One big thing (for me) that is missing from this phone is exchange tasks. The third party apps from the market don't do it for me. Can someone point me toward a working tasks.apk? Thank you in advance for your help.

Guys,
My other half needs a Treo replacement. She's a hardcore user of MS Outlook for email/calendar/contacts and tasks.
Eventually she might go for a Palm Pre, but in the interim as her Treo's died, I was thinking of trying her with a cheap ebay G1: if she likes Android then could upgrade to something else in time.
What I don't yet get is what the current situation with usable sync is.
Gmail/Gcal/Gcontacts are all fine (I use these with my iPhone and they're perfectly functional) but tasks seems to be the issue. What's Android like with sync to Google Tasks - i.e. I presume it'll sync phone to Gtasks on the web, but will it also pop up alerts when tasks are due, etc - i.e. run in background? If I could get all this to work in the Google Cloud that'd be great, as I could use Google Sync to get her laptop to sync up to the cloud to keep phone/web/laptop all in sync.
If I had to go to an Exchange Server account for her, then does this sync tasks as well as mail/cal/contacts, and run in background - i.e. pop up alerts when a task due and the task app isn't open?
Lastly, I'd like it to look pretty and I'm a big fan of firmware flashing (spent years on here in the past with WM devices!) so I'd be looking to a Superhero or Cyanogen ROM I guess. Heard talk that these may or may not include FULL MS exchange functionality.
Can anyone help me out here?
thanks
Ric
theoretically i would figure a senior mem would know to post in the correct section but since im nice ill ignore that.Anywho..theres a exchange app in hero that i use might be able to ouch the file to other roms though.the mail app does all of those i think.

Sorry, I was thinking G1 and so looking at options that work with it, whether native or through a ROM upgrade.
Doesn't look like tasks and task reminders is an Android strong point natively. Hero exchange app sounds interesting, will google it. If anyone has a decent method of getting tasks and task reminders to work (ideally without MS Exchange, but I'll pay for an account if I need it!)

Hi,
Looking to use my N1 to help manage my money, however I'm finding managing everything on the phone a bit fiddly. Ideally I would like to be able to manage things on my desktop, either with a separate app or through the browser
Does anyone know of any Android apps which have a desktop component or allow syncing with some other service?
Thanks!

While Mint looks great. its US only! For some reason they haven't got any UK banks at all
Hey guys,
I am trying to load mvelopes.apk and keep getting "Application not installed".
I have tried it from my "download" folder as well as "system/app" with no luck.
I took the apk from my phone, it was in a Titanium backup file (xxx.apk.gz) Could that be part of the problem?
Permissions are set to RW R R and root is the owner.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Without knowing what that app does, a possible reason for it not installing is that it has some dependency on other tools that either aren't enabled or are not available on the KF.
As an example, apps that use GeoLocation or the camera won't install because they are looking for hooks that just aren't there.
mvelopes is an app to manage personal budgets and money. It is associated with mvelopes.com and is a lot like mint.com.
Here is the Android Market Link
I would love it if somebody could see if they can load it on their device. Especially one that has market installed.
If you look at the Permissions tab it say's:
"FINE (GPS) LOCATION
Access fine location sources such as the Global Positioning System on the device, where available. Malicious applications can use this to determine where you are, and may consume additional battery power."
I think this is what is making it impossible to install right now, because it's looking for location services which aren't enabled on the KF. Perhaps with a custom ROM this might be possible in the future, but nobody knows for sure right now. Not all is lost, you just might have to wait a month or so to find out.
Thank you!
Thanks for looking into this and that would explain it.
I have also opened a ticket with Mvelopes requesting that they make it officially supported in the Amazon market.
I won't hold my breath as the ROM approach might be better once they get fully refined.
Thanks again!

I don't hold out hope that CM7 or any other ROM will help us here - Maybe they can spoof the location somehow to fool the app but it seems like your first instinct might have been right -- the onus is on the companies who build the apps to get with it and embrace the "tablet revolution". Basically apps designed for phone screens look silly on tablets; the wide bits of useless screen real estate are dreadful. Case in point - the Gmail app on the KF.
Light at the end of the tunnel tho - it seems that companies are suddenly realizing that "Tablet App" doesn't necessarily mean "iPad App".
Banking from my KF would be pretty awesome.

You may be right there, but I think Location Settings also include WiFi based geolocation as well as far as I'm aware? I'm not sure why such an app would require location settings anyway, it's a bloody budgeting app! Maybe the OP should approach the developer, and tell them they are missing out on the KF market here!
Someone should make a T-Shirt - Tablet App != iPad App

Yep, in this context (the Mvelopes requirements) Wifi geolocation can only provide you with the coarse location, not fine. As you point out tho, its a banking app - why on earth does it need to know where you are within 50m (I'm pretty sure that's the radius)? Quizzical indeed. Perhaps if a Dev sees this thread some light can be shed on why this is 'necessary'.
Some nerdy stuff on the subject from the Android Dev Guide: Location and Maps > Obtaining User Location
Coming from a couple years on the Windows platform mandated by the office but now they allow Android & I chose LG G3 - but there are some things on the Windows phone I miss and can;t find solutions for on the LG...
1 > The Nokia 920 had a great way of displaying the time on the time out screen - can't get that to work at all on the LG with any app..
2> The Windows platform will read texts to me while in the car on Bluetooth. There is an droid app called ReadItToMe but it is awfully inconsistent. I had heard the Samsungs come with svoice that do this well...anything similar for the LG?
3> Windows had a way of killing apps automatically in the background and keeping just 5 or so open...this allowed the battery to last for an entire day for over two years. I can not figure out how to do this on the LG. I dl Advanced task killer but it seems more manual than auto...maybe my fault.
Thanks for any productive input!

Welcome to android and in answer to your questions:
1. What you are referring to is a feature of some Nokia Lumia Windows Phones called Glance Screen and I have not seen any android phone with this feature. Sorry but I don't know of any apps that can do this as this currently appears to be hardware specific to the Lumia line of phones.
2. I believe the phone has the capability built in under "System Settings" "Sound", "Message/call voice notifications". There is an option for it to read text messages it loud. I think once you turn it on, it is on all the time though and not exclusive to bluetooth. If you are willing to buy an app and learn how to use it (depending on your knowledge it may be a steep learning curve), Tasker may be able to create a profile that sets the conditions under which this turns on.
3. This is an area of contention. I personally will no longer use Task killers. For the most part, various research and tests I have found states that it has no positive impact on the battery, and in some cases, actually makes worsens it. Android does a good job of managing memory and many of the active tasks should be left running (i.e. google services, weather, and/or any app you may want to keep in sync or have widgets for). In my opinion, ATK's only potential "good" use would be to kill a rogue app but you can do that without the program. I would focus more on the apps syncing in the background and how often they do so, along with other common things such as screen brightness, to get better battery life. For me, I will swear by Greenify over task killers (I am rooted so it is very effective) because certain persistant apps can be hibernated and can be set up to do so automatically when the screen shuts off. With Greenify, the apps remain hibernated while the screen is off and for the most part when the screen is on, unless I open the apps. An example is Facebook for android. I personally do not care about notifications received on my phone for my FB account. Even though I have chat, notifications, and contact sync off, FB persists to run as an active background process (not to be confused with cached background processes which get dumped as android needs active RAM). With Greenify, this is not an issue.
Thanks aybarrap1! I see you are in Jax near me - thanks for helping a local out!
I will try Greenify asap. Also - in the stock contact app how do you copy (or forward) someone's contact information & text it to someone else? WP made this easy but I can not figure it out...
THANKS AGAIN aybarrap1!

Open messaging, open the thread of the person you want to send TO (or create a new message), tap the paper clip button to the left of the text box to get a list of things to attach, then tap contact and select the contact to forward

Glad to be of assistance. I don't think you will be disappointed with Greenify. Keep in mind you need to be rooted to be able to hibernate system apps.
I am looking for it for a month and getting pretty frustrated by now. All those useless calendar apps are exactly the same it seems.
Does anyone know a calendar app that has a widget with a 12-month view? I just want it pinned on my screen without opening it every time... I never wrote any program but I start to think I will have to make it myself... with some open source base and a program to edit it or something.
Please, if you have any suggestions for a calendar app like this, or a suggestion on how to start writing it, let me know.
you want all 12-month view, you need this app for your tablet?

no, it's for my nexus 6p
there are plenty of calendars that have a whole year view inside the app, so I know it's perfectly visible on my screen,
but there are none that offer this kind of widget
but anyway, even if you find this kind of widet for microsoft windows PC it would be nice... but there is nothing like this even for windows, and it really pisses me off for some reason... does nobody in the world think ahead for more than a month? wtf...
edit: wow, I actually found one just now... only 2$ and works perfectly, called year calendar on google play store
You have also the app Annual view & widget who have multiple type of yearly views and other months views with their associated widgets
