How much does making and developing an application cost? - General Questions and Answers

Hello world,
I am currently in the process of designing/compiling my own Twitter application for Android. I understand that it would be a HUGE project, but i'm devoting the time just because I enjoy the process. I've heard that applications in development take thousands of dollars to make, but a lot of the answers i've searched for had a development team in mind. An individual to create the GUI, another individual to code/program, etc etc. If I were to do this myself, would it be essentially cost nothing to develop the app? Another concern I have is about the fact that i'm creating a Twitter app. Are there certain licensing fees? Maybe that isn't the right phrase.
TLDR; I'd like to know the cost of creating a Twitter application myself. Would it cost money to develop the app if I don't use a development team? Are there licensing fees involved with creating an app for Twitter?
THanks for your time

Looking for an experienced web/phone developer

I'm not sure where to put this, or even if it's appropriate for XDA, but I love this community and I know there are a lot of talented developers here, so I figured I'd try. If I can't do this here, please slap me on the wrist and lock the thread. I'm hoping that's not the case though.
If you've ever wanted to be the man behind the idea, here's your chance.
I'm in the process of building a proposal to Boulder, Co TechStars to get funding (micro-investment) for a new web project (I'm a developer and a salesman ;-D), but they recommend you play your powers, and have at least a team of two (they rarely accept single founders), so I'm looking for a cofounder. If you like the project and it takes off, 50% of everything is yours. No red tape, no gimmicks.
This will be HARD. It's a big project and you don't get paid until the project launches (don't worry, I won't either haha). Consider this a night-light project until it launches.
I need someone with experience in the following
LAMP, including PHP and MySQL development
HTML, CSS, XHTML, DHTML
Javascript/jQuery
API's/XML/SOAP
RSS
Domain Wildcards and CNAME
Java, smali/baksmali and everything else involved in Android development (which I don't think anyone here will have a problem with)
Objective-C for iPhone
GeoData/Geolocation and Geo-integration
Prefer experience (but nowhere near required) also in:
XCode for iPhone development
Extended JS libraries
C#
J2ME/Mobile development
XNA / Visual Studio (for XBOX!)
Dreamweaver (Yeah, I know.... but it's easy to collaborate, easier to navigate than Aptana, more free-form and cheaper than Zend - we're on a budget and a timeline)
Screen Readers/section 508, accessibility
There will be no monetary compensation until either the project launches or we get funded by techstars - and IF we get funded by techstars for techstars 2011, you'll need to spend 3 months in Boulder for the event while we get funding, resources and mentorship for the project, so again, please be ready for this to be a night-light project for awhile, but if you're ready for it - reply with some information about you (or send me a private message), with your skills and history and the kind of time you have to devote to this project
The project is already patent pending, and if you want to discuss it at length you'll need to sign an NDA.
As for the XDA community - I love you guys and once we're in a functioning alpha, we'll selectively pick XDA users to test and give us feedback, beta will be open to all XDA members for free, and once we go live, beta testers get a free account for life.

I need an app developer!

I have an app idea that I think is going to be HUGE!! I mean, the potential of this thing is way beyond any small time fart app or app to sync contacts. I'm talking growth.
I've started reading and soaking up the Android language, but by the time I could learn something on my own and do everything needed to market it, someone else may come along with the idea.
I want to assemble a team of a few developers, artists, and web builders to form a team. I have a narrative of the app, a general idea of marketing it, and a well planned out idea map. I just need to assemble the team.
I want people I can trust though. To me, the potential of this is likened to a winning lottery ticket - so I'm not going to just start blurting things out. I want to get interested people, talk, get to know each other and then I'll drop this killer idea.
If you're interested, please contact me! [email protected]

Not a dev but looking for help creating a multi-platform app...

I'm sure everyone says this, but I have an app idea that I believe could change small business accounting and acheive great success on both mobile and PC. And if nothing else I would want to utilize it for my personal business affairs. So I am interested in having the app developed and paying for the development. I would then like to ownt he rights to the app and submit it to the app stores. The most important thing with the app would be interfacing with the banking industry (bank account transfers), and ensuring compliance with banking regulations. The human interface and graphic design would be minimalist, simplistic, nothing extreme. If you are interested in developing this app for a clearly stipulated contract price then please message me for more further discussion. I would like to know your prior history developing applications and why you think you could help me with this application.
If you are only interested in developing if you retain some ownership in the app then we could negotiate that.
Thanks in advance and if you have any resources, links, or pointers to help me out it would be greatly appreciated.

Decentralized Application Marketplace - Your Thoughts?

Hello everyone,
We're trying to create a new open-source app distribution platform named Spheris, using blockchain technology. We are really interested in your thoughts – both devs and users. We're also open for possible collabs for those who are interested.
We’re utilizing Ethereum’s blockchain technology to build Spheris as a decentralized platform. This makes a lot of cool things possible:
No registration and transaction fees, as opposed to traditional app marketplaces who charge up to $100 for registration and 30% per each transaction. No technical restrictions or censorship. Optional anonymity. Forget about the need for credit card companies or banks – you will be able to buy and sell apps using our digital currency (Spheris tokens), with the option to exchange for other digital currencies (such as Ethereum or Bitcoin).
Customers will be able to purchase apps without going through registration and without credit cards. We’re also trying to accommodate devs whose apps have been removed from Google Play for questionable reasons.
Your Feedback = Extremely Important
We are in the early process of gathering valuable feedback from devs, and see if this is a platform that devs would like to be on. For users – do you guys see this as a platform you would buy apps from? Would love to start a discussion! For devs - have you had bad experiences with app stores (de-listing, ranking issues, not being accepted etc)? Does the concept of decentralization sound like something you might want to be a part of?
If you need more info, have a look at spheris.io or just ask me here.
Your questions and feedback are much appreciated,
Thanks
PS - apologies if this isn't the right forum for this topic!

Creating a diary app - feasible for a novice or should I hire someone?

Hi all,
I want to create a "happiness diary" app that people can use each day to record something that's made them happy that day, as part of a therapy process. There are already apps which do this, but there are a few reasons I want to reinvent the wheel: many of the existing ones are ad-driven, or associated with fad diets. And in general, I want something that my fiancée can be confident using with her clients, hence the desire to have "ownership".
I'm wondering whether it's feasible to code this myself to avoid the cost of hiring a developer. I've done some coding in Basic at school so I'm not a total novice, but apps are totally new to me. It's a question of how many hours I'd need to invest in learning app programming to create it myself, or whether I should just pay someone else.
I know there's a plethora of software packages for developing your own apps but don't know where to start. If there are any that would be particularly suitable for creating a diary-type app then I'd be very grateful for some recommendations.
Or should I invest in a "Coding Apps for Dummies" textbook and do it from scratch?
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.
Would you be offering it for free? Would you be uploading To the play store or via 3rd party(aptoide, or apk sharing) would you charge a 1 time fee? Or free? Or another method of funding? 50 diary entries free, unlimited $0.99?
