[Q] How to install CM10 in Atrix 2 - Motorola Atrix 2

Hi I'm new here, matter of fact this is my very first post on XDA! I am clueless when it comes to rooting and installing custom roms, never done it before but I'm willing to try. My question is how do I install CM10 on my Atrix 2 MB865 model phone?, it's currently running the latest 4.0.4 and I'm anxious to try out the newest features on 4.1.1 especially Google Now. With that said is there anyone who can guide me in the right direction? Is rooting necessary to install CM10? How do I backup my data including settings, apps and personal data like pictures and videos? What is the risk to benefit ratio as I've heard phones bricking. Thanks

First you would have to root your phone. You can learn it from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1742879. Then you would have to install the bootstrap app from google play and install the hijacks. After that you can boot in to bootstrap recovery via the app and from there you can flash cm10. You can backup your apps with titaniumbackup also from google play after you have rooted and you can just simply backup your pictures and videos on your pc. Before flashing make sure your read through the OP of the cm10 and make a nandroid backup before flashing it. If you follow all of the steps correctly theres a very small chance of bricking your phone. I've been running cm10 for two weeks and its AWESOME!!! Its up to you if you want to risk flashing it

Hey first off the bitter truth.doesn't matter if this is your first post.SEARCH AND READ BEFORE POSTING.YOU'RE NOT THE FIRST ONE TO HAVE THE PARTICULAR DOUBT/PROBLEM.YOUR EXACT PROBLEM SOMEONE ALREADY HAD BEFORE AND THE SOLUTION IS OUT THERE.Atleast have that much courtesy. And i don't say that just to give you a hard time but you'll definitely gain some knowledge from what you read.there will be other users who would've had some other problem and that might come in handy to you at some point of time you aren't even aware of right now.
That having been said welcome to xda.
So most of the answers you're looking for lie here and here
And maybe i got you wrong but if you're just looking for google now, you can have that on you're ICS too.if interested look here and here.

tl:dr
Also, questions belong in Q&A, not General. I don't know why it's so hard to grasp that concept...

Why do I need to backup with Titanium if I can do it with CWM? From my understanding since Atrix 2 doesn't have an unlocked bootloader, we can't flash ROM's from the stock recovery?, and that we have to install bootstrap in order to get access to CWM recovery which then will allow me to flash the ROM?

Titanium backup is for apps. CWM backup doesn't do that! Ya,we are locked. u need cwm to flash ROMS. Some of em need bootmenu recovery, but cm10 is to be flashed in cwm.

Check the Atrix 2 development section for ROMs for this phone. Never use another "device specific ROM". If you want to use the ICS ROMs, you'll need to be on ICS with a custom recovery before flashing.
If you're not completely anal about having a 100% working ROM, I'd recommend trying cm10 or Paranoid Android.
If you are however you should check out StockyEd, Numa, and SwiftyTrix. SCv7 is cool too, but it all depends on what you prefer.

Need Help with Rooting

Hi I have read everything I can possibly think of to root my G2X. I bought it a month ago and it came with 2.3.3 software. I have been jail breaking Iphones for years but this G2X has me lost. I just cant seem to get it and need help. I dont want to run any customs roms or such just want supper user privileges. If anyone has the time to help I would appreciate it. I tried to root via Z4 GingerBreak ETC. I tried supper one click and have got no were. Anyways Thanks for every ones time
Why couldn't you use one-click? There's nothing to it. It's completely automated.

Super oneclick doesn't work on 2.3.3.
Follow the links in my signature for rooting the G2x. Start with the clickworkmod recovery (does NOT require root first) then follow the instructions for rooting. Only took me a couple of minutes...and i'm an idiot, lol.
I feel toatly retarded cause I don't get the clockworks part. LOL why can't this be a simple one click. I'm going to try and follow your sig links and see were I get LOL

Did you root via oneclick? If so how?
This is what I did.
Not exactly one click but it worked for me. Plus cyanogen is a pretty respected source. Good luck. Also try Tsugi's custom rom for the g2x. Its actually not really custom. It is stock 2.3.4 gingerbread that was released for the European version of this phone. Its incredibly stable and lightning fast. Enjoy!!!

First you need to dl the rom you want to your phone (look for ones that are pre-rooted i believe they all are it should say if it is). Then you need to do nv flash recovery. After this you enter recovery and perform your back up and then follow the steps to flashing the rom you chose. Go to the forum the look for the guide to flash nv flash shouldn't to difficult just follow every step and your should be good
There is a new exploit that works on 2.3.3 and 2.3.4. Super One Click has been updated to include the new exploit. Search for it and download it to root phone without needing to flash Clockworkmod Recovery.

Hi all,
I am new to this community and new to smartphone.Very recently i got Inspire 4g with android version 2.3.3.I am very much interested in updating it to ICS.But from internet sources i have heard that HTC will most probably not give updates to Inspire 4g.So,the only option left to me is rooting. So,can someone kindly suggest me actually how to root my android device to ICS from scratch.I know nothing regarding rooting except that rooting gives administrator privileges.
Any help is appreciated,
Thanks in advance!!
First, you don't root to ics. Second, try actually looking in the development section

Inspire will NOT get an ICS rom officially. You can only run roms after rooting. HTC is not releasing an ics update for our phones, the desirehd will get one but you can only take advantage of that if you are rooted. and as mentioned please do a bit more searching, as all of your questions have been asked many times.
Another thing to keep in mind before flashing/installing an ICS rom, there is not a single ICS rom that is fully functional at the moment. With most of the ICS roms besides small bugs here and there (that is if they still have any) either the camera or videocamara or both do not work and will not work until the dhd gets the update. Most of the roms in the dhd forum will work with the inspire.
As i ha already been mentioned, read and rea some more. You'll find a lot of nice "toys" to play with.

Just like the 2 members said ics has some bugs I used it from some other devs and from having a good cam and video to work was important to me and yes you can use 3 rd party but was not all that good.
Also understand the importance of backups this is some info I posted else where but its nothing special may help or so...
No need to say sorry lol...your ok just hate so the new ones get cyber yelled at by some mod and close your thread and not getting your answer.
But even though it maybe not be for the rom that your running but also check out the Q&As of those Roms.
And also I know the htc inspire thread for ROMs is always on top of the game here but just letting you know as well Desire HD forums is I would say you should go for the most recent ROMs and updates etc.. And yes Desire HD can be used for the Htc Inspire so thats where Im at for the most part..
But if you ever get a boot loop form a rom you flash make sure you fully wipe (sorry just funny every time.you will see what I mean) from rom to rom unless other wise...If you still happen to have the PD98IMG file still on your sd card happens when you 1st root and for get that its there delete I use Es File Explorer to find whats on the sd card there are others astro file manager. Also This happen to me once when I flash scripts, gps fix, kernels then the rom that I was going to use and it just totally F'd my phone or re boots random or just gets stuck on the htc screen..
But I had made this post for another user (new) maybe this may help:
So this is an idea of what I do when I flash a rom and some other ideas/tips.
Getting Started or Flashing A Rom:
Once you root your phone (this is not in any order really) you should get ROM Manager aka Clock Work Mod. Once you get that, open the CWM and the first top half you will see flash clockworkmod recovery make sure your on wifi I would at least for the updates. You will see a dialog box click desire hd. This will allow you to make back ups of your settings that you made when you flash a rom its always a good idea to make your backups its a life save!! So, once you made your back up and this is what I do.. I plug in my phone to the pc switch to disk mode which will let you see whats on your sd card. Since you flash the CWM and recovery you will see on your sd card a folder called clockworkmod open then backups folder you will see you back that you made, drag and drop that backup file that you made to your fold that you made on pc to save it for later. And thats pretty much how I save my backups of roms etc.. Now if you need to load that back up just plug phone in disk mode cwm fold>backup drag and drop back up that you need. And boot into recovery mode and select back up and restore and select restore and the file boot and your good..
I would download which Rom I would like to use. Save it to pc to a folder that I have made that I store all my roms, backups, radios & rils, kernels..etc.. just to keep myself organized. Once you get your rom just drag and drop it to the ROOT of the sd card do NOT add it in any folder thats on the sd card. Once you have it on the card just boot into recovery flash your rom.. Other then that its easy to flash the rom.. And when you get all your settings set up make a back up and when done save it to the pc and delete it from the sd card if you dont want to keep on the card I do that..
When it comes to battery life it depends on what the rom.. But I like to use killers http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...ht=killersolth scripts for the kernels.. For me I always flash a different kernel upon flashing a new rom. For me having the kernel and killers script is the best combo for me to have for performance and battery life.. now since I have inspire I use the uv lites scripts.
For the most part flashing radios & Rils you would never really need to do that so I wouldnt recommend it for now maybe later but read about it its good to know what it does..
Other sides which I for got to add.. When you flash a new rom its always good to wipe user data.,cache, delvik it makes it for a good clean install with other roms..
Also the desire HD thread which the inspire can use the roms from that thread to.
Well I hope this helps you in any way.. if you need help PM me best of luck
SORRY FOR SUCH A LONG POST HAHA
Sooooooooo if you had ?s about Roms or Scripts,GPS not locking on after rom flashing,KERNELS (are my fav) let me know PM me

With some valuable suggestions i have downloaded ICS ROM from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1450962
and a stock ROM from here http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-inspire-4g-att/software-updates
So,i have a doubt now.In case if i screw up something while rooting can i go to stock(right now i have 2.3.3) and which is the better ICS ROM available for Inspire 4g for a starter like me without any bugs.
Any help is appreciated,
Thanks in advance!!
Well once you root your phone its rooted just can't add a stock Rom to it to make it stock. There is thread in the inspire forum called returning to stock or something like that like as in stock out of the box the members name is genepool I think I had to use that to unroot ny friends phone it was very easy ... So keep in mind that you need to unroot to go back to out of the box stock Rom.
As you may know as my other post always make a recovery of what you have on your phone just in case.
Sandy I also messaged you about your ?s to the ICS roms

your best bet (imo) would be to check out the ace hack root kit...and read that thing repeatedly...that's what I used to root mine...as for roms go...every ics rom as stated before has some sort of bugs or errors...you will just have to try some that you like the best.....keep in mind to ALWAYS backup...backup...and backup again to be sure in case you jack something up...this site has TONS of info if you search for it..lol
Thanks all for your replies.

There are a few good ics roms, but none will be rock solid until its released officially to the DHD. Then we can have some goodness here on the inspire. The few that are out there are solid enough for now.
Welcome to xda, big rule is to learn to search. That question could have been answered very quickly by searching. I won't give you the names of the Ics roms out currently for that same reason. Search and ye shall find.

My friend so will all the replies and input I would say find what rom you like or seems very popular so if you need anything you know that thread is "alive", root your phone, backup, and flash the rom that you pick out. Once you do that go through all the set up.. and take that backup and save it to your pc(thats what I do) not to throw you off track here but there is kernels that will help out battery life like I stated in one of post. I would also look into kernels, which kernels are very easy to flash and scripts to match with the kernel but I think your ready

Ok, if you want to revert to stock and S-ON use Gene´s Method. Put the file (named PD98IMG.zip) in the root of the sdcard and the boot in hboot.
Never flash a froyo RUU if your phone is running GB. You will mess the bootloader. DON´T USE YOUTUBE TUTORIALS, just do the homework and read.
Have in mind that if you mess your phone no one but you will care. You can also use the last version of the Hack Kit to revert to stock and S-ON....

Welcome to the wonderful world of Android customization! To answer your question, yes you do need to have root access to install custom roms. It's not very hard though, you just have to follow directions precisely. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1785999 This like is the 1 stop for all your Skyrocket needs. There are links for everything from roms to guides on how to root and everything in between. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1773659 I would use this method to root. It all might seem a little daunting at first, but once you get the hang of it it's a piece of cake, and you'll be flashing out the yin-yang. read my previous post, you DO NOT need root, he could if he wants too but installing/flashing any roms would wipe out any rooting previously done, rooting is only necessary for stock roms so u can remove bloat and/or modify system files on stock firmware

Nope, don't need root.

lol you just beat me to the punch vincom and I linked to your stuff anyway. They are the best resources after all. Anyways, I didn't realize you don't need root to flash roms. That is pretty cool. I would however recommend that you root anyway. You have access to SO much more customization. Root access is needed to use a bunch of really cool apps like Titanium Backup, and this app is arguably worth rooting alone. Just my 2 cents.

yes but only if u plan on staying w/stock firmware, all custom roms are already rooted, no previous/further rooting is needed unless dev of rom states to root after installing his rom, . op was asking about custom roms

Ahh I see. I thought you meant he could flash a custom rom but wouldn't have root. I just rooted first and didn't realize that flashing a custom rom itself gave you root.
Hey Vin, while we're at it... If you are on a stock rom, can you load goo manager and install twrp from there?

same answer applies, if on stock and you need to alter system files, like stock recovery, you would need to root the phone, which you would first install cwm/twrp w/odin, then flash the root files(su), then goomanager can do its thing, but u already have twrp installed, so the only benefit would be in goomanager is that u can update twrp and/or if you initially flashed cwm w/odin then you can change it to twrp through goomanager

would you please let me know what to do? It reboots and dosent look stable for me.
Regards
That's because that is not the latest version. Where did you get it? It is actually really old. The latest version is on this phone's development forum. Usually I would tell you to read more and search for the link, but I'm feeling nice today. So I'll give you the link here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1460820. And I'll give you a friendly warning: around here and around most Android hacking forums, we expect even new users to read and research a lot for themselves instead of flashing things willy-nilly. Look to the link in my signature for some new user help. And remember to full wipe.
Also, I4G users can flash Desire HD ROMs. So you can try that forum out too. It's more active than this one.
I got it from google. and would you please let me know what to do? Can you give me the link of latest rom of ICS 4.0.4 link which will work on Inspire 4G and how can i root this 4G now? because i cant install your rom without Rooting.
Thanks

Well, you haven't answered the question of how it got unrooted. Not knowing how that happened, I don't know which of several solutions will work. For the rest read my edited post above. And look generally to the I4G and DHD Development forums for ROMs. Don't randomly flash stuff from Google. You run a pretty high risk of bricking your phone.
Hi bro, Thanks alot for your time, i am downloading this aospX-1.0.0-MR1-DHD.zip rom right now. and I just checked my iphone and i can see the recovery mode after rebooting my phone. but when i install root check app and it says your phone is not rooted. so any Idea what to do?

Er, your iPhone? Do you mean your DHD? You probably got your Superuser app deleted somehow from your current ROM, I don't know how, but once the ROM is flashed Superuser should be back, since the ROM will have it. Make sure you full wipe first, which means wiping or reformatting system, data, and cache (the exact method differs depending on your recovery). This will erase any data you have.
Also, did you use AAHK S-Off or HTCDEV bootloader unlock? The flashing method differs. And by the way, calling either option "root" is a misnomer. AAHK S-Off lets you flash anything to your phone. HTCDEV bootloader unlock lets you flash certain custom ROMs. They basically unlock hardware. Root is software. It usually comes with a ROM, though you could push the relevant Superuser.apk and su binary from your computer with adb if you really wanted to do so. You just can't flash a ROM (and usually people are looking to flash rooted ROMs) unless you have unlocked hardware with AAHK or HTCDEV. Look at the link in my signature, which has a very good guide on post #7, for more detailed information that you should probably know before you go mess with your device any further.
Yah Sir, my Inspire 4G had 2.3.3 as you know that and i did use AAHK to unlock bootloader before flashing 4.0.4. and as i said earlier i am using it now but rebooting. I do understand my questions frustrate you because i am noob.
What i am trying to ask you now that the link you have given me the latest rom one, Can i flash this one straight away after downloading because i have used AAHK before installing 4.0.4?

It should be rooted. Do you have an app called Superuser or SuperSU? And yes, you can install paid apps on any ROM, rooted or not.
yes bro, I can see the app called Superuser in Inspire 4G now. So its mean i can install paid apps for free now?

...Um, no. Paid apps are still paid. That doesn't change with root. And XDA does not condone pirating. I meant that you could install paid apps in a rooted ROM just like you can on stock.
When you jailbreak an iPhone, you can get paid apps for free..that's probably what he meant or was curious to know

Well, he can pirate apps on Android all he wants regardless of whether he's rooted or not. Whether he should is a whole other question.
Well, I am agreed with MissB. Rooting the phone goes far beyond hacking 5 bucks apps. If the only reason is that he wants to pirate apps, then he is in the wrong place.
Besides, he needs to read a bit more before messing or infect with a virus his phone. Most of the apps have a lite version that is as good as the paid one with a little restraint on the features.
I reinstalled cm-7.2.0-ace.zip because ICS was a bit laggy and wasnt working fast. So i downloaded cm-7.2.0-ace.zip this rom and installed but I dont have Martket or google play icon in this rom. would you please let me know how to download and from where i can get it.

[Solved] Is it safe to update Atrix 2 (Asia version) to Jelly Bean

Hello Experts,
This is sktneer from India. I am Forum Guru in reputed ExcelForum (excelforumdotcom).
But I do not know anything about the back end applications used in phones except the basic functionality of my phone, currently using Motorola Atrix 2 MB865 (Asia version).
I would request you experts to guide and assist me to resolve the issues I am having with my phone.
My phone is very slow and I have tried almost all the methods I found over internet to get rid of this but all my efforts have gone in vain.
Recently over internet I found that some users having the same problem claimed that their issue was resolved by updating their Atrix 2 to Jelly Bean with unofficial leak 3.
To be very frank, this was completely new thing to me and I was not even aware of the terminology used in this scenario.
My Questions:
1) Is rooting is required for this kind of updaing? If yes, please guide me that how can I root my device?
2) What are the correct steps for updating my device with such leaks? Because when I googled this I just found few links for downloading but as I told you that I am completely novice and not familiar with the terminology used, so couldn't get the correct steps to be followed.
3) My last question is, is it possible to install ICS back if I face issues with JB on my device?
I know that I have asked too much and certainly you experts don't expect a complete novice in the forum but I hope that you will bear with me.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It is absolutely safe to install jb leak on Indian atrix 2 (I am using the same on my phone)
Rooting is not required for this process.
Use this link for complete procedure
and this is the link for downloading jb leak 3
Use the jb leak 3 instead of stock rom (leak) that is given in that procedure

Thanks Sameer!
I really appreciate your help.
I visited the link you provided and one thing is not clear to me. Would you please guide me that how to follow that......
In the link OP stated something like this....
"Once the whole process is over, you'll get a little sign saying that it passed. This means that your ROM has been flashed. Note- do NOT remove your phone/ let your phone or computer switch off. You do not want to go there. Make sure everything has enough charge.
Now... This step is very important... Reeboot your phone and..... You're done! That's it! Your phone now runs official(kinda) Jelly Bean(4.1)!"
Does this mean that when the process of updating is finished, the phone will be switched off automatically and I will have to reboot the phone when it is still connected to the pc as I normally switch on my phone by pressing the power button?
I am sorry if I have asked something silly but I need your guidance.
Hi Sameer,
One more query. Do I need to remove my memory card and SIM before updating also?
Thanks.
Reporting back the progress:
So finally I have updated my device successfully and noticed some changes and I will need your approval whether these changes are normal or if not, how to correct them.
1) The model number of the phone is showing ME865 now instead of MB865 (my old mode before update). Is this correct?
2) The new android version is 4.1.2. Is this the correct version which belongs to leak3?
3) When I called first after updating, the call was not connected and I got a Chinese voice message.
4) I can still see Chinese language here and there, though I changed it to English.
Please let me know if I have done it correctly or do I need to follow some more steps to completely make it to function properly?
Somebody please reply.
All is correct, no Worries,

Thanks Sameer. You helped me a lot. I really appreciate that.
I have few more questions for you, please reply if you can....
1) The latest version of Jelly Bean is 4.3. So is it possible to update to the latest version?
2) Can I re-install the JB update using the same method again, if any issue with the device?
3) If I factory reset the device, will the android version be changed to ICS again?
Sorry for bothering you.
Thanks again for all your support.
1.Yes it is!
2. Yes you can!
3. No. Your phone will only stay at the rom you flashed.

Thank you so much for your reply.
If you have any link with clear instructions for how to update to 4.3, please share that link with me.
Thanks again.
In fact i have never flashed 4.3 before. But i had 4.2 & kk roms flashed succesfully, and i'm using KK(cm11) right now. You can search the Atrix2 Android Development section for some threads of instructions on how to flash a 4.3 rom.

Hi Ricokowalski,
Nothing is better if there is any possibility of using KK.
Do you have any link with clear instructions to a beginner for how to do that, keeping in mind that I have already used JB leak 3 using RSD Lite? I will appreciate any help in this regards.
Moreover why I see this line in your message "Sent from my MB865 using XDA Free mobile app" because after updating my device shows ME865 instead of MB865 but yours is still showing MB865?
Thanks once again for your reply.
Firstly you need to get your phone rooted. Then you have to install a cunstom recovery. Most roms support the BMM(Boot Menu Manager) custom recovery. You can also install multiple Roms by BMM.
If the BMM runs normally on yoir phone, i think it is possible to flash roms.
You can access the BMM instructions here↓
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=49231803
I think that should be enough for a beginner to use BMM fluently.
And about the device name, i think it is because the build.prop file changed because of the JB leak you flashed. So your device name is changed too.
However i have noticed that some Roms had stated that people should flash them on stock ICS rom and i wonder if it is also safe to flash on JB leak. Afterall, it is dangerous to flash a custom rom.

That some roms are, non kexec 4.2.2 roms only !! (These non kexec rom needs stock ICS rom as ur primary rom)
All kitkat roms are kexec roms which can be flashed with BMM whether you have jb leak installed or stock ICS installed as ur primary ROM (system 1)
And its not dangerous to flash a custom rom

Nice to see your reply Sameer.
I updated to the JB leak3 with the help of the link you provided and I really appreciate your help since a beginner like me could update using RSD Lite and the leak file without knowing abcd of the whole story.
I would really appreciate if you can provide any further assistance in order to update to kitkat using RSD Lite since I am aware of the process of update using this method.
So can I do the same to update to kitkat using the same method?
If so, can you please assist me in doing so.
As you know my device is now on JB leak 3, will I be able to continue from here to kitkat?
Any further help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

No Sameer. Probably you mistaken me. I know that there might be threads addressing the same issue, but being a novice I cannot decide myself that which one to follow and that's why I requested you to help me to decide about the right method since I trust you. As I am not still clear that is installing BMM necessary for updating to kitkat or can't it be done using RSD Lite as I previously did with JB leak 3?
And don't worry, you are not being rude at all as I can understand this because I am also a forum guru and I know the feeling when OP asks more and then either I don't have time to reply or I am not willing to reply. So never mind. I will try and see if I can find something useful myself.
