I am still on a ROM with the exynos bug, so I am using Exynos Abuse to root/unroot (Sky go with root does not work).
Today I have tested the following:
- rooted with exynos abuse (which installs super su)
> sky go not working, multiwindow manager working
- installed ota rootkeeper
- backed up root with ota rootkeeper
- temporarly disabled root with ota rootkeeper
> sky go not working, multiwindow manager not working
- backed up root again with ota rootkeeper
- unrooted with exynos abuse (which removes super su)
> sky go working, multiwindow manager not working
- restored root with ota rootkeeper
> sky go not working, multiwindow manager working
- removed root with ota rootkeeper
> sky go working, multiwindow not manager working
So, my question is: do I really need super su if I can simply retsore/remove root with ota rootkeeper?
I am asking because i want to install the latest German ROM, but this ROM has the exynos bug fixed, which means I cannot use any longer Exynos Abuse to easily root/unroot.
So I am wondering if the following will work
- on 4.1.1 with exynis bug
- root with exynos abuse
- back up root with ota rootkeeper
- unroot with exynos abuse
- upgrade to 4.1.2 without exynos bug
- unistall exynos abuse (useles now)
- restore/remove root at will with ota rootkeeper
Actually I usually keep the tablet unrooted to use sky go, I need it unrooted only to use multiwindow manager.
Thanks

I bought a second hand xperia play that has a superuser app so i thought i might have a rooted phone, i downloaded titanium backup to delete some pre installed games and apps but when i read more about rooted phones i decided to make the most of my phone by downloading adfree, hide it pro and rom manager but all three apps say i require root, so my questions are
1) is my phone rooted
2) how do i check to see if it is rooted
3) is it possible that i would just have to update my root
4) can you use titanium and superuser without root as the 2 apps seem to work.
Thanks in advance.
1. From the information given, yes it must be rooted.
2. Download Root Checker for free and it will let you know.
3. As far as I know, a root can't be updated. Once it's rooted, that's it.
4. It's possible to have them without root, but you have to be rooted to use them.
I hope I helped

Thanks for the response, I have downloaded several root checker apps but all of them including the adfree, busybox and Rom manager seem to think I am not. I just find it strange that I have superuser and titanium that both work fine.

Yes they my work fine, but there usage is limited, they canot access the system partition.

Does that mean to say there are parts of titanium that can be used unrooted.
Root binaries and the App can be updated.
While we are it, what does my app say about your root status?

Yes, you can backup all your installed apps in batch mode and restore in batch mode. You will not be able to freeze or delete system apps.

First, sorry if this is the wrong forum for this, but as a new user, this is the only place I seem to be allowed to post.
Anyway, I have been trying to follow the steps in this thread to gain root on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus WiFi (P6210)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1777003
I am running Stock ICS 4.0.4.
I managed to get through, booting into recovery, starting CWM (temp version) and installing the root package. Selected reboot and installed SuperUser apk from the market and then tried to update SU. All this went off without a hitch.
However, when I try to get the SuperUser apk to update SU, I get Gaining root access: Failed
I went to ChainsDD's site and grabbed the latest stable SU directly from there (version 3.1.1 for ARM)
http://androidsu.com/superuser/
I even tried some of the other archived versions and his latest 3.2RC3 release, but still the SU apk will not gain root.
It shows latest version = 3.1.1, installed version = 2.3.1-ef.
It succeeds in downloading sutools and new binary but fails in gaining root.
I saw some suggestions about clearing data for SuperUser.apk, so I tried that and another reboot, and still no luck
I am not sure what to try next. I saw some notes about fixing perm for SU, but I am not sure how to do that, I thought the SuperUser APK would do that for me. I did note that the listed perms for the SU seem odd to me (sell, odd compared to su on my Liniux box anyway) and are shown in red in the SuperUser app window
Can anyone help me?
Thanks
I have searched and not found this specific issue.
I believe my issue may be associated with BusyBox but wanted to confirm before I go through the entire process again...
1. Was at JB 4.1.1. downgraded to ICS, rooted and went back to JB.
2. Root lost. I assume due to forgetting to establish a root keeper.
3. Moved back to ICS, rooted, established root keeper (Voodoo RootKeeper). Moved back to JB.
4. Verified root with RootKeeper, Titanium Backup, Root Explorer SuperUser Elite 0and began reloading apps.
5. I installed BusyBox.
6. BusyBox now reports that the device is rooted.
7. However RootKeeper, Titanium Backup and Root Explorer all report that it is not.
Q #1 - My guess is that BusyBox overwrote something. Is that reasonable? Or is it something else?
Q #2 - Could it have anything to do with SuperUser Elite which I am also using? Is there any compatibility issues?
Q #3 - Although I'm getting fairly good at the process, once I go through the process and verify root under JB are there apps I should not reload?
Thanks

I recommend the real root test - can you get a root shell, e.g. via adb or a local terminal emulator?
I rooted my phone back on ICS and when I updated to Jelly Bean, I used root keeper and restored the root. Voodoo rootkeeper says that I my device is rooted. My titanium backup shows that I have root and the program works perfectly Lightlow has root and works perfectly. The problem is that I can not grant root permissions to other applications. Superuser is installed, but shows outdated binaries.. I tried to update them but it says no root. Rootchecker also says that I do not have root. What I dont get is that the programs I already granted root access still work but I cant add more. Any ideas on what is going on? Thanks!
Alright so I was looking to take the ota as the p-rom description states you should have the newer build and I want to start using it and the Xposed framework. Here is what I did to retain root.
-----------------------------------------------------
1) Delete modified SystemUI and replace with original (if applicable)
2) Freeze TricksterMod bc of on boot settings kernel modification (if applicable)
3) Unfreeze ATT OTA files in TiBu
4) Download Voodoo OTA Keeper, backup current root and use temp. unroot
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.projectvoodoo.otarootkeeper
5) Go into Superuser / SuperSU and uncheck enable Superuser
6) Go to Software update and take ota
- On reboot it said custom for me, but installed OTA without issue
7) Restore root file in Voodoo, check Superuser enabled box in Superuser/SuperSU
8) Download Root Checker and check root access
- You now have the new firmware without having to reroot the device or use Odin

this seems like a lot more work than the Motochopper script.

I was already rooted using that script and wanted the OTA as I described above. I didn't want to Odin stock to take OTA or use a file explorer to delete busy box and su in system/xbin (unrooting the device) only to then reroot using motochopper. This just seemed easier to me. The first 3 steps are case dependent on what you have done to your device. I had kernel tweaks, modified SystemUI and frozen ota updates, so I had to do those, but most just need to do 4-8
