[Q] CronosX RC2.1 app2sd - Milestone XT720 General

Hi Guys,
I'm loving the CronosX RC2.1 rom, but it has one problem: I can't move my largest apps (like WhatsApp) to the SD card. There are but a few apps where the Move to SD button is not greyed out. When I install the CM7 mod it all works well.
Please help. I really like the speed of the CronosX mod, but this is a dealbreaker.

Guess I'll stick with CM7 then
Well since nobody seems to know the answer, I'll stick with CM7, even though it's sluggish and slow on this phone.
By the way, I've tried getting the overclocking to work, so I've tried modding the init.mapphone_umts.rc, and editing the scripts in init.d. The scripts in init.d seem to never load at all (for instance /proc/overclock is never actually created, and no changes made to the script 10overclock ever actually get updated to the device). Furthermore, there seem to be several lines in the init.mapphone_umts.rc that are duplicated just a few lines lower, and overclock.ko never gets loaded.
Anyhoo, it was a nice try.

I'm not asking for actual support, I was hoping there would be people with some experience with this phone. I'm betting there are still enough people who use what you call an outdated phone.

I switched to Cronos x since you mentioned it, its fast and sometimes crashes the camera, native app2sd sucks in this ROM. You have to install Link2sd as a system app and then install all your apps. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1519857&highlight=link2sd&page=26
If you like GB, this is a great rom not as fast but very stable. This and CM 6.3.7 are the best for me.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2181727

I've since switched to CM (too slow for my liking) and after that back to rooted stock, but the lack of functionality is really starting to bug me Thinking of switching back to CronosX and trying out the link2sd "hack". I've tried about 10 roms for my xt720 now and I still like CronosX the best, expecially now that I know how to fix the SD problem. Thanks for the info.

Need more Speed

i am using Motorola Milestone with MIUI ROM, Overclocked to 1.2GHz, 1GB EXT partition and 300MB Swap partition.
i want to know that how can i usee my swap partition as virtual RAM for my mobile. is there any app for that or any tweak. plz tell.
the milestone kernel does not support swap and since the bootloader wont be unlocked, it propably wont work ever. if you want a fast rom, i would recommend the newest cm7 or the froyomod 2.7. miui has a high memory demand, so its not very fast.
Just as papadawgg already said: Miui is a good looking ROM, it isn't build to be fast. If you want a fast ROM I can recommend you 3 different ROM's. Sorted from fastest to slowest:
1. TheFroyoMod by 89luca89: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=815595 FroYo
2. CM6 by Milaq: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1155454 FroYo
3. CM7 by nadlabak/kabaldan: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=941346 Gingerbread
Either leave MIUI and use one of listed by eXtink, or get a new phone. As simple as that
(you can also learn to live with MIUI and all the goodness it brings)
Also Cronos Ginger is a very fast rom. Google for it.
But, the most that i love is iceandfire. It has the features from CM7 (it IS built on CM7 by nadlablak) and almost the speed from FroyoMod.
The fastest ROM is Telus lite but it's very old and it's not gonna be updated.
You can use zeppelinrox's script to make some changes to the memory management.
So, my phone: iceandfire 3.0 + zeppelinrox's memory management script (with 8-26-28-28-30 values) + go launcher (or adw launcher) + 1gb ext partition + interactive governor + 250 (min) to 1000 (max) ghz cpu speed + 42 vsel = supreme milestone.
PS: i tested ALL the roms available for milestone.
Well,if you tested all roms for Milestone, then why on your list is not CM6 by Milaq, which is one of the best rom?For good rom it is not only important that it is fast when you call someone or open menu.Gingerbread roms just not work well on Milestone because of lack of RAM.Large apps, like navigation apps and HD games will be closed because of RAM.CM6 by Milaq is Gingerbread rom on Froyo kernel,so it have enough RAM for large apps and Gingerbread looks and feel with plenty CM7 functions.

Accually... I find the CM Roms even more laggy and unusable then Miui. And I've accually got my Miui running pretty well accually with a nice theme on it.
Try checking out this. It helps A TON. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991276
Miui accually runs pretty fast compared to CM on my Milestone.

cm6 by milaq is a great rom. eXtink already mentioned it in a previous post.
Should i post a movie with my phone running the latest iGO? Or playing a HD game?
No offence...
Could we just keep the development forum for developpers ?
No rush for this thread but I like to give my daily visit to the forum and I keep seeing more and more questions in this forum but no developpers's news
I mean that in the general section this kind of answer would be found don't worry ^^
Cronos 1.4 is very very fast. What do you guys think the best rom for battery life is?
The best ROM for battery life is FroyoMod 2.6.1 or CM6

Whowhooaa! Hold on to your pantyhose there cowboy! Smoking guns is not what we're looking for.
If we're talking about memory friendly ROMs where you can actually multitask, and I mean multitask, not run GMail and MMS app at a time, I mean GMaps and Camcorder at once multitask, then Telus 5.2 is the ROM to have. Even though it is Eclair, it is fast and offers a very good memory management.
Next on the list, but not as good as Eclair from the multitasking standpoint, it's CM6, but it has a major flaw from my POV. The camcorder freezes once in a while while recording in High quality. However, this issue can be solved my modding the media_profiles.xml file to look more like the stock Froyo (here's my post on that http://techmobility.blogspot.com/2011/08/motorola-milestone-how-to-make-best-of.html ). CM6 is smoother than Telus, but not so memory efficient.
But CM7 is at the bottom of the list here for both speed and memory management. It's slow as hell, and you can barely run 2 apps without the homescreen dying on you. Maybe the slowness is caused by the high memory consumption, who knows.
Maybe now that Google bought Motorola, we'll be seeing our bootloader unlocked and we'll be able to properly mod our Stones.

Hey OP,
There are a ton of "roms " posted for the milestone which ate developed by reputable people. The thing is though you're going to have to test out each rom and tweak them to your own phone. For example the latest release by HO!NO! Is possibly the only Tom that acts like my phone is running at 1GHz when its actually clocked at 800MHz. Another thing is I normally scrap the default launcher or launcher pro for GO launcher and the SMS app for GO SMS.
Any way just make a nandroid and try all of them before you decided what seems to work the best for your phone. For a fact no one on this board is going to know your phone as well as you do. Experiment and log what works and doesn't that log will help you later down the line when you finally settle with what you think works best.

IMHO, the best combination of speed and memory(or should I say compromise) is CM6. Eclair doesn't eat up that much RAM, but it's not as snappy as Froyo/GB, Froyo is snappier than Eclair but eats more RAM, and I am sure that GB would shine on a swap enabled kernel, but that's just not the case here.

[Q] Need help after upgrading to android 2.2

Hi,
I recently installed Dexter's rom on my xt720 as I wanted to use the app2sd. All went well except I realized there was less memory available now then before.
About 50 megs only now and I think it was more in the 70 to 80 megs free before.
Is there a better ROM to install or some options I can tweak to make it as fast as it can, I already changed my sdcard to a level 10 one and that alone is a nice start for recording videos but I would like to play games on it and it's not that great right now with this free RAM.
Thx for the help, there is a lot of infos on this site but I'm afraid I need some directions!

Dexters ROM has been known to have RAM issues and with use it will slowly go down even further. There are many newer ROM's available which you could try out. Specifically The Hellmonger XDA special or Mioze7Ae's CM6. If you are a hardcore gamer, which these ROM's you can activate swap and use applications like chainfire 3D which will allow you to play most games you want. If this is what you choose to do, then we will give you more instructions on how to go about it.

If you want probably one of the most stable ROMs in my opinion, then u have to try the Wanhu Epic SteelBlue. AFAIK, it has no memory issues and plays games smoothly with rare force closes and till today no random reboots. it supports app2ext and link2sd if im not wrong. Hope that helps!
I finally went with the MiuiXt_Final_V2 and it's running much better, with plenty of ram available.
Three questions though : I have no sound when recording a video, is it normal and is there a fix?
The swap works fine, but do I have to fastboot the phone every time I reboot it, using my computer and all?
I'm starting to figure how things work....!
Thx

Thats great. MIUI is supposedly the fastest ROM along with CM6 and it does have alot of cool features. I haven't used it since the beta phase, and I believe the stock moto camera application was ported to the phone so you shouldnt be having any trouble with the sound. It would make more sense if you ask on the MIUI thread as people who use it will guide you better with the quirks on that ROM.
Unfortunately yes you have to fastboot everytime the phone reboots. The reason for this is swap uses a custom kernel. The kernel is that peice of computer language which communicates between your hardware and software. Our phone has a locked bootloader which inturn prevents us from flashing kernels besides the official motorola one. I do however know on the MIUI rom there is a quick reboot option which people use which keeps the kernel loaded. You can use that when you need to reboot.
I found the quick reboot function, thx!
I have no problem with sound when recording anymore, don't know why it failed the first time I tried it
This rom is much more stable than dexter's version, really glad I installed it.

[Q] Best Rom for Xt720

What is the best rom for now XT720.
Stable, with few or no bugs?
miui was the most stable for me, but not as stable as stock
I use miui (the original, not final v2) It's alright but I have heard xda special or cm6 is best. I have used stock 2.1, stock 2.2. I like miui the most out of those 3 at least
Can you give me the link? It is supported by the Portuguese?
If you have other favorite rom can post.
I think the most stable rom that I had was Khals steelblue wanhu. MIUI V2 is probably the fastest that I had.
CM6 is really cool but there are def more bugs in it than other roms.
The XDA Special and Hellmongers RC1 are my favorites that I have tried so far.
I have been using RC1 for about a week straight and I do not have any complaints.
I am eagerly waiting to try RC2. Heading to get my sd card reader here in a couple hourse.
I can't complain with MIUI V2 so far, it's going pretty well, I'd say it's more stable than the stock rom I had.
Cm6 is fast and extremely stable. I haven't had to do a battery pull since I first flashed 6.1.2 until now.... I don't think there are huge bugs left already.

For now my opinion is the XDA Hellmonger Special. Just as fast and smooth as CM6 if not faster plus has more features working such as FM Radio. Plus a final is coming soon. Camera might even be working better not sure, but one thing CM6 has on the Special is bluetooth voice dialing.
Oh and almost bugless, no more bootloop or freezes as long as you flash over CBW sbf
CM7 no doubt
CM7 not work on my XT720 because the baseband and Europe.
But I've used in my old one CM7 Xperia X8 and it is great.
Today, Dexter's 2.2 for me is the best rom.
Many Rom do not have the Portuguese, and I'm Brazilian, I need the Portuguese in my phone.
I used the MIUI XTfinal for a long time, nearly 2 months, and was quite happy with it. Now I am using the CM6 Version of Mioze which I find stable with the new baseband and supercharger multitasking option. Stable and smooth - just how it should be!
Edit: As I am using the LG optimus theme, there comes a Portuguese keyboard (dictionary) with it. Maybe that helps you...

Yes, I've tried many many roms before I slipped back to stock StarHubSG 2.1 rom. IMHO, stock roms has less functionality, but are the most stable and power efficient roms. for some visual effects, I replace the stock apps with the whole bunch of Go Dev teams apps. Go Launcher EX, Go Contact EX, Go SMS Pro, Go Dialer, Go Keyboard. everything Go! and too add up some more extra apps, I installed App2Card to make ext2 work. No O/C. Just 720Mhz. It's a life saver.
Now I got an Atrix but still can't get rid of this XT720. Mainly becoz of it's camera. Ya, no one (I mean no phones) can't beat that Xenon flash yet.
Try the cm6, its damn stable. Haven't got to do a battery pull since I first installed it.

The Hellmonger Special is damn stable now and camera working great as well, plus just about everything working. How is the camera and video with CM6 now? I wonder if it is 5megapixel instead of 8? Since it is based from a phone that was 5megapixel? And is it HD recording? I want a ROM with a good camera since that's the biggest reason for purchasing the phone.
Since 3g and mms are fixed now with Mz's baseband updates the only downfall compared to CM6 is can't make bluetooth voice dialed calls yet.
The speed and smoothness of The hellmonger is just as good or better than CM6 as well. CM6 is good to try and get a feel for for now, but the Hellmonger Special is a keeper! Lol
***The M logo freezes are no more since I flashed over the CBW sbf. It was the Singapore SBF that was causing the issue.
Hellmonger's Final coming soon!
...CM6 is built from source for the XT720 using the XT720's libraries. It's not a binary port from A853. 8MP may or may not work, but you're speculating based on false assumptions. In 6.3, the camera and camcorder settings claim 8MP/HD works and they save files but I have not verified the output. That said, CM6 is definately a work-in-progress.
Hellmonger's XDAspecial is a great, very functional and quite optimized ROM that's nearing a final release. It's my second favorite.

Hi spiderx_mm, possible to have that rom which you did?
for all those that said ___'s rom is the most stable. Can you give me a rough ratio as to how many battery pulls you had to do compared to how many your previous roms had?
Or is the whole delightful freezing just a plague to a select few?
Personally I don't care for style or speed, as the most entertainment I get from my xt720 would be reading ebooks. It's the random freezes and constant (somewhat embarassing in public) battery pulls that pisses me off to no end.
I'm using stock 2.1, and wondering if installing a new rom is worth the trouble, or if it even helps with the freezing

So is camera and camcorder working good now in CM6.3? Can you give a brief description/comparison of CM6.3? Why you prefer it over Special? I know it's a tough comparison, or at least not much better or worse between the 2. I tried CM6 briefly but it was when it had the minor camera reboot hiccup. I had some issues but I think it may have been from flashing from XDA Special instead of clean from CBW sbf. One thing I know for sure is better is the Bluetooth works good and fully with CM6.3. That may be a deal breaker for me lol. Also I might have to try CM6 for a while just to narrow down my mms issues. Either way I love both ROM's and don't have a real ***** about anything just minor grumps lol.
***Also I don't think Supercharger worked well with CM6 but can't be sure til I try again. It works beautifully with Special.
No, camera and camcorder still currently suck on CM6--but not because it comes from A853--they suck because I don't understand how to configure the build properly yet.
I was just correcting your assertion that the problem was that CM6 relies on binaries from different hardware. There are very, very few non-XT720-derived files in CM6--see https://github.com/Mioze7Ae/android_vendor_motorola_sholest/blob/froyo/inventory.txt . WanHu, XDAspecial and CM6 are all substantially based on native XT720 ROMs.
I don't really care about which ROM is better than which, but I'll give you my perspective as someone that's worked closely with a few of them:
Unfortunately, Motorola baked a bunch of Koreanisms deep into the XT720 froyo framework. These are very time-consuming to identify and fix because you have to work at the low-level of decompiled dalvik bytecode (smali--essentially assembly language). And just forget about modifying the native parts built from C/C++.
The attraction of the CM6 ROM for me is it comes directly from the same high level languages (C/C++/Java) that is used to develop Android. Source-based ROMs are the easiest to modify. For example, milaq's CM6.3 is CM6final+backported features from CM7.
Dexter's 1.3, CBW froyo, CM7, Ice&Fire, FroyoMod, MIUI are all binary ports of A853 ROMs. I don't get too excited about these ROMs because even if you get the sensors working, they will be just as difficult to modify as Dexter's was. That is, low-level smali edits but additionally starting from the handicap of missing XT720 functionality.
CM7 could be compiled from source using the work that's already been done in CM6.3, but nobody's done that. I'm going to get CM6 into a more finalized state before I do that myself. As far as I can tell the major advances in gingerbread are some new animations and API support for in-app billing.
But anyway, you can imagine my preferences are driven by what I perceive will be easiest to fix in the long term, rather than which has the current best state. I don't think any of the ROMs are flawless, but I know I will get significantly more fixed per unit effort on a source-based ROM. Basically, CM6 is the most tinkerer friendly of our ROMs--download the source and build it yourself--but XDAspecial has the most features and best functionality. I expect CM6 to achieve parity by the end of the year, but it's not there yet.

OK, I've got one that's been bugging me. I have a LOT of apps installed and if I have moved a number of the larger ones to the SD Card (to free up /data), once I get to greater than 1GB in android_secure, my phone fails to boot completely and just locks up. It's not the SD Card (32GB Class 10) that has errors (scanned with both Windows and 4Ext), just seems to be too much for the OS to handle.
I'm still running ShiftHackedA05P 2.8 (CM 2.7.3) from days gone by. Suggestions welcome. Thanks.
Edit: And I use Autostarts (Advanced mode) to turn off receivers for apps that I don't want to load, and LBE to disable permissions.
You might try using a Rom that has ext4 support since it supports larger file sizes.

Thank you for the reply, expert one
The folder has ~87 files of sizes 3MB to 40MB, which causes the lockup after booting at random times (sometimes it makes it further and ultimately boots, after MANY battery pulls). Once the folder is pared down to a lesser total size, the phone boots more rapidly and doesn't lock up; seems to be a linear relationship between how many files and the total time to boot until the CPU usage drops.
It might also be that most apps are moving away from app to sd since it isn't used as much anymore.

New issue, perhaps?, I am noticing that when LTE/CDMA mode my connection is showing as LTE only where it used to use ehrpd for transport and thereby still keeping 3g radio enabled. Normally no big deal but at times I am unable to send/receive texts or make/receive phone calls. Has Verizon stopped using this middle transport for LTE? I am unsure why I am always showing LTE only and if this is causing a problem. Switching to CDMA (auto prl) is the only remedy that I have found. Any thoughts?

I'm stuck now after unconsciously deleted system apps from my newly rooted HP slate plus! The screen turned black and it become dark! You should probably find an HP slate forum to post that issue in.

disconnecktie.
I just saw where Droid Incredible 2 has a fully functioning CM 10.1 rom. Just wondering if that could be possible for us since DINC 2 has same processor, same resolution, same manufacturer, same everything except 4G. I'd love to have CM10.1 if it meant sacrificing 4G (or even all data).
I'm new to all this, but if you think a port is possible or maybe some other way to get this on our device I will give it 100% effort.
If it can't be done then crush my dreams now and I will somehow learn to live without my TB.
Thanks.
Porting the dinc2 ROM breaks data for the bolt since the bolt has an svdo radio setup. I have ported from it before and I either had calling with no data or just data. I'm not saying it couldn't be done but it is out of my area of expertise. Go to infectedrom. com and there is a cm10.2 build made by Santod that has working WiFi. Since data doesn't seem to be an issue for you.

Thanks.
I'm awefully attached to my TB and I still think it is a great device.
I really enjoy all of santod's roms, but the PacMan one just doesn't perform well on my phone.
Thank again.

Yeah none of the newer stuff will perform well honestly. It is just to much for the old bolt to handle.

[all in one] thunderbolt tool
New to xda so can't post in the original thread, but I need info on the thunderbolt tool. I have used it before with great results, now trying to root my other TB and old vesion won't update and new download won't unzip (reads no files when extracting).
if anyone has any ideas i could use the help. I want to upgrade my other TB to the ICS rom that santod posted but i am dependent on its wifi tether and want to have a backup device if any problems a cure (doubtful, as the instructions seem strait forward).
Thanks
E.R.Rider .

It could be closed for any number of reasons. Cjen isn't a developer by any stretch of imagination. He's the same guy that kanged CM, and liquidsmooth code in the past in roms he called "liquidsmooth remastered", etc. He basically kangs roms, adds and removes apps, then rereleases them himself as though he built them, all without providing the source that would show no commits made by him. The irony is, liquidsmooth 3.2, CM7.2, And thundershed actually worked perfectly for the most part, his so called rom doesn't... If you're interested in gingerbread AOSP roms for the bolt, i'd stick with thundershed and liquidsmooth. At least workshed's and team liquid are real developers and their roms worked...

You cant beat usabilety and speed of CM7 based roms I currently use Oxygen ROM 2.3.2 wihich is very light and stable but also would reccomend gingerdx because it has a few added features and looks like ICS or JB if you download and add acheps JB theme to it
Minimal and most stable - 2.3.7 GB is what you are looking for.

On GB they are oxigen rom, and gingerDX
on ICS i use placebo rom. for me its the most stable.
but since you want a fast rom stay with GB
Gingersnap...best till date...great camera quality
Do not underestimate Mukulsoni's Kitkat ROM for our old faithful friend. Stable and smooth. Also the latest droid:good:

I disagree.
WLAN is crap in his rom. there are several ppl who have the issue but he doesnt give a **** and focuses on completly wrong things. like OTA update....who the f*ck needs this? if i have to flash it with recovery first time, then i can do it again with a new version. nobody needs this ota **** wasting space on the phone.
And when he says "the rom is smooth and fast". It feels like my grand ma with the rollator can beat this "fast" rom!
i try the oxygen roms next hopfully there no such issues.
EDIT: AND he doesnt give the option for ppl like me who doesnt want use Link to SD or AD2Sdx to disable it.
Let's Agree to disagree my Friend!

The CM11 WIFI problem on LG Optimus One has solution. first i have t say "Mukulsoni" IS DOING GREAT!! bringing the KitKat to P500 is really something, man!!! the ROM is not as much fast as CM7 is, BUT it's still smooth and KitKat BEAT'S anyway!
we need to accept that P500 does not meet the minimum system requirements for KitKat (internal memory, CPU speed and so..) and if we consider this, show's how much fast is his ROM!!
The CM11 WIFI problem on LG Optimus One is Real :crying: !! I faced it.. but also solved the problem!!
If you set "United States" in [Settings >WIFI >Advance >WIFI Region Code ] it will fix your problem! :cyclops:
the bug is where that you cannot keep this setting!! every time you reboot the device, you need to do it again! but, not a big deal to me anyway.
also there's this Thread which help you get rid of WIFI reconfiguring each time after reboot, by using this WiFix App .
:good: I wish you the best, my bro. :good:
When will you people learn? Bragging about Kitkat "oh look at me I got the newest Android - its not stable, still in development lots of buggs, lagg as hell, little storage and little free RAM, but hey at least I got the newest..".
Besides this cons as long as the dev is unofficial it will never be good as CM9.
Do as you wish, I've said this a couple of times, expecially when JB 4.3 dev came up, people said the same stuff. I don't care about you using KITKAT, but don't make a good commercial about a bad product to non-dev users.

There is no lag. The only lag with kitkat launcher but not a deal, can be beaten with Holo or Nova launchers.
There is no RAM shortage. Learn about Link2sd. I have some 90MBs free now.
You cannot blame without evidence.
We are not fan of kitkat just because it is new. Mukulsoni done well. 3 years old phone now works way better than 2.3.x
I am not saying it is the best ROM, but not deserving such criticism.
Have fun!
ROMs
Tried many ROMs, but definitely can say that CyanogenMod 7 (by FitAmp) is the best. OxygenROM seemed not so good for me. I don't really know why. It seemed that the battery was going down too fast when I used it, maybe It's just me. In CyanogenMod 9 (hephappy 9.2.3) I had issue with SD-Card that would keep unmounting. CyanogenMod 10 was quite good. Phone slept well, but It was a bit laggy for me. I haven't tried CyanogenMod 11 because of many unneeded (for me) "features".
TL;DR
CM7 is the smoothest in performance and best in battery for me.
CM10 is coolest in UI , battery last long if you don't use the phone that much, but sometimes laggy.
CM9 have this weird sd-card issue FOR ME (only few O1 phones have this OR It's just bad sd-card ).

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHHA.
No lag ey? C'mon I know you're lying.
RAM and Storage are two different things, learn to defer between.
Link2SD Am using it since like forever, I was going to mention a fact that besides the user-installed apps are on SD they still use internal data but I'll double check this.
Evidence? Check the whole thread. I stopped experimenting since JB as I saw in order to run newer android, system will take more and more from our phone's resources. And still checking dev by-the-way.
IT WORKS BETTER THEN 2.3.X? HAHAHAHHAHAHAHHA
You just made my day xD
PS: If GB supported Greenify and other alike apps I would never leave GB. Am only on ICS because of Android compatibility.

Agreed.
Btw since I don't have this SD-card issue it's only your phone.
Play around a little and perhaps it can be fixed. (do know how to clean-install a new rom?, did you tried formating sdcard in any way and did you tried formating it trough different recoveries?(for example, on 4.2.2 JB I found a fix for non-working sdcard on partitioned sdcard and partitioning it trough diff recovery fixed that issue) etc etc.)
Thread Closed, there shouldn't be any discussion about Best. Fastest ROM/Kernel
