Noob to the rooting process on Transformer and dont want to brick it. There are lots of great articles and howtos. Here's my current state:
Got B60 (stock was 3.1) did OTA to 3.2
Build No.HTJ85.US_epad_8.6.5.6-20110726
Wish to root and install prime1.6rc2!
Installed ADB on PC (Windows)
Should I follow Brk's process or something else?
Step by step guide would be greatly appreciated!!
You can use the NVFlash method.
If done right it will install Prime 1.4 and CWM recovery. After you're done you can boot into CWM and flashed the Prime 1.6

You have to boot into recovery, it's not an app.
Push and hold volume down plus power button, when you see lines of words appear st the top left, push volume up within 5 sec. That will boot you into recovery

Yes download and put the zip on your micro sd card. Boot into recovery and choose "flash zip from sd card", "choose zip from sd card" and flash

I only see
-apply update from sdcard
-install zip from sdcard
I chose install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sdcard but dont see the zip file? Is this because its CWM recovery v3.1.0.1?
Install zip from sd card is correct, didn't remember exactly what it say.
The zip file need to be on the removable micro sd card not the internal sd card.
Alright on 1.6 prime Now ....Thankyou very much...now to download apps
Last q: is there a working version of netflix and google talk (with voice/video)?
Got Netflix working..next stop google talk!
Google talk should be on the rom but go here

there's a netflix patch in the transformer's TF forum, which will cause the stock netflix app to work, i believe there's a link to where you can get it in the same thread.
also, prime 1.7 already has this patch. i'm not sure why you don't want to to upgrade to 3.2 . some people are reporting problem, but i think you'd find that those are more of the exception, rather than the rule. if not, you can always reflash back to 1.6.
the patch is basically a replaces the TF's codec library (as i understand it), and it inclues the one that netflix likes...however, it doesn't seem to support WMV, so it's a trade of.
also, it causes a problem with your /system partition being constanctly mounted at r/w

Do i have to upgrade to 3.2 with OTA and then apply 1.7? or just flash to 1.7 directly in recovery mode over HC3.1?

there is'nt asus transformer in the list
any one have a solution with that ?
tq
Sounds like you have not rooted your TF yet. Check the Dev forum for the method that feels best for you and have at it. Then install the custom CWM posted in there also.
That'll get you rolling.

and i still dont see TF on the list ==
That's odd. When I rooted CWM was installed along side.
Have you tried to reboot into Recovery? (Reboot holding down the Power button and pressing Down on the Volume button. Then when the Recovery message pops on in the upper right corner....quickly press Volume up). You must be quick with that.

because now i use prime 1.4

but why now i can't mount my sd card ?
they say "Error mounting /sdcard "
You need to make sure your uSD is formatted correctly. This error is not uncommon. Windows and CWM often cannot format correctly (uSD).
Use this: https://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter_3/
ROM Manager is NOT compatible with the Transformer.
Depending of your method of root, a version of CWM usually get install with it.

And how should one be going about using this exactly? Should I assume that if one is running the usual flavours of Windows Fail that they would just download and install, it will auto detect the internal sdcard and microsd card where applicable, give you a drop down list of which one you want to format and have at 'er?
This was a issue for me after running the Asus Transformer root kit v7.1 and i managed to use nvflash and apply revolver rom and confirmed cwm as working but same storry with mounting sdcard. Please advice.

Take your micro sd card out, put it in a card reader and plug into your PC via usb port. Run the sd formatter program to format your micro sd card (save anything you don't want to lose first).
I was wondering if there is a way to download a rom or kernel and save the zip to my SD card then go in recovery and basically install it, without having to use my computer. I can move the zip file to my SD card from my phone but it never appears on the list to install when I go into recovery.

Of course dude, very easy.
1) Make sure you have CWM 5.0.2.0 installed via NVflash. There's a very easy-to-follow post on this in the dev section called "one-click nvflash installer."
2) Download the rom to your phone. This usually works from whatever link you were going to use to download it on ur pc.
3) Turn off your phone.
4) Hold Volume down and power until you see the second LG logo (The prettier one).
5) In CWM, do whatever wipes you need to do. If you're updating, wipe cache and dalvik, if moving from LG-based to AOSP or vice versa do a full wipe.
6) Select 'Install zip from sd card' (or internal sd card depending on where you downloaded the zip file earlier).
7) If its an AOSP rom, also install gapps.
8) Reboot.
9) Done!
EDIT: Sorry I just read your post more carefully. I guess you don't have the latest version of CWM because you say you cant find the file to flash once in recovery, right? The latest version (5.0.2.0) allows you to flash a zip from both your external and internal sdcards so try updating to that.
ohhh, no no no, i think you may have misunderstood my question lol. im already rooted and flashed and everything im just wondering if there is a way to download a rom on my phones browser and have it go to my sd card and then i just go to recovery and install from zip. i tried but the zip file never appears.
When you download something it gets saved in a folder called "Download" in your SD card just go to that folder and it will be in there
Nope not there

It will be in the internal sd card download folder. Not the external sd card.

You either have an old version of CWM, which is showing you the wrong sd card, therefore causing you not to find the rom zip, or you have the latest version and didn't know that it offers both internal and external support.
If you don't have 5.0.2.0 - update.
If you do - check both internal and external sd cards.
Hey guys,
I tried to flash my Eee Pad to official ROM and wiped everything off the tablet and when I tried to flash a ROM from my external SD card, the menu would go into the internal SD card only.
My tablet is stuck on the ASUS logo at the moment and it won't shut off nor will it recognize the external SD card necessary for me to flash a ROM.
What can I do?
In recovery...enable USB mount...plug to CPU...transfer the flashable zip to internal SD...
I'm on ClockworkMod Recovery v.5.5.0.4... I'm not seeing that option anywhere.
It's not under Mounts and Storage? Hmm. I used that recovery for only a minute...so not sure if that option was taken out....
I use Rogue version of the recovery. Its older...but for most of us normal flashers...it works well...it also includes the option to flash from external.
Is there anyway to transfer files from my PC to the tablet?

Well doesn't matter now since I used nvflash to revert back to stock but I'll keep that mind if there is a next time. Thanks.

So ive been at this for 2 days. I finally got the micro sd card with both files to install rom but in clockworkmod recovery i cant mount sd card nor format or anything. I can mount and unmount in the normal settings of the device and see it in root explorer but thats it. Its formatted to fat32. also on rom manager where it says to install from sdcard it only takes u to the internal sdcard which makes no sense because i was told u cant install a rom from the internal sdcard.
PS. This is my first Android Device!!!!
yeah
I am in the exact same situation. I am rooted on 4.0.3 and I wanted to install 4.0.4 or one of the custom ROM's. This is not my first android device but I am at a loss. I can not enter fastboot, can't load anything from the SD card in CWM recovery (get the message E:Can't mount /sdcard/), can not connect via ADB on my PC.
I feel that I have enough skill to do all of this because I have done it in the past. My ADB works fine with my Galaxy Nexus (just updated that and installed new kernel) so I don't know what is causing the problem. I have tried different SD cards(3) as well and nothing.
The biggest problem is I can not get into fastboot and SBF if I wanted to. I have been having issues with drivers even though I have installed motohelper like 6 million times.
I have tried factory resets and wipes and everything. I tried to do the factory update that is being pushed to me and I get an error. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry if this is stealing your thread but I think we are having the same problems.
check out my thread at xoomforums:
I PM'd it to u cus it dont let me put it here
Read all 3 pages. I think it will help u. posted same question there and a guy suggested to install the rogue cwm 1.5 recory via adb fastboot or whatever. he says that will read your sdcards. if i were u id try and fastboot on a different pc cus it looks like thats what we both have to do unfortunately. it looks like a pain!!! u have a xoom?
anyone figured out how to sort this?? really frustrating it just sayin E:can't mount sd card.. any help will be appreciated!!

If you are using CWM recovery from Rom Manager (not recommended for Xoom) it does only read your internal flash memory (called sdcard) but not your external microsd card (called external1???). So you need to flash a different custom recovery using adb/fastboot to flash a recovery.image file or, if you can flash through cwm (from internal sdcard) a recovery.zip file (either EOS or Rogue, depending on the ROM you will flash afterwards), Actually, any custom recovery is supposed to work for any rom, but in reality Eos works best for Eos and Rogue works best for the CM9 Kang.
Please, just remember, never flash a .zip file through fastboot, only an .image file!
+1 i agree with the above, fixed this last night. I download a couple recovery images, which were blank for some reason, so i downloaded the zips and extracted the recovery image folder. Then opened the command window from the folder with the recovery image and flashed it with fastboot. Now it works perfect.

Thanks for saving the last half of my hair which I hadn't pulled out yet.
Got the backup on SD ONLY after flashing the EOS recovery 1.5.0 (i tried the latest to begin with, did not work, made it worse flashing recovery from ROM Mgr)
http://www.xoomforums.com/forum/mot...ing-flashing-unrooting-under-one-roof-59.html has this particular recovery listed.
I still cannot boot in recovery using power+volUP...i have to get at least adb running. Any suggestion would be golden.

This is my first attempt at unlocking and rooting. So far I did manage to get unlocked. Now I am stuck at: Can't mount/sdcard . . . . .
I have been following the thread: [HOW] Rookie Rooting, Flashing And UnRooting Under One Roof
It seems to be layed out quite well and well, I'd never have gotten this far if it weren't for following those directions. I'm not discouraged because I know this is just a stumbling block. I can't wait to kill the bloatware and see if I can O/C this beast just a little.
Good luck to the folks who posted above me. I will post my results here.
Mike P.
I think the solution is much more simple...
The recovery uses normally e: an external sd card , you just trying by d: internal sd card , so take another sd card and dun let it be internal sd card...
And the recovery back on working with you
So i installed CM9 on my transformer and everything was ok. Eventually it turned off for some reason and kept getting stuck in a boot loop. I wiped everything using CWM 5.8.3.4 but now my tablet is stuck in CWM with no ROM to load. I cant mount my ex SD card and i cant mount my internal storage either. What do i do to fix it?

Do you have ADB access - i.e. is it visible on the PC? If not, first try cold reboot (Power + Vol-down for 12 seconds, then wait) undocked from keyboard and with USB disconnected.Connect to PC via USB and reboot to try to get ADB. If you still don't have ADB I'm sorry I don't know how to help.
If you have ADB, try this - it works on my TF101G. Go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1681155 and download PERI-0.4 One click root+recovery V0.4. Install it on your PC, run the .BAT file and follow the instructions. That should hopefully give you Root and Rogue Custom recovery that allows you to flash from internal or external SD.
From here you can flash a custom ROM from either internal or external storage. I've found that this Recovery won't flash the Asus stock ROM though,
If you want a version of CWM Recovery that will flash from internal or external storage, now download ClockWorkMod Recovery v6.0.1.4 NoTouch Hybrid from http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1855686 - click the Download link and get the cwm-6.0.1.4-notouch-hybrid.zip file (apparently the Touch version is currently broken). Copy to internal or external SD, reboot to recovery (Power+Vol-down for 12 secs, then Vol-up), wipe caches and flash CWM Recovery.
When you next reboot to Recovery, you should have a version of CWM that allows you to flash from internal or external SD.
