[confirmed] 64GB micro SDXC/FAT64 works - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) Accessories

For data transferring purpose, I took 64GB micro SDXC out from Note2 to Note 8.0.
Lo and behold, it works right away.
Sandisk Ultra 64GB in FAT64 FS.

I'm wondering if there are any alternate formats for these cards seeing as CWM - and I guess ultimately TWRP as well can't read exFat i think i need to do some googling...

You can use FAT32 FS instead of 64 with EaseUS, but the maximum single file size is limited to 2GB with 32.

I was wondering what would happen if i tried ext2/3/4
Or was thinking maybe a couple of partitions...

That's odd. I have TWRP installed on my Note 2, and had no problems installing ARHD from a 64GB microxd formatted in exFAT. The file showed up instantly.

The maximum single file size allowed under fat32 is actually 4GB minus 1 byte, not 2GB.

I had no issues with exFAT on stock Kernal, but could no longer read it once I had flashed Civs one as it doesnt support it. Copied my files to my PC, re formatted the card to fat32. Put all the files back on the card and have had no issues since.
And to agree with what someone else posted. The file limit on Fat32 is a shade under 4GB not 2GB, which is fine for me as I have no need for files larger than 4GB.

No 2 cards are the same so your results may vary from others, but in general the read and write speeds you can expect are defined by what class the sd card is. If you were sold only a class 2 or class 4 card, you may have issues when trying to write to the card in burst mode. In general class 6 or above is what you should be aiming for, but the higher (faster) the better.

[Q] Optimal SD Card?

I asked this at the end of another thread, but there was no response, so maybe it was lost/buried. I thought I'd try a new thread.
Is there an optimal SD card for the Shift? I know that with my Nook, class 4 or 6 was actually the best thing you could use. Any data on what works best with the Shift?

Not a one that I've heard of, or noticed. Have been using one or the other for a while. On several Shifts and on my wife's EVO4G. All different types of Micro SD Cards, from 2 gig on up to a 32gig. Different brands, always see an improvement. One thing I will say. Every phone is different as far as the sweet spot. I use SD Tools to find the best number.
Thanks for all the feedback, guys.
For the record, I use SD speed increase on my Nook and have never had any problems. And I use a class 4 Sandisk in it, because smarter people than me determined it was the best. I stand on the shoulders of giant androids, y'know?

Sandisk makes great SD cards. But a class 10 sd card is way faster than any class 4.
Class Speed
Class 2 2 MB/s
Class 4 4 MB/s
Class 6 6 MB/s

Alternatively you can create a script and drop it into the /etc/init.d/ folder containing this:
Code:
echo "2048" > /sys/devices/virtual/bdi/179:0/read_ahead_kb;
It does the same thing as those apps without taking up resources.

No, it just increases the Read Ahead buffer size in Android so data is copied off the sdcard into memory in larger chunks. Constant writing is the only thing that affects the lifespan of a sdcard.

This is already built in to ScaryKernel and it doesn't make much of a difference.
Differences I noticed with SD card speed:
CPU clock speed/governor
Compcache disabled
A script does use less resources. But the downside is that all devices are different. Because of that some will see a difference with a set script, and some won't. You have to find the specific sweet spot for your individual device. That's where the apps come in handy. They allow you to adjust and test easliy until you get the right number.

Yes, I understand that. But Nook owners/devs have gone to a lot of trouble to test out different classes of SD cards and found the best performance from class 4 or 6. I'm not here to explain it or understand it, I just accept their word. I'll see if I can find a succinct explanation over in the Nook forum.
Ok, too much to pick through. Here is one of the main discussions, with a link to the other.
I just figured that if higher class didn't necessarily equal better performance on one Android device, it was worth asking about the Shift as well.

You don't need an app to find the sweet spot though. All you need is Terminal or ADB and that command in the script while root. Just change 2048 to a different number and run your benchmark. Whether you use one of the Apps or the command line method once the sweet spot is found edit the init.d script and save. Next time the device restarts its automatically applied during the boot process before the Launcher is loaded speeding up the Launcher's startup and App Drawer refresh if you install apps to the sdcard.

64gb micro SD works with TF300, how about using micro SD to add some virtual RAM?

Well there are already users which has used a 64gb micro SD with NTFS format. So I guess that can confirm that it is definitely okay.
On my galaxy y, it's possible to use SWAP (virtual RAM) with the micro SD to add some RAM to the device.
Here is the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1659231
Would that be possible with the TF300?
I've read others here using one with no issue.

afaik android cant automount ntfs formatted cards, you'll need a mounter app or a custom script.
formatted a Sandisk Class 10 64gb micro SD with NTFS from a Windows 7 computer and works fine on the TF300.
Gets past the 4gb file limit limitation.
Haven't tried to copy anything from the tablet to the SD card yet.

If there any speed difference with Fat32 and NTFS? In regard of transferring files since app data cannot be mounted onto external SDs anymore.

There is no speed difference, you need to get a lower class number card for that. Fat32 sucks because it has a 4 gig file size limit. For me, since I use my tablet for a lot of media on the go, I can't put any movies on a Fat 32 card.

ntfs has journaling and more detailed file atributes, this is usefull and make it stronger but also make for a bit of overhead.
shouldnt be noticeable.
Right now i have a class 10 micro sd card 32 gb. I used Swapit Expander and gave my phone 2gb of virtual memory and 90 swapiness. I dont really notice it, i got better quadrant scores but nothing worth noticing. Right now im getting 4837 on quadrant

I think NTFS record filenames in alpha sequence when they are added so when you use any app, the default sequence is filename.
FAT/FAT32 records filenames as first in first out (not in alpha order of filename).
Sometimes, I have to use FATSorter to sort them. We need filename order like TV shows (24h or Spooks MI-5) so video player can play one after the other.

well, that has slightly different packaging to mine, mine had the android logo on, but im pretty sure thats because it was packaged with some androidy software on it (cant say, since i formatted it instantly) but i can say with certainty, that if it is the same card, it works. im using it right now :good:
That same 64GB class 10 card would not work for me no matter what I tried. Mine had the Android specific packaging as well.
I've seen many posts here and at other forums that a class 6 64Gb card should work. I returned my UHS-1 class 10 and have ordered a class 6 which should be here by the end of next week.
The card I have on order is this one:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0063W7XJK/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00
I got that from a link someone else posted, saying it worked fine in the tablet for them.
just try formatting it. cant remember what i set mine to, exfat i think, but i'll check when i can put it back in my pc
did that, NTFS, FAT32, EXFAT, quick and low level.
video files wouldn't play, not even from an SD adapter in the dock, and folders would appear empty when they weren't. It also would not let me copy files to it when in the tablet.

It sounds like a problem with the movie's file format. Does the card work okay for everything else?
You might try a different video player or a different encoding for the movie.

If you 'loading a movie' you mean 'copying a movie to the card', there are confirmed problems with MicroSD cards in the tablet that will result in spontaneous reboots of the device when copying large (amount of) files to the MicroSD card.
If you have the docking station (keyboard) you can try to connect the card to either the USB port of the full-size SD slot using an adapter and copy to the card that way. I have had better success with using the SD slot than with the MicroSD slot.

64gb micro sd card ;) = success

Samsung 64GB Class 10 UHS-1 Grade 1 70MB/s MicroSDXC Pro Memory Card
this is the one I am using just thought that I would share this for anyone else wanting to know.
Hi mate, could you confirm that sd card is working? Today I contact samsung support and they told me that only works up to 32gb.
If it support 64gb would be great! I also have doubts if only the standard sd line, or if plus and pro also works with it.
But could you use all 64 GB?
I am also considering a 64 GB microSD, but it would be useless if I could only be using 32 GB. Maybe try to drop some large files on your card to test?

that's correct.
I'm using a Sandisk Ultra UHS-1 64GB card in my Relay 4G without any problems. Just yesterday had it down to about 8 GB space available, confirming it works past the 32GB barrier. I did have to do an update for Windows XP on my dad's laptop before I transferred files to my external HDD a few days ago, but otherwise had no problems there. (It wasn't till yesterday I deleted some files on the phone that had been copied to the drive - I wanted to keep some vids on the phone for a while and was handpicking them.)
Now if only I could interface directly with my 2TB hard drive (I have it in an enclosure with its own power source), without needing the laptop.

It should be possible, as our phone support USB.
I tried to find some videos on yt if that works, but only this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFGUmDqRKHE
But is not that subject of course, maybe we can move it or make new threat.
Seems interesting anyway.
So the trick is to format the SDCARD in FAT32 instead of NTFS. And the drawback is you can't have a file (music, movie, whatever) that's over 4GB. Okay. Can't think of what one file would be that much, so that seems like a decent compromise.
So I guess my only question is: if you're taking a file, as in drag in drop, from your NTFS hard drive on you computer and placing it on your FAT32 SDCard on your phone, will there be any problems? As well as any problems doing it in reverse?

There should be no problems in either direction, especially if you're doing it over MTP/PTP to your phone.
Another option is to format the card as ext4, which Linux and Android support natively, it's stable, and supports files up to arbitrary size (There is a limit, but it's quite a bit more than the supported maximum card size of the Relay)

I didn't think of this till you responded, but my USB 4GB flash drive is FAT32 and I transfer files from the 60GB hard drive on my laptop, which is NTFS, all the time. I typically do drag and drop, or I transfer via bluetooth.

I've never heard of ext4, but I'll research it. In any case, from the looks of it, the Relay 4G can use 64GB micro sd cards! :good: :highfive:
I think it will depend on your hardware. Mine does not support 64 gig cards in any format on any rom... *sniff*
Hmm... I put in a generic 64 GB card from Amazon.co.uk and it worked out-of-the-box

Is it still working two months later? And if so, what's the brand of the generic 64 GB card?

Just a heads-up - issues with sandisk 32gb ultra micro sdxc

Just a heads-up to anyone who might be buying this card as it's extremely popular on amazon
Seems to be some issues with the gs4 - it keeps on mounting/dismounting by itself and generally being buggy.
Before anyone flames me, I'm aware this is a well documented issue already with the gs3, and indeed there were some 'dodgy' sandisk cards that sandisk fixed in a SEPARATE issue.
However, I've used two different ones of THIS particular card, bought recently, and in two different gs4's, and the problem has arised in both. So you do the maths. Just a heads up in case anyone is worried it's a problem with their card - it isn't.
I have no issues with mine in any way maybe I am lucky then

I have the 64gb sandisk about a week and doesnt have any problem with I9505...
Do you guys both have the sdxc version (not sdhc)?
If so fair enough. The odds seem fairly improbable though so standing by my observation just in case anyone else has troubles and are wanting to identify a possible source

No issue on my 64GB SanDisk card here. Try to ask for a replacement.
No problems here using a 32gb or a 64gb. Mine were from Amazon as well.

I am using 32GB SanDisk SDHC (Class 10) Android version. No issues so far.
I have a 32GB SandDisk Micros SD HC which has intermittent reading problems. Switching off the phone and taking out the Micro SD for a few seconds and putting it back and rebooting the phone solves the problem. This has only happened to me 3x ever since I owned the phone. I'm not sure if this is the Micro SD or the ROM's fault. Putting the Micro SD in my Note 2 works perfectly.

I bought this exact card: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009QZH6JS
SanDisk Ultra 64 GB MicroSDXC Class 10 UHS-1 Memory Card with Adapter (SDSDQU-064G-AFFP-A)
Have had it in my phone since May 1st, use it for videos, music, among a few other things. Lives in my phone except when it's in my laptop for file transfers.
And out of all that, I've had absolutely zero problems, at least so far. I know it's the 64 GB, not the 32 GB model, but just thought I'd add my experience to the thread.
Sandisk Ultra 32gb here, formatted as exfat, never had any issues here.

Same here. I have the Sandisk 64GB ultra SDXC formatted as exFAT and had no issues with my i9505.
Have you guys tried to format the SD card on the phone not on PC?
