So ever since I got my Asus back from RMA and I am waiting for them to fix my (unable to) unlock issues, I though I might try the official 4.2 but not without having root first.
So I downloaded the appropriate WW SKU .30 firmware .zip (MD5 matched), extracted it, renamed the extracted file and put it on my micro sd (like I should)
Unfortunately, every time I boot into stock recovery to perform the downgrade, it just shows me the annoying red triangle, which means that it was no success.
I really want my root access
Does anyone have an idea how to fix this?
With the .30 firmware I got from the asus downloads, I had to extract twice to get to the file and then rename.

Maybe that is what you have to do. The uploader may have downloaded it, and zipped it again, giving it two layers to be unzipped instead of one.

A locked tablet should just see the zip file as an OTA notification after booting back to the launcher.
Installing from recovery wouldn't be necessary in most situations.

Thanks for the advice.
The sad part is: I know their double zips, so I did everything right.
The tablet also recognises the update. And then, ... I click on it, it shows the working android icon for two or three seconds, before showing the belly up red triangle android.
This sucks...
Any further ideas?
Have to try to wipe data (factory reset) then do the update? (make sure you have a full backup with Titanium backup).

Check the filesystem of your SD card -- from my experience it needs to be FAT32. NTFS for sure doesn't work, exFAT may not work either (haven't tested).

Only FAT32 works for recovery. Both NTFS and exFAT formats will not work. For SDXC cards the default (Sandisk) format is exFAT so you have to format them FAT32 if you want to use them for recovery, but this will typically only show you 32GB max available for a 64GB and larger SD. So the largest SD you can practically use for recovery is 32GB FAT32.

What is the difference between a Titanium and a Nandroid backup? Do they both restore all apps, data, and /system files?

No, big differences, Nandroid backup (done through TWRP) will create a backup of your entire OS (everything, sys apps, users' apps, system settings, kernel, rom..etc.), but the downside is you have to restore the entire image (can't pick and choose). While Titanium only can backup your system apps and users apps with data. The advantage of Titanium is you can choose what app you want to restore with or without data when you restore an app. Usually anadroid backup is useful when you want to test out a new rom, you first make a nandroid backup and if for some reasons you don't like the new rom or your device crashed, you can just restore the nandroid backup and you're back to the same exact setup as before you upgrade/crashed.
Had to do a factory reset and use fat32 in order to downgrade... Gonna root as soon as downgrade complete

Noob to the rooting process on Transformer and dont want to brick it. There are lots of great articles and howtos. Here's my current state:

Should I follow Brk's process or something else?

You can use the NVFlash method.
If done right it will install Prime 1.4 and CWM recovery. After you're done you can boot into CWM and flashed the Prime 1.6

You have to boot into recovery, it's not an app.
Push and hold volume down plus power button, when you see lines of words appear st the top left, push volume up within 5 sec. That will boot you into recovery

I only see

I chose install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sdcard but dont see the zip file? Is this because its CWM recovery v3.1.0.1?
Install zip from sd card is correct, didn't remember exactly what it say.
The zip file need to be on the removable micro sd card not the internal sd card.

there's a netflix patch in the transformer's TF forum, which will cause the stock netflix app to work, i believe there's a link to where you can get it in the same thread.
also, prime 1.7 already has this patch. i'm not sure why you don't want to to upgrade to 3.2 . some people are reporting problem, but i think you'd find that those are more of the exception, rather than the rule. if not, you can always reflash back to 1.6.
the patch is basically a replaces the TF's codec library (as i understand it), and it inclues the one that netflix likes...however, it doesn't seem to support WMV, so it's a trade of.
also, it causes a problem with your /system partition being constanctly mounted at r/w

Awesome, upgraded to 1.7...Roach rocks!
Before you guys say anything, I've googled it and done everything there is to do. Here's a list:
1) Format and partition your SD Card in FAT32
i) Followed this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/SD_card_partitioning
Didn't Work. I partitioned it with an ext 2. partition. No Success.
2) Followed this guide and NVflashed my tablet. I was able to restore it to factory settings, but it's still not mounting my sdcard.
http://www.tabletroms.com/forums/tr...ment/976-nvflash-unbricking-forever-root.html
3) Went into CWM, tried to format my sdcard, but it said ERROR! Sdcard not found (something along those lines)
4) Tried 3 other different SD Cards
The current version I'm running right now is: PRIME v1.4 (HMJ37.WW_epad-8.4.4.5-20110527
After following the NVflash guide, my tablet is rooted with a flashed ROM, however I think it's a little outdated. What should I do?
Thanks for reading guys!
Are you using a full size SD card or a microSD?
In my experience you have to use a microSD in CWM (and it is called SD)

Thanks for the reply! I've tried both. However, I tried them at the store. I didn't format them to FAT32 I just used them straight out of the package. Not sure if that would make a difference.
Also, my tablet version is currently PRIME! V1.4 and it can't update. I'm a little lost. The build number is 8.4.4.5 and I know there is a higher version. I followed the NVflash guide mentioned in my first post.
Prior to downgrading my tablet version was 8.6.5.21 and it wasn't mounting my SDcard, which is why I downgraded. Now some of the accessory keyboard functions don't work (ie Alt+Tab) and the weather check app isn't working.
Anyway to restore it to stock settings without root?
Edit: Found the answer to my own question. How to reset to stock? Can't post links here so google "Asus Transformer NVFlash Stock 3.1 & Stock 3.2 Recovery Roms" and look for the post by zerofeel. I downloaded the NFVlash of the 3.2 Build of 8.6.5.13 for US.
I would still like help with the microSD card error though! Please and thank you! I'll try formatting the microSD to FAT32

Are you asking how to get CM10 working correctly? Or just how to get your TF101 working fine again? If the former, I can't really help you there, and that's just going to be difficult because CM10 is still in development, so there could be a host of problems. If you just want to get it working again, I would suggest finding a different (preferably STABLE) ROM and flashing it onto your device. That should work.
Also, if you're flashing a completely different ROM onto your device (not an upgrade or root, or whatever else,) I would go by the general rule of ALWAYS wipe your system, dalvik cache, normal cache, and if you're flashing files from an SD card, be sure to wipe your internal memory too. This will ensure that none of your previous files conflict with the new ones.
This happened to me when i ran one of the JB roms and then tried to nandroid back to revolver. By default the mounting for /data/media/ which is the internal memory is supposed to be at /sdcard/, but for some reason it got switched to /storage/sdcard0/. Nandroiding back to Revolver didn't help as the change was to something before the rom, so even twrp was acting funny because the mountings were present there also.
After some confusion i flashed superwipe lite and all was well. I ran lite since its supposed to leave /data/media/ alone, while reparitioning the rest of the system, so i thought that at some point its got to change the mountings back to the way it was supposed to be in HC and ICS.
Now if i could only remember where those mountings were originally saved i can just go in there and edit the file directly if this happens again.

Here's what I would suggest (assuming you have a microSD card):
Load your ROM of choice onto a microSD card and Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP) to your internal memory. Reboot into recovery and flash the TWRP .zip to install it, and then reboot back into recovery. After that, go to "Wipe" and run Wipe Cache, Wipe Dalvik Cache, Factory Reset, and System, and DO NOT REBOOT Then go back and choose "Install" from the menu and make sure you're viewing "using external SD," and there should be your ROM .zip. Flash it and reboot.
Let me know what happens or if you have any questions.

Alright, well, I'm not sure why your touch would't be working if you're using a TF101, but here's my last idea: Go here and do this. Make sure to read it carefully, as that basically just wipes your drive COMPLETELY and reinstalls the STOCK firmware. If you can't figure out how to do that, then I have no idea how else I can help you. I'm sorry.

Can you not just download a file manager app from the Play Store? There's several out there...
I'm trying to figure out why after downloading any file to my sd it goes into storage/sd0, and when I move the file it appears to move just fine to sd/downloads. However, when I go into TWRP recovery the files are not there. I have been troubleshooting this all morning and afternoon and it appears as though since flashing bb7 when it first dropped and then two days ago I flashed CROMI and now I'm apparently stuck here. Any help is appreciated.

It's because you updated to a 4.2.1 rom and then downgraded to 4.1.1 again.
Unfortunately 4.2.1 reorganised your internal sdcard without asking as well as setting some folder links and now they are incompatible with your recovery and android 4.1.1
Best fix is to copy everything some where safe, make sure you have a flashable rom or a Nandroid Backup on external sd, wipe internal from recovery, reflash cromi and then rebuild your file structure manually.
Sorry. The BB7 guys should warn you imo.
Hello all,
I would like to reflash CROMi-X and the MAX kernel but this time I want to do it as cleanly as possible. What are the steps to do this. I see it referenced all over that it is best to do a clean install but I can't find out exactly how to do it.
Sorry if this is a stupid question or if it is detailed somewhere that I could not find it but I want a good procedure that I can use whenever flashing new ROMS and kernels to be sure there is nothing hanging around that would cause variability in the install.
Thanks in advance for any help

Depends on which recovery you have installed -- the most often recommended sequence seems to be "wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe Dalvik cache, reinstall". Obviously, you may need to remove some apps' data folders from /sdcard by hand.
The opinions are divided as far as wiping the caches is concerned -- some do, some don't.

In TWRP select 'Wipe > Advanced' and then select everything except the external microSD. That'll give you a nice and clean installation.
Just make sure you have the Rom you want to flash afterwards on that microSD, not on the internal where it may get wiped

Hi, without hijacking this thread - i've installed Cromix and everything is running great, but i can still see folders and files i had created when my 700 was stock. Am i doing something wrong here? I would have thought that wiping everything except for the microsd card would have given me a blank slate to start with but it seems there is a fair amount of data left over after the ROM flash.
Actually as i'm typing this i've just had a thought, is it a case that the documents, pics, wallpapers etc are on a separate partition (for want of a better definition) and they're just visible after the installation?
thanks,

If you wipe or factory reset in TWRP, it erases everything except the /data/media folder, and that is where your data lives.... You have to manually erase those files if you want to get rid of them.
Interestingly, you'll find symlinks to the contents of /data/media in 4!! locations:
/sdcard
/storage/sdcard0
/storage /emulated/0
/storage /emulated /legacy
This crazy structure is due to the multi user support in JB 4.2. I still have a hard time to get my head around it....

How incredibly bizarre....but interesting nonetheless. 23 years in IT and it's time to start learning again. I kept going back to Settings>About and could see that the ROM was flashed, but the sight of the old files was making me think 'maybe it just reinstalled over the top of the stock ROM without deleting any data'....sort of like when windoze does a repair and keeps the data. Now that i understand user data is stored in a separate place away from the ROM itself, it makes it easier to upgrade and mess around. Backups are important, but it's nice to know you don't have to constantly relocate data and files when you're doing an upgrade.
Thanks for the info.....these forums are an absolute boon for people willing to ask questions and i'm amazed at the knowledge base that's been accumulated and is being shared - for the first time in a long time, tech toys are fun again. Now to choose a Kernel!!!!
The rom gets flashed to it's own partition: /system/...
If you watch the script when flashing CromiX, the installer formats the system partition automatically before flashing the rom. So you did not install over the old rom. The Data partition is different.
I'm now backing up data/media and then I will use the "Format Data" option in TWRP. Wanna know what exactly happens
