[Q] [TIPO] AGPS question - Sony Xperia Miro, Tipo (Dual), J, E

In theory A-GPS is "assisted GPS" which is utilizing the satellites as well as mobile/wifi networks. In some devices however there are no GPS chips and location is determined only using cell network. Manufacturers still call it "AGPS" though. My question is - how it is in case of tipo? Can you get accurate location without using wifi and mobile network?

Tipo can use gps without data. Just dont tick the top item in location menu. But it will be less accurate. If data is on, I can get more gps satellite lock.

I don't own the Tipo yet. I am asking because I had the idea to use it for endomondo ( www endomondo com ) when having fun on my bike. This requires tracking without data connection when I am not in the range of mobile network (or just want to save batteries a bit). Accuracy might be important too. Could you please show me the results you get from gps test application ( https play google com/store/apps/details?id=com.chartcross.gpstest&hl=en ) ? How many satellites you can lock (of course without mobile net/wifi) ? I would really appreciate it !

This is just gps, no data. This location is a shop near my house. Ayer tawar, perak, malaysia.
Sony Xperia Tipo ST21i

It looks nice!
I had doubts because in case of my Tablet S the gps is useless (even with data connection). Your small devil however seems to be performing pretty well. Thank you!

Also, its best to activate gps lock under clear sky, preferably on a clear sunny day, not under the tree. Maybe you should try with your tablet first. Dont forget, use pimp my rom to set your gps.conf to your current country.
Sony Xperia Tipo ST21i

What do you mean by "gps lock" ? In case of a sony tablet the gps works but it takes ages to lock satellites (when the sky is clean, otherwise its impossible) and its enough to get in between the buildings to lose the connection. In the car for example it does not work at all. It is funny since the galaxy ace (some budget phone from samsung) of my wife never had these problems! It locks immediately and works like a charm even if I am travelling by car through the city and the sky is completely covered by the clouds.
Dont forget, use pimp my rom to set your gps.conf to your current country

Is it possible to edit gps.conf wihout root? And what you can tweak in this configuration file?

It means try to get as many satellite as you can before you start moving. You should get gps lock in less than 30sec for tipo (gps only mode). Sorry, cant access it without root. The file provides better gps locking at a certain area (my gps.conf is set for malaysia). Using pimp my rom, I just pick in what country im using gps right now, and restart the phone. You can also try it on your tablet s if it fix your slow gps issue.
Sony Xperia Tipo ST21i

OK then the general conclusion is - even if it does not work out of a box I should be able to make it work. As for rooting my tablet - I am afraid I would brick it. On the other hand, I won't hesitate to play hard with Tipo

Tipo should be easier to root, even if you bought a v27. This new version is much more stable.
Sony Xperia Tipo ST21i

I don't know which version I will get. So far I found that in my place the cheapest is "special edition - billabong"... whatever it means Anyway I will buy this one and if GPS doesn't work I will blame you. Just kidding
A little offtopic here - people say the batteries are pretty good in tipo. What is your experience?

Battery kinda ok if youre not updating fb every 30mins So far,if im always on 2g data, I can get all day usage (from 9am 100% to 12am 20%). 3g kinda 0% here (im in rural area). Not touching any games though. Wifi all day + browsing will get you around 7h max. I guess its nice sony gave us 1500mah than 1200mah in galaxy y.
Sony Xperia Tipo ST21i

Not so impressive but I cant expect more from smartphone I guess. I noticed you always answer using tipo. How much time it took you to get used to such a tiny keyboard?
Sent from my Sony Tablet S using Tapatalk HD

A week of messing around inside stock keyboard app and I found it. Alphanumeric mode. Much better than the cramped qwerty mode which im used to in my old nokia 6680. I dont know if there is another under RM500 phone with bigger than 1500mah battery than can last more than 2 days (high usage), not even the big galaxy s3.

Finally decided to buy xperia sola but thanks for help anyway!

GPS problems on desire s

Hi.
I'm from Russia. Sorry for not perfect english.
I bought my HTC Desire S about 2 weeks ago on clove.co.uk.
It is cool phone but i have problems with GPS.
Applications can't show my place if i uncheck flag "Location->Use wireless networks " in phone Settings.
I tried to use Google maps, open gps tracker, Yandex maps.
Also i tried "GPS TEST". I waited 15-20 minutes. It finds 9-10 satellites, but latitude and longitude equals 0.
I tried "GPS FIX" but it also useless.
Can anyboby help me?
Is it hardware or software problem?
Thanks.
Are you outside (not in building)? From my previous experiences, I can say GPS doesn't work in buildings (or isn't that accurate).

Same thing here. I'm from Russia too. I've just bought the device, and have almost the same problems. I tested the device outside my office - still 10 minutes to get GPS locked
I have been experiencing the same issues outdoors in south west UK makes foursquare impossible
Sent from my HTC Desire S using Tapatalk
Have the same problem here
Installed "GPS Test" and it shows the strengths of the signals of the satelites.
I haven't had a value over 36 SNR but it finds about 10 satelites very fast. Then it takes 5 min to lock and it is impossible to lock if you are walking.
Is the GPS better on your devices. Would be interesting to hear values from people who don't have problems.
Hi guys...this is most probably cause by the presence of built-in A-GPS feature....due to that feature DS can no longer lock on it's own...or it means a great struggle...Locking onto GPS requires a great computing power... apparently the GPS chip in DS isn't the top product...
Hey, if you're root/S-OFF, did you try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1060963 ?
I had the same issue but it's gone after restart.
Having the same issues here, this is a return the phone type fault, and no gps = key things missing from the phone.
It was hard for me to get a fix accurately but GPS Fix really helped. But definitely go outside to use it.
seems like a-gps has old data, dunno how to refresh it on it's own, but the free app "gps status" will do it if necessary. be sure you have internet access (wifi or cellular), gps is on, and start the app, it should update the a-gps data and the phone should find a fix. otherwise the gps sattelites are transmitting the same data (almanach) but very slow and it takes sometimes 15-20 minutes. the alamanachs contain the latest corrections and without them any gps device will give rubbish as output.
i cant lock gps...any suggestion?
It's always worked pretty well for me.
GPS Fix works wonders.
I have the same problem and I have tested with the HTC Hero as well with the same problem. I have been on the Orange to see if is there problem but with no luck! Trying GPSfix now! I am wondering if this is a Radio problem or a handset problem! I hope it is not a handset problem!!
Using GPS Status is saying I can lock on to 2 satellites in my room but I lose them very fast. I need to test in other places around Newport and Cardiff to see if I can get similar results.

basically yes...
Basically it's because this phone uses aGPS, not GPS. And Qualcomm's aGPS chip has some issues. Read this...

Yes likely as aGPS pulls satellite info from your cell towers. You may still find though, as I do, that even with the best radio, you'll still need to occasionally run GPS fix every few weeks. My old desire never had this. Mine will get a lock in 2 seconds now, but for some reason if I don't use GPS for a couple of weeks, I'll be back with waiting and waiting for a lock.
I may be noticing it more because oranges 3g service in my area for months (t-mobile merger issues it seems) has been so poor that I've turned 3g off to avoid shocking battery drain and hopeless intermittent data services. I rely on wifi. Now I know why I'm not getting a good lock sometimes. I use an off line gps app as I can't rely on orange 3g to let google maps work. With 3g off I'm not pulling down the aGPS data. This GPS fix app (however it does it) solves it.

[Q] Wi-Fi Problem still exists in HTC Desire S? - Want to buy soon

Hello Friends,
I am new here and I am interested in buying HTC Desire S
But I saw here and on various other forums/websites, that there's a major WiFi signal loss problem when the device is held in Landscape Mode
So, this problem still exists? I love this phone as it's awesome and in my budget and my main usage will be by means of Wi-Fi
Kindly help
Thanks and Regards
Even though i knew that it has serious issue of poor reception and signal drop, i still bought it as i love this phone. And the answer to your question is,
Yes. it still has poor reception.
Now its up to you if you want to buy it or not.
Is it a Hardware Defect?
I have read somewhere, after FOTA update the problem is gone/rectified a bit
Anyways, I am disappointed
I never noticed a signal drop at mine, except that it lasts a little til it gets the full signal back after returning from sleep, but that's cause of my settings.
Maybe it has to do with my radio image.
You find it (and the related thread) at my signature.

The problem was reduced after the OTA, all depends if you use the phone to type when in landscape mode (something I never do) depends on your size (or the size of your hands I reckon!)
Great device!
The Wi-Fi does indeed lessen if held in a certain manner - but because I have a very strong signal from my router it never drops out completely. I imagine it could be an issue if your base signal is low to start with.

Welcome to XDA! Yes I'd agree with previous post. Only really an issue if your router is far away to begin with. And being aware of the cause (covering the camera lens area with your hand) means that in a vast majority of cases, you shouldn't have any serious issues with signal drop.
It's a fantastic phone. Since buying mine nearly six months ago I've not had a single instance where I've had a signal drop out whilst I've been trying to use WiFi. You have to TRY to make it drop out in my experience.
Hey friends
Thanks a lot for all your responses
Just wanted to show you this video from YouTube: www . youtube . com / watch?v=qd7XdLmAFUo - See how that guy is holding the phone in Landscape Mode
I don't think, I am (rather say no one is) going to hold the phone in that way while using it on Wi-Fi
Anyways I have following questions:
1. What happens if the phone is lying on Table which is made from either of wood/metal? Will it get disconnected from Wi-Fi
2. HTC Desires S got Android 2.3.5 and HTC Sense 3.0 updates in UK and these updates are getting displayed as a pop-up notifications and are completely dependent on Mobile Operator one is using.
So, do you know/think, in India (Vodafone/AirTel), HTC gives updates by means of Network Operators. Or we have to install the Updates manually after hunting for them
Once cleared, I will jump and order the Phone online
Thanks a lot
P.S. I am new to Android

1. Never noticed any problems.
2. Maybe, but when I think no one could say^^ But if you take a look at the development section there are many sense 3 and also some sense 3.5 roms based on 2.3.5, if you don't want to wait till it's official release. Without sense you could also get Android 2.3.7 within cyanogen^^
All newcomers are welcome, there are many guids to help you getting started
Swyped from my Desire S
Definetly have problems here.
I have compared it to my other devices, and the desire s has the weakest signal, when far away from the router. It's a realy pain when im upstairs and want to use WiFi.
It also drops a bit when I cover it up with my hand.
The 'fixes' they have around, and built into custom kernels don't seem to work for me either
It's a real pain for me everytime I lose signal and have to reconnect!
It's a shame for me, but other than that I highly highly recommend this phone! It is really good!

It struggles compared to my other devices !
It's up to you
I personally recommended it , its great for the features and price.

It's strange, I get a good Wi-Fi signal anywhere in the house with no problems.
If I cover the plastic top rear panel of the phone with my hand, the signal strength does go down a bit, but it's never been a problem.
Maybe it's like the GPS - I find that the case I bought degrades my GPS reception, yet other people with the same type of case seem to experience no problems.
Overall though, I like this phone despite the imperfections. I don't regret buying it.
Its a very good phone for the price.
India does not have a FOTA update yet but to install custom roms or sense 3.0 you will have to root your phone.
As far as wi-fi goes i have had slight problems with the device but it was solved by using the wi-fi fix and also by custom kernels so go ahead!
I tried to make my phone lose wifi signal but only when i really cover up every part of the back of the phone i see some difference.
But when using normal i never experience any loss.

Wifi is a prob but in my hostel room I got a router attached so no prob but when am out of room it sometime drops signals
Hello Friends
Thanks all for replies
I am bit reluctant in buying this device as my main work is from Wi-Fi and apart from my home I will be using Wi-Fi at some places where the router is kept in upper floor or far away
Anyways, I am considering buying Samsung Galaxy S Plus i9001 as it's in my budget and I can't afford SGS2 or other mobile phones which comes in price range after SGS+ and Desire S
I can live without flash and plastic body
Though I need expert advice/suggestion from Gurus/Masters here: Should I buy SGS+?

Anyone with GPS problems????

I've searched the threads for are Verizon variant of the SGSIII. If this has been discussed , mod please remove.
I'm not a noob by any means. My GPS is driving me up a freaking wall. I've tried from on a pure stock ROM, yes out the box and both rooted .img's. Plus all available ROM'S .
Here is where my adventure begins. It takes forever if at all , to get a lock. If I do get a lock it will stick but that is about 1 out of ten times. I've tried to modify the GPS.conf , with known general tweaks and NTP servers to pull from with no luck, also a few general build.prop tweaks. Then I turned to the market and we all no how that goes , thousands of apps claiming to give you the world with a click of a button. Nada , nothing. I've done full restores, formatted system, efs etc ect, a clean start. Still no luck. Now I thought at one point that maby my GPS is fubared, I highly doubt this. I can see all satellites in my region and it connects to about one or two at the most. When I just look at my maps on my location it is close , it will show me about 100 ft away from the road I'm on or the next road over, or show me on the road but riding along side it. If I'm in navigation it just says follow route , searching for GPS. So I no its close.
This is frustrating cause I'm a self employed contractor and I depend on my phone for everything. So if anyone can confirm some of the problems I've been having or any links or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
(EDIT) After some reaserch and tinkering with the gps.conf I have made my GPS 50% better. See page 2.

I've had the same problem. My GPS takes forever to lock on (if I try to start it up while navigating, it usually doesn't lock at all). And when it does lock on, the accuracy is terrible.
I haven't tried any of the tweaks, apps, or different ROMs or anything, but I shouldn't be really have to. GPS worked great on my now 2.5 year old HTC Incredible, and works fine on the Rezound I play with a lot. This was one of the things I was worried about when I bought this phone... HTC phones are known for having the best radios around... and Samsung radios are known to be ****. Well, this has only reinforced that for me.
For a comparison to the Rezound, see the attached screenshots taken at pretty much the same time, in pretty much the same spot. In fairness, I was moving (although coming to a stop) when the SGSIII one was taken, but the results that came out were actually one of the better ones. Around the time I took the screenshots, I was getting measurements similar to this as well as much worse than this, while both moving and stopped. Hell, you can even see that the 3G signal is weaker on the SGSIII.
I've seen these same issues discussed in a number of forums on here, and I recognize that not everyone has this problem. Most people's GPS locks on instantly and the accuracy is great. But there are still a lot of people who do have this problem, so it's definitely not just a couple isolated cases. I realize that I can take it in for a warranty replacement, but then I get a refurbished phone back, and those usually come with even more problems... which is the thing that pisses me off about the Verizon warranty program... I buy a brand new phone... it doesn't work... I get a refurbished phone in it's place. Samsung needs to just stop making shoddy hardware and it won't be a problem.
Don't get me wrong, I'd still take this phone over the Rezound any day. It's sexier, has a way better processor, camera, and battery life, and has a bigger screen. I just miss Sense and having radios that actually work well
For whatever reason, the old GPS issue thread disappeared. Initially I had no problems on stock, but when I flashed Invisiblek's JB 8-10 build, I wasn't able to lock on.
What I did was download FasterFix from the PlayStore. With GPS off, I launched it, set the region to my region, closed, and then turned on GPS, waited a minute and launched navigation again. See if that works for you. I think FasterFix calibrates your region or something if it's trying to find you somewhere in the world and is taking a while.

FasterFix seems like it might fix the lock-on time but not the accuracy, which is the (much) bigger problem.
I hope I don't. S2 had a POS GPS at first that took forever to fix.
Yea I can get a lock faster with a few play store apps. The thing is like said before, the accuracy is ****ty. Plus the navigation won't function cause of this. I hope someone with in depth knowledge can see what the problem is. I have not given up hope yet lol. I have a few things I want to test out and then I might throw my hands in the air. I need to get ahold of nitroglycerin33 on talk and ask him a few questions.
Jmo. I flashed the radio before Verizon got there ignorant hands on it. I forget what the version name is . I live on a fringe area and I was dropping calls left and right ,bad 4G conection. Now I would say its 60% better.

I agree, GPS not working in these phones seems to be a hardware problem.
My G3 GPS works perfectly (better than my old Rezound in side by side comparisons, it locks almost instantly even inside where I work), but my boss had one that didn't work for ****.
VZ replaced his & now it works great.
My wife's S3 does something entirely different. GPS locks on fine and fast, but it says she's in Clintwood VA, about 500 miles off. First noticed it in the weather widget, but if she opens maps it starts in Clintwood, but locks on correctly in just a few seconds. Weather can be changed manually, but goes back to Clintwood after a while.
Never been to Clintwood, may need to see if there's anything worth seeing there.

That is just a bug in the [email protected] stock weather app, mine does the same thing. It always puts me in NYC which is a 6 1/2 hour drive away.
I use weather & toggle widgets flip clock/weather instead in Nova Launcher & that weather app always locates me perfectly no matter where I am.
Just got it and this is one of the best GPS's I have seen yet. Better than my S2 and my Razr.
My last GS3 had a similar issue too on top of the lock taking forever and it being a bit off. At one point it thought I was in Florida but I really live near DC. My friend noticed it when I was chatting with the FB app and it included Geotags and was wondering what I was doing in Florida.

I could be misinterpreting what you are trying to do, but why would the NTP servers have anything to do with your GPS problem? NTP simply delivers UTC time....

No, it certainly can't! I was just wondering, as NTP just delivers time, and has no positional information...
Agreed the lock does take forever UNLESS you turn on Google Location Services (which I usually have off), and it is accurate as all hell even indoors. I wonder if turning that on with Standalone GPS will solve your issues.
Edit: GPS lock was great with Maps indoors, but switching to Navigation it never locked onto GPS even though it had my location perfectly!
OK if you want to prove my concept feel free to . Let me no if it works for you. Go out side or be in a car while locking on!
1) Download new gps.conf file>>>
http://db.tt/5xvFneRt
2) Replace it in /ect . Rename the original one from .conf to .bak. using a file explorer with R/W enabled , so yes you have to be rooted!
3) Download GPS toolbox https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eclipsim.gpsstatus2
4) Reboot.
5) Enable standalone GPS and Google services NOT Verizon services.
6) Open GPS status select options/tools/reset . Then options/ tools/download
7) Reboot
8) Open GPS status and wait for lock . Mine took 5 min a friends took 3. Then open up navigation .
9) Profit

[Q] Is GPS on Nexus S really that bad?

Hi,
I am using the official 4.1.2 OTA ROM on the i9023 phone. I have recently realised that the quality of GPS is quite bad. The phone would often lose the signal when I am mountain biking in the open, it is nigh impossible to get a lock whilst driving at out-of-town speeds and the GPS Test app only shows 30-something SNR when outside with nothing but the sky above me.
Is that what you can expect from this phone, or is mine somehow faulty?
My contract will be over soon-ish, and I was looking into getting Nexus 4 or RAZR MAXX HD. How is the GPS on those devices? Thank you for the input in advance.
I never had problems with my GPS since gingerbread which could not solved by a reboot. Sometimes it takes a few minutes to get a fix, but that's all.
Well, I have never had problems getting a lock per se. When I'm biking, it is quick to get a lock if I stop to look where I am. Where it fails is e.g. when recording a track - I recorded one which was pretty much jumping between the approximate tower position and the accurate GPS one.
My friend has the Maxx HD and its GPS is pretty good as for the Nexus 4 I couldn't tell you. Also my Nexus S has pretty good GPS for a Samsung device.
The Nexus S was the only Galaxy S variant I had that didn't require the hardware gps fix to get good signal. Make sure you update to the latest modem/baseband. Or you can open up the phone and add a bit of solder to all the gold contacts to improve the signal.
Just get a device that support both gps and glonass, which the nexus 4 will have.

Whenever I use GPS it drains the battery really quickly. 40 minute journey and it used 60% no idea why but when I didn't have a car charger I was pretty annoyed!
Never had any issues regarding getting a lock usually works OK.

Gps kills the nexus S.. I can't even lock on while driving (I'd have to pull over and stop, then wait for it to acquire lock before moving again)
Not to mention the Gps update speed is only 1hz.. Much too slow especially for highway usage..

Huh?!
Where did you get that idea?
It works so well, I even forgot about it...

What app do you use ? I don't have any issues with the Sports tracker app while biking, using it for over a year now, it even runs in the airplane mode without the cell help.

I was using Outdoor Atlas - mainly because it offers support for the Swiss topo maps. I need to give Sports Tracker a shot, but now it is kinda cold for biking
good
thanks...

My GPS is slow to find satellities but after that, never lose signal!
GPS
use a modified gps.conf if your Nexus S is rooted
It works great here! Everytime I need, and fast. Really surprised me, after switching from my old Galaxy Ace. Once I got a lock inside my bedroom, where even the carrier signal fails sometimes.
I have the Sprint variant and have horror stories upon horror stories about the GPS...it once turned my 2 hour trip to a 6 hour nightmare *shudder*
Anyway, I'm rooting and trying out new fixes now before I finally bite and get a new phone, one of the things I'm trying is outlined in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1683366
I did the fix this morning and then flashed a new ROM, not sure if it holds up with different ROMs but I'll try it again should I have issues.

Also, how do you do this?
You can try this hardware mod if you are brave to open your phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9923176, I have opened up the captivate, vibrant and nexus s, it applies to all of them.
Also you can try this gps fix patch, not sure if it work with the Nexus S, but maybe since they're both Galaxy S: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33844820

I have to admit - when I bought my used Nexus S a couple of weeks back, this thread frightened me. However, first time using GPS I got a lock from inside my house in about 20 seconds. That's awesome compared to what I'm used to. The only issue is that the "Accuracy" is only about 10 meters, as opposed to 6 with my Liberty...

Haha I'm too craven to try such hardware tweaking. I will try the patch though.
I can't seem to get the GPS to report my speed to Tasker (I have a profile that auto-responds to texts while driving). Is this a known issue?

UnlockBootloader > Root > Change Kernel > Overclock to 1.3Ghz
Freeze using link2sd :
- Connected Devices (if you don't need to connect to other SONY device)
- Smart Connect (maybe for SmartWatch, etc)
- Sound enhancements (if you feel lag when you use WALKMAN)
- Update Centre (just unfreeze it when you need to update)
Use Zeam Launcher and Freeze Xperia stock launcher
Use Camera ICS+ and Gallery ICS to replace stock camera and album. (just freeze stock Album. Don't freeze stock Camera!)
Disable Google's location service when you don't need it (Settings>Location Services>Google's location service)
This phone have too much running app on RAM (Connected Devices,Smart Connect, etc). You can play Temple Run 2 smoothly if you have much free RAM... sorry for my English hehe :cyclops:
