The Hidden Note 8 - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) Accessories

While most will get a folio cover, I intend to conceal mine. This is more so while commuting, carrying the Note 8 in your hand. I bought a rubberized covered planner and painstakingly cut the inside i the exact profile of the Note 8. You can achieve this by making a template of the outline, and then pencil and cut every 5 to 6 pages at a time. Make sure you reference the template with the page edges for accuracy. I provided 1mm allowances fom the edges and eventual back cover when it's available in the market here.
I dislike carrying a bag all the time, and so I would just put on a book strap and hook it on my belt area. No one suspects that it's stored in the planner. I didn't bother taking off the price sticker just to give it more deception.

you stick a smart cover on that thing and easy access to the SPen, and you'd be in business.
id like something like this for the same reason, conceal it a bit as i walk out on the streets back and forth between my meetings

I thought it was for sale XD. Looks awesome

I take it out when I use it, but I suspect bought the extra S Pen with the eraser end for the optional rubberized tip for a bit of friction. I noticed that the white default S Pen gets dirty easily.
I love using the other extra one for better drawing control. I keep it in my thin book cover for my Note II. I'm still waiting to get a silicone back cover for the Note 8 fire a better grip and some protection.

You need to make and there is no point just buying it for some security.
This was what I did for the Note II when I need to hide it:

I'm thinking like a side holster-like type to be carrying it around. It needs to hold the size of my A4 modified planner. Darn, I'll never find what I have in mind exact to the dimensions I need. So, it looks like I need to design one and have it custom made.
As for the S Pen, it's a Samsung branded S Pen. It's rare but I came across one in an electronics shop for $24. Bought it right away. It was the only time I've seen one in any shops.

Awesome awesome case, love it!
To find another S-pen just google around for the "8pi" variation for note 10.1, it works a treat and shouldnt be too hard to find.
You might even be able to buy direct from Samsung.

I made a couple of cases something like this for my and my girlfriend's Nook Colors a couple of years back.
I used (very hard to find at the time) hardback artists' sketchbooks in 6 x 9 and 3/8" square dowels to make an internal frame that the device rested in.
I found some sliding door hooks and stopcocks and did a fairly elaborate catchment - lower corner with the sliding door hook, upper corner with the stopcock modified so it was a rotary latch - most of the time the device stays in, but it can be freed.
Once I was done - long process! - I found that Pad and Quill makes a pretty nice case along the same lines.
Right now it looks as if most of their cases are designed for ipads and Kindles, but if the Note 8 is close enough to either (it's very close to the same linear dimensions as the Nook Color, btw) these are nice looking.

They don't have the latching or catching mechanism, but they're quite nice. There's an outfit in SF that does similar work.

Thanks for the link! The Nook case design just sparked an idea for creating the thinnest paper walls at 3 to 5mm like a box for the Note 8. Making it detachable from the leather bound with a pin how for the camera at the back will eliminate my taking it out "naked". The paper edge is what gives the illusion to look like an ordinary notebook from the outside. This is even more so with the Note 8 being only 8mm thick.
Ooh, I'll need to shop around fire some good elements. 2 weeks or so for this project.

The following is my latest conversion of an ordinary spiral-bounded notebook into a carrying case fire the Note 8. I first made a tracing template of the outline I needed to cut. I then needed to cut in precision at 6 pages at a time to go match a stack of 8mm pages of the Note 8. Glue was then used on the interior cut walls as reinforcements.
I then integrated the notebook with the Starbucks 2013 planner cover.
This lessens attention to would be thieves when you carry the Note 8.

Here are more clear pictures of the modified $1 spiral bounded notebook. The exposed lines at the paper side edge gives it a bit more deception.
The white blends in with paper nicely. I plan to down entirely new version again.

Now all you need to do is work a magnet in to the cover and you can also have wake and sleep function!
Thanks for sharing. I'm inspired. I dont live in a rough area (although sometimes you do get a bit of trouble travelling in and around London), but i do like the idea of this type of case to deture would be oportunists. Plus its completely customisable to your prefference. Using it with the 8pi pen, to a casual onlooker it will look like im just making notes.

Oh, thanks. I happen to have a magnetic Starbucks bookmaker that came with the original planner cover. Will try and post if it reaches the trigger area fit the on/off screen function.
I just read how a small magnet can do this, only this morning.

A post on one of the case reviews in this forum shows the location of the sensor that triggers the screen on/off function but im sure a quick test of running that bookmaker magnet will show you where you need to position it (providing it is strong enough to trigger the effect). They uses a really cheap magnet they bought from a store and installed it into there case. If your starbucks magnet doesnt work I'm sure you can find one that does pretty easily.
What amuses me is that one of my intended purposes of my Note 8.0 was to replace an A5 note book I carry around with me everywhere. Now I'm considering incorporating it into the note book it was intended to replace.
It looks a very snug fit in your photos. Do you have any issue with it falling out when holding it upright or do you only use this as a method for transport and protection. I can imagine that the extra paper "bezel" may enhance the sketching experience.
I think ill find a decent half shell case, a mini guard screen protector, a A5 notepad (with elastic strap) and the 8pi spen and have all the accessories I need.
This is replacing a notepad, sketchbook and 10 inch tablet. I'll have so much room in my bag!
If only I had a way of disguising my Sony NEX camera as well!

Well, the magnetic bookmarker is too weak to trigger the the screen sleep function. I have instead placed a magnet on the leather-like cover with Blutack. It works waking up the screen when I open the cover.
I made this based on hiding my Note II with a smaller notebook. I even place a niche for the S Pen. This is bigger, and the challenge is to deter interest away from just one look. The real paper bezel will give the illusion of it just looking like a notebook. Never glue the exterior sides and just let the natural wither of paper to add to the illusion. It takes long and you need to be precise in the cuttings. I glued it with a small brush section by section at a time, letting the each session dry to the next.
I am part of the Urban Sketchers movement and yes, this aids my secret on-location sketching of strangers. Although I still love to do watercolors and do carry my portable set. Since the Note 8 rather bigger, I carry it exposed but secured with my waist bag like so:
I pretty sure this would get you less in hard situations than carrying a bigger bag. The exposure of the "planner" will most probably make anyone overlook that there is a Note 8 tablet inside.
I'm waiting a decent back hard shell to hit the market to act as a frame for my next version using the same notebook. You can integrate an elastic band like what you find in Moleskine notebooks.
I use this as my daily folio in class and I take out the note at home to place it on a stand to recharge at night.

Seidio Active X Case Black Review UPDATED - 50+ pics

Will be doing a thorough review on the Seidio Active X Case, including some tests for durability. Pictures will be included.
Providing the Basics today along with a few photos, will run the case through a series of test for durability and use this weekend. More pictures to come!
My apologies if a couple pics don't look so great Camera was giving me issues.
Intro:
Well Just received the Seidio Active X case today and I have to say I was surprised. You are provided with three pieces. Outer Screen protector, a rubber back skin, and then a Plastic Skeleton to go over the rubber back piece. Installation was breeze and this case is easier to remove due to the design of the Plastic Skeleton. Outer Screen protector is pretty simple to remove but having finger nails will benefit greatly! Another thing to note: Since the Skeleton is a separate piece, changing colors will be simple ( if you wanted to could even paint it! ). Sliding Mechanism was not affected at all.

Design:
Outer Screen protector
Outer Screen Protection Piece does have a taller lip and it is a little thicker but feels strong. With the taller lip I didn't find any affect or issues with comfort on the use of the screen or buttons. The finish is smooth with a rubbery feel, and yes you may find that one or two little bumps within the finish - (If you really want to remove the bumps in the finish then use 1500 or 2000 wet sand paper and very Lightly go over the bumps. Make sure to wet the paper - this will allow you to keep the finish). The tabs are located on both the top and bottom of the piece and sectioned in the middle ( view pictures above ). -- This is nice since the most common issue with cases is scratching or restriction due to the tabs being placed on each side.
Rubber Skin:
IMO - I love this! Provides protection for the phone without the possibility of the case scratching the phone itself. Both the Power and Volume buttons are covered but fit the form of the phone and require the same amount of pressure to be pushed. As for the cut outs - Match perfect- Mic, USB, Headphone, Camera, and LED, and if by chance yours does not you can also trim whatever excess you need to since its rubber.
Back Skeleton:
The back Skeleton has a very smooth finish with no bump in sight. The skeleton itself is very sturdy along with the clips located on each corner. Now the design was to set for most common point of Impact. On any phone there are 6 points - Top Left and Right Corner - Bottom Left and Right Corner - Left Side - Right Side. The Skeleton was designed around these 6 points of impact along with using the rubber skin interior as a shock absorber. The skeleton Case Wraps around on each point which in truth allows for a sturdier construction due to each point of impact being supported both by form and curvature.
I will provide pics of the phone within the case once the Camera is charged.

If you can assure me that this product 1. Does not look as rough around the edges as in the pictures on the website 2. Allows me full functionality of the keyboard (slides open *duh*, doesn't hinder ability to use top row number buttons) 3. Is durable and well made enough to justify spending $29.95 on a case, then I will glady purchase it. Question: Is there any way you could get pictures different angles of the case for example the top and bottom with keyboard open/closed, I am seriously interested as long as I can have some good information to go off of.

Sadly ALL of the Active cases are like that.
On the Nexus and Evo active cases, the rubber has lots of extra bits, and the ports aren't perfectly cut.
On the Evo, the plastic shell doesn't fit perfectly around the rubber skin, and has a bit of a gap.
You can take a exacto blade and remove the uneven edges if you want.

That's disappointing to hear, how could they expect me to pay that amount for such bad quality? When we get some detailed pictures I will have a better idea of the quality, but until then all indicators point to a poor quality product.

Seidio is currently the best quality case out there for the epic but it ISN'T any OtterBox or even CaseMate.
The plastic exoshell on my friends Evo has been shedding since she purchased it. Little bits of plastic come off the shell just from having it in her pocket.
Seidio is not worth the price of the product, quality wise. But when there is literally nothing else on the market, what else can ya do?

Not hard at all, just grab a corner and pull away slightly and should come right off.
Still not sure I can justify paying $30 for a case vs. $2 I paid for my ebay one. I'm sure quality is very different, but I feel like the level of protection I get from my ebay one (which I guess we are referring to as the "bar" kind from that other review) is adequate enough. It feels good in the hands too. I'll wait to see pics of this when you have everything fully assembled. I'm wondering how thick it gets with 3 pieces.
Updated More pics
How much more thickness does it add. Is it still pocketable? obviously it'll be thicker but pictures and actual hands on is always a differant story. Thanks!

Just a tad thicker really, add maybe 1mm if that IMO. Fits in the pocket no issue at all, and the case finger groves are perfect, ambidextrous. Also the lip around the Face Protection of the case has more depth.

[VIDEO] Nexus 4 Orb Magnet Mod; can be used in the car too! I am a genius.

OK, so I have posted in a couple of forums that I have been working on this project for a while. That doesn't mean that the mod has taken me this long, it's just that I haven't had the time to complete it.
The mod is this: I took the four discs from the Palm Pre back cover and crazy glued them to a screen protector on the back of my Nexus. I made sure that the alignment was perfect by first placing the discs on the Palm Pre Touchstone, and then putting masking tape around all four discs in a square formation and then peeled off the masking tape so that it was one big piece that essentially had a square opening in the middle. I then placed the tape on the back of the phone and lined it up as perfect as possible and then crazy glued the discs in the open part of the tape at the four corners. Now, they lined up perfectly with the Touchstone. (I was originally going to just leave the Touchstone in my car from back from the Palm Pre days and by having the discs on the phone, the phone would magnetically hold right to the Touchstone and be in perfect site for my while driving).
Next, I modified my Orb so that it has a magnetic hold to the phones discs. I used rare earth magnets that I bought from Radio Shack for $5. I made four notches in the Orb and then crazy glued the magnets in place. Now, there is no slippage at all and the phone can be used in your car as long as you can find a place to put it. You do not have to worry about it falling from a bumpy ride as the magnetic hold is strong enough. It doesn't need to be put in the car either as now all I do is simply put the phone down on the Orb and the magnets align it immediately so I don't have to worry about getting the sweet spot.
I am so happy with my design, but at the same time, I am so baffled that LG did not incorporate something like this into their design. It doesn't matter to me now that I have my own mod, but I know that there are people out there who don't have time or possibly the hands on know how on doing this mod. I also know how frustrated a lot of people are with the Orb. If you don't or can't do this mod, I have an easy solution to keep the phone from slipping with regular use. Just buy a screen protector for the back of your Nexus and the phone doesn't slide anymore. It will certainly not hold it in place like the magnets, but at least you don't have to worry about the phone sliding off in the middle of the night.
I have attached a link to youtube of the video showing this mod:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUMnKEqwzrQ&feature=youtu.be
Hope this helps and inspires others to do this or come up with another solution to the horribly designed Orb.

That's a perfect idea but I just can't bear putting magnets on my n4 even if its on a screen protector. Dude u hacked your orb up too but good work I wish lg had thought about this beforehand. Luckily I've had my orb for over a month now and mine hasn't slide once.

I think the whole 'magnet to align a device with a charger' thing is patented. Hence LG's seemingly odd choice.
Yes I hacked my Orb!! Believe me, I am definitely mad about the way it looks. I never have done poor work like that but i figured it was a test and if I screwed up, I will just buy a new one. But I will make it look better. The point of this is so you don't hack yours! A razor blade should do the trick but make sure it is extremely sharp. You will feel when you get to the plastic on the Orb after you cut through the rubber.
Also what's on the back of the Nexus is simply metal discs, not magnets. The magnets are on the Orb

I don't believe that the metal discs will interfere with NFC, but I still have to check. As fas as opening the phone and applying the discs, I wouldn't get as strong of a hold plus the glass on the back may break. I didn't want to risk it. As far as the phone goes, the look of the discs to me looks good. They are almost 100% symmetrical and by peeling off the screen protector, they will come off with it if I ever need to do that.
I don't have a case, just a sleeve that I slide the phone in and out of. Not once have the discs come off or prevented a smooth sliding in and out of the sleeve.
Thanks for the tips anyway.

Dude that is hilarious! I guess his heart electricity was modified to transmit voltage through induction from his wrist. Awesome video man!

My only concern with this is I wonder if the screen protector will come off the back with those magnets. Other than that, that's a great mod! I'd suggest maybe covering up some of the open cut areas with some electrical tape or a rubber ring of some sort.
So far, since the screen protector has a really strong adhesive, I haven't had to worry about that. Plus instead of just pulling the phone off, I twist it off to prevent exactly what you said possibly occurring. It is so worth it and I hope someone else does this. When I get get it positioned in the car, I will post up some pictures. I just can't wait to not have to plug in a cable while driving plus have the phone right in my eyesight without any bulky windshield adapter.

Well done! I am always fascinated by the DIYs here in this forum.
On the Orb, maybe you can apply a layer of vinyl on the contacting surface? Now that you have the magnet, you dont need the sticky ring.
On the phone, do you actually need the magnets? I try some magnets on the back of N4, and it just stick like that. Otherwise, wonder if you can 'paint' the magnet into black color...

Exactly. I am going to put something on the surface of the orb since the ring and outer area that is hacked look like that. I was thinking some thin felt, but vinyl sounds good too.
As far as the metal discs, I did try painting them once before with a flat black paint, but the paint comes off after the wear and tear on them. For instance, the way that I get the phone off of the orb is by twisting it first then by pulling it off. If I just pull the phone off, I'm afraid that eventually the screen protector is going to start peeling off too. So by turning the phone and then pulling, the paint starts to chip and come off. I need something stronger for the discs to paint them so they don't stand out. I also could just take the palm Pre black adhesive sticker and cover them like it's done with the pre...

[REVIEW][+PICS!] Seidio OBEX Case/Holster Combo

Seidio OBEX Case and Holster for Galaxy S4
Seidio has proven to me that they are a force to be reckoned with when it comes to quality cell phone cases. I’ve owned a Seidio case for ALL of my Android devices (HTC Hero, HTC Evo, Samsung Epic, Samsung Droid Charge, Droid Razr, Nexus 7 (2012), Nexus 4 and now the Samsung Galaxy S4). All of these cases have been excellent and others have hands-down blown me away (such as their Active Case for the Nexus 7 - ) and now the OBEX Case for the S4!
To be clear, I’ve owned numerous other cases and products also along the years ranging from inexpensive TPU cases to other “industry leading” fan-favorites. Seidio has met and exceeded my needs and wants each and every case I’ve owned and has proven time and time again why they are good at what they do.
This case is EASILY an A+ Quality device that easily shows what sets Seidio apart from their competitors and shows what happens when ANY company puts their minds towards creating a great product!
Technical Specs
For those who like specs, they can all be found at Seidio’s website (which basically says the following):
This product is not compatible with the Samsung Wireless (Inductive) Charging Cover or the Samsung GALAXY S4 ACTIVE.
Protecting your Samsung GALAXY S4 is not always easy, but Seidio’s OBEX® utilizes advanced technology that not only safeguards your device against drops, but also keeps external elements from damaging your device. This daily use case will protect you from water and accidental coffee spills, inclement weather including rain and snow, and from the dirt and grit of everyday activities.
We have simplified the design to ensure that your GALAXY S4 is protected at the highest level possible in the form of a slim and sleek case that is easy to install and devoid of any loose parts or covers. Our unique tunneling design enables true passage of sound, while the built-in screen protector promotes touch sensitivity and clarity. OBEX® will give you the ultimate protection – anytime, anywhere.
Waterproof
- Case meets the IP68 rating, signifying that it is both dust-tight and protected against complete, continuous submersion
- Critical points of entry are blocked by a two-stage protection system
- Anti-reflection glass protects the camera lens without interfering with photo quality
- Water proof membranes shield the microphones and speakers while maintaining with sound quality
Drop Protection
- Exceeds the MIL-STD-810F standard and can survive drops from up to 6 feet
- Internal structure is designed to protect your Samsung GALAXY S4 in the event that it is dropped or compressed
- Combination of Polycarbonate (PC) and Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) materials provides protection from impact
- Raised edges on the case and the 4H hardness rated screen protector create a barrier from external elements
Everyday Protection
- Designed so your Samsung GALAXY S4 remains fully functional for daily use
- Easy installation of only two parts creates a unibody design and eliminates the worry of loose pieces after case assembly
- Soft rubber stoppers keep dust and liquids out of headphone and USB ports while still allowing easy access in dry conditions
- Case will not interfere with radio signals, Bluetooth, IR Blaster, or NFC (Near Field Communication)

Additionally, Seidio says that the OBEX case “exceeds the stringent requirements for both IP68 and MIL-STD-810F certifications.”
More information at http://www.seidio.com/document/IP68.pdf and http://www.seidio.com/document/MIL-STD-810F.pdf.
In other words, regarding IP68 certification, the OBEX case is the highest level of contact protection (rated 6 - Dust Tight) and the highest level of protection against liquid and moisture (rated 8 - Completed and continuous submersion in water for up to two meters for 30 minutes). As far as MIL-STD-810F certifications… it’s a 529 page document. I can’t even pretend that I’ve read it all or understand it. Needless to say, from what I have read, it appears to be pretty intense testing!

Honestly, no one cares what the packaging looks like as long as it’s not a ziplock bag (it’s not by the way). Packing was professional and well done. Included in the packaging I received a waterproof 3.5mm Male to 3.5mm Female Audio Adapter (which I have not tested), the OBEX case for the Samsung Galaxy S4 and a belt holster (optional).
I had no idea what to expect when I received the case. Would it be huge and bulky or reasonably sized? Would I hate it and send it back immediately or would I give it a fair shake-down? Initial impressions really didn’t sway my mind one way or another. It all had to come down to testing. Regardless though, this surely HAS to be better than running in the rain with my phone in a ziplock bag, right?
OBEX Case Impressions
The $1,000,000 question: Is it REALLY waterproof to the specs that they listed and will it keep my device dry? YES IT WILL!!!
Initial waterproof test:
Dunk Test!
But… before we get that far, let’s cover some details.
For some unknown reason, Seidio decided to put the instruction manual for the device INSIDE of the case. So the only way to know how to open the case is to risk breaking your expensive new waterproof case in hopes of not damaging it (luckily I didn’t damage it), try to find directions online or ask Seidio for help. I did all three.
STOP!!! Before installing - Check these two links!!!
Here is some useful information I found on this:
THIS VIDEO and the installation manual found HERE.
Those who are familiar with Seidio’s signature soft-touch texture on the case will NOT find it here. This case does not have the soft-touch that we know and love and is more of a generic plastic feel. The colored sides are a rubbery-plastic material that offers a grippy texture.
All ports are clearly accessible (once ports are opened), the power and volume buttons are crisp and responsive. All phone calls reported that voice was clear and understandable and sounded the same regardless of if the case was installed or not. Additionally, playing music through the phone while the case is installed sounds perfectly ok and does not appear to add any muffling regardless of if the phone is placed screen up or screen down!
The camera and flash feature anti-reflective glass coverings that do not interfere with camera or flash functionality!
The headphone jack is accessible by a rubber plug that plugs into the top of the phone and also is attached to the case. As mentioned, the device comes with a waterproof jack but for the number of times I’ve caught my headphone cable on something and yanked it out of the phone, I’m not sure if I would even consider using this in a water-prone situation.
The top and bottom clips were somewhat of a pain to pry open but having done them a few times now, they DO get easier to do and still hold firm. Long term use will prove more valuable for how well these hold up.
The screen is dimmer and less clear than with a glass screen protector or with a naked screen. Such is to be expected with a case/screen protector like this. As you know, you don’t purchase a case like this just so you can have the clearest screen possible. You purchase this case to keep your device as safe as possible in as many preventable situations (such as snorkeling) and unpreventable situations (such as sudden dust or rain storms) as possible.
Note: While the case DOES fit with a glass screen protector installed on the phone, the touch response is garbage. I would advise using the case with ONLY the screen protector built into the case. Additionally, for those that have the aluminum home buttons installed, they will need removed also to ensure proper “clicking” of the home button. I cannot comment on film screen protectors.
OBEX Holster Impressions
The holster for the OBEX case is pretty straightforward and similar to the holster for other devices. This is, without a doubt, a MUST HAVE for anyone looking for a belt holster. There are a few improvements and differences with this holster that I haven’t seen (or have been redesigned) in previous models.
The Holster can hold the OBEX case in a “screen in” or a “screen out” position. Both positions leave the headphone jack accessible. NEITHER position allows the charging port to be accessed (though I’m hoping that Seidio considers a redesign for this as I feel it is clearly an oversight).
The first and most notable difference is on the center of the holster where there is a sliding switch that slides to a locked/unlocked position. This is actually an excellent idea as it allows the holster to become a modular unit! This lock secures the physical belt clip to the holster unit. This allows not only broken clips to be replaced but also allows for expansion to products such as car mounts and other accessories. Judging by the instruction manual linked above, there appears to be products in the works for this. My ONLY suggestion/complaint on this is that a car mount is significantly more useful if you can charge the device while you are using it (such as GPS on long trips); not being able to charge the device while it’s hooked to the holster is something I feel needs to be addressed.
The second difference is the return of a locking, spring loaded latch to secure the OBEX case in the holster! Oh how I’ve missed this feature on my past few devices. For those who are familiar with the locking latch, this is a new and improved version that is much easier to work and is more secure. For those who are not familiar with the locking latch, this version has a textured plate that slides up to the top of the device to hold the latch in the locked position and slides down to toward the bottom of the device to allow the latch to spring open/closed when inserting or removing the device from the holster.
Other than the singular flaw with being able to charge the device while in the holster, it’s a PERFECT holster in my opinion!
Cost
There is no beating around the bush with this one. This is one EXPENSIVE case! But, those of us who aren’t on a carrier that offers the S4 Active and would like some kind of additional dust/water/drop protection now have a great option to chose from! It is, undoubtedly, well worth the money.
Seidio sells the OBEX case on their website for $79.95 in black (with red or grey stripe) or white (pink or grey stripe) at the date of this review.

The OBEX case and Holster combo is an additional $10 dollars with the same options for the case.

Nice review.
I would add the case works fine with a "film" screen protector. Touch response is still great. However, I would spend plenty of time getting it spotless (fingerprint and smudge free) before putting it in the case because it will show if you do not.
Good review. But I wouldn't say a glass protector fits all that well. It does but the case is hard to close, the seems at the ends don't sit flush and feels as if it may pop open from the pressure. I ripped my iloome glass off, watching it crack as I did. I wish they made this case with a glass protector.

Great review as usual by Kelmar! You beat me to it
Since I don't want to duplicate the main info already posted in the original review, let me add some of my own comments and a lots of more pictures
First of all, this is probably one of the most anticipated S4 cases. Period! I remember drooling over OBEX S3 case in hopes they will release it for Note 2, but it never happened due to s-pen compatibility issues. Now, being able to test this case with S4 makes me very sad because I no longer have my Verizon S4 review phone and have to use a display model of S4. Let me just tell you - this is the first case that actually makes me want to buy the phone just so I can use it with OBEX. A lot of you who are familiar with my work in both XDA and AF know that I have reviewed a ton of cases, and I can tell you this one is a pure quality crafted to withstand anything from water to impact or dust or snow. It doesn't just meets but actually exceeds both IPX68 rating and MIL-STD-810F test, all independently tested by NAC. This is not just a vendor claim, they can actually confirm that with independent test results.
I wasn't able to test it with a working phone, but I can tell you I was very impressed with a built-in 4H rated screen protector and the clarity of the image. Don't want to mention names *cough* otterbox *cough*, but other companies should take notes how it supposed to be done. I also done some research looking through a number of other review videos talking about how impressive S4 speaker sounds under the water while submerged. You can clearly see a lot of work went into design of that protective sound membrane.
For my water test, I used pool test strips since those will change color once in contact with moisture. In my last picture I actually showed how those colors look if moisture gets inside on that test strip. The case strayed dry without any problem.
Furthermore, I also would like to mention how lightweight the case is. Weighting only 2 ounces (56 grams) its featherlight and with overall dimension of 6" x 3 1/3 " x 1/2 " (150mm x 80 mm x 13 mm) it hardly adds any bulk, For something that offers such an amazing protection, hardly adding any bulk or increasing the weight is very impressive.
Also, the holster is very similar in design to CONVERT holster, and with OBEX S4 case you can actually place the phone facing out thus tilt it on a surface to use like a kickstand. That comes very useful.
The only comment I have is because you can't use wireless charging, you will have to open and close micro-usb port quite often which can add to some wear/tear but with everything covered under warranty - you should have piece of mind. Another comment is that back of the case is a bit on a slippery side, although when you place it on a flat surface you have 2 rubber bumps at each end that create friction with a surface to prevent it from sliding. The rubber material on the side of the case will give you an additional grip, although I would prefer to have back of the case less slippery. But then you can also argue that case is drop and water resistant, so what the heck!
Here are the pictures:
And a "water test"

So mine is waiting for me at work so won't have until tomorrow, but my questions is are you sure it won't work with wireless charging, since I just have the coils behind my back plate almost every case fits, just wondering, guess i will find out tomorrow. M main concern is it will put pressure on it and create a crack, I'll let you know what happens.

Well there is another thread on this forum about the case with pics. The case was released last week. I have had mine since last week. All the pre orders are getting them this week.
Great reviews guys. Are you getting any oil slicks on your screens like the Lifeproof cases are known for? I am tempted to pull the trigger on one of these cases but if it oils slicks like a lifeproof, I will pass. Thanks.

I'll give a whole days worth of use and snap some pics for you. I have kids too and their hands are worse than mine lol and they handle the phone at times.
Ease of removal?
I currently run with the Otterbox reflex which offers pretty poor protection (LCD somehow cracked in my pocket WITH reflex case on), but I use the case because I have to switch out batteries frequently. How much of a pain is it to do with this case, and like the Defender case does repeated removal cause the case to become loose (due to the rubber stretching). Thank you.

S5 styluses: Do you use it and what do you use?

Does anyone else here use the "Hidden" feature of the s5, where it can use various items as a stylus? If so what do you use? For example I have been using a #2 graphite pencil as a precise stylus with the snote app and it's pretty cool. I'm curious to find out if other XDA users use this feature because I just ditched my n3 after seeing and using it. Also as a side note I use the iloome flex and plastic body pens don't work. Metal body ones may scratch your screen protector because it might be a rough metal ball. I used a pencil after testing and they do not scratch the screen (it's graphite hardness of 1 ) so I scratched my screen protector avoid scratching yours if you are going to test. Mechanical pencils (metal body) of .9 thickness work but don't let the metal lead holder scratch your screen.
sweet drawings dude
I just got the Adonit Mini Jot in the mail a few days ago, I love it. Small, compact, only downside is the tip is so accurate it can snap off and be replaced and since its glass (see through) theyre hard to find. They do sell replacements though.

Have you tried a standard pencil with the s note app? I found that with the snote note app you can use any pencil or mostly metal object when it's in app. But if you turn on extra sensitivity you can use the metal objects / pencils anywhere in the ui. I find it intriguing that Samsung doesn't talk about this feature but it's amazing. In short if you want to use a pencil stylus anywhere in the phone turn on extra Sensitivity, but if you only want it for writing the s note app is free.

I used their stylus almost 2 years ago and a quick peek at their website recently shows they released a few new ones. Let me know what you think of the mini jot.
I completely agree. It may be my favorite S5 feature. I use a mini golf pencil and it works wonderfully. It is an amazing combination with the DraStic DS emulator.
I read about this when I first got the phone but wasn't sure about the pencil so I didn't even really try it.
Well, I just did...and holy crap. That works REALLY well. It struggles with my E's, T's and I's when writing but drawing is phenomenal.
Now I have a use for that mechanical pencil that's been sitting in my pen cup on my desk for years lol
Thanks OP

Glad you liked it
Just be a little wary of the lead holder tips. For example the zebra mechanical pencils as they can scratch the screen or screen protector. I have yet to find my co workers 1.1 mm thickness full metal mechanical pencil to use as a stylus.
Been messing around with a good, small solution and this is what I came up with. Bobby Pin + Butchered DS Stylus:
Plan to work on it a bit more to make a more elegant solution. Just make sure the blob at the bottom of the bobby pin fully covers the metal.
I use my Samsung C-Pen ... I have had it for years.

Do you still have a spare spen to test? I ask because I have a Ativ tab 7 with a spen and I was wondering if the nib was big enough to be recognized. I don't mean have a Wacom digitizer either, I just see others here are writing with pencils, so I was hoping it would be sensitive enough to recognize the nib of the spen too.

Case Recommendations

I have ordered three different cases for my X2. One is the frosted white back clear case which fits perfectly but adds some decent amount of bulk. The other is a completely clear IMAK case (it has small little dots on the back) which I really like but it fits the phone so loosely that it isn't even usable. The other case I purchased is the hard matte snap on case by aixuan which I like but there is no protection on the top and bottom. If anyone knows of any cases that fit well and aren't too bulky please post them here.
These are the ones I ordered.

Buttons were reversed for the X1 had to cut the center stripe out to fit perfect. Becareful on the cut and on your fingers.

Thats about the best I could find. I already had a folio case and a smart case with a window. Just need a lock code, haha.

That last one looks interesting. Its annoying to always forget a big smartphone like that in the Summer when you do not have a jacket to carry it in

I like the first one but I wish it didn't have the dragon on the back. The second one I have and it's made for the X2 but the top and bottom are open which offers no protection. The aluminum cases cut the signal a little bit which I don't like. I am not in the market for a holster although that one is nice.
The Aixuan case they send me was probably the wrong one. And your right, no protection. The dragon is not to noticable, I use that one the must because of the full protection, The metal case looks the best, doesn't hurt my signal. Which bluetooth headset do you use?

I actually don't use a bluetooth headset, only the Bluetooth in my car. I was using a Motorola H730 Bluetooth headset about a year ago but my girlfriend uses it now. I may just order the dragon case. It kinda looks like the Spigen cases from the sides of it. I really like the Spigen Ultra Hybrid cases with the clear back. I have one on my Nexus 6. It looks sick with the DBrand Carbon Fiber Skin. I wish DBrand made skins for the X2. This is the only case that is decent that fits the phone perfectly:

I'm using this 3rd party smart cover from Taobao. The fit is good, and overall thickness becomes 12.7mm.
(sorry about the cross-post, but this case is really good so i figured I would post here as well )
I bought one of these:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ilpage_o06_s00
Its a bit of a tight fit when you first get it, but it really only needs an extra millimeter or two of width to make it perfect. I took mine to my local shoe repair guy who stretched it for me, and now it's perfect! It's a great case too. The fact that it can swivel and come off the belt clip has turned out to be really important since the phone is so big.
I like covers that have a window. The X2 window is cool. [BEARLIFE] Silk Pattern Flip PU Window View Leather Case with Inner Hard Plastic Cover for Huawei Honor X2 (7 inch screen) (Black) It has the magnet in it and use smart cover on under display.
This is a "PU leather" meaning not leather at all but cheap and relatively fast. Back is hard. Cover doesn't close completely unless pushed down, but I think that PU issue will go away with a little use. Only issue is it hides the beautiful gold phablet. (I never thought I would say beautiful or gold about a phone.

I have a different gold window version from a different vendor which, which I'm willing to bet is identical except for color.
At < $13, recommended.

Thanks for the recommendation. I am buying this inexpensive one because I want to see how well I acclimate to a flip case. I am eyeing some of the alligator-textured genuine leather ones with the window on AliExpress. I have sent the seller a message to ask if it's a smart case with the sleep function... I am also happy that this one will come quickly!

VR. I did receive the second protector (it took a while crossing the Pacific). It is great. It is gold and the back tray is clear so it shows off the device better. (This coming from black and grey phone buyer.). It has two other major advantages.
1) The side spine is stiff and it closes well. I had to keep creasing the spine.
2) The solid spine allows yo to bend the cover back to sit flat. The important part is it does NOT trigger the smart cover. The first cover magnet did random triggeri g with the device open. Best 13.30 I ever spent.
DO NOT ORDER FROM "AliExpress"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They ripped me off legally and can get away with it.... They couldn't send me the case I ordered so I agreed on another case in its place and they sent me the wrong replacement... Instead of making it right... They said I could send it back for a refund but would have to pay shipping... They still advertise the case I had originally ordered... They are in China and I'm here in the states which makes it easy for them to rip you off...

Sorry to hear that, Steamer! I just squeaked by with a narrow escape on AliExpress. My issue was with an actual Tablet order. I, too, warn everyone to seriously consider who (and where) you are dealing with before you order... I think the stress isn't worth it...

The one that you recommended from Amazon is being delivered on Wednesday. One thing about Amazon... I think they punish you for not being on Prime by extending the processing and ship time of your orders... Ticks me off... Anyway, the one that you recommended came in colors and I chose the champagne gold... I double-checked and it looks like it has a solid color back. So it must be a different one. I am desperate to get it because I am OCDing like crazy not having a case. I still have the shipping screen protector and the back protector on. I will keep them on until they start getting icky... I do already have screen protectors for it. I still am not sure if I am going to acclimate to a flip case... Or be able to set up my phone to take advantage of the window... This is my test case...

I just got this cover from AMAZON today! I got it in Gold. Looks great with the Gold X2! I think a Black one would look good, too. I have some questions... First, I was thrilled to see that the display in the window automatically appears with no setup!!! But, unfortunately, it's not showing the correct city. I am in Suffolk and it's showing Chesapeake which is about 12 miles away… I have no clue how to fix that... My OCD self would be happier if I could!!! Second, my window display only stays on for about 2 seconds and then goes black… is that what it is supposed to do? I wish it would go on when you pick up the phone… Anyway, I like the case so much that I ordered 4 more in Gold from AliExpress (I know…)… they are having their 11/11 sale and they're less than half price… so I got 4 for $14…

I guess you do like the case ;}
Try to go into... weather of all places and change the location to your home or have it update (I think every 30 minutes is the smallest time cycle). Also turn on your GPS and may need need high accuracy, though I always leave it on Battery Savings.
It does frustrate me too sometimes. For example the Transparent weather app widget doesn't update (switched to Ambient Weather), so I think it is an Android issue with the X2, not the window.

I just don't like my phone looking "grungy" so I won't feel guilty about tossing the case when it starts to look worn! I have the GPS set to the most accurate settings and the weather app I use shows the correct city (although the street address it specifies is always different and never correct - sometimes it is next door and sometimes a block away but my OCD self is ok with that because that shows on the second page and I rarely look at that page…) So I guess I will just have to grit my teeth and deal with CHESAPEAKE! I looked at the genuine leather cases on AliExpress but most didn't have windows. The only one that did didn't have the sleep function... I was a bit bummed… but this Gold is pretty!

You might have to turn double tap off and pocket mode off for the screen to stay on with a call coming in.
.
Unfortunately we don't have double-tap on 702 5.0 The pocket off is a good suggestion. You can also set some other gestures.
The window off is a "feature" of all window cases I have owned across 5 devices, The intent is to save battery. The fix is to lengthen battery. You can set the display time to lock longer.
I just ordered one of these skins. They come in different colors and finishes. Just go on eBay and search for Skinomi TechSkin Mediapad X2.
