From One to S4? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 General

So I had the One since last Wednesday so I am still within my return period. (I got it 2 days before launch). I like the One a lot...but to be honest I'm kind of bored. The screen speakers and build are fantastic! But the UI is kind of..flat? Blinkfeed is cool but I still prefer Pulse. I just think the S4 is more of an "exciting" phone software wise. Maybe its just my "the grass is greener on the other side" mentality right now but who knows.

I own both, was a huge s3 fan. In my opinion the one is a much better phone.

Most of this is personal preference, which was why I said in my opinion so please take with a grain of salt...
I'm really tired of the cheap plastic feel - imo the S4 has a cheaper feel than the S3. Its also super slippery. I don't yet have a case and I've already dropped it twice (thankfully not damaging it). One area where it really is great is the screen - it has to be one of the best screens I've ever seen on a phone. The one has such a great feel, weight and finish that its hard to compare (And I'm a Canadian lawyer living in the US, not a taiwanese student paid by HTC to rip on Samsung ; /).
The software is ridiculous - and feels like a real step backwards from the S3. The menus have been customized for no (apparent) reason other than to add complexity, and it reminds me of my GS1. There is so much bloatware.. but most of it can be disabled. So far I've also had mixed results with some of sammy's gimicky apps like the dual photo feature.
All in all, I'm just a little disappointed with it...

I can tell u I returned my one for most the same reasons as u....the speakers and screen were beautiful, but I decided I want to wait and see what the s4 is all about...I loved my s3 but was never in love with the one....it's a nice phone...I figured (though I hate wasting a restocking fee) I would leave my options open...if in the end I decide to go back to the one I can (sorta wanted black anyways) or stick with a phone that I was more familiar with...in fact using my backup one x is boring me lol...guess I just personally always liked smasung phones...maybe it's just me but I really wasn't satisfied with the ones picture quality with just simple shoot photos
Oh an FYI I was told by att that if u preorder then ur two week remorse period starts the day of the contract renewal and not the date u actually recieved the device...I thought that was bs but that's what they told me...luckly my reciept showed the April 15th date and not the 4th when I ordered so the store didn't give me a hard time...but again who knows if the rep knew what the he'll she was talking about...

I'm sure you can post it up and craigslist and get someone to trade an S4 straight for it. Of course, if you're within the 14 days, go exchange it. Less hassle

They are both great phones. I love the s4 after coming over from the Note. Awesome screen, awesome camera features, Touch Wiz is great too (yes I love touch wiz) The only draw back is the bloatware which I will be removing after root

Its a matter personal preference. If you were bored by the one that quick then most likely you'll be bored by the gs4 as well because neither will wow anyone. I just prefer the bigger screen, led notifications, lighter weight, camera megapixels, better ir remote feature, and just wait until you can custom ROM/kernel this beast. Should hold me over till the nexus 5 gets released

I hear all of you! Yea i ordered the one in the 16th and actually was one of the few to get it the 17th. Btw i dont have a receipt for it. I'm sure they can just look up the imei or something right?
For those with both phones, how's the gs4 screen compared to the one? And is that. 3 inches that noticeable?

Yeah I couldn't get the Htc One to work with my Direct Tv box. Neat thing it didnt at first with this one but this one took me through a simple ir/rf reconfiguration and viola controls everything. So simple yet I am loving it lol

The h/w specs are about the same. The One's got forward facing speakers, a smaller display, non-expandable storage, a fixed battery, and a different but not universally better camera. The SGS4's thinner, lighter, has a larger display, 13MP camera (the iP5s will be 12MP), bigger swappable battery, expandable storage, DDR3 memory, GG3 and 4.2. The biggest advantage for the SGS4 is customization and what its s/w can do. If that doesn't mean anything to you stick with the One. I had a One X and Sense 5 does less than Sense 4+ because HTC removed themes, scenes, and a lot of popular widgets to accommodate BlinkFeed which isn’t very customizable, can’t be disabled, and not universally loved. I'd have a real hard time going back to Sense and its lack of features.
Here's what the SGS4 can do s/w wise. If none of the below means anything to you than pick whichever phone makes you happiest.
The ability to turn off the capacitive button lights so if you're navigating or watching flash-based video in a browser they don't distract you.
Long pressing a function in the notification bar opens that function. (EG: short press Wi-Fi = toggle, long press=open Wi-Fi settings) so you have quick access to most used settings no matter where you are in the UI or an app.
Customize which functions appear in the notification bar and reorder them.
Unlock the device via voice including separate commands to unlock via voice directly in to various apps.
Use voice to control the music player, take a picture, snooze or shut off the alarm, or accept or reject an incoming call.
Launch the camera while the device is locked by holding a finger on it and rotating it from vertical to horizontal.
Smart Stay to keep the device awake when looking at it and Smart Rotation to keep it at the same orientation as your eyes if you change position.
Music Hub subscription service with locker storage (matched) for your own music and the ability to download unlimited songs (while subscribed) to the device's SD card and have them all show up in the stock music player.
Music Square which determines the "mood" of all your stored music and allows you to instantly create playlists based on the mood of a song you're currently listening to.
S Voice to control a much broader list of functions by voice than what’s supported by Google Now and dial by name or number via BT including sending MMS and e-mail.
Quick Glance to see time, date, weather, battery life, missed calls/messages, and new e-mail by waving your hand over the device without unlocking it.
Customize your e-mail signature in the stock e-mail client including different fonts, colors, and graphics.
Direct call to automatically dial a number from an open contact, MMS, or e-mail message.
Palm touch to mute the device by covering it with your hand.
Driving mode to read incoming MMS and e-mail aloud.
Airview to preview contents without having to open them (e-mail [body and sender], MMS, web links, pics, videos, and docs in folders). Airview also lets you see the detail of incoming messages (MMS, missed calls, and e-mail) by hovering over the notification on the lock screen.
Hover to control the display (up, down, across) by hovering over an edge. It also allows you to use drop down menus on websites rather than having to click multiple links to get to the page/topic you're looking for.
Multiview to look up stuff in one window to use in another or check something in somewhere else without interrupting what you're currently working on in another app.
KiesAir to send and receive MMS while the phone's docked and reject incoming calls. Also access all your content via a PC; even when using someone else’s.

I had the One pre-ordered on 3 different occasions, twice through HTC.com and both canceled due to stock issues and once through AT&T and canceled due to it not arriving when expected. I got my S4 today and also went by the AT&T store and checked out a One while I was there... The display model they had seemed nicely built but I wasn't blown away by any means or at least what I was expecting. I also found BoomSound to be far over rated than what HTC made it out to be. Maybe I was just expecting too much to begin with but I wasn't impressed. Loving my S4 and Smart Rotation is by far one of the best features out there, especially if you're like me and constantly laying down and texting

I have the HTC one and just got a s4. The HTC one is build nicer and has 64gb storage which I like but s4 is way better IMO. I like all the software features on the s4, the hardware home button, the menu button. HTC sense 5 removed a lot of features that sense had which I liked. I feel sense 5 is lacking. I also hate the fact that you have a 4.7 inch screen but because of no dedicated menu button most apps take up a big portion of realty space on the screen for the menu options. It drives me nuts makes it seem like I am using a 4 inch screen. Also the capacitive buttons don't register sometimes on first touch.

I couldn't agree more with the screen part... Having an S4 where basically the phone is a whole screen vs seeing the One which has a lot more around the screen, it made the One screen look tiny.

Captivate or IP4?

I was in the same boat deciding between the iPhone 4 and Captivate. Here’s my experience with both. Hopefully it will help someone in making their decision. I’m in the Chicago area and ATT works pretty well for me. I won’t go into details about numbers or front facing cameras because you’ve already read about that. I really didn’t want an iPhone. I had a 3G when it first came out and had nothing but problems.
Screen: First off, both screens look great. It’s like being at Best Buy comparing tv’s. Side by side they all look a little different but once you get it home either one will look great. Ip4 has truer color but the over saturated SC really pops out at you. Even though the screen is only a half inch bigger, the border around it makes it appear bigger yet. Ip4 was easier for me to see in direct sunlight. Touchscreen responsiveness and scrolling smoothness is awesome on both. I liked the SC better.
Buttons: I like the physical buttons on the Ip4. They have a definite feel to them and are in the right location or the location that I’m use to. I got use to the SC buttons but hated the mini usb connector coming out of the top. When using a car charger or syncing to a computer it’s always in the way. Whose dumb idea was that? The buttons on the bottom of the screen SUCK. They go off after a few seconds and you have to hunt and tap around until the screen gives the desired response. Again, after a while you begin to get use to them.
Battery: When I got my SC home, battery life was terrible. About 6 hrs. of moderate use and it was dead. That gradually improved and by the second week, the battery lasted all day with 25% to spare. Since I charge it every night anyway, it wasn’t a problem. Ip4 lasts several days but again, I charge every night.
Apps: I don’t really care about how many thousand apps one has over another. Who needs 800 tip calculators anyway? I probably use about 50. Android has a free app called Missed Reminder that you can set to ring/vibrate if you don’t hear a call, text etc. (Just like my Razor V3 had). Ip4 word, excel, pdf documants right out of the box. With Android I used a free app called Quick Office that opened about 80% of these documents. Sometimes I’d get an error message and couldn’t view the file.
Email: I use Hotmail and Ip4 works great and is very fast. I had nothing but problems with the SC’s email. When I first setup my Hotmail it retrieved my mail although very slowly. I could read messages but if there was pictures or attachments the pinwheel would spin (loading) sometimes 10-15 minutes before loading all or sometimes part of the message. I tried having Gmail fetch my Hotmail which was much faster but most of the time the attachments were blank and showed up as 0 kbts. I was able to view my mail & attachments correctly if I went through the browser but that was kind of convoluted way to get it done. I even tried K-9 mail which did not help. I spoke with Samsung, posted questions on this forum as well as speaking with ATT customer service. The best solution they could come up with was to clear the cache. Their final comments were that some phones are better at email than others. I had the phone replaced but still had the same results.
Keyboard: Ip4 keyboard has bigger buttons than the SC’s keyboard so it’s a little easier for me however I think SC’s swype keyboard is the best. Once I learned how to use it I’d never use anything else. The SC’s Speak to text is cool too. As long as you speak clearly, it’s pretty accurate. Great for texting and driving as long as you’re not checking for mistakes. (My bad).
Browser: Both browsers are great and to me, they seem very similar. IP4 does not support flash. On the SC you can zoom way in on text, double tap and it word wraps to the screen so you don’t have to zig zag through the message to read it. Nice.
Wi-fi: With the SC I can be 20 feet from my wireless router and I’m showing poor signal strength. With the IP4 not only do I show a strong signal, I can pick up three of my neighbors as well.
Phone/Data: Both phones have been in cases since they left the store. Call quality is good on both phones. The SC sounds a little tinny but clear. Several times I’ve had the SC echo when I speak into it. Had to reboot it and it was fine. SC has dropped quite a few calls, more than I’m use to. Often when connected to a land line so I know it’s not the other party. Phone can be lying on a table and signal fluctuates between 5 bars and 0. At 0, sometimes calls connect, sometimes they fail. IP4 has only dropped two calls so far (3 weeks) in known dead areas.
Misc: Haven’t really had any problems with the IP4 so far. With the SC I haven’t had the random shutdown issue I’ve been hearing about. I have had the phone freeze a few times while ringing and not been able to answer a call. Had the call drop while removing it from my pocket (many times). I tried removing it by the edges, front and back, etc. I’ve had the phone pocket dial and even had my alarms deleted. I don’t know how because the phone is locked and there are several steps required to do this. I also get a lot of connection error and network error messages while I have a wi-fi or full 3g signal. In my photo’s app, all of my album art shows up as an individual photo album. I have to scroll through hundreds of albums to get to my Pictures. (Maybe I’m just missing something). I’m sure the gps issue will be fixed but It’s been six weeks. You’d think Samsung would have been all over that. It’s just some weather apps, golf apps etc. rely on gps information.
Conclusion: I love the way you can customize the SC. Between the widgets and live wallpapers it can look really cool. I like customizing; I don’t like messing with something just to get it to work correctly. I think the SC is very promising but right now it’s just to buggy for me. Everyone talks about how the Froyo update will fix everything but its all speculation. At first ATT said it was coming out the beginning of August. Then it was September. Now they claim they may not even release it and wait for Gingerbread. They can’t even send out a fix for the gps. I don’t think there’s a smartphone out that does everything. I’ve returned the SC and hopefully in the future when it’s a little more refined I’ll give android another try. As of right now I would have to recommend the IP4 by a longshot.
I can relate to some of your issues. I have both phones and each have + & -.. Overall I like the captivate more because I can do a lot more with it. For resale value the iphone always wins.
If you embed your album are as MP3 tags you won't see it. If you transfer it over as jpg files in the album folder then it gets indexed as normal picture would.
As for connection errors - I don't have that at all. I have only had one dropped call where my iPhone would drop them all the time and sometimes require 4 or 5 attempts to reconnect. You may have a bad antenna on your phone with your wifi issues too.
I lived with the iPhone 3G for 18 months before i got copy/paste and some other missing features - I figure Samsung will fix us up at some point too.
As for the mini USB cable socket - Samsung has home and car docks that set the phone horizontal, so then the plug is in a good place. Let's face it, no location is good for everybody. The bottom port on the phone was terrible for car use (for me) because I would plug the phone charger into a dash socket and then the phone was upside down when laying on the seat - yes i could buy a mount to hold it upright, but with the Samsung, the top port works for me.
Connection error may be a bit of a fluke, bad timing maybe. I didn't experience any dropped call for several days then att started doing updates in my area, 3g finally this month. My iphone 4 friend had the same issues I did for a matter of weeks now both are better. I admit the iphone is a beautiful product but I disagree about the screen, I have never seen a screen where the colors look truer to me than a galaxy s. For me I'll never give up android, so apple implemented folders, big deal I hated the iphone3g and I hate Ios4 even more. I have no icons folders or shortcuts on my home screen, just a few widgets. I use ADW launcher and use swipe up to launch the contacts, long press search to launch navigation, and home on home screen to launch phone. And I use widget locker to go to the phone, text, camera, or email. I could never fumble through pages and pages of icons for phone functions. Just because its a touchscreen it doesn't need more steps than a traditional phone. I wasn't to pick it up and call. Not pickup, unlock, press icon, press tab for number pad, call. Apples interface need work. On android I can make my own interface. I like icon screens to allow icons to be put where I want not bumped up next to other icons. I need to scan the screen too much with my eyes before I can find the right icon and a phone should be more natural than that. On paper the iphone is fantastic but in my hand android wins hands down.

It's just a phone. Just pick one and get a new one in one and half years.
That was extremely painful to read. If you really want other people to actually read this you should space it out properly.

I couldn't agree more. If the phone is really bad, then you have 30 days to return it. If not, then something better will be along in 12-18 months.

+1, it's like he swyped the thing in a few secs lol.
I have to agree with the battery, the Wi-Fi has to be the biggest power drainer and I would have thought it was optimised for power saving. To be honest everybody is trying to be like the iPhone if you think about it for a minute. But I'm still for Android, live without so many restrictions .

Me or the OP? I have a habit of writing run on sentences and pushing paragraphs together. And I did swype it pretty quick. But the op did write a lot.

I must have gotten a good phone, because I wasn't experiencing any of the negatives the OP was talking about (as far as the Captivate is concerned). Wifi range is just as good as my father's iPhone 4, never had a dropped call, never pocket dialed, the 4 buttons at the bottom are always responsive, and just about all the other negatives you said.
Plus, I actually like where the USB connection is, very convenient for me. And I haven't used email on here before, so I can't comment on that.
I'm actually on my second Captivate. The first one had the capacitive touch buttons at the bottom that would push themselves. Outside of that, my wifi signal is pretty much on par with my 3GS. The difference being that the indicator shows the reception to be a bit worse, but the through put is much much better.
The call quality and reception on my Captivate is just as good as my 3GS, however, once again it shows the signal is worse. The big difference I've noticed is that I've never dropped a call with the Captivate, and with the iPhone I would drop about every fifth call.
Some of the issue posted here are non-existen for me. You guys need to give android and the phone some time to get use too. Especially if you had the iPhone for the past 3yrs. I get great battery life remember you're in control your phone do not have things running in the background if you really dont need it.

I would have to say (coming from a 3gs) after downloading and installing the hybrid Rom and seeing what the possibilities are I would definitely say that my captivate blows my gfs ip4 out of the water. Just by switching roms I can see how Samsung and ATT did not do a good job with the firmware. I have better reception. The phone really flies through processes. Like you would expect a phone with top of the line hardware should. and when the devs get a hold of the froyo source I can only imagine how this galaxy s will perform

Also, I skimmed through your review mate, and you really seem to go on too much about little things as opposed to the core functionality of the phones.
That being said, I have experienced some of your problems to some degree, such as imperfect wifi etc.
1 more thing, doesn't captivate come with inbuilt office program such as thinkfree? Because international i9000 version does (as I have).
p.s. don't mean to sound overly critical, I do respect and thank ya for sharing your experience
i think the battery life on the captivate was poor. exchanged it for an iphone 4, sold it, and going back to the captivate, ironically. i just prefer the android UI.

The battery life on this is better than the aria which was horrid. I admit the 3g I had was better in that department after the upgrade to ios 3.2 or what ever it was. But the battery life on the captivate largely depends on what you are doing, running with it.

It really depends what you use the phone for. Personally, I use it for surfing the web, playing games, email, Music, texting, and GPS. Those things are the most important to me, as I basically live on my phone.
With that said, several of those things the iPhone actually does better. Surfing the web is a toss up. The Captivate has an incredible screen with a size bonus, but the iPhone has MUCH better text fidelity and pixel density. Games are a given here. The iPhone's app store just crushes the marketplace right now. Android is catching up, but Apple has those big name developers throwing good games at them every day. Email goes to the iphone as well. The email apps for the Android are sub par when dealing with certain providers like Yahoo. Apple's isn't flashy, but it does work consistantly. Music... Again iPhone is a superior mp3 player. It's easy to manage your collection and buy music on the fly. When Google Music gets up and running they'll be on a more level playing field. Texting goes to the captivate because of SWYPE. It's frikkin fantastic. Then GPS... We know what's happening here. Just waiting on Samsung to come through with the goods.
I wouldn't say the iPhone smokes there Captivate, but you really have to look at what the majority of people do with their phones. One thing that pisses me off with my Captivate is the ESPN app. What a frikkin' dog. Run it side by side with the iPhone equivalent and it's just a slap in the face. For running on equal hardware, the Android app is slow, unresponsive, and sometimes completely non-functional. On the other side of the coin... I love the customization of the Android device. I love being able to flip between widgets and launchers on a whim.
Oh yeah... And I guess I also make calls too. It's a push here, but I do like the speaker of the iPhone a bit better. The Captivate's speaker quality fluctuated from device to device quite wildly, and my most recent handset has a tinny speaker.
@Divinedark I can only agree to the appstore been better than the marketplace, and its the only thing I'm really missing. Everything else android does the same thing in my opinion or better.

HTC Inspire Review

I have had the Inspire for a few days and I thought I'd give my 2 cents. Just to give you some background, I have had dozens of smartphones. I benched my iPhone 4 for this phone.
Initially, my main concern was battery life. I'm happy to report that it's not an issue. While 1250 maH sounds like fail for an Android device with a 4.3" screen, it's obvious that the next gen Snapdragon is very good at keeping power consumption to a minimum. I unplugged the phone from it's charger this morning at 6 a.m. and at 10 p.m., I still had 30% battery. I had two lengthy calls and used the phone plenty to check e-mail and surf the web. I also streamed Slacker for a while. While I would feel more comfortable with a 1500 maH battery in the phone, the 1250 seems to be sufficient. I actually thought HTC was crazy when I originally read the specs.
Loving the new Sense. Not just the performance enhancements (it's fast), but the little things like the ability to skin and theme the device. Unlike Motoblur, Sense UI actually enhances Android. I have always felt this way, having had several HTC Android devices, but now I feel more so.
Screen is great. I don't like that you can see so many of the capacitive screen dots at times, but I can live with it. The screen is super responsive and very clear.
The Camera is actually really good. The main reason I held onto my iPhone 4 for so long was for the Camera. Every phone I have tried (I'm looking at you, Captivate) has let me down in the Camera department, but so far, I find the Inspire's Camera to be very sufficient. I love the interface and all of the effects, and the picture quality is excellent. Overall, the iPhone 4 is still slightly better, but HTC definitely put a good camera in this phone. It's the first phone since iPhone 4 that I actually have confidence in the picture quality (Samsung Focus was close) and wouldn't hesitate to use as a standalone camera. As some reviews have stated, the flash does make some night shots yellow, but this only appears to be true of fairly close-up shots.
Honestly, the only thing I wish this phone had was a Front Facing Camera. As little as I used it, it was just nice to know I had it on my iPhone 4. Still, I wouldn't trade this for an Atrix. I know that the phone will be more stable, functional, and I'll get an update to Android faster with HTC. Motorola soured me when I had my Droid X and proved that they shouldn't be allowed to mess with software.
Forget dual core. While the specs of the Atrix are impressive, I find this phone to be very responsive and smooth. It's clear that the next gen Snapdragon is more than sufficient for the task.
My only real wish with this phone is that I could uninstall ALL of the bloatware. I hate that about Android. WP7 lets you uninstall all apps and iPhone doesn't allow any in the first place. Android seems to be the whipping boy of carriers. I hate that the apps are ROM locked and that you have to root to get rid of them. This is especially true of the AT&T Navigator, which is pointless on Android in the first place. It's deeply integrated, too, so it shows up as an option when you click on a contact (use AT&T Navigator to get you to their address). I could hide these apps with Launcher Pro, but I shouldn't have to. AT&T disabling app side-loading is crap, too. We can always use side-load wonder machine (thank you Android Central), but disabling the feature is like taking a steaming dump on what Android is about (openness) to me.
Still, overall, I feel this is one of the best devices available on AT&T, and the only real Android option. Samsung needs to sort out their GPS issues (no, the software fix didn't resolve it. The issue is bad hardware) and Motorola (looking at you, Atrix) always manages to ruin perfectly good hardware with an encrypted bootloader and buggy software "enhancements". If you don't absolutely need a FFC, then this is your #1 Android choice on AT&T.
Sorry for the long-winded post. I originally set out to say "hey, the battery life really is good" and got carried away.
Good review,
And I pretty much agree 100% with everything you have said.
But as I may have to have a FFC I'm going to keep my iphone 4 around for a while.
I still can't believe that I may actually have to have a FFC soon. HAHA whatever my company is odd.
I was running the DesireZ Rom on my HD2 and I'm quite pleased with how this runs in stock form. I can't wait to get rid of the junk.
Coming from an HTC Aria, I also had concerns about battery life but was immediately impressed when I started using the Inspire. My first run of the battery from a full charge was about 28 hours which included phone calls, texts, web, pandora and much camera and video use at a concert. I got this phone expecting it to only last 12 hours max but was pleasantly surprised. I was expecting a lot of battery drain even when not in use but that hasn't been the case at all. Battery consumption remains relatively untouched when the phone is not in use. I turn off data, gps and wifi unless I need them; I don't need things syncing constantly. I also keep the screen brightness at about 40%. I can't wait to see even better performance once I root and install a custom ROM.
I should also mention that the Inspire charges very quickly, at least as fast as an iPhone and much faster than any of the Galaxy S phones.

One more update: I said in my review that the only thing I really missed was a FFC and the only thing I really used that for was self portraits.
I just discovered in the camera app on the Inspire, not only a self-timer (yay), but a "self portrait" setting. The self portrait setting automatically uses face detection to take the picture after you turn the phone around. I just tested it and the picture came out perfect.
I'm officially sold on this phone.
That was totally my exact feelings. I love this phone! I sold my Iphone 4 for 445 and am so glad I exchanged the Captivate for this baby. The pictures are awesome! The speed is great and yes, there are apps I miss on Itunes, but my hubby has an Iphone 3gs...

For self-portrait? It's built into the camera software. You launch the camera, then push menu and it's the first option.
I tried playing with it but I'm a bear of little brain do I select self portrait then press the shutter then turn the camera around? Or turn the camera around and try to find the shutter button when I can't see it?

You don't have to push any buttons. After you select self portrait, just turn the phone around and try to hold it steady while it finds your face. There needs to be at least decent light for it to work.
That's pretty cool. Thanks
Will it work on T-Mobile?
Do you guys think i will be able to use it on T-Mobile US, with 3g? I had a Desire HD but had to sell it because it was only Edge with T-Mobile
Thanks

Nope same problem all ATT phones have on T-Mob. The data is using the wrong radio frequency to be 3G it will be edge only.
I tried out the demo in an AT&T store yesterday and I really love it. My one problem with it was the ring around the camera feels....wrong. I don't know if it was just that unit but you could turn it and it made it feel cheap. This isn't a big enough problem to keep me from buying this phone once my birthday comes around in April but it bothered me. Anyone else notice this?
Just tried to turn mine and it won't.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I'd need a pair of needle nose pliers to even begin to move mine. Sounds like the demo unit has seen some battle action.
Mine either
I don't particularly like the way it protrudes, but I can live with it. A case would take care of that (it would even out the back so it was flush with the camera protrusion), but I don't like using cases on my phones.
You also have to be careful when you set it down, or it'll scratch the metal ring around the camera. While this protects the lens, it'll decrease the value later if you want to sell it. Otherwise, I love the build quality.
The only issue I have had is that the Messaging app seems to lock up my phone completely every so often. I haven't tried an alternative, like Handcent to see if the issue persists. I also couldn't place a call or get data today until I reset the connection (airplane on/off), which is a first for me.
Overall, pretty minor bugs for a very nice phone.

After having tried it in low-ish light, I recommend LOTS of light, and disabling the flash.

I've seen Android phones get better and more powerful over the years, as Google and phone manufacturers pack devices with more and more features. There comes a time, though, when less is more. I'm afraid we've reached that time.Samsung's new Galaxy S4 smartphone is an excellent device from a hardware standpoint. Measuring 5 inches diagonally, the screen is slightly larger than that on its predecessor, the Galaxy S III. Yet the S4 is a tad lighter and smaller overall. The S4's display is also much sharper, at 441 pixels per inch compared with 272 on the S III. The S4 has one of the sharpest screens out there.
The Android operating system it runs is excellent, too, and in recent years the Google-made system has become a healthy competitor to Apple's iOS system for iPhones. Like most Android phones, the S4 comes with a suite of useful Google apps, including Gmail, YouTube, Google Maps and the voice assistant Google Now. Because Google lets device makers customize Android to suit their needs, Samsung and others have been adding their own distinguishing features.
And that's the source of the problem. Packed with bags of tricks, phones have become way too complicated for many people to use. In some cases it's because these custom features work only some of the time. In other cases, you're confronted with too many ways to do similar things.
As much as Apple can be criticized for exerting control over what goes on its iPhones, it wins on simplicity. There are no competing agendas - just Apple's.
By contrast, Android has turned into a free-for-all. For instance, the Sprint version of the S4 phone has at least four different ways to watch video - one that comes standard with Android, one added by Sprint and two added by Samsung. Some content works with one but not the others.
And to watch video on one of the Samsung apps, the one called Samsung Hub, you have to navigate through two screens trying to sell you video that I couldn't get to work on the other apps. As much as it adds to the clutter, Samsung would rather you use its service and not the standard Android one. That way, Samsung rather than Google gets revenue from video sales. Samsung Electronics Co. has its own app store, too, to rival Google's own Play store on the same device.
That doesn't mean you shouldn't consider buying the S4.
Another highly praised phone, HTC One(Review I Pictures), has a lot of clutter as well. The display on the One is slightly smaller than S4's, but it has a higher resolution. The One sounds better, too, with front-facing speakers, while the S4 has a speaker on the back. The One might be the one for you if you watch a lot of video and listen to a lot of music. But the One feels heavier and bulkier, and its battery holds less charge than the S4.
The four national wireless carriers, plus U.S. Cellular, Leap Wireless' Cricket and C Spire, will sell the S4 in the United States. Release dates vary, and some will start this week. Expect to pay $150 to $250 up front with two-year contracts (T-Mobile calls them installment plans as it markets contract-free service).
Despite my complaints with all the add-ons on the S4, a number of them show promise
Easy Mode
It's not entirely new, as the S III and the Galaxy Note 2 have it, too. But Samsung makes that option more prominent when people set up the S4 for the first time. Icons in Easy Mode are larger, so you are less likely to hit the wrong one and have to figure out how to go back. You also get fewer choices for customizing the phone and using its camera, so there's less confusion about which to pick. Easy Mode isn't as easy to use as I would have liked, though, because features and settings from the regular mode creep in now and then.
Multi Window
Again, this feature isn't entirely new, but it's the first time I noticed it. It allows you to run two apps side by side, the way you've long been able to on traditional computers. That means I can keep up with Facebook on the top half of the screen, as I send email from the bottom half about all the dumb things my friends are saying on Facebook. Unfortunately, it works with a limited number of apps. Foursquare and Instagram aren't among them. And I needed an online video tutorial to figure it out.
Air View
When you point to an email or calendar entry with your finger, you see contents pop up in a bubble. That way, you don't have to open the entry and find the back button to return to what you were doing. Samsung has this feature on the Galaxy Note 2 phone, but that's designed for use with a stylus. On the S4, you simply hover over the entry with your finger. I wish it would work with more apps. For instance, you can use it with Android's generic email app, but you can't on the one made specifically for Gmail.
All of these would benefit from being part of Android rather than an add-on from Samsung. Easy Mode would truly be easy if it were designed from the start that way rather than as something that couldn't fully separate itself from the main Android. More apps would work with Multi Window and Air View if they were standard features, not ones app makers have to adapt for one by one.
And then there are some features that got in the way
I mentioned the competing ways to watch video and buy apps.
Another is Smart Pause, which automatically pauses video when your look away from the screen. The phone's front camera detects your eyes. Smart, but the feature also pauses the video when you cover your eyes, say, to avoid a gory scene in a horror movie. It's as if the phone is forcing you to look. And there are few times my eyes are glued to video. I typically multitask and watch video while doing other things.
Smart Scroll detects the tilt of your head or the phone to automatically scroll text, such as when you're reading a long article on a Web browser. Smart, but it sometimes scrolls past what I want to read. It's difficult to move the text back without touching the screen, something Smart Scroll is supposed to eliminate. And at times, I have to keep my neck up in an uncomfortable position to stop scrolling.
With Air Gesture, you wave your hand over a sensor for such tasks as browsing a photo album or scrolling through text. I can see it being useful when you need to answer a call while driving (not that you should), but I had difficulty getting the phone to respond properly with photos and Web pages. It reminds me of automated water faucets that won't let me wash my hands no matter how much motion I make.
Fortunately, the phone comes with many of these features already turned off, and you can turn off others you don't need or want. It took me a while to figure out that the Wi-Fi connection on my phone kept mysteriously turning on by itself because of some feature called Smart Mode. So Smart Mode is now off. Group Play is a feature that lets you share music and photos with other S4 users on the same Wi-Fi network. But I don't know of any S4 users, and it doesn't work with Group Play on the S III. I couldn't uninstall the app, so I buried that in a new folder called Junk.
The S4 has plenty of other features I could dismiss. Some might like the camera's ability to erase a stray individual out of photos or to combine several images of motion into a single shot. But I'm a purist, and I'm not a fan of manipulating images. And the feature for using the phone as a TV remote control? That's what remote controls are for.
I shouldn't have to spend a lot of time customizing the phone to turn off or hide what I don't want. Many people never change the default settings. I've been using the S III as my main phone since July, and I've rarely found a need to reach into its bag of tricks. I simply want a phone that is easy to use.
The S4 can be that, but first you must figure out how to hide all its gimmicks.

I have a N2 and a lot of the "gimmicks" on it have been inherited by the SGS4. I like the gimmicks and wouldn't buy a phone in the future that didn't have some of the ones I use regularly. How everyone reacts to Samsung's features is YMMV. Like you said, they can be turned off or people can flash an alternate ROM.

well honestly i feel that Custom roms are much 10X times better then stock , But what i feel is Its better to wait for Note 3 , i would rather prefer Note 3 over s4 any day :good:
so.... you're an apple fanboy?
i'd rather choose 1 way of doing things out of 8 possible choices, or 4 like in your example of the video players, than being stuck with only one choice, that WORKS even though you might like one of the 8 choices better.
running gingerbread steeldroid. for my launcher... i use ADW on my droid 3. MX player for my videos. and handcent for my texting. i simply use them by default.
lastly, i feel like this is a review meant for phandroid or android central, not XDA haha.

Note 3 would be awesome and guess what? The same features that you call gimmicky are one of the main reasons why people love the note in combination with the Spen and the fantastic battery life. The note 2 wouldn't have been as successful if it didn't have an S pen and multiwindow. Imagine if the Note 3 comes out without an S pen and the airview and all that (believe it or not some folks call the S pen gimmicky but those of use that use it for real will find a hard time to part ways with it). Would you still get it? Probably not cause then it becomes a big phone with great battery life but nothing that makes it special or stand out.
People love criticizing Samsung for many things, plasticky, gimmicky, cartooney touchwiz ect.... But those exact same things are what make people want more of Samsung and folks don't take a second to realise it. I actually applaud Samsung for trying to innovate and bring new features to the table, features that like you said, can be turned off anytime if you want.

I disagree strongly here. I watch a lot of movies and listen to a lot of music on my phone, and by all accounts the Galaxy S4 is seeming that it will be the best for these.
-I may be wrong, but AMOLED seems better for darker backgrounds such as watching movies I believe due to it using less battery in such environments, and the saturation color options allow things to pop out even near the screen edge.
-The GS4 offers a slightly larger screen and thus more real estate to view videos/movies on. The HTC has better ppi, but I think it goes without saying that's not going to be as noticeable as the smaller screen, if it can be noticed at all.
-Ear/head phones, wired and wireless, are always better than speakers for listening to movies and music. The speakers from the HTC produce no bass, and as a simple matter of physics, sound traveling through the air isn't going to compare to sound going by wire straight into your ears. More importantly, you can listen to music and movies without bothering other people. As far as headphone quality goes, I recall that both phones were either equal or that the GS4 produced better quality, but I'm not sure.
Lastly, I plan on carrying around a lot of podcasts, music, and videos in storage for when my connection is bad or I have no connection at all, such as being out of network range or the towers being down/needing repair or upgrades. The Galaxy S4 offers expandable storage for all media needs, a perk not offered in the HTC One. I realize this is only one part of your review I'm picking at but I just felt it was worth noting that improved speakers don't necessitate a device is better for music/movies.

I find Beats unbearable, especially the non high end ones. Have you been to any audiophile forums at all? Go on and check what most audiophiles have to say about beats audio. Probably you find it great, and lets agree to disagree there.
And the stock headphones aren't that great, but is surprisingly one of the better ones among the rest of the crappier ones. Haven't tried S4/One headphones, but I'm referring to the ones that came with the Note II, which I presume is the same that came with S4 too. Someone had compared all the headphones on head fi, let me see if I can dig that up.

Oh, that's a rip off, but for the quality, I'd pay even 80$ without any thoughts. It rivals many of the high end headphones, it's THAT good. I don't know any <50$ earphones that are even in the same ballpark as KOSS KSC75 anyways.

I like:
the gorgeous screen,
the form factor.....It feels right and many other phones feel small
the sdcard slot
the replaceable battery
the IR port
the battery life
wireless Qi charging..Installed my Qi receiver about a week ago.
**thought of another like**
the ease with which I was able to sim unlock my S4
I don't like:
the locked boot loader
the fact that my FIIO E07K headphone amp doesn't work with the S4's usb OTG.
the way the emmc is partitioned, leaving only 9GB or so free on the 16GB version of the S4
I wouldn't call my ATT Galaxy S4 the perfect phone, there's definitely room for improvement, but in my opinion it's still the best phone I've used and I don't regret upgrading from my international i9300 S3 (which is still a great phone. )
love:
Dev support - super easy to root/flash recovery
4.2.2!
customizable toggle/expandable toggles
lock screen music controls
performance
battery life
more logical system menus
hate:
page buddy is gone
single finger zoon is gone
"light" theme compared to "dark" theme of s4, though its growing on me
16 gig is really less than 10 gig
heavily bloated
Here ill go, I love the phone. Specifically the hands free features, I can really wow people with that. I like the fact that this phone has alot of popularity, that means more development! there is not much to say because it speaks for itself!
The only thing I really dislike is the feeling of thinking I'm gonna break it, or the hard time I'm having adjusting to the Samsung keyboard. That's really the only things I don't like really! Haha which one of those isn't even due to the phone it's my own problem. But really this phone is damn near perfect!

My only complaint is that coming from the Note1 the S4 is way too small. I also miss phablet mode (210dpi is unusable on the s4)

The Google keyboard from the play store will solve all your woes.
I really like the form factor.
My only complaint thus far, coming from a Nexus device there isn't much development for this phone, comparatively.
I think I also preferred on-screen buttons only vs the physical home button.

The thing is, this is a newer phone.

Having just come back to it from the ONE I can confidently two you that the s4 is the best phone on the market. The display is perfect the home button is a life saver and the overall form factor just works better for me. Now that I've got the Google edition ROM I've basically got a 5 inch 1080p display Nexus with removable battery and expandable memory with the perfect button setup!

Coming from the IOS world, I can honestly say I'm glad I made the switch to Android.
What I like:
Size/Form Factor
Removable Battery
Smart Screen, Motion Gestures
Built in Call blocking features
Removable SD Card
Being able to flash ROM's
Not having to have dedicated software for my apps..ie..iTunes
Dev support
What I don't like:
The plastic back. It wasn't a deal breaker I just don't like how it feels.
The speaker is on the back of the phone.
S-Voice, I really relied on Siri and S-Voice just doesn't cut it to me

S voice is junk compared to Google now. Witch you do have I believe by double tapping your home button or one of those. Google now > siri

It's been amazing so far since i bought this device. Coming from the HTC One X which was also a great device but felt like a huge upgrade when i got the S4
Things i like:
External SD
Great Battery life
IR Blaster
Smart Stay
Amoled Display (really missed it from my samsung captivate and nexus s)
Nottach Xposed (so many tweaks and customization)
Dev support is great and we can run international roms with a loki'd kernel. What's not to like
Maybe the only thing i dislike or taking a bit time to get use to is the home button. I have gotten use to having all capacitive buttons. Will miss the sweep2wake feature i had with the One X a little.

Dislike how my phone lags at times

Love:
Clarity of screen (coming from an S2)
Smooth feel of its operations
802.11ac (seriously, invest in a 802.11ac router and stream 1080p from your phone. It's sick)
Some of the camera options and quality
Battery life
Dislike:
AMOLED is made of egg shells
Stock body is slippery as heck (compared to the friction back of the S2)
Bloatware like made
Shakey cam before fine tuning.
Still love this phone. I don't care if I spent $200 to repair it's first cracked screen. This phone is well worth it. Can't wait to finish my current development project and go back to Android dev work.

Like:
Beautiful display
Fast and powerful
32gb option
Sd card
removable battery
Dislike:
physical home button
bloatware (rooted and froze it)
speaker on the back
body is slippery (use a case most of the time but would like to go naked sometimes)
Overall I love this phone, I was unhappy with touchwiz, but Google edtion rom has "fixed" all my software woes.
My only complaint is about the buttons at the bottom of the screen, they are so close to the amoled, i often accidentally "hit" items at the bottom when clicking menu, home, back etc...

This. My note2 didn't lag like this. Rooted gs4.
I'm surprised how good the battery life is. Easier to pocket due to smaller size.

same here I had tried all Stock based ROMS and the lag still there,,, the only ROM that doesn't lag is AOKP, but I'm not a fan of AOSP.

Just bought a Pixel!!

Just got myself a Google pixel yesterday and restored it from my BlackBerry dtek50. So far I'm kinda OK with the phone. The BlackBerry hub integration isn't as good as dtek. No double tap to sleep function and battery percentage is not legible at all as it's inside the icon. I'd all of this on my dtek which costs half of the is phone
One question.. I really don't know what the default wallpapers are. I see a lot of walls under earth and live earth ..are they the default ones that come with pixel? Since I restored mine it had my previous settings which have all the walls from various apps I'd before.
I hope to keep this phone and not all it and get back to my BlackBerry..

To answer your question, those are the default ones that come with pixel. Live earth, live data, new elements, sky high, earth, landscapes, cityscapes, life, textures... Of course, most people (I think) just download/use their own.
Other than that, I don't think there is a double tap to sleep function, but 7.1.1 updated some things so you can have your phone go to sleep when you set it down.
Battery percentages... find an app/widget. If you want it in your notification bar, there are apps for that, but if you want it to replace the current one you might want to look at alternative launchers, or if you're really tech savvy I might look into the world of Root & ROMS.
It is a great phone. But [email protected] from BlackBerry dtek50 for a business user I can't justify the price increase other than the camera and fingerprint scanner. Hub and email work a lot better with dtek 50 which is the most important aspect of a smartphone for me. I don't notice any performance difference in normal use (I don't play any games on my dtek). So I ended up selling it after a couple of days!!

I'm kind of confused. You almost seemed happy you have a Pixel. Only to basically double back to wanting your blackberry.
I feel like the Pixel is going to shine more for people who use their phone to the fullest. If you rely on ONE app for a smart phone, maybe this isn't for you? I can tell you right now, I use mine for business and am constantly flipping through Sheets,Docs,Drive,Gmail,Chrome,etc.... (Yes, I've googlefied my job) and my G3 and 5X before it can't come close to how fast this phone can multitask. It's made my job not easier.... Just better.... more fluid. No more standing in front of a customer waiting for something to load so I can show a email or something.
I dunno. If you don't feel pleased with how much you paid, I don't think you ever will. After everything I paid 848$ give or take, and I don't regret it one bit.

I see your point. I do see my phone a lot but manly for business - talk, text , email, browsing and little bit of whatsapp.
Things I missed eight away on pixel when I had it for a few days:
BlackBerry calendar - when I have conference calls , I have an option to dial in directly from calendar with one click. No need to dial in and out conference id etc
Swipe gestures - regardless of which app I'm on in an always get back to the hub with one swipe. It's priceless for my work
Double tap to wake and sleep - I think pixel has only double tap to sleep option
Productivity tab - easy access to calendar events, email etc
BlackBerry keyboard. Simply the best virtual keyboard. The predictions and swipe gestures are so good
Plus obvious the cost - my dtek costs half of pixel
What I don't like on dtek is the camera it's pretty average. Battery life could be better.
