Stick with One X or switch to GS3? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I had broken my original One X and had it replaced twice through the insurance. My original was black, the first replacement was a new black one with an at the time unrootable update, so I sent it back and they sent me a refurb white one which was defective from the start but I didn't feel like waiting another week for probably another wrong phone so I decided I'll just stick with this phone. That phone decided to die on me and wouldn't turn on and it was still under warranty so I took it to the device support center an got a new black one, but it has the JB update already. I went to my local AT&T store to ask if I could exchange it for one with an earlier update (I gave them some BS about how I preferred the ICS software to the JB one) and they said since I got it less than a week ago I could probably exchange it with one with an earlier update since they're supposed to replace the exact same phone I had or if they don't have that they could probably give me a GS3 instead. I've loved the One X, but I'd also love to try something new. Just looking at comparisons I can't really decide on which to take, giving I CAN get a GS3 out of this. So what I'm asking is through personal experiences, what do you prefer? Whatever I get will be rooted and running a custom ROM etc within a few hours so all that root goodness that comes with these phones will be in consideration too.
TLDR? Rooted One X or rooted GS3 from personal experiences with them?

Go with the GS3, hands down much better phone, easier to root and install ROM's, etc... basically much more development going on with the Samsung phones. Not to mention the expanded memory option and replaceable battery.

Just got off the phone with the device support center, apparently the guys at my local store are clueless and don't know what they're talking about. They don't have any One X's with earlier updates on them and they can't give me something comparable to it such as the GS3. Looks like I'm SOL until someone finds an exploit for the JB One X update
Thanks for the reply anyways!

I came from SGS3 to HOX. There are some significant advantages, but nothing that's worth actually spending (few bills) money on. But here are some SGS3 advantages:
- Better touch screen digitizer
- Better vibration module
- Better loudspeaker
But here are some HOX advantages:
- Better screen (clarity, brightness, color, warmer/natural tone)
- Slightly better battery life (screen on time)

I don't understand how the touchscreen can be better or the vibration module can be better. Does the touchscreen predict my touch before I actually touch? Does the vibration module vibrate at more vibrations per second so I can punch a hole through cyborg superman?
As for the camera, having used both, I much prefer the way the hox's pictures turn out.
If I were to get a new phone it would be a nexus.

I've owned both as well and I completely disagree with this. The rear camera on the One X is by far a better camera. Not sure about the front facing one, never used it on either device.

From the above posts, you can see there isn't a clear consensus on the camera comparison. And you can see from various online reviews, that compare the cameras side by side, that the One X wins in some situations, the GS3 in others, with no clear winner. Neither really has that significant of an advantage in the camera category, and it probably just comes down to personal preference, if anything.
Also, nobody has mentioned the physical (industrial) design and materials. The One X is very sleek, with a high end look and feel. While the plastic used on the GS3 has a cheap look/feel; and the design is pretty generic. Something that Samsung doesn't look to be changing anytime soon, as the GS4 looks almost exactly the same (just a bit larger in footprint, and a tad thinner).

First of all, it's not necessary to mock me because I am opened to criticism. But thank you for your inquiry.
The touch screen on One X required firmer taps, and longer swipes to correctly recognize my tap and swipe inputs. For me at least, this provided better experience on S3 from less touch input errors. In addition, this was with both devices running CM10 Stable, with same apps, same home screen arrangement, and same settings, with stock CM kernel. Both devices were North American versions with Snapdragon S4. However, my HBOOT for my One X at the time was 1.14. I don't know if higher version HBOOT improves the digitizer.
I should retract my statement about (back) camera performance, because I guess that depends on various environmental factors and personal preference.
Now, as for the vibration module, it's kind of hard to describe in words, but you just notice it when you use both devices. I found the S3 vibration feedback sharper (with added bonus of varying intensity). You can really notice the difference when it comes to haptic feedback when typing on the keyboard. I'm guessing because motor-based vibration module are less responsive as it may require more time to "kick it" into motion.
I won't comment on design and build quality because I slap a cheap cases around my devices anyway haha
Again, these are the differences I found from both devices that affected my experience using both device, which some of you may or may not find much value.

Yeah I was thinking about selling the One X for a Nexus 4 16GB but just looking on Craigslist I highly doubt I could get enough for it to do that plus other bad experiences with CL
But After calling multiple stores there's nothing they can do, the most they can do is replace the phone with the same exact thing with the same update so looks like I'm stuck with no root until a dev can find an exploit :/
Hate to say it but not having a rooted phone for the first time since I switched to Android seriously sucks :crying:

in my opinion.. HTC ONE X. I don't like the colors of the GS3 screen... to much blue for me, ok...the blacks are black, but instead of white being white, they are almost a soft blue.

Precisely, the unbranded One X and the AT&T One X(L) are two different phones. I'm not sure on the state of the international One X's Jelly Bean root status though.

Only the AT&T version has issues. Every single other one x or xl is fine because they can just unlock thru HTCdev

So after an hour and a half on the phone with AT&T I'm going to receive a "like new" white GS3 on Monday or Tuesday. Not a bad way to start my Spring Break lol. I'll miss the One X for sure, but I'm looking forward to changing it up a bit.

Any DC users think of moving to the Bionic?

I'm thinking about it, is anyone else?
Has anyone of you played with one yet? I hear they have CM7 on it already....
After jumping to several new phones and then being pissed while waiting on a good ROM to come out, I have finally seen the light. I am no longer jumping to a new phone the second it comes out. When I see that there's a good amount of dev being done on a device, then I'll switch. That's right around the time something new comes out... So, I'll still be upgrading every year or so, but about 6 months after the new stuff gets released.
Thankful for the devs that make these phones great!

And when I do swap, it'll probably be for the Prime...
No, the Charge is a quality device and I will be happy with it until there is a phone launched with ICS on Verizon. The Bionic has no guarantee for timely software updates and comes with too much bloatware for my taste. Honestly, I only bought the Charge to have unlimited 4G data. I would have rather just waited for a device with ICS but Verizon forced my hand.

The Bionic has way too many disadvantages for me starting with the awful looking washed out/grainy pentile screen, the camera sucks etc etc etc
My boss had one for two days & I played with it constantly before he returned it. Neither of us where impressed with the thing at all.

I am spoiled rotten by Super AMOLED and + displays. There is no way I would be happy, content, or even mildly okay with a pentile fuzzy screen. If something comes out that is faster, has more memory, AND has an awesome screen then I may consider it. I don't have to have a screen as good at the Super AMOLED or Super AMOLED+, but they sure have set the bar really high for me.
The screen was the deal breaker for me, no point in having a super fast phone if it looks like s*!#

AMEN Brother
I've had just about all the smartphones out & only 2 or 3 have been an upgrade
I am on contract but don't mind selling the phone to recoup some of my loss..
Two reasons why I'm thinking of moving away from the DC.
1. Handset speaker volume to low during a call...yes I have it all the way up!
2. No matter what ROM I use, the phone gets laggy after a few days and needs rebooting to clear. Using Zeam as launcher right now too!
Battery life is ok, get about 2 - 2.5 hrs of "screen time" a day
I do love the screen though...except for the over saturated colors....wish there was an app to adjust saturation

Well, I have to totally agree with you on all of those. #2 is the one that really kills me, especially when you are trying to do something as simple as making a phonecall.
We need a good app like QuickGamma, that would fix the colors with the screen. Red is WAY overblown!

Many Fascinate users were upgraded to the Charge for free during a short period of time. I, myself, was one of those users and I am eligible for an upgrade if I were to see something I really liked.
As was pointed out, many other people buy phones off contract. There is a huge used market. Many folks will buy a like-new used phone and turn around and sell it when something bigger/better comes out to recoup some value from it. There are lots of folks that upgrade their phone several times a year for a number of reasons.
I don't upgrade that often, but I've seen others that do.

Cracked Housing Question

Hi Everyone,
My girlfriend lost her iphone 4s a few weeks ago. I've found a one x for a great price except the housing is cracked by the charging port. Is this something I should worry about?
Also, coming from an iphone, is the htc one x fairly intuitive? IMO, it's a better phone but my girlfriend is not as tech savvy as I am. Please let me know, thank you for your help.

Give her a few days and messing with it and she'll figure everything out. It's not like things are super complicated to find or do and there are plenty of "getting started with android" articles out there.
Got a picture of the cracked port? If it's between the port and the screen I wouldn't worry about it. If it's on the other side creeping towards the back of the device I would be a bit worried that a few more drops could propagate the crack.
I don't have a picture but I'm going to see it tonight in person. Thanks for your reply, much appreciated.

You have your answer for the crack, but the change from iPhone to HOX is very easy.
I actually came from an iPhone 4 before the HOX.
The only thing i think she'll miss is Siri, its a gimmick anyway and there's voice to text and voice control on this phone.
Best of luck to you guys with the transition.
PS: You could also get the housing replaced if it bothers her.

Make sure to turn it on to make sure it boots. Also you should boot it into the bootloader (reboot the phone and hold vol down until the bootloader shows up). At the top you'll see some words like LOCKED, TAMPERED, RELOCKED, etc etc. If you see TAMPERED that means the phone is rooted. UNLOCKED or RELOCKED means the bootloader has been unlocked or relocked.
If the person has a custom rom installed on it, I would ask him/her to RUU it back to stock before giving it to you. It'll be helpful to your girlfriend to have stock software so she can find the support she needs for it without coming here to the forums being confused about why hers has weird bugs and isn't running stock.
I bet some one took that bad boy apart. That's the only way I have seen that particular area get cracked, is from taking the phone apart

How do you guys like the One M8 so far?

Im coming off of contract soon, and thinking about getting the HTC M8. I was wondering how you guys feel about it after owing it for sometime, although its still pretty new? Im coming from a Verizon Moto X dev. Edition, how much of a shock ( if any ) will I be in with the HTC m8?
Thanks.
p.s. Im thinking about this or the HTC one MAX... I think that is a different device though.
I love it so far... Had the Moto x dev edition not too long ago as well, but moved back to my Note 2 because I missed the larger screen and external SD card.
Switched to the M8 because of a common technical issue with the Note 2 that I didn't want to put up with anymore. I already know that I didn't make a mistake. This thing is blazing fast and smooth as silk.
Needs full root, though. I need to use my extsd!

I came from the nexus 5, basically just wanted something different. Love the build quality. Phone is amazingly fast stock. Sense is better than it used to be, still put the GPL launcher on it though. Screen is great, wish it was bigger for the size of the phone, bezels are way to big. Camera is decent but not that great. Battery seems good, can easily get through a day with somewhat heavy use.
Any other specific questions just ask.
I find it kind of funny that they release a phone with KitKat and an external SD probably knowing that there was an incompatibility and wouldn't function 100% properly. I have to now install root, xposed, and a module just for R/W access to my ExtSD. Also, with Xposed sometimes have to hard reboot and re-enable Xposed since it makes WiFi wonky.

The top and bottom bezels are maybe a little large (but the speakers are housed under them, so it's understandable), but the side bezels are pretty small. In fact, without a case, they're maybe TOO small. When I hold it one-handed and try to reach for something with my thumb, the skin of my hand frequently hits something on the right-side of the screen accidentally.

I am in love with the phone it's truly amazing how htc made it.

Switch or come from M8?

Anyone thinking about switching to the M8, due to root and not being able to control the battery? Or come from the M8 and have comments?
Contemplating the switch
I'm coming here from a galaxy s4 and my s5 should be shipping but I was really on the fence between these two. But with this one no having root and everything I'm still not sure what I'm going to do. I'll probably just try out s5 and see if it's worth keeping even without root. What are your guys complaints on s5.

i came from the G2, the battery i kill in less than a day. i check my email and FB @6am. by 6:20 my battery is at 90% with the powersaving on and grayscale feature disabled. using wifi.
i feel like i cant get through a day. with my G2 i could get through an entire work day and be at 70% battery.
Going to look at the M8 now

Wow first I'm hearing about such subpar battery life. I was under the impression that the s5's battery is a bit better then M8.

It's definitely better, I don't know why anyone would look to the M8 for an improvement if they're coming from the GS5.

I returned the M8 due to it being ridiculously slippery and just very difficult to hold. I'd hold my breath each time i got it out!

I got the HTC One M8 the day it came out for Verizon and it is an incredible phone. Very fast and responsive, beautiful and sleek but coming from a galaxy s4 ( and thinking I was tired of touchwiz and Samsung phones) I couldn't get used to the volume controls in the other side and such. I switched to the S5 (burning my only exchange option) in the day 14th of using the M8 because of the wonderful screen, the better camera and the volume keys location besides that this phone feels sturdy and robust.
I dislike the vibration caused by the speakers and how different it sounds when compared to the M8. Also I see myself double tapping the screen frequently to turn on the phone. But the main difference is how slow this phone is compared to the M8 and even to my "old" galaxy S4. Despite all those facts I still love my S5 and if I had the chance wouldn't exchanged it back with the M8 even when I keep looking for apps to turn on my screen by double tapping and ways to make my phone faster.
I'd prefer to wait longer and if I don't get use to the slowness of this device I might give it to my wife in August (when her upgrade is available) and get myself a new phone such as the new LG G3, etc. I used to root and install lots of ROMs in my old S3 (now my wife's), and other phones but I did not root my S4 and did not miss it. I am OK with my S5 if it was faster and could double tap to turn on. This screen in amazing and I think I already got used to Samsung phones.
M8 is a great phone but to simple for me and the screen don't get close to the S5 in my humble opinion. Besides it's heavier and slippery that I thought I was going to drop it any minute, even when I can't get over its speed and responsiveness.

Im coming from S4 to S5 but due to not having root im taking it back today. Actually liked how snappy it is and smooth it works. Reason i need root is need to tether my unlimited data. Was actually considering M8 cause its roited and unlocked but i just dont know might wait for that Sony to come out soon.
I'm on the gs5 right now but I seem to be having little issues like the screen not coming back on after hitting power then trying to turn phone back on. I do this a lot I'm noticing now. I've had each galaxy phone Verizon has had and I still have the m7 gs4 gs3 and gs5 this has the best screen IMO and will miss camera. I'll hold one to the gs5 in hopes of the root but will have the m8 as my main phone for the time being. The little issues I have from the gs5 makes it feel like a downgrade from the m7.

Had the s5. Bought the m8 first, then got the S5 but returned it to keep the M8. No regrets. I didn't like how long it was to have to reach up to turn the screen off but I found a screen off widget do one handed use is perfect.

First off, i'm impressed with this thread so far. Everyone giving their opinions and not telling anyone what they should do or that something sucks.. It's refreshing.
I own both myself and the G2. While the displays on the G2 and M8 are great and are by no means slouches, the AMOLED on the S5 is just stunning. The best on a mobile device I've ever owned. I do enjoy the back and it feels well construed. I went ahead and added wireless hotspot to my unlimited plan for another $30. I did this for more than just having it on my S5, the only device I own that isn't rooted but wanted to throw that out there for those who are worried about it affecting their unlimited data and don't mind paying the extra cash.. It only brings my bill up to $120 so it's acceptable for me. I love my devices and usually hold on to all of them but with S5, I planned on giving it a test run as I'm in love with the M8 and will not be parting with it anytime soon. But, I didn't count on my love for the S5's display. I'll be keeping it as well.. At least until the G3 comes out. A Galaxy device is like money in the bank. Great resale value. Owning all the devices that I do and cruising all the threads, it's obviously, as we all know, personal preference. Just keep at the reviews and find what features are most valuable to you.
If all my devices were held hostage and I was only allowed to keep one, it would be none of the above. It would be my developer edition Moto X, that is covered by warranty while being unlocked, rooted and running a custom ROM based the stock Moto UI.
Sorry for the novel, I always end up rambling.

I am exchanging my s5 tomorrow for the m8. The s5 is awesome but there's a few things I'm really looking forward to on the m8...
1. Root/s-off. This is important to me. For me having a phone without root is like having a bike with flat tires. You can still ride it, but it sucks and the bike is so much more fun with pumped up tires.
2. On screen buttons. I do not like the physical home button, and since I am left handed I HATE that the back button is in the bottom right hand corner. It's a pain for me to reach. If I could switch the back and recents button on the s5 that would go a long way.
3. Front speakers. I watch a lot of stuff on my phone and the first time I heard the speakers on the m8 I knew I was probably gonna exchange my phone.
4. Double tap to turn on. I fell in love with this feature on the G2 (kinda wish I had just kept that phone. It's a great phone. Gave it to my sister in law though). Once you get used to this feature it's hard to not have it.
Things I'll miss about the s5:
1. The screen. It. is. Beautiful.
2. Water resistant. It's been a long time since I've dropped my phone in the toilet. I'm overdue for it to happen again.
3. Removable battery. I've always like this feature.
Any thoughts on the battery life of the m8 vs the s5? I know the battery life on the G2 was quite a bit better than on my s5. Is the battery on the m8 even worse?
Lastly - what's with the sim card on the s5 not being spring loaded? IT's a PAIN to take out.

What do you mean? I've tethered many times on different phones running kit kat. Lack of root kills tethering. Not kit kat.

You need more than root for tethering to work. FoxFi has stated that it will never work on KitKat. Hopefully somebody will find a way.

Good point. In my experience I have always rooted and then flashed a rom. Whether it was a stock rooted rom or a custom build like CM, tethering was always built in.

AOSP will probably not be an option. It was only possible on the S4 when it first came out. After updates, you could only flash TW based ROM's.

Coming from S4 MDK to the S5. My brother needed a replacement phone, so I made a commitment to give the S4 to him, knowing the S5 was going to be a PITA to root. Though we don't have root, I'd rather suffer with a locked down S5, than suffer more with a rooted M8. Can't wait for something else to come along and offer another alternative.
Please continue in the sticky thread for upgrading and device comparisons
Thanks

Returned my G3 this morning

I tried to like this phone , but could not... I was sick of the random reboots and overall sluggish feeling of this phone. I had Note 3 before this and what a mistake....Will get Note 4 in a few weeks.... It's been fun!!

Well good luck with the note.
I never had any issues out of my g3. Battery is great, no overheating, no random reboots, no major lagging as a matter of fact no lag at all mostly a stutter here and there in the app drawer from time to time. Been using the stock lg launcher since I got the phone and everything for me has been fluid.....
Lol then I see you made a post saying the phone was fast and no problems out of it........
I've had my phone for over a month now and I've never had any random reboots or overheating. I use my phone a lot so battery is meh for Me. But I'm happy and I love it.
No matter what, I can never stay away from android for long.
Lol I know it was new and I thought it was okay at the time...as time went on.. I started to have buyers remorse...with Att&t making us use Pma charging ..That was it for me...I just like Samsung better...

Just bought mine a lil over a week ago , hated to but got the carrier branded AT&T version. This is actually 2nd one. The first phone kept randomly shutting off during activation at the store. I like this phone. It has times where different points on the screen become unresponsive. Aggregating...it also seems to use much more of the ram than I would expect right out of the box. I use a tempered glass screen protector that may or not be causing my screen issues? As a LONG time HTC user, coming from the One, M7. I'm still getting used to something different. I do like it though. Thinking about rooting when I have time off because once boot loader is unlocked I think this device will be a beast!

Had my phone over a month now and absolutely loving it. Running stock rooted, no greenify. I froze all the AT&T apps and none of the LG ones. I use the stock launcher and get well over 4+ hours of screen on time, no overheating, no reboots, etc. My fiancee has the phone as well and she's been averaging almost 6+ hrs of screen on time, however where she works has better signal. I travel all over the place for work and signal is spotty.
No rebooting issues here. I will admit that my m8 outperforms the g3 (except for the camera). However, the note 3 that I received last year was a total disappointment. That was random rebooting nightmare. I guess it really depends on the specific device you get. Some may receive a subpar device.

Have the same issue with the screen becoming unresponsive in spots at times. I, too, have one of the tempered glass screen protectors bought from the AT&T Store. Such a coincidence, makes me wonder...

That's what I just said about my Galaxy S5. Now I can make calls from my new car, have no reboot issues and have a better signal in my home. No more unlimited data but I wasn't using exorbitant amounts of it before anyway.
Note 3 or 4 wouldn't solve my issues. Samsung's bluetooth stack is broken and they know all about it.
Get in where you fit in. Good luck.

It's the screen protector i had it and i exhanged it at the store cause i was still in my 14days after i bought it, they exhanged it and i got the invisishield one that i had on a couple devices in the past, i recommend you try to exhange it if not get a cheap screen protector while you browse for a new one cause believe me you will think its the phone but it's not.

Slow walking the bootloader unlock is gonna kill development. Seen it before. If it becomes a popular device devs will come and an unlock with it but I understand people wanting a device with options. I don't use 3rd party ROMs anymore so I don't care much.

Agreed. My M8 is faster too, but after a root / debloat / exposed / different launcher / no carrier IQ... not by much.
I have not experienced much lag, mainly keyboard (any) delays keeping up with typing.
I believe that we haven't seen the true potential of the g3 until this bootloader is cracked and meaningful customization is a reality.

This phone is great! No lag of any kind on my phone. It is rooted and running ART. No screen protector needed. All at&t bloat frozen. Phone is fast, battery life is very good. Better than I expected. The signal is also very good. I pick up LTE in my office at work where before I could only get 4g sometimes. Very happy with this phone as is.

I dunno about all that. According to development updates in the bounty thread devs working on it are confident that they can unlock it, and that it's right around the corner.
I'm all for meaningful customization.. I imagine my g3 with the latest miui on it, that would be sweet... That said, this is the first phone I've been happy with as is. Debloated, greenify, g3 tweak box and the stock rom isn't all that bad.

I have no idea what you're talking about! The note 3 is the best phone out right now. No reboots here at all. Ever. I had one issue on jellybean, the sleep/power button had some lag. But since I moved over to kitkat, that issue is resolved. The screen is sick! 5.7 inch, Super amoled, which is the best imo, 3gb of ram, 32gb internal storage, micro sd slot, usb 3.0. Need I say more? Lol. Now, I also love htc, is my first love. I used to hate samsung. That is until I gave the note 3 a shot. It changed my mind about samsung. And I tried the G3, but it wasn't for me. Ill stick with htc and Samsung.

Cool. I hope I'm very very wrong. I know some devs have unlocks waiting but I guess I'm used to devs staying away if development on a new device isn't hot - which usually is in line with how popular a device is. I'm lost on why this is working out like this with the G3.
I'm really happy with stock too for once. I usually root, unlock, throw Nova on it and maybe go with a stock debloat deodexed or some variation of stock. I can't believe I'm good with the stock launcher ,de-carrieriq'ed + tweakbox. I'm not seeing any lag issues at all either. This thing is dusting my S5. I'm just happy that everything is working, radio being disabled and IR being hosed for 3rd party apps sucks a bit but that's minor.
