you can unlock the bootloader if you want to flash custom kernels, howver I think there is a way to install cwm with locked bootloader.

Do I have to unroot from ics to get OTA jellybean work? I've read that the way of rooting ics and jellybean are different.

Hi all,
My friend has a nexus s, and he would like to root it, but he is worried about the following:
If he roots and unlocks the bootloader, will it still be easy to install OTA updates when they are released?
If he roots and unlocks the bootloader, will it be easy to install jelly bean when it is released for his phone? Or would it be difficult to do?
Is the any disadvantages with rooting and unlocking the bootloader?
Thanks in advance for any help you can give
Cheers corey

Nexus S has been rooted and unlocked bootloader will not be able to install OTA updates, but you can install a lot of custom ROMs which are much better than stock official ones.
You can install ota's just fine with a unlocked bootloader and a stock rooted rom.
As long as you don't modify anything in /system of the stock rom that the script in the ota checks for. It will install just fine.
Hi,
Ok thanks heaps.
So if he rooted his nexus s, he could install jelly bean (the next version of android) the same way as if he had not rooted?.
And would the be any disadvantages with rooting his phone?
Thanks heaps
Cheers Corey

Like the title says, is the Asus tool the only way? From what I read I need to have the bootlader unlocked to install custom roms, right? Thanks!

Thanks. I should be buying a TF300 in the next few days. If I do the JB OTA and then unlock, and decide that I don't like JB, will I be able to install ICS roms? Would I have to downgrade the firmware? Thanks again for any help...

Even with an unlocked bootloader, there's currently no way back to ICS from JB. So if you update, you're stuck there for now. There are one or two custom JB Roms though if you aren't happy with stock JB.

Thanks for that. If I go the other way around and stick with ICS and unlock the bootloader, will I be able to upgrade to JB later (not necessarily stock JB)?
Hi guys..i need help here..my friend ask me to unbrick his HTC Explorer..its rooted already..he said its happen bcoz he wrongly deleted software..system file perhaps..so the situation here, its stuck into white screen with HTC logo..i search google, i can unbrick it using RRU..but one of my friend said, RRU cannot be done on unlocked bootloader..so i wanna ask if anyone can guide me, how to unbrick it to stock rom..i dont know whether this phone bootloader unlock or not..how to check it? thanx
EDIT : Done..its unlocked and i just flash any custom rom..is there any pure stock rom that flashable on CWM? or i only can use custom based on stock only?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2189199 This is as close as it can be to stock rom, there is pretty much no difference between this and ruu, only installation method. If you want check out this thread also http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2225776 this is with the newest official update for explorer

my friend, i tried both, but end it with bootloop..but other custom rom can boot to homescreen..hurmm..but i wanna stock rom..did i need to flash stock kernel first?
That's weird... No, kernel first is not needed for the phone. Can you try first flashing this http://www.mediafire.com/?lim1od8qrjdbblp and after that one of the roms, another idea is to search for a backup of stock rom, then just restore it, I'm sure somewhere here in the forum I saw one, just couldn't find it now and I don't have a lot time, will try again later.Or ask in of the rom's thread, I just have no clue why stock roms don't work for you.

It appears to be the case of soft brick. Just download any custom from of your choice (IMO go for cm9#12) and flash it.

wipe everything via recovery, make sure your bootloader is locked, get into fastboot mode and run the RUU on your PC.

Hello guys, I have a very little issue after downloading the OTA to install it
You can find the software version details for my HTC Butterfly X920D in attachments and more info also.
JB 4.3.
Simply I checked for new updates and I found there is new updates as you see in attached pics. Definitely I tapped update and then unfortunately it shown Variant system version! as you see in attached pic
I've relocked my phone and replaced TeamWin recovery with the original stock recovery but also I'm getting the same message
You can find a screenshot for my Bootloader and the Recovery in attachments.
I don't know actually If my rom is stock or not but as you see the screenshots guys, can you tell me?
and can you tell me how to solve the OTA issue in order to download and install it successfully?
Thanks, best regards.
Dear Omar,
I have same issue, because I have no original stock recovery...
While trying to install, and have to reboot, the instalation has failed...
Can you share the original stock recovery?
Thanks

Once you unlock the bootloader it stays unlocked, so flash JB firmware using Flashtools right now.. :good:
