I went to sleep Thursday night and the phone was working fine and had about 75% charge. Next day the battery was dead (and cold, so if it did that "burn up the battery thing" then it finished up many hours ago). When I managed to charge it up enough so that it would boot, it said that there was no SIM card installed. I was using a 5 month old Straight Talk Mobile SIM. I am NOT rooted and running the V21y release as pushed by LG.
I pulled the SIM and put my old T-Mobile SIM in. Still says "no SIM card", the exact same message as when I boot it up with no card at all. I have checked the IMEI and it looks correct (it's not all zeroes).
I've put my Straight Talk Mobile SIM into an old phone (Motozine ZN5) and it works; it even delivered a text message sent during the dead time. After doing that, I put the Straight Talk SIM back into my G2X and it still says No SIM card.
I have ordered a new battery (a $5 cheap one from Amazone) in the hopes that it will magically fix some problems, as folks have vaguely reported. I doubt it will fix my problem but, hey, $5 and we'll make sure.
I have done a factory reset (just the internal memory) and it did not fix the problem. I'm doing a restore right now but I don't hold out much hope. Does anyone have any other ideas? At this point I'm perfectly happy to root the thing or do anything to it, since it's not very useful if it won't connect to a network.
The only out of the ordinary thing that happened was that on Wednesday, I used the phone for turn-by-turn walking directions via Google Maps, with the GPS turned on. The GPS wasn't all that accurate but it managed to help me find the bus stop I was looking for. I had GPS on for maybe 20 minutes. At that time I had WiFi off (I think) and 4G on.
Thanks in advance for any advice. I'm also prepared for it to be "time to get a new phone"; my IMEI starts with 0125 so it's been a rocky ride.
No idea. Bump for curiosity. Hope u get it worked out.

Unfortunately jackyl has no idea.
Only other idea jackyl would have after a reset is plugging into PC, see if APX mode works to see if it didn't die.
You can have a dead battery and the phone should power up off the charger still.

Check the pins in the SIM card slot to see if one or more have broken off.

Haha jackyl in 3rd person.
Edit (in an attempt to be helpful rather than not): maybe give the sim a good wiggle to make sure it's seated properly? And yeah, checking the pins is also good. You know the sim works, but I'm wondering if the connection went bad on the board somehow. On a stock rom, I can't imagine the battery getting burnt up. I guess it's possible, and maybe that fried a component of the sim reader?

The phone appears to be fine, other than that it won't see any SIM cards. I've had each of my 3 cards in and out of it many times. All the pins look fresh and undamaged. (The take it out, blow on it, put it back in trick was the first thing I tried.)
I haven't done APX mode but my backup software (MobileGo) uses USB debugging mode to backup and restore. It was able to see the device and do a restore... hopefully that's similar?
It's possible that there was an overheat and it melted something I can't see inside the device. This is FAR from the first time I've had an overheat, though I would not think this one could be exceptionally bad since it wasn't plugged into anything at the time. It was just sitting on the desk.
Should I try opening the case and taking a look inside? I've never done that.
A symptom I forgot in my first post: it is now losing its date and time whenever I remove the battery, even just for a few seconds. (It believes it is December 31, 2006 at 7pm.) I do not remember it doing that before, even when I've booted it up without a SIM, though the last time I pulled the SIM was 5 months ago when I started with Straight Talk.

If you have had multiple overheats on a stock rom I would tend to think you have bad hardware. Can you get replacement phones on straight talk?.
As far as the date and time thing, with the battery pull that will happen. Its a symptom of pulling the battery while the phone is on. That's just a hypothesis though. I have no liknks to prove it.

This forum is for G2x which is entirely different from G2.
Same here! Sony Xperia C4 E5333
I tried everything! Factory reset; Xperia Companion that didn't work and kept crashing; I managed to fix that by accident once,
but I can't reproduce the fix

Hi Guys,
I've had the Att Galaxy S Captivate phone since December and it's been both a dream and nightmare. The phone is phenomenal when it's working but I've been having issues with them from the first phone.
Basically I've been through 4 yes 4 Captivates with the same issue. Let me first just say that I've kept them in pristine condition! The stupid things still have the original plastic on them! Either the phone is in my pocket or sitting on a table charging! None of them have ever seen the ground nor moisture of any kind including sweat!
The problem is basically this:
I'll be on a phone call or using the browser, then the phone will softly vibrate like I've provided a user input, the little bar will say External SD card removed. After that the screen will black out with the 4 soft keys still staying lit. Then the phone comes back up to it's lock screen and says Media Scanner running and it's an endless cycle after that.
Basically it's resetting but without the Galaxy S logo or the ATT logo in an endless cycle.
I read somewhere on
I don't have an SD card inserted nor do I have any suspicious applications. Hell the only things I have are Facebook, GasBuddy and Email synced.
I've done numerous hard resets, gotten a new sim card and 4 phones! Has anyone else had anything like this?
I take it your running the stock ROM?
In which case you have two options:
Get a new phone, or install a custom ROM.
Mikey's pretty much spot on with this one. Try a custom rom if you are stock. If not, go back to stock. Eliminate software as the cause first. If.it persists, new phone time.
Sent from my Oops it just shutdown again.
try removing your apps and see if it goes away, if it does put your apps back one at a time wait a few days to see if the problem returns between adding your apps if you get the problem without apps, do you have an external sd card if so, remove it and see if the problem returns, if it does, get a new phone.
csmeance,
Please reply if, and when, you solve the problem. I had virtually the same thing happen twice within 20 minutes, removed the battery and rebooted and haven't had it happen again.

I have the stock rom on the phone, no alterations what so ever! The only thing I've done in common on all 4 phones is sync my email and facebook.

I've only used factory software on the phone and done numerous hard resets with tech support, and in one instance is made the problem happen right after it turned on without any sort of reason!

Like I said, I have the factory ATT apps and then an updated facebook one. As well I have that gas buddy app which I got with my 3rd phone since a friend suggested I use it to save some money!
NO external SD card used at all, hell I haven't even plugged it into the computer for anything!

Multiple phones with a problem regarding external SD card makes me think something is wrong with your SD card, try formatting or a different card.

But I'm not putting in an SD card! Only thing that goes into the new phone is the battery and SIM chip!
Maybe it's referring to the internal SD card
Got a new phone from ATT so I'll wait and see what happens with this one...
are you using the stock samsung wall charger? Using chargers that provide less than 1000mA current make the phone think it's being used by a computer as a USB device. When the phone is removed from the charger, it then rescans the SD cards,etc...
Download RescanMedia, disable media scanning until you need to use it. FYI, you must have USB debugging enabled to use RescanMedia.
Maybe that will help you.
Umm well.. u're saying that u're syncing the Email on all 4..
If u're syncing to Exchange, maybe it propagates some kind of a "bad" certificate on your phone making it do silly things?
This has happened with 4 phones? Why don't you insert an sd card and see if that does it? Or go to settings and mount/unmount sd card?
Four phones with the same fault is highly suspicious. Focus on the things that are common to all phones. I would start with the sim

I already have gotten 2 new sim cards and am going to get another one today. I got the 5th one a few days ago and put the 2.2 update from Samsung and Att on it. Today the same thing is happening. I'm going to make a video of it and send it to att and samsung. This is getting ridiculous...
I'm using the stock charger and the ATT stuff only. I've noticed though with the 2.2 update, the phone will vibrate twice quickly, then once, then freeze and shut off and restart. With 2.1 on all the other phones, it would just restart without any sort of vibrate/tone.
Also this is with it off the charger and on the charger. It doesn't matter at all.
Just as an aftertought, the only thing that I have done in common is talked on the phone while it's been on the charger. When I do this the phone gets VERY hot and I end up using the speaker phone function. Is it normal to do this on the capitvate? I know my old Tilt 2 used to do the same.
Update: Called up ATT and they said to get another new sim, they think it might have been corrupted somehow with the captivate update. I'm going to grab a new one!
When they send you a new phone, do you get a new battery too? You said it gets really hot, maybe there's something wrong with that.

Hey guys.. So I've had my inspire for about 2 or 3 months now, and this thing is driving me apeshhh. Here is why...
For a few weeks now, the phone would randomly restart in the middle of doing something, always random. Sometimes while writing a msg in the stock facebook app. Sometimes when browsing market, sometimes when browsing using the web browser. Today I wanted to download Astro to see if the music I put on the phone went to external or internal SD. As soon as the download finished, the phone restarted. After it booted back up I looked through apps, and it never installed. I went back to market and searched it, pulled it up, and it shows installing.... let it sit for 5 minutes... nothing. Restarted, same thing. Pulled the battery... same thing... I can't cancel it, or try again. It will now no longer install anything else.
I figured maybe it needs to download something that it just doesn't have the network speed to use, and trying turning on wifi. IT WONT EVEN TURN ON. Under the settings menu to turn it on, it says error. When i tap on it, the error msg just goes off then comes back right away.
Anybody else experience this? I really wish SOMEBODY would come out with a decent f**king phone on the AT&T network.... I guess I can now add HTC to the list of people that can't build a decent phone. Just below Samsung... (What a POS line of phones they have released).
Anyway, phone is stock, not rooted, nothing turned off, completely stock.
How does the warrenty work now? I bought the phone outright, cash, $500... for this....
Thanks for any help.
Could be your phone mate. I've had this phone maybe about three months and haven't experienced those issues. Just might be a lemon you have. Where did you purchase the phone?

I bought the phone at an authorized AT&T retailer store. The kind you find in common shopping strips.
Try to see if they will give you a replacement

Back up your stuff and factory reset. If that doesn't work then either Root it and try a different ROM or get a replacement phone.
You might want to look at the thread in here about random shutdowns. It looks like the batteries on these phones can be the culprit. My phone randomly shutdown, sometimes restarted. I thought it was a ROM I had loaded at first. The problem got progressively worse no matter what ROM I used. It would do it maybe once a day & then within less than 3 weeks I have to keep it plugged in all the time. It happened when I opened a power-intensive app like navigation or a game. The battery is covered under warranty.
This issue seems to be rather uncommon, but it does exist.
Nothing compared to what Captivate owners went through.
Lemons do happen, but as suggested, I'd try another battery first. If that doesn't solve the problem, there shouldn't be any issue with getting a warranty replacement.
And that warranty replacement will, with near certainty, be a good one. Again, unlike the Captivate.
I've had mine for about 3 months with none of these issues. HTC phones for me have been great. Even their customer service and support if their products. And I have had Samsung, motorolla, and LG none at the same level of build quality. If you continue having problems get in touch with the HTC support they will help if not let u know if you can get a replacement.

I am a former captivate owner. That phone was so bad that it destroyed it's own internal memory. Every app continously force close, every process, upon startup one day. Restored a backup, got nothing, reflashed, got nothing, mounted it and formated it then ran a memory checking utility on my computer with it, and it showed like 46% of the sectors being bad, after then 2nd test somewhere in the high 50s. I promtly punched in the screen and folded the phone in half, and tore it into 2 pieces... So i think that may be why I'm relatively patient with this phone.. (that was also my 3rd captivate replacement). (Debating using a picture of the phone as-is in a DIY to fixing captivates and post it in that forum... get all your frustration out and buy a new phone.. ha ha.)
I will call HTC and see talk to a rep, maybe they know more about the problem and will be able to determine whether the phone or the battery is at fault.
Also, factory reset did not fix the wifi problem. Instead of immediately going back to error under it's status, and spent about 10 seconds trying to connect, then came up with error. This leads me to believe it's hardware related.
I will most likely push for a replacement phone then. I do have a concern with that though... My phone has never gotten wet, and only has a small indication of falling out of my pocket while sitting in a stadium chair (maybe a 12 inch drop onto concrete). Will this void my warrenty? The scar left behind is hardly noticeable, but if they looked for it, it will be seen. Another thing is, when I pull my battery cover off, there are 2 screws along the side, one is covered by a sticker that reads VOID, black sticker with white text. Is that some kind of indicator of water damage? I'm more familiar with white stickers turning red or pink from water damage... and as said, this phones never been wet.
Thanks again for the help.
At&t is usually good about replacing defective phones and will be faster than dealing with htc. You obviously have experience with at&t warranty having owned a captivate.

Those stickers are intact right? As long as their intact and not "punched in," which would indicate a screwdriver has penetrated in order to get the phone open, you should be good, as far as that's concerned.

I've posted this in the CM9 Alpha6 thread but didnt have any response so trying here since it may not be ROM related. I'm S-ON and have been running A6 for 5-6 weeks and besides the battery drain and random reboots it was ok. Two days ago I tried the WiFi tethering for the first time and it work well for a few hours. However, suddenly it rebooted 3 times in a loop and went dead after the last reboot. I tried all combinations of pressing buttons (power, hboot, recovery...) , replacing battery, charger and so on and it just doenst power up and doesnt show any ligths. Connected to the laptop it doenst see the phone since is not powered on. The battery doesn't look swollen or defective and it was fully charged when the phone went dead.
I went yesterday to the TMobile store and tried with a new battery and didnt do anything. Also tried different chargers and USB to laptop, nothing, no response.
Any ideas why the phone went dead? Is it definitely gone? Should i add it to the collection of paperweights?
Thanks a lot
Also, is there anyway to wipe the phone's data? TMobile told me i can get a replacement but im worried all my data is in the dead phone ill be sending back
In almost ALL circumstances if you can't get in, they can't either. At least until it's sent back and you already have your new phone. Then HTC doesn't really have the time OR inclination to do forensic system analysis of every phone and will just go about replacing its guts & sending it back out as a refurb.
It having been a commercial "semi-flop" I persoanlly believe they will be happy when they all die and we all shut the hell up about ICS & JB. LOL

I dont worry about TMo or HTC bringing ICS/JB for any of my devices, since that will mean again getting read of crapware, settings....personally i prefer any of the multiple ROMs and thats part of the Android beauty...
Now, since i got the replacement i have to worry about sending my old phone back and it ending up resold without being wiped....do you know any part of the phone where a screwdriver tip (or hammer) will ensure the phone memory is gone?
If you could get it to come back on even just to HBoot I could tell you how to fry it BUT it would just take it back to where it is right now but with the partition tables borked. I can understand your concerns but I honestly think you're worrying about something that won't happen. Even if they were to use the internal memory again (IF they could) they would do a partition repair & reformat before reinstalling the stock ROM. I would be concerned though about sending one back with physical damage. That COULD turn into a "GOTCHA". KWIM?
Judging by your description, I'd say your phone has a hardware problem. If no lights are coming on, and there's absolutely no response, it's either the motherboard or the display.
But nothing HTC can't handle. They should be able to fix it and send it back no problem. Very rarely will they send you a new phone. They always try to save the phone you send in.
For software, they can probably restore it using their factory special cable connection (forgot what it's called).
That being the case it would still be sent back out to someone else after the repairs. TMobile will send a replacement to a customer and the borked one is sent back to them in the same box the replacement came to you in. At least that's what's happened to everyone I know (including myself) that has gone thru TMobile instead of having to deal directly with HTC.
^^^^^^^^^^^^ +1 couldn't have said it better myself

I think you are right and there is some HW problem, I was wondering if it had to do with me having the WiFi tethering on since i just switched it on for the first time 3-4 before it went dead and the phone was hotter than usual. Maybe nothing to do but i thought it could be a possibility

Just as an update and to post my experience replacing the phone; since i had insurance, TMo sent me the a new phone ... in less than 24h !!!, seems if you report before 5pm you get the new phone in your hands the AM of the next business day, pretty good.
The phone came on a special package, with return labels, but without SIM, SD, battery or back cover, just the "carcass". Put the old phone sim and old battery in and i worked fine....then spent the next hour unlocking, recovery, flashing ROM and updating apps+data....done and my new phone is practically the same as the old was.
Now i have 7 days to return the old one in the same package or they will charge me $300....probably im paranoid about the data in the old phone, but after reading http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2012/08/apple-amazon-mat-honan-hacking/all/ i immediately went and added 2-step verification to my google account...
So in summary, very good replacing process from TMo (if you have insurance), and added extra security to my GAccount...for the rest, just crossing fingers that nothing bad happens in the future

Maybe I just missed it Strapped but I never even knew about that issue with MoDaCo until I had already moved on to 5.0.2.7. Then I liked to have crapped my pants!

Try another rom although it sounds like an app. Can't be the phone on that many of them. You only one reporting this problem so has to be something you are putting on phone.

both phones are doing this on stock. no apps installed
My friend had 8 replacements through verizon before he got a good one. So try a couple more times maybe. I know it is really inconvenient but honestly the GS3 is the best Android on Verizon right now (arguably atleast) and they probably won't let you trade up to a Razr HD Maxx which is the only one I would recommend.
I'm having the same problem apparently. I just bought this phone used and activated it monday night. That night, i plugged the phone into the charger while i slept and the phone shut off overnight. Phone wouldnt turn on with the power button - required a battery pull to restart.
Going through tuesday, the phone worked fine. However, in the evening, the phone was idle for a few hours, and when I went to check it before going to bed I found it had powered off again! Required another battery pull to restart...plugged it into the charger, and went to sleep. When I woke up, I again found (for the third time) that the phone had powered down, and required another battery pull to restart.
Going into wednesday, phone is working fine. Then I leave it idle in the afternoon for a few hours during work, and when I get ready to drive home, I find it is again powered down, requiring a battery pull to restart (fourth time in less than 2 days).
Now I go to visit verizon, and the rep tells me (after I think he was looking through some company forums for answers) that I should try clearing the cache from every app, since maybe the data was corrupted during my OTA update to JB (which i installed monday night), and some app was causing this problem. So I do that, and the same thing happens again overnight...battery pull etc...
I'm figuring next I'm going to do a factory data reset, possibly tonight. This is supposed to be my sister's christmas gift! Hah...trying to work the bugs out before tuesday. Any thoughts?
Starting a post with I'm not crazy sound like something a crazy person would say.... just saying.... But I agree with the earlier post that it could be app or rom based and only effecting the screen. These are the options I see you having:
1. Try freezing any apps you've installed one at a time and see if it stops
2. Make nandriod and try another rom and then come back if that doesnt fix it
3. Try this thread to clear everything and upgrade http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984436
-This method formats internal and external sd card AND bumps you up to rooted JB in the process. Use VRBLK3.
4. Get a replacement phone

These options might work for the OP, but only #4 could work for me since i'm not rooting this phone (its for my sister). If I find a fix for my issue, i'll post here.
Are you guys using an sd card? If so it might be a corrupt file that the system goes over and gets stuck on, messing the cell up. Did you try making a backup on pc, formating your card (fat32) and putting you stuff back on it? Or take the card out and see if you get the same problem without it. If you're going thru all the replacements then its gotta be something that you use in common with all of em. GL!
Up until this afternoon I have been using my One X without issue running CleanROM 4.5. I took my phone out of my pocket and suddenly I got an error saying the SIM card is no longer detected. I immediately turned on airplane mode and then turned it off again, advice I remember reading from other people with similar issues, however it didn't fix the problem. Thinking it was possibly a contact error, I took the SIM out and put a piece of tape on the back and reinserted it, to no avail. I tried adding another piece of tape to make sure; again, nothing. I backed up everything and wiped the phone, and installed RebelMOD to see if it was potentially an OS issue; unfortunately, the different ROM makes no difference.
Am I SOL here on a software-related fix? Is it possible the SIM slot just went bad all of a sudden? I tried another SIM card from my work phone but it was not detected either, while the SIM from my phone was detected in my work phone. All of this points to a hardware issue, but I'm wondering where it came from and why it happened so suddenly, as well as what my options are.
Thanks in advance!

I'm having the same problem here, I had the phone for like 2 month and last week all in a sudden
no more reception as the phone doesn't detect the sim card anymore. The worst came after, I tried to open my sim tray with that HTC pin provided with the phone, and instead of opening it damaged the metal slot and couldn't get my sim card out. So now I m without phone as I had so bring back to JB Hifi and they had to send it over east for repair as the warranty goes through Fone biz and told me I have to wait 2 weeks for it to get repaired and sent back. Has anyone been throught that?
Thanks
Sudden SIM Destruction!!
I had that same thing happen, i was playing a game and all the sudden i heard a pop and no sim message appeared! My warranty wont cover because i have a tiny hairline crack on my screen! can anyone please help!
A pop is bad. Probably not easily repaired. For the others you could try a piece of tape on the sim give it a tighter fit up against the contact in the phone or purchase a new sim tray
