry to hear about your troubles but I can say this least
For the past 2 to 2 and a half months I have currently been using a net10 SIM before I got my HTC One. I first jumped on the band wagon of Net10 SIM when I got Samsung Galaxy Note ( Orignal) for $200 dollars. I found the net10 sim package at my local game stop for around $15 dollars. In that package there is three SIM options : One for AT&T branded or unlocked phones; One for a T-Mobile Branded or unlocked phones; and one micro SIM for AT&T branded or unlocked phones. I paid a small fee and had my Note unlocked and used the full sized AT&T sim. Got great speeds on HSPA+ ( between 4 and 8 mbps). However when I activated the SIM on their website they notified me, albeit in the small print , that if I used an AT&T sim that at 1.5 gb of use they WOULD throttle the speed down the snail ass slow. But on the left side of the screen they announced that if the AT&T SIM users want to switch to T-Moblie service instead that they would send them a free SIM card to do so. T-Mobile blows in my town as they have no 3g ony their EDGE service which isnt worth a damn with a 4g phone. So I'm limited on the service as far as GSM is concerned . With AT&T I get the back haul 4g its not LTE but still pretty snappy. The first month my 5 year old blew threw the 1.5 gb and instead of throttling me they just cut data out completely. Then they proceed to say that if you do that and add a service card before your service end date then then it does nothing for you data speed. it has to be on or after the service end date. I waited till the day my service ended and add an "unlimited" service card. However that did nothing. It was three DAYS before I had ANY data the two more days till my speeds were on par with what they were at the begaining. So all I can say is really RESEARCH the service you want and as always learn first hand. I am currently using the micro SIM in my OneX
and so far so good. I just use wifi when and wherever I can and keep and eye on my data usage. Other than the BS at first its pretty good for what you pay.

I've personally noticed network speed decreasing with the ownership of any prepaid GMS sim card.that I've tried (h20, straight talk, simple mobile)

Straight Talk completely turned off my data. Data does not work at all, Mms doesn't work. Which is why I'm switching service providers at the end of the month. I've had no problems for about the first 2 months. Then I pay for this month's and my data is cut off. I'm not going to keep paying for something that doesn't work. My little sister has an iPhone 4 on straight talk and her data is constantly off one day then on the next.

Same thing here.. I did get throttled once... 13 gb in 3 weeks, cable modem died and I tethered to my laptop, Netflix, Pandora, 1channel... Gotta love mhl adapter. They dropped me to like 25k a second, pure horror. After next payment boom full speed again.. sounds like the op just had a bad run

I was wondering if you fixed this problem. I have the HTC one x and have the exact same issue I have tried everything and phone still acts up. If so could you email me the solution please my email is [email protected] Thanks

Confirmed with Net10 also
Just to report same thing with me.. I had an HTC Vivid branded Att and also a Galaxy S3. I was duped into using the Net10 service and everything was fine until I flashed a different ROM on my girlfriends S3 and all the sudden I couldnt get any mobile data. I searched and re flashed roms and thought I wiped her radio. I felt like a noob for the weekend then finaly I tried puting the sim card from my Vivid into her phone and everything worked fine. I put her sim card in my phone and I couldnt get any data. Then I got heated because I just spent 2 days and nights messing with this phone, my girlfriend now thinks Im incompetent. and I never received any type of warning and new that I didnt use that much data.
Well that monday about noon I realized that I didnt have any data on my phone either. I called the worthless customer service to ask what the deal was and talked to a gentleman in India who after 30 mins told me that I reached my limit on data. I have an unlimited data plan that costs me 50.00 x2 a month. it was the 18th so a little over a half of a month I supposedly reached a limit that doesnt exist. I asked to buy more data with no luck.
Here is a company that offers unlimited but then says I reached my limit after about 2.5 weeks without any email or warning. They have no problem emailing me for dumb ****. Then I have no option to purchase more. I know that most people would say I just had a bad go. But I can assure you that this company doesnt want your business so dont give it to them.
Net10 Straight Talk Tracfone ALL THE SAME COMPANY
Use them if you want to but you will be throttled and possibly shut down. I had a smartphone that I couldnt use for a month. Im now with Tmobile and its not much better. I have no service in alot of areas that I frequent. Im not sure if any of them are worth a damn.

I'm going to have to change my opinion here I just paid my bill on the 1st. And on the third I was having issues sending a mms. Well knowing how much I screw with the phone I assumed it was something I did.. then I noticed when I left home and my WiFi disconnected I had no data at all... Now I'm pis**d off, call customer service after looking at my data usage.. 26mb used. I get the typical india rep that says they have no idea why. Then I ask for a supervisor and the guy says ok. I'm placed on hold only for the line to be answered by a machine telling me about high data usage.. I was like Bulls**t and called back. I get pumped to same message 4 times.. now keep in mind it's was a holiday here in the US so I had quite a few beers flowing through me. I finally called back from my wife's line and refused to give my cell number or name till I had a supervisor on the line. After tearing him a new one he reset my account and I verified I had data and at normal speeds. Then I had him give me the number to the corporate office, I called and received the message about calling back between normal business hours. I'm calling them Monday and gonna have some fun, polite but pissed attitude. I'll post the results of the call and may even record it and post that. See how it goes this time.
Only thing better than customer service is finally getting the phone number directly to the main corporate office in Florida.
I shall share

i used to be an Sprint user, i was paying like $165 for 2 lines , the Internet was very slow sometimes, so i looked Information of cheaper carriers and good service and i Found Straight Talk,. that uses T-Mobile and At&t network, ( depends of your Sim Card ) so i bought 2 at&t sim cards from Ebay, like $70 dollars each, and i bought this awesome device too , and i unlocked the iphone 4s ( sprint iphone ) of my daughter with GPP and now i been using Straight Talk service $45 UNLIMITED, ( $90 dollars for both phones ) and the internet is very fast , i don't know what it is, but i guess is because i have the AT&T Straight Talk sim card . i'm very happy with this new service.
btw, i tried this APN settings, but,...
Name: ST (or whatever you want)
APN: att.mvno

APN type: default, supl, mms (notice I took off the mms! This is because we’ll enter a 2nd APN for mms.)
APN protocol: IPv4

but my data and mms wasn't working. so i finally found the correct APN settings for my At&t sim card.
APN: tfdata

regarding data plan from t-mobile USA

hi there, if i set up data plan using a phone that required data plan for 10 bucks from t-mobile USA, (says, a nokia nuron) Can I switch to another smartphone that I brought somewhere else (says, HTC HD2) and still be able to use that 10 bucks data plan on the HD2 and not using the expensive 30 bucks plan? I already tried putting on sim card into the HD2, and on my T-mobile page, my phone status is still show that i am using the nuron. do I have a chance to keep the 10 bucks plan if I change phone to HD2?
PS:
OK, I just called up t-moible USA to add data plan to my bill. she said the 10 bucks data plan isn't available anymore and all i can add is the $15 for 200MB or $30 for unlimited. of course I said NO and asked her to transfer me to a consumer loyalty dept. From there, I told the rep that i am using a Nokia Nuron that I got from signing a contract w/ them and let me add the $10 data plan to my bill.
So now, i have to wait for couple of hours before i can access the data plan. I think i will change phone back to the Nuron and see if the data works then change back to my hd2 and see if it's working also. I HOPE TODAY IS MY LUCKY DAY!!!!
edit: OK, I just got access to the web with the web2go data on my HD2 (android)
now, i have 3 different icon on the data, H, 3G, and E...iH>3G>E in speed wise right? and if i have both wifi and data turn on, does that mean, wifi will always be used first if there is wifi connection?
I don't think so..... Sadly im sure you will have to get the 30 dollars web I tried doing that on a nokia and it didnt work.

Hi there. I had signed up w the tmobile web2go $10 access initially when using and unlocked nokia 5800 and then got a hold of an unlocked Samsung captivate and have been accessing the internet fine for a few months now. All of a sudden the internet is no longer working and just goes to the web2go "need subscription" page. I called t-mobile and supposedly the "system" is able to see what kind of phone I have and they have "corrected" the ability for you to use a smart phone w the $10 plan. They now are saying I'm required to upgrade my data to the 200mb a mo for $15 a mo or unlimited for $30 in order for the internet to work at all. Why is it that all the reps I've talked to in the past has always had to ask which phone I'm using when the system can see it? Is this truly a "correction" or is this rep just trying to shaft me and not help me?-

Try changing the APN settings ... epc.tmobile.com is now the default connection for devices while all the other APNS like wap.voicestream.com from tmoblie still work but arent being used by tmobile
Try changing it and see what happens....
tmobile proxies don't use the epc.tmobile since its monitored and in use
And if they can really tell what phone you have.. Ima say no.. They have always asked what phone im using... Unless they just ask to see if you lie or not lol
Thanks for the reply!
Yeah.... I SERIOUSLY doubt that she could have seen what kind of phone I use based on the convo. I Told her what kind I used and had to tell Every Other Rep too... (they all thought I used a SonyEricson Equinox) but she was not a very nice lady who you can tell was one of those "had to be right" gals. So when I asked her why every other rep thought I was using the Equinox and why they all had to ask what phone I use, she made some stupid reply of them being on different "systems" (there's that magical word used for third party excuses again).
I have tried 3 different APN settings.
APN: epc.tmobile.com
MMSC: mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
APN: internet2.voicestream.com
MMSC: 216.155.174.84/servlets/mms
APN: wap.voicestream.com
MMSC: 216.155.174.84/servlets/mms
All were with:
APN: t-mobile
MCC: 310
MNC: 260
APN Type: internet + mms
(the rest were not set)
I would set it to that... then turn it off and restart it.
I got a call back from my cell phone store gal and she also says she doubts that they can tell what kind of phone I had and also guessed that the gal was trying to get credit for upselling me to a better data plan.
She also said that if anything... NOT to use that epc apn because that is the one that they May be able to track what kind of phone you use and therefore try and upsell you with.
On all my phones that i switch to use with T-Mobile I just change the apn to wap.voicestream.com and thats it.. I don't put no MMSC or any kind of IP
As long as you have an active Data Plan on the Account it shouldn't matter what APN you use they all work.. Some are slower then others

I just tried using just the wap.voicestream.com and it didn't work for me... grrrrrrrrr.
It also seems to be affecting my ability to send out MMS.
i bet if there was a way to change the IMEI of what the hd2 shows internally, you'd prolly get it to work... don't know if there's such a way though
In my case they actually knew and said is this the kind of phone you are using and I just barely started to use it now recently I went from defy to cliq 2 and checked the tmobile account page and it still says im using a defy kinda weird lol

the my t-mobile will not change unless you manually change it. and yes, the CS can see what phone you're using and also have a list of phones you used in the past. the T-zone and web2go ($5, $5.99 or $10 plan) will not work any t-mobile branded androids except for behold2.

Grandfathered Plan no 4G, New Plan 4G... WTF?

I was reading about Data lags on the sensation but never noticed it on mine (Tmobile US) but I did notice that my "4G" speeds were incredibly slow and went through all the troubleshooting "Ciphering off/on radio off/on" "airplane mode on/off" "hard reset" "new sim card" ect.
Using the SpeedTest.Net App, I was getting about 1MB download and less than 1MB Upload. Sometimes I'd get 500KB Download. I called Tmobile Customer Service and they said that my current android plan "$35 Unlimited Data and Text" (even though my phone constantly shows 4G at the top) does not include 4G and I'd have to update to the new plan which includes 4G for $30 5GB Unlimited (wtf?) Data and $15 Unlimited Text"....so I changed it....2 hours later....
I'm still getting the same speed. <1MB Download <800KB Upload...
Any help guys? Did I pretty much just get ripped off? I'm on Tmobile US, in a 4G coverage area. --- What speeds are you guys getting?

Did you go over your limit? They will throttle you if you go above the 2gb/5gb/10gb
I'm currently throttled and only getting .5mbps down. sucks but I got throttled one week before my new cycle so hopefully it will go back up next week
Nope. Got the phone last week and Its been slow like that since. I called tmobile to check and see and they said I was well below my usage.
You shouldn't have changed your plan. There might be something wrong with the phone or the area you live in.
That's what I asked them, I said what if it's the phone and not my data plan. I told her that Tech Support doesn't know what the problem is but they just think that the plan is old and that's why its not on 4G, I asked if I still get the same problem can I change my plan back to the grandfathered plan, The rep said that she had a problem like that before and she switched her plan and she got fast speeds but if it doesn't get resolved she will note the account so that "special accounts care" MIGHT switch me back to my old plan.
Still slow speeds.
The feature your taking about, $30 for the 5G data is a Required feature if your on an old plan. You can switch to the $79.99 even more plan and that gives you unlimited talk text and 2GB web each month. if you choose to remain on the old plan, the 5GB $30 plan is the data plan we can add in the store.

My thing is, I had a plan for $35 Unlimited Data and Text but they said that doesn't support 4G so I changed the plan to $30 5GB and $15 Unlimited Text plan but the speeds are STILL the same.
I was wondering what everyone else's speed is and if I just got ripped off going into a new more expensive data plan yet receiving the same speed as my old cheaper plan.
It could be in the area your in, but just to be sure, go into your tmobile store and try speedtest while your there and also check the sensation they have in the store.

good idea checking the speed on theirs. But as far as area wise, I don't think its that. I live in Garland, Texas but go out all over the place for fun. So I go to Dallas, Rockwall, Fort Worth, and all these big cities and still, slow speeds.

they lied to you.
I am getting 6mb down on the unlimited G1 plan. I did switch sim cards and used the one in the box, but did a web chat to activate so I encountered no BS.
Real sorry about that...
Seriously,
ask for a floor manager, then ask the floor manager for their supervisor, don't stop until you get you plan back.
I got unlimited loyalty minutes $69 for 2 lines and $30 for unlimited text and data. mine data tally never shows any usage, it just says unlimited, doesn't show an amount just 0% used.
I was on the phone for 3 hours though showing my backside a couple years ago.
I got lucky I think, maybe I just feel lucky and have the same deal as the rest of the customers who were around back in the voicestream days before the tmobile buyoiut;
point is though, be nice and cool but persistent and keep asking for managers and supervisors until you get your plan back.
also,
always ask them to place a note on your profile saying what ever they promise.
good luck
and I'm out...
I have a feeling it is something with your phone.
I'm on the grandfathered $25 unlimited Android Data plan (5GB of 4G) and below are speeds I've gotten with 3-4 bars of 4G.
I live about 25 minutes outside of Milwaukee, WI.
5.5 - 10 Mbps download and .6 - 2.2 Mbps Upload

Your unlimited loyalty plan is 5GB . Also, customer care can get you back on your old plan, the guy I'm quoting makes it seem like they are cutting diamonds lol.
Just call and tell the rep you speak to that your account was changed in error and you do not want your data plan changed. If you are questioning the phone, get it replaced.

called tmobile again, talked to them and troubleshooted for about an hour, turning phone on and off, refreshing network ect. and still low speeds 600kbps download and 32 kbps upload. Asked if it could just be my phone and they said no. The tech is opening up a trouble shoot ticket, saying its probably a network error and I should wait up to 72 hours for a technician to come out to the area.
guess I'm waiting.

I will add to the confirmations that the plan or SIM doesn't matter. I use the $25 MyTouch 3g plan and I have an older "2g" SIM card in my Sensation. I average 6-7 Mbs bandwidth with max 10 Mbs seen so far.

I have to humbly disagree with you there...kinda.
I know some here have the same plan and situation you have and granted it works in your case, it is not really fair to say it works for all.
I came from a nexus one and simply changed my sim card over to the sensation on June 9. It worked fine until day 3. I think you have responded to a couple of my threads asking about the "android" vs grandfathered plans on the sensation but I do not recall what was said. Beside that, I was connected fine with my grandfathered data plan which I used with my old SE Xperia x1. It was called a 'smartphone' data plan, which cost 24.99/mo with 400 data texts. I have since replaced the sim that came with the box, made sure the IMEI's matched to their systems (which I think was the reason for the data cutoff) and now have a coded "android" plan.
From day 3, I have been on here asking people's opinions on, "data is data so our grandfathered plans should work no problem"....and to talking with tmobile cs, opening a trouble ticket because it came at the same time there was a problem outtage in my area (San Antonio, TX). I was told that the trouble ticket takes about 3 days to be addressed/resolved.
BUT on day 4 (day 2 of the trouble ticket), I called tmo cs again and got to the second level tech dept and had an in depth troubleshooting call with the extremely nice tech. Turned out she has an android device too so that helped things along.....The tech checked my trouble ticket but had a feeling that she could fix it so we agreed to go for the gusto. Upon tweaking the apn's and other settings, nothing worked even though I have the 4g icon up on my notification bar, just no data transfer. Before hanging up, I asked her about my grandfathered plan and was weary of getting the "suggested" android plans out there because there was nothing comparable to my grandfathered plan. She then went to her senior manager who is also nice and explained my situation. The rep came back to me and said I was right, the old grandfathered plans DO NOT work and any IMEI's that come back with incompatible data plans get disconnected.
So she and her manager saw that I was also a long time member of tmo for over 10 years and agreed to set me right and not have me pay more for a plan that I am getting less features on. The manager went and recoded my grandfathered plan to read Android instead of smartphone. (I am guessing this unlimited wording is 5gb and then throttles me but I am on wifi most of the time so it doesn't bother me) Two seconds later I got a sms from tmo welcoming to the android data plan.
About an hour later I found that my data was flowing again. So I must stress that even though your grandfathered plans may still work, do not be surprised if tmo disco's your data connection. You'll still make and receive calls, but data will be disco'ed.
But to the OP with slow data issues, have you changed the Sim card at all? I would advise against calling tmo and asking them to check the IMEI they have on file because I think that is what flagged my phone to begin with. And as for the data plan issue, you will need to come to grips with what works for you.
This may not be common, but I had to get a new SIM card for my N1 when they rolled out their HSDPA stuff locally I couldn't get any 3G at my apartment after they did; an updated/new SIM card fixed that issue.
As far as the plan, they tried to get me on the same gimmick; said that I should upgrade to the 4G plan etc etc...I politely refused it and im getting 6mbps here in Blue Bell, PA

Yeah they were trying to be nice & all, but seriously, Tmobile blocked all Sensation IMEIs that weren't on their newer plans to force you to "upgrade". It's not the CS reps fault though, but tmobile's & their wanting everyone on a tiered data plan. Your old plan was fine, even worked for a few days (like mine did) until tmobile flipped that lovely IMEI blocking switch.

Lets take a step back. What speeds were you seeing before with your old 3G phone? It's possible that you're just an area with slow speeds. If that's the case call and demand your old data plan back.
T-Mobile has done a lot of cleaning of data usage on their end.
Their new phones and systems are made with code that specifically disregard older data plan coding.
Basically this allows them to say that your old data coding is incompatible with the newer system they're using.
Just looking for you to pay more for less. ( T-Mobile loves AT&T )

I'm using a Sensation with an older Android plan ($24.99 + 400 Texts) and i'm also using a sim card from 2005. I have "4G" speeds. What everyone needs to realize is the technology is the same across the board. There is technically no such thing as 4G on the t-mobile network. If your old "3G" phone worked in your area, then your new "fake 4G" phone will work. If it doesn't then demand to talk to someone else until they fix it. T-mobile shouldn't be tricking anyone into upgrading to a 4G plan by saying it wont work, because that's 100% untrue. All t-mobile did was increase the bandwidth that their old cell-sites would operate at. If your device can handle the faster speeds then it will benefit from the bandwidth upgrade. If the device can't handle the extra bandwidth then it will connect at the fastest speed that it is physically capable of.
I can see T-Mobile's argument if their 4G was LTE or WiMax, but it's not. If T-Mobile wants to argue about 4G speeds then demand to keep your plan at 3G speeds. Their 3G devices would theoretically reach 7.2Mbs which i've only managed to beat once with this new phone, and that speed was 7.7Mbs.
Sorry for the long post. In short, don't give in and fight with them. They'll fix it. Keep escalating the issue until you reach their CIO if you have to.

Using G2X on Straight Talk

Well, its come down to economies. Dishing out 80+ bucks a month is starting to get to me. Believe me, it hurts lol. 79.99 yeah right, after taxes, misc charges, I'm paying more like $90 a month.
So I read that Straight Talk GSM SIM will work on unlocked phones. I happen to get a Nokia E71 on Craigslist. I was pissed that I didn't thoroughly test that it was a Straight Talk phone and impossible to unlock. So, I did some research and turns out Straight talk plan is super cheap, will work on unlocked Android and Jailbroken IPHONE 4.
Out of sheer amusement, I went ahead and activated the Straight Talk phone and tested the SIM on my G2X. Also happen to unlock it a few days ago. Did some digging around and you have to Modify the APN for Data and MMS to work. I got it to work. Its edge......
I might just switch. Tmobile has been awesome. Kinda pissed that I'll be stuck on Edge, but my bill will be cut in half. I'll port my line to Google Voice, and use my G2X with ST prepaid. Just wondering if anyone else tried this?
Still doing some testing, and this ST runs of AT&T towers. My brother has AT&T from his job, and I swear his calls drop after 5 mins. Its a nightmare, and honestly if I run into that kind of crap service, I'll have to stay with Tmobile. Anyone else have thoughts on this?
Only bad side is doing this **** violates TOS with Straight talk. They'll kick/bann/kill my account if I'm caught. I don't mind the E71. Also heard not to abuse their unlimited data. Anyone with a AT&T phone, its like giving them the finger cause you get same service, except ya pay less.
EDGE sucks. I wouldn't worry about abusing data over EDGE. It's OKAY, but you won't have a problem abusing it. If they do provide 3G data services, I would want to get an unlocked ATT smartphone for use rather than the G2X.
Yeah man I thought of this. I pay nearly 250$ a month for mine and my mothers phone... I was told by someone else that thought of it and tried there would be no more 3g or 4g data speeds and I just can't live like that. I'll just keep on keeping on. Cheaper than big red
Sent from my MeGaBoT Transformer!
Yes, AT&T Phone is what will work.
Did speed tests on E71. Its the only phone I have with 3G AT&T Radio. Speeds were great.
And you know the sad part is, the other phones for AT&T aren't that great. Granted, G2X has problems but its a way better phone. Samsung Galaxy SII is only phone I could possible leave for.
Still testing and brainstorming this. I have an idea what to do, but it all means moving to Edge
Well just spoke with T-Mobile Rep and signed a 2 year plan.
Wow can't believe I did that eh. But I got the 49.99 unlimited everything and at 4g speeds. Didn't have to get two lines or anything. It applied to my single account only. Pleased in the end, kinda sucks I had to sign a 2 year contract but for comparable rates to prepaid straight talk, forget edge. Was ready to leave.
Guess I am here to stay. Also got my 3500mha extended battery arrive. Hell, and my g2x wont have a battery problem.
Guess should have checked all this before doing this straight talk experiment. Dam I feel like fool. Oh well

Not Exactly. He got the value plan that comes with out any discounted phone. With free phone the same plan will cost $80.
Yes, what he said, I had the plan where I pay full price for my phones.
Anyhow, I called this morning and turns out the customer service rep messed up and misspoke. That 49.99 was in error and did require 2 lines. I had one, an was pushed to the 59.99 actually it was more like 65.00
But whatever, going to T-mobile prepaid. I reversed the contract. Wow that was quickest back pedal ever. I used to need 4G but rarely use it now a days. I'm really looking to pay $50 a month. Prepaid is my only option, until I get a AT&T phone and revisit straight talk.
But whatever. Just looking to not have expensive bill each month.
Wow I didn't realize how expensive plans were in the US.
My I pay $30/mo for unlimited data, text, and talk (voicemail+call display, etc. too).
Only downside is the coverage area is relatively small (but thats okay, it has it where I live and work)

Works out about right...
30 dollars Canadian = 80 dollars US.
[added in case the attempt at humor isn't seen. But its damn close. The dollar is in the toilet.]
I had the $79.99 1500 min, unlim text, 5 gb 4g data, but signed up for the Tmobile Value Plan and paid a $200 migration fee.
Now I get 500 mins, unlimited wifi mins, unlim text, 2gb 4G data then unlim throttled speed for 49.99 and a 15% discount which makes it 42.50 a month. Not bad. They charged me a second $200 migration fee the second month and had to speak to a manager who took care of the bogus fee. Thank god I caught that and canceled my autobill with Tmobile since then.
You have to use your own Tmobile phone with the Value Plan. I was lucky enough to have ONE full upgrade available on my account due to the problems I had with the G2X. Don't know if I will use it for the Samsung Hercules. If you want a new phone with this program Tmobile will give you a payment plan of 21 months on the phones purchased at Tmobile retail or online website with the value plan. $500 full price phone would be 21 monthly payments of $23 added to your phone bill. I would rather get a used phone from Ebay or Craigs.
Unlimited WiFi Minutes? You mean you didn't have unlimited WiFi minutes before?
Yeah, get a ATT android phone (I like the Atrix) if you want 3g on straight talk.
I'm using Simple Mobile. $60.00 unlimited everything. It's a real good deal.

The value plan is only better if you have a good device already and don't care about not getting any discounted upgrades ever...
For one person i'd go classic plan for 69.99 unl everything, 500 minutes and free wifi calling and you get a much cheaper phone, especially if you go somewhere else than the corporate store.
2 people you could get 1000 min and all that for $120

free unlimited wifi minutes is not automatic on your account. You have to call to get it put on free. If its not there in your account it still uses your airtime when you use your own wifi.

Questions regarding g2x and ST e71 Sim
Hello every one here.
I'm new to the site and have learned a lot just reading posts here already. I'm posting here because this thread was most related to what I have to ask. I have been useing Straight talk for about 3 1/2 years now and I bought an e71 when they first came out. I did not know I could use the sim in different phones until recently. I got a Tmobil G2x from some one my wife knows thinking that its on the att network and i could use the sim card in it. I paid to get an unlock code and am able to make calls and sms but i have not been able to get data(web or mms) to work. I have searched google as well as the search button here. according to what i read here I should be able to get edge speed connection but apparently im doing something wrong.

Am i just out of luck getting my ST E71 sim to work for data/mms in my G2x? At this point I would be happy with edge speeds. If I cant get it to work I may have to find a different phone.
And finally I had another question about the G2x, on mine I can't seem to get a decent volume out of my ringtones. I have tried several apps but none will let me get any thing better than the 7/7 on the volume slider. Does any one have a sujestion for boosting the ringtone volume? or am I just out of luck on that too?
Even though I dumped straight talk, now you don't even need to buy their E71 phone. They sell the SIM
Here are the APN Settings. I'll tell you, the G2X has some weird, and I do mean very weird settings. You use 1 APN for MMS and Data.
DELETE ALL APN then create a new APN

MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com

MNC:410
Here is some Extra Info:
att.mvno
Proxy: proxy.mvno.tracfone.com
Voicemailbox: 12624169900
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is the thing, Create the APN with the settings above. If it doesn't work, look at the Extra Info and play around with those settings. I had to mess with this settings for few days before I got it to work.
The G2X refuses work with import APN Settings that are out there. I found APN settings import on the Howard forums. They will work on any other device EXCEPT G2X which sucks. Works fine when I imported to G2
The point is, the most StraightTalk settings use separate APN for MMS and DATA. G2X is special (LIke CRAP!!) and uses a single APN for StraightTalk to work.
Try it out. If I still had the SIM or the service active I'd give you word for word what the settings are.
Hope this helps. And when it does work, most you will get is EDGE so no 3G/4G

[Q] New Skyrocket No data? SIM card issue?

I just purchased a brand new Galaxy S II Skyrocket (AT&T) online (not from AT&T directly), the phone is amazing. But I can not get a data connection on the phone. Wifi works fine, and I can make and receive calls and send and receive sms but no data connection at all.
My previous phone an HTC hero (was a version from canada I think for Rogers) works fine and has for years. I just took the sim from that phone popped it into the new skyrocket expecting all to be well, but no dice, no data connection on the new skyrocket.
My first guess was that I needed to change some settings on the phone, I seem to recall needing to do that on the Hero when I first got it years back. After searching around though there dont seem to be any settings to change that would make a differance. Maybe I only needed to change something beacuse the old phone wasnt actually AT&T but Rogers? I'm not sure.
My second thought was maybe the newer phones use a newer type of sim card. I think I've had my current sim card through at least 3 phones. It says 3G on it but I may have had it before my Hero, and the HTC Tilt before that, and even with my old motarola flip phone from way back.
I took it into Best Buy to ask them about the sim cards and the guy there told me the ones they use look just like the one I have (still say 3G on them).
I am trying to avoid going directly to AT&T with this as I have a very old plan that I was transfered into back when it was Cingular wireless, and I am hoping and praying that I dont need to get transfered into some other plan. I know my current plan has a data package it has been working on my old HTC tilt, followed by my HTC Hero fine for years and years now. Unless there is some distinction between my data plan and some new data plan required for new phones?
I am at my wits end and really hope I didnt waste 500 bucks on this amazing phone any suggestions any of you might have would be very very very appreciated.
You need to call att and tell them that you have a skyrocket now. You can keep your current plan, you just gotta let them know you have that phone. No biggie at all. A new sim card may be necessary as well. Which can be picked up at your local store. You'll be fine. And enjoy your new skyrocket.

I'm pretty sure att makes you buy an lte plan if you have an lte phone. Kinda wack, but I think its true.

They may change it to and LTE plan, but im positive he can keep all the features of his old plan. If you still have unlimited data from back in the day you can keep it. Beware of the throttle though.
Sent from my pocket rocket
Yes you get to keep all your features and plan they just change it to a lte package don't do like me and do it on the phone just to find out I had to go get a new lte Sim card and to find out that the ****hook on the phone that acted like he knew what he was doing when I said "look buddy I got the unlimited data plan I don't wanna mess it up" and he gives me the "oh no i'm not touching that sir" only to find out I had to go to the store and get a new Sim card and low and behold he did change my unlimited data plan also. Cause he was a moron

You need a lte sim card. A friend of mines had a similar problem, he
just went directly to a att store and they gave him a new sim.
You should be able to keep your current plan.

I have not yet I did come across some other posts else where that mentioned changing APN settings but I dont see those options in the phone any where, not like my old HTC hero.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions I guess I will just have to brave going to the AT&T store and pray things work out.
It will man they will just make you a lte Sim card should do it for free

He needs a new sim card. Simple as that...

I had the same problem when I went into Best Buy to get my Skyrocket. The mobile data would not work no matter what the idiot employees tried. They used my old SIM card even though I said I was pretty sure the Skyrocket needed a new one.
I finally got a little upset and took the phone to the AT&T store. The guy that helped me was pretty cool and gave me a new SIM card. Mobile data started working right away lol
Stopped by AT&T and ..well unfortunetly that couldn't have gone much worse...
I was told my current plan "has unlimited data, but you don't have a data plan so you can't use that phone"
So now I'm going to get stuck with another $70 a month on top of what I was already paying, to have less minutes and less data than I did before...
On top of that, there was something odd on my account or something and they couldn't just add a $30 data plan to it, they couldnt even cancel it and start new. So now I am waiting for someone from customer service to call me "maybe this week" so they can fix what ever it is so they can finish taking more of my money.... *sigh*
o well thanks for the help everyone anyway it was worth a shot.
Something sounds fishy about that

Yeah man sounds like you are fixing to get bent over. Did you have a "unlimited smartphone data plan"?

I'd definitely have to agree with the two above me. If you had the original unlimited data plan, it WILL grandfather over into the LTE plans. Sounds like they're trying to jank you into paying for a completely new, added line, but leaving the data plan you already had before on there. Therefore, technically paying for TWO lines. If the rep seriously couldn't get rid of something that was on your plan before, he seriously doesn't know what he's doing and just tried a manual workaround that would work. You'd be amazed how easy it is to change/add/remove things to your plan in their system.

Basically. That at&t rep is just trying to **** you over. You should be able to
use your current plan on this device. All that's needed is a new sim. Nothing more,
nothing less.
lyndone58's solution worked for me. I typed in his first suggested APN and now I have 4G. No trip to the at&t store necessary. I just took the mini sim card out of my iphone, cut up a credit card and stuck the mini sim in the middle of it and stuck it in my skyrocket. No new sim card necessary. All is well with this fix. Thanks.
1st. There is NO such thing as an LTE sim card. Its just APN settings done OTA by AT&T. I know of people with the old 64k Cingular cards in LTE phones.
But this sounds like an sim card issue. One of my 3 skyrockets on my family plan has had this issue and we finally changed his sim card and working.

I see Cricket is advertising new prepaid plans including a 10GB per month data plan (Pro plan with AutoPay at $55/month). And SIM's are $0.99 (for a limited time). I assume no activation fee.
Since all of StraightTalk's plans only support 3GB data per month (throttled thereafter) I'm considering moving from ST to Cricket. I assume they operate on the exact same network (AT&T) so I assume there should have no coverage differences. Is that a good assumption?
Can anyone please post the APN info for CricketWireless?
Anyone else change from StraightTalk to Cricket? Any issues to report?

The "3GB" in the OP refers to the per month "high-speed allowance" (data).

The correct APN settings are on their website. Can't post the link because low post count. Just search their site for "apn" and it will show up.
I switched to Cricket from Straight Talk (AT&T) last summer and don't regret it one bit. My bill is a flat $35/mo, coverage is great, no issues with SMS/MMS (my main reason for ditching ST). They just upped the low tier limit to 1GB from 500MB, but I'm on WiFi 99% of the time so it didn't matter much to me anyway.
Aio's capped speeds still apply, 8Mbps for LTE, 4Mbps for HSPA+. After you hit the data cap those speeds are 128Kbps and 64Kbps. I've only hit my cap twice, and my phone was still usable on LTE. You can purchase an extra GB for $10 as many times as you want.
Their account app actually works, customer service is top notch (the other reason I ditched ST).
If you're not a speed queen, and are in an area with good AT&T coverage I would absolutely take Cricket over ST.
I've had Aio/Cricket for a while now. Overall, I'm satisfied. My biggest issue is the occasional MMS outage and the lack of any kind of communication about it.
One year ago I had cricket wireless on a Huawei Android phone. I live in Florida and the data rates were pathetic, seriously between 40kbit and 120kbit.
However, Muve Music app was decent. Can't believe they are selling it to Deezer.

Thanks for the info above.
Follow-up questions. Any observations regards to how well Cricket works with Hangouts and/or Google Voice?
And any issues with tethering on Cricket?
I could sign up for a month to test myself, but I want to port my number at the same time I sign up for Cricket. I've heard there are problems porting phone numbers from ST to Cricket if you try to do it later (I'm employing extra caution as I've never previously ported a number).

Hangouts and Google Voice work fine for me. As well as any other carrier. Cricket doesn't officially support tethering, but I have had no issues doing it with a small change in the settings DB.

I disagree. CS has been far from top notch. Wait times were horrible and I got disconnected multiple times to resolve a billing issue where my debit card didn't have an address or name associated with it so it got denied but still went through as pending and didn't have phone service because of it. I called in a total of about 10 times on a Sunday and each time I got hung up on or the call dropped.
That sounds like straight talk cs

I only use Google voice/hangouts integration for texts and it works great... the reason I left straight talk a long time a go is they close ports after they've been idle for a while. Ie if I haven't sent or received a hangout in x amount of time they close the port and I won't get any more messages unless I reset my connection yo Google or use Wi-Fi... It was really annoying when I relied on push through gv and hangouts and never used normal texts...
Plus the service has been out standing for be single aio days.

That's weird, that was my experience with ST. MMS wasn't working on my Nexus 5, and their only answer was that my phone didn't support MMS and that I had to buy a new phone from them. I told them that it had worked fine on T-Mobile (I switched because I was moving to an area with no T-Mobile service). The reps were rude and ignorant.
When I switched to Cricket Straight Talk messed up porting my number. They had somehow generated a cancel request on their end, but still released the number, so Cricket wasn't able to pick it up. I went to a Cricket corporate store and they did everything they could to help fix it. One of the reps even called me on her day off to help try to fix it. Eventually I lost the number and had to start my account with a new one, but the store reps jumped through hoops to help me out. They even gave me credit for a month of service for the problem that ST caused.
The only other time I had to call tech support was to get some account information changed. It took all of 5 minutes, including hold time, and the rep was really nice and straight forward.

Tethering on Cricket?
Appreciate the feedback.
I'm holding off moving from ST to Cricket until I can obtain clarification on the following two items:
1. If there are any issues with 'tethering' on a Cricket prepaid plan. I occasionally need to tether my laptop to my Lollipop N5 and so far have not observed any issues doing so on ST..
(It has been reported T-Mobiles newly announced pre-paid plans do NOT allow any tethering.)
2. Since I will lose roaming with Cricket, I don't know.if that will impact me or not. How can I tell if with my recent ST usage, if I was always/mostly connecting to AT&T towers, or if sometimes I switched to roaming on Verizon and/or T-Mobile towers? I want to be certain that most of my recent local connections were to AT&T towers, especially at my residence and general vicinity (rural area 10 miles from town).
In regards to CS, with Cricket having a store not too far from me, I figure most of my CS interaction will be via their store. So that should beat ST non-existent CS (after all, ST is Tracfone in Walmart clothing).

I've tethered a few times and never had any problems. But admittedly it's rare.
If you have an att ST SIM then you were only on ATT. If you had a tmobile ST sim then you were only on T-Mobile. And the nexus 5 doesn't support Verizon, so you definitely weren't roaming there either .

Hmm...it's been suggested in this thread and elsewhere that ST supports roaming. Maybe I'm confused on this.
Is there a diff in how roaming works for voice/text service versus data service, as far as ST is concerned?
And how would that differ from what Cricket offers (or doesn't offer)?

Duh! On a non-XDA thread I recently read, It was suggested roaming would be lost if I moved from ST to Cricket. Now I understand that info was bogus. So it appears I have had no roaming capabilities and thus have been connecting via AT&T facilities all along. That has been a satisfactory experience for me. Although I do only occasional texting, so not sure if ST texting has been working efficiently.
I have the AT&T SIM that came with the ST BYOB kit purchased at Walmart. So besides buying a $0.99 SIM from Cricket, setting up the N5 on Cricket should hopefully be straight forward.
First, I need to gain a bit more confidence that tethering won't be an issue. If tethering is ok I'll make the jump.
Also I think I should first sign up for a new Google Voice number to minimize porting issues (present and future). After I got my N5 set-up on ST last year I wasn't using my old Google Voice number so Google expired it on me last month. Darn me.
