If the instructions say so, then it's best to do it. If you don't, you may end up in a bootloop or the rom may just not boot.

Hey guys.
As the title says, while im speaking on the phone the sound just stops working. I cant hear or be heard on the other line.
Any suggestions?
i have this issue too after flashing Revolution HD rom.
Help!
Using the same rom. Hmm wonder whats up cause the rom is sweet
any solution?
Have you guys cleared your cache and dalvik cache before installing the rom? If so then just try flashing the rom again over your build without wiping data and clear the cache and dalvik cache again before doing so.
I tried to install two different roms, even the stock rom, but the problem persists.
It just happened to me too .. And I am on stock rom, and stock recovery..

When i installed the rom i did the recommended route (i.e formating before rom installation).
Stigx noted it happend on stock so I wonder if its a radio issue?
how much wiping is necessary on the nexus s when flashing roms and kernels? i've had a habit of wiping data/cache/dalvik 3 times each from my epic days when it only had a broken clockwork recovery to work with. is that a recommended procedure?
i also see that when you select wipe data/factory data reset in clockwork, it wipes cache. does this make the wiping cache step unnecessary when installing a new rom?
one last thing. . . every time i wipe dalvik cache the prompt delivers an error. is this normal? is anything actually being wiped?
thanks in advance for your help

Use dalvik-wiper.zip from morfic to wipe the dalvik on your Nexus S.
Steps to flash a rom, kernel:
wipe cache
wipe dalvik using dalvik-wiper.zip
flash rom/kernel
fix permissions
If you're having any issue, boot loops, wipe data.
wow i can't believe i went this whole time without ever actually wiping the dalvik. . . heh
thank you! armed with this info i couldn't resist the itch to do a clean install of my favorite rom/kernel
When you have flashed a rom and there are Nightly'ish Builds that you would like to flash, do you still have to wipe data/factorty reset, wipe cache partiton and wipe dalvik cache?

Usually if you're staying within the same area (like CM10 nightly to another) you don't need to wipe data. Just cache and dalvik (also known as a dirty flash). However, this seems increase the chance of having problems so some people always do a full wipe just in case. You definitely need to do a full wipe going from JB to ICS, ICS to JB, etc.
With small changes yes, do devs always tell u when there are big changes, no. Also it seems like when you get around 3-4 dirty flashes things get wonky no matter what. Best most reliable experience is always clean. And remember if u flash dirty dont post bugs until u confirm on a clean flash.

battery cache
Is it a good idea to clear battery cache every once in awhile? What is the main purpose for this option?

Wiping battery stats is useless as stated by google developers. http://www.xda-developers.com/android/google-engineer-debunks-myth-wiping-battery-stats-does-not-improve-battery-life/
Thanks
Thank you very much for the helpful information Tonu42 and Zalithian!!
Hello All! I have a quick question. It's about clockworkmod and wiping.
In the Wipe Menu in Recovery here are these options:
- rom
- cache
- dalvik
- cache/ dalvik
- data
Can someone tell what happens when each of these are "Wiped" ?
I'm currently using a Samsung Galaxy Exhibit 4G which is rooted and cmw-based recovery v6.0.1.2
I'd really appreciate if you guys can help me.

1.Rom? no option for that
2.Cache-it will wipe of all useless data in your phone
3.Dalvik-Very important . to avoid a hundred issues before installing a mod/rom
4.Cache/Dalvik-same as 3
5.Data- You will lose all your apps, settings, some mods.
your rom will be fresh again and it can avoid minor problems.
what i did was wipe cache and dalvik if update rom / kernel
wipe cache, dalvik, and data if install new rom.

Even though I never wiped cache and dalvik to install a new kernel, yes, you are correct, it is better to do these before installing new kernel, For installing a new ROM, wipe cache, dalvik and data but make sure, you back up your data first.
I may not suggest to wipe data for updates, but it may be necessary in flashing new roms.zip.............

Hello,
I've been thoroughly reading remICS-JB rom post and I don't totally understand which is the best way to update from one remiICS-JB build to another.
Is there a way to update the rom without having to factory reset/ wipe data? I was wondering if a simple wipe cache/ dalvik cache would do the trick but I'm not sure at all.
Thanks in advance.
