Not really digging it. Hard to get a non blurry shot with this thing. Takes way to long to snap a pic.
I also miss Macro mode.
Hope some software updates help the camera. From what I've read, the International versions were awesome.

My snaps are instant...no processing time what so ever...I can just continuiusly snap pictures if I wanted. ..so not sure what you mean about it taking long
My photos are hardly blurry either...just one tap to focus and im good to go...sometimes dont even need to focus
And for macro whats the use? This thing can do macro without that setting...it takes better close up shots than any other phone ive ever used
And its not just me...everyone I show my pictures to are all amazed by the clarity and detail...idk maybe I got lucky with a good device as I seem to have no issues others are having...only issue ive had so far is with snapchat yesterday but that seemed to clear its self up

I can literally count to 4 before it snaps a picture. If someone moves then forget it. Tons of blur.
I can't take closeup pics. Won't focus in that close.

The camera on this thing is amazing. I'm coming from a galaxy nexus so maybe that's why.
If you leave it on Auto it snaps pics blazing fast. Put it on HDR and they're still decently fast, but it "processes" them afterwards.
Also, depending on your lighting will also affect the speed at which it takes pictures because it's leaving the "shutter" open longer to capture more light on to the sensor. Use a flash in low-light to help with this.

Something is seriously wrong... Try to reset your camera settings. If its still taking that long to even process a picture something is definitely wrong with your unit. Bad shots or not, it does not take almost 4 seconds to process a shot.

It seems to me that a lot of the people that claim problems with their S4s are the same people over and over again. Yet others, claim little or no problems.
So, it would seem that either the problems are specific to certain devices or for whatever reason, people are just trying to shine a bad light on the S4 in general. I think the evidence (so far) suggests that certain phones, indeed, have certain problems.
Complaining about the problems do help, as it lets others know that problems they are experiencing might not be specific to their device only. However, it doesn't shine any light on the issue. So here is what I propose.
If you are one of the people that are claiming bad lag or other problems with your S4, start a thread that allows people to associate their username with their S4 (and all of the problems you are having) and make sure to list your purchase date, build#, current firmware, and any mods (rooting, etc...) that you have done to the phone. Also list where the phone was manufactured and any other details that might set it apart.
Also, do the same if you claim to have no or little issues with your S4.
Hopefully, a pattern might emerge showing that certain phones (lots, firmwares, builds, etc...) are the problem and others are not.
This seems to be better than making another 20 threads about the same old stuff with no idea as to why it is happening. Anyway, it's just an idea.
Mine is flawless it beat everyone else's phones and even point and shoots yesterday someone's prom and I was asked to be the photographer at last min and my DSLR was at home 45min away so I used my phone and it was pretty good enough it took amazing pictures!

Compared to HTC One, I also found GS4 camera to lag for a second after tapping before photo was actually taken.
For that matter, GS3 AND GALAXY NEXUS were faster than my GS4.
can't get any better than this.... Took these last Saturday the 1st day the phone came out
I live in New York City and have taken numerous, non blurry shots with this phone. The shutter speed is indeed slower than the HTC One (which my girlfriend owns), but it's easily remedied by holding still a bit longer.
Here are some shots...
Keep in mind the shot of Barclays is 9MP while the shot of One World Trade and the GTR were taken off of Facebook (and may have been cropped) since they're some how no longer in my SD card. Also the latter two were taken while I was driving so they're remarkably in focus.
Have you removed the plastic from the lens? It's very hard to see and pretty tough to remove. But that could be your problem with the focus issue.

Yeah without showing us some pictures you have taken. or a video showing this. We won't really be able to compare or diagnose this situation. I am currently running leaked version of 2.2 for my Captivate and the stock android camera app doesn't seem to work while on a voice call. I also encountered the same problem when I was running stock firmware out of the box. When I open the stock android camera during a voice call the app launched with a pop up message stating: Warning unable to start camera during call. Is this some restriction put in place from the carrier or the camera application?
i have had the same exact problem as you... there has litterly been thousands of times recently where i am talking to somebody on the phone, and then i have the sudden urge to take a picture, but havent been able too... hopefully somebody gets right on this pronto!
EDIT: okay ill admit, that was a crapload of sarcasm there... but who is in that big of a hurry to take a picture?
yeah that through me off too when I got the phone, about the only thing the phone won't do during a call. but it was always that way.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using Tapatalk
It is not about being in a hurry to take a picture it is about freedom to do what you want when you want with the device you purchased.
works fine on any other android device. seems like a carrier or manufacturer limitation to me.
download vignette, or most likely any camera app other than the stock captivate app, works.. now you can drive while talking on the phone and taking pictures all at the same time
But you cannot record in 720p. And the interface doesn't match the quality of the stock app.
So that makes it seem like its absolutely the camera app itself. Why would this limit be placed? For driving like i have a leg suggested? Even if that was the intentent, who placed it? Samsung? AT&T? Does this same problem happen when using a non Captivate, Samsung created firmware?

what you never had a conversation with someone and saw something that was interesting and wanted to send them a text/email with a picture while still on the phone? I honestly have tried it for that reason and was disappointed. I mean you can check texts and emails while talking as well as send them and surf the web and get directions, all things that I do whole on the phone. so why not take pictures to attach to those messages?
I hope a workaround or good third party app becomes available.

I'm almost positive it's a Samsung thing. This has really bugged me for a while too, I was so used to taking pictures on my iPhone 3G anytime. My friend with a Samsung feature phone couldn't take pictures with low battery while my iPhone would click away until it was dead.
Once I got my Captivate and tried taking a picture with low battery, not like the battery life is great to begin with, and I wasn't allowed. Samsung shouldn't be able to decide when we can take pictures. I really hope that at some point we can take pictures and this device will be unlocked from Samsung's grips that much more.
Whenever I take a picture under any kind of artificial light I get bright yellow/orange spot at the center which also shows up in pictures.
My buddy has a vibrant which does not have this problem. I know cell phone cameras act funny in artificial light and I have tried changing white balance from auto to different settings but no luck...
just went to tmobile store to exchange it but they said this is a known software issue which will be fixed soon...
I'm running latest GB leaks and the issue is still there so I don't know about that...

Anyways, like what everybody says, your best bet would be to get yourself a replacement. Maybe you should try changing the camera app through SGS Tools.
Thanks a lot for the help guys, just got back from the store with a replacement and guess what, this one also has a YELLOW SPOT. Its not as prominent but its still very noticeable. No one else has this problem if you take a picture of white background?

I have same problem with me and my wifes phone. If you take a picture of a white wall or white paper under incandescent light you can see a orange hue srtarting from the center and fading out. It works fine under fluorescent or natural light. I think these phones have a super cheap Chinese camera in them. Just gonna go with gs2 soon. This phone has been awsome for the most part but signing a new 2 year contract for the gs2 is a simple solution for me.

I'm going to speculate it is a rear camera issue. The front facing camera does not have this problem. A good way to check your camera for this problem is to turn up the contrast/saturation/sharpness all the way up. You will REALLY see it if you haven't noticed it before.
I have this issue too. If anything, it is an issue with this phone itself. I will tell tmo and hopefully get a nexus prime.
Whenever someone sends me a photo messages, it comes out extremely small, like 20x20 pixels... What's going on?

I get this this sometimes too. The times I get it is when someone with an iPhone takes a screenshot with the Power/Home combo. Pic always looks tiny. I'm running CleanROM 4.5 if that matters.
Does the same on stock. Seems to be like the post above and only happens from iPhones.
There is no such thing as a greener grass.......,......
seems to only happen when i get screenshots from iphones as well, sometimes they come thru fine and sometimes they dont
Weird! Never pinned it down but this has been exactly my experience as well.

do hedgei's take to a ball?
I adopted a 5 month old African Pygmy 3 weeks ago. She lets me pick her up without balling up and I give her a treat, but after that she just wants to get back into her igloo. I bought a large exercise ball for her to go anywhere she wants without getting into trouble, but she just goes in circles inside the ball.
Will she ever get used to the ball and learn how to use it? I am thinking that she wasn't handled very much in her young life, as she just wants to hide. Am I expecting to much too soon?
Thank you. "
I hope the mods wake up early and handle you.
I'm having the same issue. In my case it happens when my girlfriend sends me a screen shot from her GS3 and the same thing happens with my friend when he sends me screen shots from his HOX. We are all on AT&T with their respective branded devices. Not that I think it matters what carrier branded devices the screen shots are coming from.
From my experience with this issue, it seems that it only happens with someone sends me a screen shot. It's very random as well.
Could it be possible that screen shots are saved as an incompatible file type? If they are compatible, could it be a proxy setting?

I think we're on to something here. Perhaps there's a piece of code somewhere that tricks the phone into thinking it needs to resize .png files to a specific size, but has an error that causes it to show up as 20x20 pixels.

I've been keeping an eye on this forum and it's basically become abandoned. It's pretty obvious no one is working on root, the bootloader frenzy is clearly over (though I had emailed the guy and he did say it was coming back but i'm not getting my hopes up), and no one has any idea about a 4.4.2 update. I love this phone as far as how it's run for me and all the specs, the active notifications are great, the OK Google now is awesome but it sucks when you follow Android news every day and you keep seeing all these other devices getting new stuff and new phones and the phone we have is barely a year old and has nothing new or exciting. I've even noticed the droid razr (when rooted) is running 4.4.2 and people are still having fun with it. So.......has anyone heard anything or has any suggestions for keeping our phone relevant to the conversation of development? Especially to those of us less fortunate that don't have root or a unlocked bootloader?
What do these new devices have that you need? A heart rate scanner? Fingerprint scanner? Crap ton of bloat? Unnecessary specs that do nothing but kill battery life? Meh.

I got to say I think the camera on this phone is phenomenal. I got my wife what I thought was a good nikon coolpix last year (350 bucks), but the ultra takes equally good pictures. the nikon has better zoom (26x optical) but the ultras' camera is more responsive and the burst shooting is better than the nikon.

Yes, auto is the default. HDR has nothing to do with the gesture to launch the camera. It stands for high dynamic range imaging. Usually it's used to enhance photos in tough light. Traditionally a photo is taken with three images, one with normal exposure, one overexposed and one underexposed. The overexposed shot can show highlights in shadows, and the underexposed shot can show details in bright backgrounds. The three images are merged and can show details where you usually can't see them.
I don't know if the Ultra/Mini/Maxx actually takes three quick shots or if they are just using a filter, but I do know that having the HDR mode on can make the camera take longer to find focus - which is why I suggested turning it off.

Good luck. Most new devices are going to be harder and harder to unlock and/or root. Why anybody would buy a device that's not a nexus and be disappointed with the stock overlay is making a mistake day one. Buy a device you want to use stock and see if it gets root/unlock. Otherwise buy developer editions or change providers and buy a nexus.

I kinda agree.. It's a little dull compared to other reviewers/review videos. It didn't really grab my attention at all. Plus there is not a single close up shot of the device and 360 camera (which is present in every single good review of a device) it's just you sitting at a table talking about it. It needs more b-roll, more close-ups of the device showing its features/design etc.. I would recommend watching more reviews from your AC buddies, Mr Mobile, MKBHD etc if you're looking to become a "personality". Sorry, that's just my opinion and some constructive criticism.

Ya the clapping was just for fun to see how it reacted with people i am taking it out. Tried to keep the energy a bit down on this one so i could get my thoughts out clearly. Usually a bit more animated. The software is just stock android and they need to make a few more tweeks to make it a bit more usable IMO. It works well but could be better.

Ya the 360 video i already did and think i linked it in the video i may have to check that. did not want to rehash to much if i had it in another video. I wanted more footage and b roll but TBH this was done a day before i had to leave to go and get married last weekend lol. Last 2 weeks have been all wedding no time to film much of anything but i am working on that side of it for sure. I'm slowly trying to build my own "brand identity" where its not only about tech. example be on the lookout from my Hawaiian island videos that will be coming in the next month. Gonna do some fun shooting and storytelling in them
It's OK. But you're a bit late to the party--the reviews that were going to sway anyone came out over the past couple of weeks. At this point, you need to work outside the box to bring something novel to your review...or it's just going to be more noise.
