[GUIDE] How to root Samsung Galaxy S4 (GT-I9505 and GT-I9500) - Galaxy S 4 General

Let's move on!
There is several methods of achieving root access on SGS 4 and several guides on this subject, but for sake of simplicity we
will use here easiest and simplest way.
Recognized xda developer Dan Rosenberg (@djrbliss) has recently published his exploit for
series of Motorola devices but it's obvious that this exploit works on wide range devices including SGS 4 by exploiting vulnerability in /dev/graphics/fb0.
For more detailed information about how motochopper works please read post from SW686 here on xda forum.
I'v tested this method on SGS 4 (GT-I9505) with Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 but it should work on GT-I9500 with Samsung Exynos processor.
Software build on which exploit was tested is XXUAMDF.
Advantages of this method to achieve root access on SGS4 are following:
No need to flash trough ODIN.
Simple one click method.
1. First make sure that You have samsung adb drivers installed! If not please download and install them from here or install Samsung Kies application which will also install adb drivers.
Senior xda member daerragh has provided very nice tutorial how to do it.
2. Download motochopper exploit from here and place it on Your Desktop.
3. Unzip motochopper with Your favorit archiving program or simply by using windows bulit in funcionality (Extract all)
4. Enable on Your phone USB development mode
Open up your device’s “Settings->Click on More as shown on picture 1 and then select About device”.
At the “About” screen, scroll to the bottom and tap on “Build number” seven (7) times.
Make sure you tap seven times. If you see a “You are now a developer!” message pop up, then you know you have done it correctly.
By tapping on “Build number” seven times, you have unlocked USB debugging mode on Android 4.2 and higher.
You can now enable/disable it whenever you desire by going to “Settings” -> “Developer Options” -> “Debugging” ->” USB debugging”.

}
5. Connect Your SGS4 to computer via USB cable.
6. Verify that Your USB drivers are installed correctly by opening command prompt (press windows key + r) and navigate to the folder in which
You extracted motochopper.
Code:
cd C:\users\{username}\Desktop\motochopper\
In cmd prompt type
Code:
adb devices
If Your cmd prompts looks like this then You may proceed with next step.
If you don't have output from command adb devices which shows Your device check Your Samsung driver installation, check connectivity (try replacing cable) etc.
7. Time for grand finale, type in cmd prompt
Code:
run.bat
and follow instructions on the screen.
Feel free to post any suggestion or updates on this thread.

Yes, it recognized the device ID, but where your screenshot says "device," mine says "offline."
Device is recognized with no issues by Windows though, latest Samsung drivers installed.

You need to approve USB Debug connection on Your phone when You connect USB cable.
Device should present You with screen in which will ask You to allow connection with computer.

OK, fixed the "offline" bit, you need the latest adb drivers that support 4.2.2 and the RSA key. The script ran through to completion and the device rebooted. After the reboot, still no root...!
(See attached image.)

I believe that's the problem I'm running into, I'm running the latest "un-rootable" kernel. This method simply doesn't work in that case.

Can You please post exact kernel version which are u using, also which model You have I9505 or I9500?

LATEST it's UNROOTABLE for both models.....
This method is working on firmwares up to MDM, after that Kernel got locked,
no solution atm, custom kernel is needed if you want the latest one...
It's possible to root latest MDM firmware for i9505 with Modified CF-AutoRoot though.... it replaces Kernel and it can stay Official..

It should automatically push the SU.zip file onto your phone and you install the zip file by going into ClockworkMod Recovery. I will take a look at it tomorrow and see what's wrong.
Going to try this tonight. Backing up my apps with app2zip now. Once the zip uploads to dropbox I'll test this baby out.
I'm in the same boat as Warmonster. My bootloader is unlocked, but the root zip did't push anything.

★[8/27] [Casual] [Root, Unlock, Recovery] Vzw S3 Toolkit or 1-Click!![Up to MF1]★
DO NOT USE THIS IF YOU TOOK THE 4.3 UPDATE THIS WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE, THIS IS ONLY COMPATIBLE WITH FIRMWARES UP TO 4.1.2 MF1
First off BIG Thanks to Adam Outler for making CASUAL and Open sourcing it, and djrbliss for the motochopper root method!
Update: Have now Remade the Casual into more of a AIO Toolkit! Based off of adams initial idea back in the ICS days
this gives you the option to root, unlock your bootloader, flash a recovery of your choice and there is even reboot to download mode/recovery options
Fix's: New version 795b should fix device not shown as connected and misc errors
Disclaimer: This is only for the Verizon S3. DO NOT use this on any model other then the SCH-I535, as always im not responsible for anything that happens to your phone. This most likely will void your warranty.
Instructions to root/unlock/recovery:
1. enable usb debugging
2. put usb mode to mtp
3. Root Your phone with the root option (if you just want root stop here if u want to unlock bootloader and install a custom recovery continue)
4. verify root works aka go into SuperSu app and update Binary
5. flash the insecure bootloader (this unlocks the bootloader)
6. flash custom recovery of your choice (twrp, cwm, cwm touch all included)

Kingo Android Root is a well-designed, aesthetically pleasing application for Windows based computers that forgoes the device specific route, and offers rooting for a lot of Android devices from a variety of manufacturers. Supported phones include the likes of Google Nexus lineup, several HTC devices including HTC One, One X, One V, Droid Eris, Motorola Defy, a number of Samsung phones, popular LG devices and some smartphones from Sony. It offers a true one-click root experience, where you have to just download the application, install it, connect your device and click Root.
There are a few things that you need to be mindful of. When connecting your device, you need to have USB Debugging enabled in Android settings. There’s no requirement for pre-installed device drivers, as the software will take care of that for you. In fact, it will give you the Root option only after the drivers have been properly configured. Past that, all you have to do is hit the Root button, and let the application work its magic.
The app pushes SuperSU binaries which are slightly outdated, but get instantly updated to the new version thanks to Google Play. However, it won’t install a custom recovery, so that part you’ll have to take care of manually. Kingo Android Root supports Android versions up to 4.3.
Homepage: http://www.kingoapp.com/index.htm http://www.kingoapp.com/android-root.htm
How to Use the Kingo Android Root One-Click Tool
Step 1. Download the Kingo Android Root windows application and install it on your Windows desktop.
Step 2. Once the installation is finished, run the application and connect the device to the computer with USB cable to start the process. Now the application will install the latest drivers on your PC.
Step 3. This will take some time to install the drivers. Once the drivers are installed on your PC, you will see a new screen on your desktop with your device name and "ROOT" button. See the screenshot below:
Step 4. Hit the ROOT Button from the app screen to begin the root process on your device.
Step 5. Be patient. It will take some time to finish the process. Once the operation is completed, you will see the “Root Succeeded” message on your screen.
Your device should now be rooted. With the help of this application you can unroot your device as well. All you have to do is select the Unroot button and follow the onscreen instructions. For more help, check the application FAQ section Mod Edit here too..
**None of this is my material. This is the work of the Kingo team.**
A good and needed write up. Thanks beerdroid!

It's unclear what was causing the slowness, but after a while it finally all went through and my phone is now rooted. Thanks!
I did have to restart the App several times while it was downloading the update. That also seemed to be going very slowly. My download speeds wouldn't go above 100kb/s (consistently) and after a while the download will stop at a certain percentage. I would then have to restart the app, and then it would continue from the percentage but then stop at another percentage.
I have 25+ MBps connection, so I don't think it was my internet. It could have been the laptop though for slowness on both ends, downloading and communicating with the phone. I would have to look into it further though.
Anyways, thanks for responding to me!
Did you use any other devices via USB port? I know when I did mine I had to delete my USB drivers that way it would go faster and not unmount my gs4 all the time.

Nice one, will be helpful for noobies
Why is 4.1+ needed in this case?
Good job.
However doing this with Odin is much easier. Odin does the same.
Also Odin does not require installation like Kies and very less disk space.
And some devices like Galaxy y GT-S5360 are not supported by Kies.
It is not only for 4.1+
I used this 1-2 months back on my SGS+ I9001 to install Android 2.3.6 from 2.3.4
Anyway, keep it up!
this method does not apply for all devices
some do not support firmware upgrade and initialization like gt-n8000
yep

yes u are right... my GT-i9505 doesn,.t support initialisation... my device is already official but i want to make kies updates again...
1 silly question. will this method can be apply to old samsung device? i have samsung galaxy SL (gt-i9003) with CM11. thanks in advance
'GT-I9500' does not support initializing
iNITIALIZING MY DEVICE BREAKS ALL NETWORK CONNECTIVITY.IN MY CASE,
FOR EXAMPLE IF I WERE TO ENTER THE PRODUCT NAME AND SERIAL NUMBER OF MY SAMSUNG GALAXY S 111. KIES WOULD OFFER TO INITIALIZE MY PHONE WITH AN ANDROID 4,12 FIRMWARE THAT USES A MODEM/RADIO THAT USES AN EFS VERSION 1 PARTITION.
SINCE MY PHONEIS CURRENTLY ON ANDROID 4.3 AND CURRENTLY USES EFS VERSION 2 . GOING BACKWARDS TO THE OLD EFS STRUCTURE WILL CAUSE MY PHONE TO NO LONGER WORK AS A PHONE.ONLY WIFI WILL WORK
. WHEN I TRY KIES TELLS MR THAT IT WILL INITIALIZE WITH THE LATEST VERSION FOR MY PHONE PDA/MF6 /PHONE MA5/CSC MF1 (AFR) WHILE THAT FIRMWARE IS THE LATEST FOR (AFR) IT IS OLD AND ANY MODEM FOR GT-I9300 THAT PRECEEDED THE MG4 MODEM WILL NOT WORK UNLESS THE EFS FOLDER WAS BACKED UP AND THEN RESTORED AFTER REVERTING TO THE OLD EFS STRUCTURE.
THIS UNFORTUNATELY MAKES USING KIES TO INITIALIZE MY PHONE NOT AN OPTION.
Thx for this guide!
ML1 has a KNOX bootloader. You are doomed Nice guide but I prefer the old school Odin way!

Will this work for my AT&T I337 Stock MK2 Locked Boot loader ROM. I Followed the steps and it's telling me that it will restore to MDL ROM. Don't want to get that firmware upgrade error message. Thanks in advance
So I have an ace II ( Novathor phone like s3 Mini ) and I'm on Kitkat custom rom now.
Do you think this will work to come back to 4.1.2 official?

I dont hav experience with locked boot loaders and no idea about that. better i think you should accept that restore to MDL ROM i hope, because this method will restore to official stock like that comes from Samsung.
Question
Is there a way to determine what firmware is it installing?

TWRP 2.7.1.0 Galaxy Tab 4 7.0

Quote from General TWRP description by Dees_Troy:
Team Win Recovery Project 2.x, or twrp2 for short, is a custom recovery built with ease of use and customization in mind. Its a fully touch driven user interface no more volume rocker or power buttons to mash. The GUI is also fully XML driven and completely theme-able. You can change just about every aspect of the look and feel.
Recovery image for Tab 4 7.0 uses Linux kernel 3.10.0

Configuration for building: https://github.com/tgalal/android_device_samsung_degaswifi
Compiled kernel source for SM-T230_EUR_XX from http://opensource.samsung.com/
Install instructions:
For some reason odin 3.09 fails to flash the device. If it's the same case for you, you can give it a try with heimdall it works fine.
Extract the tar file then,
heimdall flash --RECOVERY recovery.img

Here is also another method by nointer. I haven't verified it though.
Feel free to submit changes/ report any bugs/enhancements
I was able to flash this and it booted into recovery just fine. I didn't try to flash anything or backup device yet. It looks like the external sd isn't working. It showed 500mb free for both internal and external. I had 2gb free on the card though, now we just need some cool ROMs
Woah.... Hold on there. Are we talking about the TWRP for the Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 (SM-T230NU). I thought it wasn't possible since it uses Marvell Hardware.

Can I use this TWRP for SM-T231 model?
Yyyiiii-haaaa!!!
flashed with adb, looks perfect!!! SM-T230 Wi-Fi
jic there's someone in need of exact instructions, here's how I did it (needs root)
extract the tar, put recovery.img on device's sdcard
adb shell
su
ls /dev/block/platform/soc.2/by-name/RECOVERY -l
<produces "lrwxrwxrwx root root 2014-07-28 13:34 RECOVERY -> /dev/block/mmcblk0p9>
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p9 of=/sdcard/original.recovery.img
dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p9
exit
exit
adb reboot recovery
c'est tout!

Most probably yes, no guarantees though as I don't have that device to test it out.

You HAVE to add an md5 to flash thru odin on this device. If its not in tar.md5 itll get stuck and eventually fail. I figured that out flashing my kernel

I have the S4 and it didn't have Knox until the latest 4.4 Android update and since then it hasn't stopped development, but it might have slowed it down. I don't care if my phone shows the Knox has been tripped for the kernel, recovery, or rom. So if they do implement it on the Tab 4, which I doubt they will (its more of a cheap device for normal people, not businesses), the worst Samsung has done is just scare us with telling us the warranty is void. I wouldn't worry. I doubt it really is coming. I haven't heard it from anyone, so don't take me word for or against it

Have you placed the kernel source at kernel/samsung/degaswifi? If you don't want to compile the kernel you can use a prebuilt one (u can extract it from my recovery.img), but then you need to set TARGET_PREBUILT_KERNEL in BoardConfig.mk instead of TARGET_KERNEL_SOURCE

They also break Allshare Cast. To be specific, it will immediately disconnect after you connect rather than stay connected like it should. Apparently it checks that the flash counter is set to 0 and if not then it will refuse to stay connected. Sadly nobody has come up with a patched version yet so the only solution is to wait for Triangle Away to support the Tab 4.
got root and now got twrp , sweet!!!
Just wondering, does it work with SD cards yet or does everything have to be done using internal memory?
can someone put up a step by step guide sorry i am a noob. i am rooted now i want to have a custom recovery. and then after that will we be able to have custom roms?
