Some things about ROM flashing:
Below is some pretty basic stuff go through if you have no idea what a custom ROM is and why should you use a custom ROM
There are two kinds of ROMs available:
Stock ROM or Firmware:It is provided by the manufacturer and the version varies as per the policies of the company. These usually don't have many modifications or tweaks.
Custom ROMs:These are developed by a developer or hacker that enables the users to customize their interface, thereby improving the performance drastically. These are usually heavily modded and tweaked to improve UI and performance.
There are both advantages and disadvantages in using custom ROMs for Android devices. Before loading custom ROMs, you need to root your android device. Rooting will help you to change your privilege from “guest” to “super user”. When you buy the device, you will be having only guest privilege since you will not be able to access all the codes as the manufacturer locks it up. It is considered as a protective measure, but the tech savvy’s are disappointed by this action as they cannot use many potential features or update it.
Advantages of using custom ROMs
Updated versions: You can load the latest and available Android versions which can make your old phone look new.
Great number of feature filled custom ROMs: It will be a chaotic task for you to find the apt one as there are bunches of great custom ROMs available for different devices.
Personalization: There are a number of features that can be customized to suit your taste and working environment. For instance, Custom themes can bring a new look and feel to your device.
Improve performance: The custom ROMs allow its users to find out the unnecessary apps they have on their device and helps them to get rid of them, thus increases the speed of processing and improves battery life.
Better signal and quality: Custom ROMs help you to improve your base-band which in turn increases the signal and quality of your phone call.
Disadvantages of Using Custom ROMs
Warranty Void: This is one of the main reason why people hesitate to root their devices. The manufacturer will cancel the warranty if they find any attempts of rooting.
Bootloops/Bricks: If the rooting/flashing is not successfully done, the device may enter to an infinite loop of booting(called a soft brick) or worse may hard brick(become unusable).
Loss of all Data: When you install a new custom ROM, it will clean up your system and therefore you will loose all your installed apps and data.
Stability:Not all custom ROMs are fully stable and may cause different kind of problems.
By default you have Stock ROM and Stock Recovery installed in the phone.
You need a Custom Recovery to flash a custom ROM.
You don't have custom recovery installed by default in you phone.
You'll need to be Rooted to install Custom recovery or to Flash custom ROMs.
You can't flash Stock ROMs(or better put fxz) using custom recovery.Use RSD lite for that purpose.
Okay so you wanna get started?
The first step would be Rooting your phone.
GB and ICS Rooting
JB Leaks Rooting-Link 1 or JB Leaks Rooting-Link 2.
Done with the Rooting?
Good.
Now install a Custom Recovery to your phone.
There are only two custom recoveries available for Atrix 2
CM-Defy recovery or Bootstrapper recovery
BMM Recovery(Boot Menu Manager)
Both these recoveries can be installed by simply installing an apk.Yes it's that easy!!!
But there are some important points to be kept in mind if you're trying to switch the recoveries or if you want to multi boot different ROMs.
Just go through the respective threads for details.(They are hyperlinked just click on the names :silly

If you had a custom recovery and can still access it, then you can either reflash the ROM you were on or just restore the backup that you (hopefully) made before attempting to overclock. If you didn't have a custom recovery installed then you'll need to flash the fxz that is for your phone's model. Refer to the second post of this thread for links if you don't know how to use RSD lite, or flash an fxz.

Well that's a different story then The solution to that is to retry reflashing your device's respective fxz again until it does so successfully. The fastboot failure seems to be a result of something going wrong during the fxz process with rsd lite or script you may have been using. Try again and see if it works.

I know what you mean lol, I'm primarily PC oriented and when I just got my phone, it was a whole new ballgame. As for your question, you first have to tell us what firmware region your A2 is; AT&T or otherwise. Then after that, you'll know which ics fxz to download and flash. If you can actually access your custom recovery- bmm or bootstrap- then you should be able to just flash another custom rom. Read OP post #2 for the link to the ics firmware thread, but post your phone model region or just post a screenshot of your 'About phone' in settings.

Yes you can do that but from your post history if I remember correctly you're a kexec reject right?
Won't boot for you coz it's still kexec. But yeah if you can boot just flash it with BMM after doing the wipes.

[SOLVED] Will a brickbug affected ICS P6200 hardbrick upon rooting?

Hello,
ICS was not flashed on this tablet (updated through kies or is this method dangerous/considered flashing as well?) and I am not planning on flashing a custom mod after the root (I mainly want to use adb without root restrictions), so this bug should not affect my device because the sticky on the development section says "...should refrain from flashing any type of ICS ROM or ODIN package" and mentions nothing about how rooting the tablet causes the problem, right?
I am also asking this because the steps (from the thread below) on rooting a P6200 running ICS are similar to those of a factory reset which can cause this problem and because CWM is needed/recommended (do I need it? does it flash safely?) only for rooting ICS and not for rooting Honeycomb as it was not included in the OP of the tutorial thread on rooting honeycomb in the android development section.
Also, would a root hinder my ability to update the p6200 with kies to a possible jellybean in the future?

To make it short: No!
The danger of such a brick only occurs, when u try to wipe/format/flash in stock 3e recovery. Especially in leaked ICS stock ROMs. You are totally safe when using custom recovery like aorth's cwm 6.0.1.0. I have that bad emmc revision too, and were flashing firmwares and root a plenty of times now. Still good.
Anyhow, someone released a emmc partition scanner in N7000 forums a couple of days ago(those guys have that problem too). It scans for bricked blocks in your partition. Looks like we have a way to soft fix this soon. Original xda news: http://www.xda-developers.com/android/partition-scanner-helps-your-emmc-bricked-devices/

I read a bit through it, and it actually IS a solution around bricked blocks after emmc brick bug already. He even provides PIT's for p6200 and WiFi only version.
So if u know Linux a bit, you can actually fix it by yourself.
Original thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1667886
And don't worry about OTA updates from Samsung, I am running jellybean on my tab already and believe me: even with a few bugs its a thousand times better than the ICS stock bloatware ROM. I was thinking like you too. Than I got the official ICS update after months of waiting and I thought: *WTF is this??? This is even more crappy than honeycomb!!* So I downloaded CM9 from aorth, flashed it and: * yeah, this is much much better and smoother*
Now I am running JB 4.1.1 CM10 from aorth and iam happy even more!! =D.

I thought all flashes with an ICS p6200 will cause the brickbug, this will allow me to do much more than rooting with my device. Many thanks for clearing that up and for the news/thread about the brickbug (I definitely will look into that) .

It certainly was a long wait for ICS, I guess stock JB will take just as long (maybe even longer because of the galaxy tab2). I will try flashing JB/CM10 but I better familiarize myself with linux commands and android in general first, just in case I will need to fix something.

I highly doubt we will ever see stock jb... You don't really need to know Linux c though, it helps, but not necessary. I'm running aorth's jb on my tab and honestly it's probably better than anything that Samsung could put out. I've always been a fan of aosp, and cm will be the closest we will get to that.

[Q] How to install CM10 in Atrix 2

Hi I'm new here, matter of fact this is my very first post on XDA! I am clueless when it comes to rooting and installing custom roms, never done it before but I'm willing to try. My question is how do I install CM10 on my Atrix 2 MB865 model phone?, it's currently running the latest 4.0.4 and I'm anxious to try out the newest features on 4.1.1 especially Google Now. With that said is there anyone who can guide me in the right direction? Is rooting necessary to install CM10? How do I backup my data including settings, apps and personal data like pictures and videos? What is the risk to benefit ratio as I've heard phones bricking. Thanks

First you would have to root your phone. You can learn it from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1742879. Then you would have to install the bootstrap app from google play and install the hijacks. After that you can boot in to bootstrap recovery via the app and from there you can flash cm10. You can backup your apps with titaniumbackup also from google play after you have rooted and you can just simply backup your pictures and videos on your pc. Before flashing make sure your read through the OP of the cm10 and make a nandroid backup before flashing it. If you follow all of the steps correctly theres a very small chance of bricking your phone. I've been running cm10 for two weeks and its AWESOME!!! Its up to you if you want to risk flashing it

Also, questions belong in Q&A, not General. I don't know why it's so hard to grasp that concept...
Why do I need to backup with Titanium if I can do it with CWM? From my understanding since Atrix 2 doesn't have an unlocked bootloader, we can't flash ROM's from the stock recovery?, and that we have to install bootstrap in order to get access to CWM recovery which then will allow me to flash the ROM?

Check the Atrix 2 development section for ROMs for this phone. Never use another "device specific ROM". If you want to use the ICS ROMs, you'll need to be on ICS with a custom recovery before flashing.
If you're not completely anal about having a 100% working ROM, I'd recommend trying cm10 or Paranoid Android.
If you are however you should check out StockyEd, Numa, and SwiftyTrix. SCv7 is cool too, but it all depends on what you prefer.

Cm10 is ICS based mate. You HAVE to be on ICS before installing cm10 or any other ICS based Rom.
Read the noob guide in the general section. That will help you with FAQ'S. Also, it's not possible that you were on 2.3.4 before the flash. The a2 came out of the box on 2.3.5.

Thats bad advice. Never flash something with a low battery. Charge it up first. IDK if you can charge in the state its in, might have to figure something out.

This method may be considered dangerous, and quite possibly is if you're not careful. But, you can flash via RSD Lite the appropriate FXZ to the device -assuming it's not hard bricked...

Yea, there's always that route.Last resort IMO, but I've had to do that on some device I had.
Another phone, desktop charger would be ideal, but not always possible.
Good fun when you get to that point

So i take it this phone does follow the rest in charging ways, like no charging in recovery, fastboot, or if soft bricked?

Actually our CM10 is not fully JB.... we have had to change all the code to work with our Stock ICS base and kernel. And yes we will not be getting Jelly Bean at all, Motorola has already said that and is offering the 100 dollar card to "upgrade" to phone that will get it.
Yes, again we had to be creative to make CM10 with our ICS base ROM, and Kernel... And yes there are many parts, especially libs and kernel modules, as well as some apps and framework that had to come from our stock ICS ROM and we had to compile it all against our stock ICS kernel.
So yes we have Jelly Bean and the things that go with it, but we do not have any of the kernel and some other upgrades that come with a "true" Jelly Bean install.

More props to those of you that work with this device. I knew it would have to be some work, but seeing it broken down opens the eyes.
Many thanks
Found this thread with a "last resort" method and had nothing to lose tried it and it worked. I also found that you didn't need to put the battery in while doing this, but kinda wore my hand out holding the phone so the wires wouldn't move. Thank you very much for this McGyver fix won't forget it.

Do we really need forum here?

Guys wat is this...????for discussing official updates and stocks things do we really need a forum for us????
Wat crappy locks will this phone has and let we break those bricks first then will build all....
Things that developed for xperia L so far....
No proper Cwm recovery like other phones
No proper tweaked custom rom
No cm roms
No easy flushable mods
Only experts will use customization and if other tries will landup in bootloader or some error which is because of we didn't have basic things for customization properly...
Still people are fighting for official updates and scolding Sony...
Come on guys we really have to work hard to get things....
Please devs working on this try to get the basic things first because only experts can flash and install things now and that is the situation here...
We need proper Cwm recovery and nandroid backup, flash method first (should be simple like on other phones)
Guys this is my suggestion and I worked hard and got basic things to work properly for grand quattro and those guys are enjoying my roms and ports, tweaks etc which is lack here since so many months....so considering basic things first will improve the development of Xl otherwise we will stuck here itself...
So please discuss the flaws so far wat we have and how to get those...
This thread is for guys who really put their ideas forward for development on xperia L...thanks for reading this and dont just read this.

Guys please don't make this thread to die and everybody should post their ideas here....and all words are important here and now for development of Xl....
Leave on begging for 4.3 updates and make it beautiful on wat we have...thus is wat every phone users are doing there and lacks here.

From what i read,we need proper kernel for CM.Now devs wait for sony to release 4.2 kernel sources and then they will port it to CAF base kernel. After that we will have CM and all the development will start, like porting miui and ubuntu touch.
Don't know what you mean for CWM and what expert things are needed to flash some .zip's,but I'm using vengeance kernel and all work correct. If you mean CWM for locket bootloader, then you need to know that they try to make it,but there is an bug in kernel and CWM is unusable for LB.

Is that custom recovery fully working like nandroid backup etc?
Is there any way that I can flash Cwm recovery easily after I unlock the bootloader...No this is wat we have to concentrate....people who are new to Sony will always brick their phones on flashing these due to complicate procedure...so first it should made easy for every one.

Don't know for nandroid backup (but I'm sure its working),will test it for you tonight and report.
Sony phones don't have stock recovery and we need to include it in kernel ramdisk(or for LB in system). So all the custom kernels got CWM recovery buildin. And on your question "Yes" after you unlock your phone you just need to download custom kernel that you like and flash it on your phone. Then when the phone start you only need to press volume down key and you will go to CWM(you know what to do after that ).
How i see you are new to sony,so i will tell you how to flash a custom kernel.
You got two ways:
Manual with fastboot
And Flashtool(recommended for new users)
First way you will need fastboot drivers(there are some .zip's that include only fastboot drivers other way is to install all the SDK)
On windows you will need to open command prompt and need to navigate to fastboot drivers, like "cd C:\fastboot".You will need to paste boot.img in the folder with the drivers (C:\fastboot).Then you only need to tipe in command prompt this "fastboot flash boot boot.img" and in 2-3 seconds flash will finish.
Second way with flashtool is simpler and for that i recommend it.
Download and install flashtool, then go to C:\Flashtool\Drivert and install drivers that you need(if you dont have them). After that just open flashtool, click on the "thunder" icon and chose "Fastboot mode".Then click on "Select kernel to flash" find your kernel and click "ok".After 2-3 seconds you will see the log that tells you flash was Successful.

I think that this is against the XDA rules...
At least research a little before you start posting such rants. We do not have the level of devs that can produce the stuff on their own(like S2's devs wrote drivers from scratch after Samsung denied to go open source with Exynos), I didn't expect anything when buying Xperia L, I've been in big communities like Galaxy S2, owned it for a year. And we bought Sony's phone, we have to be reliant on them to provide sources, 4.2.2's first build is just out, I don't think Sony will release kernel sources until they release a bug-free build, and the Devs who're up for CM wouldn't want to develop CM10 just to please you for a week or two then start CM10.1 when Sony releases kernel sources.
And it's not hard to unlock a bootloader and install Kernels. This is my first sony device, I know how easy it is in Samsungs, and Samsung attracts a lot of customers in India, more than Sony, so the development has to be more, you can't compare the development of two devices. This is just a pathetic thread. It just shows that you *expect* the devs here to work for said phone, let me tell you, this is a free society, it's upto devs whether they want to work or not.
We have forums because there were numerous requests in the new forum for device thread (Or whatever it is called). You bought the phone, that is it. It isn't the responsibility of the devs here to provide you with the goods you want to see.
And please, write in proper coherent English, it's flashing not flushing. Sony's all devices have locked bootloader, should've researched before buying.

Then why don't you develop something. Stop complaining and do something. It will make us and you happy.
Btw. we have fully working CWM and custom rom. Don't get what is your problem.
Complaining and whining about what your phone does or does not do is NOT WHAT XDA IS ABOUT.
Good advise has been given.

[Solved] Is it safe to update Atrix 2 (Asia version) to Jelly Bean

Hello Experts,
This is sktneer from India. I am Forum Guru in reputed ExcelForum (excelforumdotcom).
But I do not know anything about the back end applications used in phones except the basic functionality of my phone, currently using Motorola Atrix 2 MB865 (Asia version).
I would request you experts to guide and assist me to resolve the issues I am having with my phone.
My phone is very slow and I have tried almost all the methods I found over internet to get rid of this but all my efforts have gone in vain.
Recently over internet I found that some users having the same problem claimed that their issue was resolved by updating their Atrix 2 to Jelly Bean with unofficial leak 3.
To be very frank, this was completely new thing to me and I was not even aware of the terminology used in this scenario.
My Questions:
1) Is rooting is required for this kind of updaing? If yes, please guide me that how can I root my device?
2) What are the correct steps for updating my device with such leaks? Because when I googled this I just found few links for downloading but as I told you that I am completely novice and not familiar with the terminology used, so couldn't get the correct steps to be followed.
3) My last question is, is it possible to install ICS back if I face issues with JB on my device?
I know that I have asked too much and certainly you experts don't expect a complete novice in the forum but I hope that you will bear with me.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It is absolutely safe to install jb leak on Indian atrix 2 (I am using the same on my phone)
Rooting is not required for this process.
Use this link for complete procedure
and this is the link for downloading jb leak 3
Use the jb leak 3 instead of stock rom (leak) that is given in that procedure

Thanks Sameer!
I really appreciate your help.
I visited the link you provided and one thing is not clear to me. Would you please guide me that how to follow that......
In the link OP stated something like this....
"Once the whole process is over, you'll get a little sign saying that it passed. This means that your ROM has been flashed. Note- do NOT remove your phone/ let your phone or computer switch off. You do not want to go there. Make sure everything has enough charge.
Now... This step is very important... Reeboot your phone and..... You're done! That's it! Your phone now runs official(kinda) Jelly Bean(4.1)!"
Does this mean that when the process of updating is finished, the phone will be switched off automatically and I will have to reboot the phone when it is still connected to the pc as I normally switch on my phone by pressing the power button?
I am sorry if I have asked something silly but I need your guidance.
Hi Sameer,
One more query. Do I need to remove my memory card and SIM before updating also?
Thanks.
Reporting back the progress:
So finally I have updated my device successfully and noticed some changes and I will need your approval whether these changes are normal or if not, how to correct them.
1) The model number of the phone is showing ME865 now instead of MB865 (my old mode before update). Is this correct?
2) The new android version is 4.1.2. Is this the correct version which belongs to leak3?
3) When I called first after updating, the call was not connected and I got a Chinese voice message.
4) I can still see Chinese language here and there, though I changed it to English.
Please let me know if I have done it correctly or do I need to follow some more steps to completely make it to function properly?
Somebody please reply.
All is correct, no Worries,

Thanks Sameer. You helped me a lot. I really appreciate that.
I have few more questions for you, please reply if you can....
1) The latest version of Jelly Bean is 4.3. So is it possible to update to the latest version?
2) Can I re-install the JB update using the same method again, if any issue with the device?
3) If I factory reset the device, will the android version be changed to ICS again?
Sorry for bothering you.
Thanks again for all your support.
1.Yes it is!
2. Yes you can!
3. No. Your phone will only stay at the rom you flashed.

If you have any link with clear instructions for how to update to 4.3, please share that link with me.
Thanks again.
In fact i have never flashed 4.3 before. But i had 4.2 & kk roms flashed succesfully, and i'm using KK(cm11) right now. You can search the Atrix2 Android Development section for some threads of instructions on how to flash a 4.3 rom.

Hi Ricokowalski,
Nothing is better if there is any possibility of using KK.
Do you have any link with clear instructions to a beginner for how to do that, keeping in mind that I have already used JB leak 3 using RSD Lite? I will appreciate any help in this regards.
Moreover why I see this line in your message "Sent from my MB865 using XDA Free mobile app" because after updating my device shows ME865 instead of MB865 but yours is still showing MB865?
Thanks once again for your reply.
Firstly you need to get your phone rooted. Then you have to install a cunstom recovery. Most roms support the BMM(Boot Menu Manager) custom recovery. You can also install multiple Roms by BMM.
If the BMM runs normally on yoir phone, i think it is possible to flash roms.
You can access the BMM instructions here↓
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=49231803
I think that should be enough for a beginner to use BMM fluently.
And about the device name, i think it is because the build.prop file changed because of the JB leak you flashed. So your device name is changed too.
However i have noticed that some Roms had stated that people should flash them on stock ICS rom and i wonder if it is also safe to flash on JB leak. Afterall, it is dangerous to flash a custom rom.

That some roms are, non kexec 4.2.2 roms only !! (These non kexec rom needs stock ICS rom as ur primary rom)
All kitkat roms are kexec roms which can be flashed with BMM whether you have jb leak installed or stock ICS installed as ur primary ROM (system 1)
And its not dangerous to flash a custom rom

Nice to see your reply Sameer.
I updated to the JB leak3 with the help of the link you provided and I really appreciate your help since a beginner like me could update using RSD Lite and the leak file without knowing abcd of the whole story.
I would really appreciate if you can provide any further assistance in order to update to kitkat using RSD Lite since I am aware of the process of update using this method.
So can I do the same to update to kitkat using the same method?
If so, can you please assist me in doing so.
As you know my device is now on JB leak 3, will I be able to continue from here to kitkat?
Any further help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

No Sameer. Probably you mistaken me. I know that there might be threads addressing the same issue, but being a novice I cannot decide myself that which one to follow and that's why I requested you to help me to decide about the right method since I trust you. As I am not still clear that is installing BMM necessary for updating to kitkat or can't it be done using RSD Lite as I previously did with JB leak 3?
And don't worry, you are not being rude at all as I can understand this because I am also a forum guru and I know the feeling when OP asks more and then either I don't have time to reply or I am not willing to reply. So never mind. I will try and see if I can find something useful myself.
Thanks for all your support so far. :good:
