S-Health is def a dissapointment - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 General

I had been looking forward to the S-Health walking function, always tracking your steps and showing you throughout the day. The problem is it never seems to work. It will constantly fluctuate the amount walked (showing 2000 steps one min and 800 the next), and the distance is always wrong (I walked 2 miles around Central Park, it showed 300 steps walked and .67 miles).
Not a deal breaker, but a pretty bitter disappointment to see this really doesnt work at all
Luckily MapMyRun still works great.

Really that sucks because S-Health works perfectly on my phone, maybe there's a problem with yours.

Mines pretty spot on for not using gps. I walked a 2.1 mile loop around my neighborhood and it normally registers between 2 and 2.2 miles.

Its probably because you have the cover..... It doesn't work well with the cover closed unfortunately. My wife has that problem....
Personally I love it because I am trying to lose weight so yeah..... hope that helps

But what's the point of it? I didn't use Exercise Tracker but the Walking Tracker just measures the amount of steps you've taken. Supposedly the default goal is 10,000 steps per day?
After using it for 3 days (I jog/walk my dogs daily), I don't see how this benefits me at all.
I use Cardio Trainer which keeps track of steps/time/pace/calories burned/GPS tracking (to show your path) as well as in-depth statistics even about the elevation on your path. I noticed a big discrepancy between the distance/steps taken vs the S-Health.

S-health tracks your steps, and your calories burned, distance walked. It is meant to be used all day, that is why it does not use gps. Apparently you have not looked at the graphs and other read outs it will give you. Not saying it is the greatest thing out there, but pretty effective

Oh I see. I've been pausing it when I don't actually jog, so maybe that's the problem. Does leaving this thing on burn your battery life (have you noticed)? I'm really surprised with the GS4's battery life. My HTC would barely last until 2 PM whereas my GS4 will literally last an entire day with the same type of usage. I unplug it at 7 AM and it doesn't go back in the charger until about 9 PM. I don't have any GPS/LTE tracking etc off.

No noticeabe drain. But I have only run it for half a day or so playing with it, or when I go for a run.

Yeah I think it's a nifty little tool to use if you're in to health. If it's not working for you maybe you walk weird.

I've got the same problem with s health. Gave up, installed accupedo and successfully logged 12k steps two days in a row.

My Battery Life Report - Feedback Welcomed

So I have been using Juice Defender Ultimate for a couple of days and also measuring stats with Juice Plotter.
My experience thus far has been that the addition of JDU hasn't really changed my stats. I would say it has helped slightly... At the end of an 8 hour day I am usually at around 65% I average approximately 4% battery drain per hour mostly with the screen off since I don't typically do much on my phone while at work. I'm sure the battery stats will improve with the addition of custom ROMs but was wondering if the 4% decrease per hour was pretty much standard across the board.
I happen to like the battery performance thus far but will admit that my Cappy was providing me with a remaining percentage of around 75% after an 8 hour day. Of course, that Cappy was on Gingerbread with a super tweaked rom that took advantage of every little ounce of conservativity. There really isn't much difference between 65 & 75 but I thought I would throw it out there to see what you all are experiencing.
Thoughts?

Get an HTC Inspire, you'll be down to 20% before lunch time, hehe. That was my last phone, was horrid. What's bad about 65% left after a full day? That sounds amazing to me... means you can go 3 days before recharge!

LMFAO! (hehe since you brought up 2000 I thought I'd give a 2000 acronym too, haha).

LOL @ some of these replies! Ok. I'll explain why I use JDU. I work in an area that's on the outskirts of AT&T's nearest tower. If am on the outer edges of the building, my service is so so. If I am in my office, which is more interior, my service is off & on. As soon as I walk outside, my service is decent. So, until AT&T increases their presence near our building, I will be faced with a dilemma. The radio on the phone will struggle to lock onto a signal all day long. Depending on where I am in the building, it can get really bad. This constant effort to acquire signal equates to increased battery drain. When I first purchased the Infuse on 5/20, I went back to work that afternoon and my battery had drained from 100% to 40% in less than 4 hours. I had experienced this with my Captivate so I knew it had to be the constant struggle to obtain signal.
The thing I really like about Superpower Beta (which I used and loved on my Cappy), Green Power, and JDU is that they are able to halt that constant struggle when the screen is off (as it is 90% of my time at work). This equates to a much more civilized battery drain. I suppose if I worked in a place where I always had 4 bars this wouldn't even be an issue. Hopefully this explains why I use it. Although JDU probably doesn't do much to "save" battery per say, I think it's invaluable in the way it cuts the communication when the screen is off which in my situation saves battery. I still get phone calls and text messages without issue (depending on where I am in the building). I also have it set to allow data for 5 minutes ever hour which helps.
Wow.. I got a little long winded..

[Info] Interesting reading on battery stats/calibration

So I came across this article while surfing the webs regarding battery calibration from Google Engineer Dianne Hackborn and thought to share it with anyone interested. It brings a lot more questions to mind after reading it, but I'm sure everyone will have a different opinion to the subject matter.

read something like that somewhere on xda. pretty interesting to think about all those battery calibration threads now...
so we just have to use up the battery completely and charge it completely to optimize the way the system manages power?
It makes one wonder, doesn't it? Heck, I've read where people on here are getting 2-3 days of battery life out of one charge with normal usage (yes, I know "normal" is subjective). I can barely get a day most of the time.
You can get days out of this phone, or less than a day. Depends on the screen on time.you're only gonna get like 5 hours max. screen usage.
Also look at your battery stats, if android os is at the top, that's a whole other issue that is caused by a few different things.

LOL. When I'm at home wifi is almost always on, which is draining. Wifi calls seem to almost always be on top, followed by display. I put the display brightness to the lowest level (unchecking auto, of course) and also uncheck the power saving mode as it will change the display brightness.
Haven't really tried going a day or so without wifi as I don't get great coverage @ home.

I've always gotten great battery life on my phone. I'm a light user and get 2-4 days regularly, and I've never calibrated my battery.
I usually just make sure my phone is fully charged whenever I flash roms, though that might not really do anything either, other than make sure the phone doesn't die when your flashing.
But I did notice an improvement after flashing the lightning-zap tweak though.
The non-effectiveness of deleting the battery log was discussed here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21011092&postcount=2
The links within the post provided some useful information on the fuel gauge chip and how it measures open circuit voltage in our phone.
It is a modern old wives tale. Let them waste their time calibrating.

same here. it seems that my phone only lasts around 8-9 hrs on a single charge. i wonder how some other people make it last for a day? this is the one big downside of android (not particularly this phone) for me. I just installed Tegrak Overclock Ultimate to under volt my CPU and slow down the battery drain. Hope that solves my problem (crossing fingers)

This phone is HOT

It's too hot to hold right now. I walked around my workplace and lost 4g. Nothing is running on the phone. I've lost 20% battery in the past half hour. Something is wrong :/

Not really worth posting... you are doing something to cause the cpu to run crazy.. the only time i have ever got it hot is in games or if im tethering for any extended period of time. Battery life will suffer horribly from this.. so far ive been able to drain this 2100mah Battery within 6 hours. Dont posts pointless babble plz.

It's possible the tower you're connected to is having issues, causing you to drop back to 3G which might also be having issues, causing your phone to fight for a signal.
Loss of signal makes everything go nuts on a phone. It pumps up the antennae to try and hold on to any signal it can see. This also increases the drain on the battery which generates heat on it's own.
In certain stores, I have to turn my phone completely off (sometimes I can get away with just turning off mobile data), as even maintaining a voice channel is running everything at full blast, murdering the battery and scorching me (not really, but it's still hot).
The phone's SOC should have a safety switch that will force it to power off if it gets TOO hot. Unfortunately for our comfort, too hot for electronics is MUCH higher than too hot for our skin.

It could be. I've never personally had occasion to pull a logcat, so I'm not sure what kind of information gets stored in there.
My phone also did this yesterday while idling except, I did lose 4G, it just wouldn't charge cause it said it was too hot and felt like it just came out of the oven (ofcourse it was mid 90's here yesterday) but IMO still shouldn't get that hot when not in use.
The information about signal should be available in logcat.
My GNex would do this. It would struggle to find a signal and heat up significantly as a result. Battery life suffered. This would happen in my office, but not at home where I have a better 4G signal.
Switching to WiFi at the office helped, but was not really a solution to the problem which certainly can occur when you don't have WiFi available.
As a note the GS3 doesn't do this for me, so it appears that the radios are better in this device. Doesn't help you much, but hey, it could be worse I guess.

All phones do this. There's a local grocery store that I swear uses a cell jammer, you get 20ft through the doors and a full 4G signal drops to nothing, not even 1xRtt, not even voice or sms. All throughout the store, until you walk out the door, then wide open signal again. I have seen my battery go down like 80% in an hour in there until I figured it out and started putting it in airplane mode when I go there.

Most buildings like grocery stores and such are built with steel framing, rather than the wood that gets used in regular houses. This creates a faraday cage effect when you walk through the doors. Depending on the construction, it can be very strong and effectively block most signal from getting in.
I have also seen this effect in manufactured homes/trailers, as they tend to use steel framing rather than wood.

Yes it's all do to the radio. Those of us, in a fringe area have to suffer tthrew this. If I'm at my house I can get 4G upstairs and 1x in the basement. This causes the phones battery to drain much faster and cause great issues. I recommend using a different kernel if you are comfortable with it. Also use deadline/smartass . It takes some tweaking, but it will help. No matter what we do we have to face the fact that 4G devices kill battery life.Your not going to get no more then 4 hours screen on time. I love the phone don't get me wrong but the only all day battery phone is the MAXX. I have one also and Motorola s radios are killer lol I wish I could stick my MAXX radios in this baby Another thing its download CPU spy , see if your phone is actually sleeping. It could be a rouge app , contributing to the problems to. I just picked up a 4500mah extended battery , it was the best 30 bucks I ever spent. Good luck and let us know if it was anything else then software related.

Plenty of us here can pull more than 4 hours of screen-on time in a single charge.

How warm do you guys let your phone get?

Hi everyone,
I'm about a week-long user of the M8 so far, and I'm loving it. I've been a fairly long time HTC user as well - I started with the Ozone, then fell back to a feature phone until I picked up the Incredible 2, which lasted for a long time.
At any rate, I'm no stranger to hot phones, literally. During my commute back and forth to work, I would use my Inc. 2 to record the drive with Dailyroads Voyager, while simultaneously monitoring road conditions with Waze. My good old Inc. 2 would power through those tasks like a boss, while at the same time burning up, and usually unable to pull enough power from the car USB charger. The only way to keep my phone stable was by running my car's defroster to blow cold air over the phone.
Now that I'm up to date hardware-wise, the M8 is no exception in the power house category. It can even keep charging while it's doing these things, although it does still get pretty warm. It's currently in a protective case which seems to dissipate the heat pretty well.
My question is, how warm do you guys let your M8 get? (Note: I'm rooted, but still running stock with no sort of overclocking involved.)
The only time I've ever had heat issues was when I mounted the phone to use as gps. And this was under direct 90 degree heat. Other than that, I've had no problems with heat whatsoever, even on prolonged lte usage and video watching.
My experience might be isolated though. I'd say, if your phone is uncomfortably hot to touch, you should probably ease up on it to be safe.

The only time I've ever had heat issues was when I mounted the phone to use as gps. And this was under direct 90 degree heat. Other than that, I've had no problems with heat whatsoever, even on prolonged lte usage and video watching.

Yeah, always with the GPS navigation it seems. I wonder if this is something that can be fixed software wise (I.E filling a bug report to Waze/DRV), or if it's more on HTC's end for software/hardware...
I would assume it was just the metal body absorbing direct sunlight but I might be wrong. My HTC rezound used to double as a portable heater the way it used to get hot with extended usage. This one doesn't seem to be like that though.
Usually only heats when running tether for a period.

That's been my experience from the Inc 2, as well. So it seems like the mobile radio may generate quite a bit of heat...
I recently accidentally let my M8 get too hot while listening to music with it laying in direct sunlight face up. Didn't think about the black screen absorbing so much heat, got so hot it went into safety shut-off. It was almost too hot to touch, but after a couple minutes off it was relatively cool and turned back on fine with no problems or battery issue.
Low 40s Celsius is when I start to get uncomfortable. It's still safe, I just simply don't like it that warm. I get mad when my OC'd Intel cpu hits 60c even though 75+ is fine. I'm just anal about temps I guess

As hot as it wants, it'll turn off by itself if it ever reaches critical temperatures

My Car mount clips onto the AC vents so my phone is always cool (I block some of the air through. Too cold isn't good either(

I agree that the only time (and it was only once) my unit got hot was while I was using it in its car mount and GPS was on. Otherwise I have seen none of the heart issues that plagued my Rezound and my Incredible.
My name's Harold and I'm a flashaholic....
I usually put it in preheated to 400 degrees and flip halfway through at 10 minutes.
Suits my needs.

But really though, I keep her around 451°F

If you're rooted, install XPosed and than install "CPU Temp in StatusBar" to keep really good track of the temps. Mine doesn't ever get over 110F, even under hard WiFi and streaming use. I've never used it for GPS in the car. At idle, it sits under 80F.

Thank you, I've been looking for a CoreTemp-like feature for my phone. I'll give this a try!
I've been hammering on my new m8 (swapping roms, installing massive amounts of apps, running tests, playing games ) for over a day and the phone has never gotten beyond lukewarm. Nothing close to what my m7 used to do
I never look at the temp. It will auto throttle if it gets too hot anyway. Just use the phone how you want and don't worry about it...
Well, I gave the temp monitoring thing a try (very cool!) and I don't think my phone ever passed 65 degrees Celsius, which I guess is ok. So no worries it seems!
That's a hundred and forty nine degrees F. Lol you need more ac.

I think I'm still doing better than your 451 degrees

Pedometer - am I doing something wrong?

Got a Gear S3 recently and so far I'm loving it, but I'm having some issues with the pedometer feature through S Health not being accurate. I've tested it a time or two by taking 20 or so steps and then checking it and it appears accurate, but then other times I know it is way off. This morning for instance I woke up and walked over to my bathroom which is maybe 15 steps at most and when I looked it was reporting 68 steps already on the day. Other times I'll look at it early in the morning and see it showing a few hundred steps when I've only walked downstairs to grab a cup of coffee or something.
Is there anywhere I should be entering settings or calibrating it or something? S Health has my correct stats (age, height, weight, etc.)?
I just did a test: from my office to the restroom is about 28 steps (counted). I was at 800, when I got to the restroom I was at 826 and when I got back to my office it was 857. I would say that is pretty high level of accuracy.
Are you sleeping after midnight? Did you get up during the night?
There have been a couple of firmware and app updates for the S3 and the S Health app, I would make sure that those are updated.

Thanks for the reply. I don't typically get up at all during the night (unless I'm sleepwalking lol). I too have tested and most times it is accurate, but there are times when I know it is not. I'm guessing there must me some sort of movements I'm making with my arms or something that are triggering it. I'll start watching it a little closer just to see.

Has to be something I'm doing. Last night I went to bed at 10:30, woke up at 5:00 and before I even got out of bed it showed 18 steps on today.

Are you wearing it while sleeping?
Is the band loose?
Mine appears pretty accurate. I keep the watch "lightly snug" to my wrist. I don't like it loose enough to flop back and forth, but I don't like a death grip either.

Same here. It's tight enough it doesn't really move, but it isn't leaving marks on my arm from being too tight either. And yes, I wear it while sleeping.
Gear S3 pedometer doesn't match S7 Edge pedometer.
I have a job which requires me to run a lot. I wear my Gear S3 throughout my shift and always have my S7 Edge in my pocket.
According to my S7 Edge, I run about 15,000 steps per day, but according to my Gear S3, I run around 12,500.
Eber since I linked the two, it doesn't update with each step but rather updates every minute or so, so I can't keep track of it as easily. When I only had the S7, it was live tracking and was accurate every time I checked, so it seems the Gear S3 is missing quite a bit if my steps throughout the day.
I did a hike today with my Gear S3 and it tracked 20,038 steps (on my wrist) whereas the pedometer on my Blackberry Priv shows about 18,166 steps (in my hip pocket). But the hike was flat for about two miles and then up some rather steep switchbacks for another 2 miles.
I've had a fitbit, 2 garmin (vivoactive HR & Forerunner 235) and my S3. All seem to do a nice job counting steps while walking, but only the S3 does the job on an elliptical. I often get on my elliptical in the evening to punch up my steps to 20-25k and in so doing, so I don't gt lost in the exercise for more than an hour, I'll count my steps while riding the elliptical. The accuracy is uncanny. I don't really pay attention to my running or walking steps in a similar manner, as I'm happy with my results.
In my opinion, you have to take these fitness trackers with a grain of salt. Each has a weakness, HR is the weakest on the S3, IMO, but as long as I have other matrix to gauge my performance I am happy.
I love the look of the S3 over the other smart watches I've had over the lat 6 months and I've learned there are just some things it might not do exactly meet our expectations. It's how you feel you can adapt that will make the difference.
All my opinion, be sure you're up to date on your (grains of) salt today.
My Samsung Gear S3 pedometer show 93% wrong. 15 756 real steps are 14 795 steps on Samsung Gear S3 watch. Nearly 1000 steps less. If dayly steps is important Fitbit is better/perfect.

Did you count your 15,756 steps? Not saying the S3 is more or less accurate, but I've heard fitbits will count steps when reaching for your mail, or drinking coffee. I think it's best to use 1 step counter and the steps are all relative

This issue drives me nuts! I already had my watch replaced one time for this issue. Now the new one seems to be just as bad. This morning I got up, (dont wear the watch at night), Put it on, walked 17 steps, and it read 192 steps! Its stupid. I like everything else about it but the step counter is worthless. I know its accurate at times, but errors like this just take away any accuracy that it might have. With my first watch, it logged over 200 steps while I was standing in one place getting dressed.
Its stupid.

I have the same concerns. What I noticed is it's much more accurate the longer you walk. Could be GPS based and it needs a better sample. Try using your phone and your watch to measure steps or distance for several hours then compare. Mines usually just a tiny bit off with a 3 mile distance. Not enough to worry about for me.
I'll add in my two cents. These are comparisons while wearing bat at the same time. S3 frontier and fitbit charge2.
