Hello All! I have a quick question. It's about clockworkmod and wiping.
In the Wipe Menu in Recovery here are these options:
- rom
- cache
- dalvik
- cache/ dalvik
- data
Can someone tell what happens when each of these are "Wiped" ?
I'm currently using a Samsung Galaxy Exhibit 4G which is rooted and cmw-based recovery v6.0.1.2
I'd really appreciate if you guys can help me.

1.Rom? no option for that
2.Cache-it will wipe of all useless data in your phone
3.Dalvik-Very important . to avoid a hundred issues before installing a mod/rom
4.Cache/Dalvik-same as 3
5.Data- You will lose all your apps, settings, some mods.
your rom will be fresh again and it can avoid minor problems.
what i did was wipe cache and dalvik if update rom / kernel
wipe cache, dalvik, and data if install new rom.

Even though I never wiped cache and dalvik to install a new kernel, yes, you are correct, it is better to do these before installing new kernel, For installing a new ROM, wipe cache, dalvik and data but make sure, you back up your data first.
I may not suggest to wipe data for updates, but it may be necessary in flashing new roms.zip.............

the rom I am trying is NoSense Rom
You probably didn't do a full wipe. You need to format the data, cache, dalvik cache and system. Everything but the SDcard.

how much wiping is necessary on the nexus s when flashing roms and kernels? i've had a habit of wiping data/cache/dalvik 3 times each from my epic days when it only had a broken clockwork recovery to work with. is that a recommended procedure?
i also see that when you select wipe data/factory data reset in clockwork, it wipes cache. does this make the wiping cache step unnecessary when installing a new rom?
one last thing. . . every time i wipe dalvik cache the prompt delivers an error. is this normal? is anything actually being wiped?
thanks in advance for your help

Use dalvik-wiper.zip from morfic to wipe the dalvik on your Nexus S.
Steps to flash a rom, kernel:
wipe cache
wipe dalvik using dalvik-wiper.zip
flash rom/kernel
fix permissions
If you're having any issue, boot loops, wipe data.
wow i can't believe i went this whole time without ever actually wiping the dalvik. . . heh
thank you! armed with this info i couldn't resist the itch to do a clean install of my favorite rom/kernel
hi,
i just rooted my mz601 3.2 and i want to install the ics everest.
can someone please let me know how i can wipe the xoom prior the ics flash?
i have cwm recovery installed .
many thanks!!
Boot into recovery you'll find a list of options there. It would also be a good idea to read "Xoom Heaven" posted in the general section first.
Your going to have to Wipe Data and factory Reset, Wipe Cache partition than scroll to advanced and Wipe the Dalvik Cache. After that go to Install zip from SD card.
thanks Guys,
i manage to install the Ics and everything is fine.
what cache / data do i need to wipe when i will flash an updated ics rom?
do i stiil need to wipe all of the above and loose my aps and data again?
thanks!!
I Personally like to do the full wipe thing, just as you did before. Because that's one less thing you don't have to consider when having problems.
Is this really necessary to wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache and also fix permissions when coming from Ressurection Remix ICS ROM? What difference does it makes if I dont?

If the instructions say so, then it's best to do it. If you don't, you may end up in a bootloop or the rom may just not boot.
Hello,
I've been thoroughly reading remICS-JB rom post and I don't totally understand which is the best way to update from one remiICS-JB build to another.
Is there a way to update the rom without having to factory reset/ wipe data? I was wondering if a simple wipe cache/ dalvik cache would do the trick but I'm not sure at all.
Thanks in advance.
