4.2 update live - Asus Transformer TF700

Just got the update and downloading.

Got it here too.
Hit check for update, as I do every day since last November, lol, and... Nothing. Then I look down in my systray, and whoa! There's an update! Came here to confirm. Whoo hoo! Hey did they ever resolve the issue with custom recoveries? I stopped following that last month when the TF300 got 4.2 but if I can just keep root for now I will be happy.
So I did some quick research before blundering ahead -NOW I am blundering ahead, having completed my quick research, see how that works? :silly: I at least updated TWRP to 2.4.40 which is compatible with the new 4.2 bootloader. I am not sure if that would have been a problem after the OTA (Installing it I mean, I am quite sure the old recovery would definitely cause problems)
Anyone stopping in before hitting the Update Now button, might want to read the first thread in this section (General)
ASUS JellyBean 4.2.1 updates - a warning
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2204100
It mostly for those with unlocked bootloaders, but, forewarned is forearmed or some such nonsense. Be careful out there!

sucks so bad that they didnt include the ability to switch launchers like on the TF300.

There is probably a reason. Also, usually their first updates are more test, I bet in a month or so there will be another update that will fix many bugs and add more features later. Many do not like the phablet mode on the tf700s, it is very hard to please everyone.

The setting is there, they just hid it for some reason. To get it you need a launcher like ADW, Nova, Apex, etc that allows you to add activities as shortcuts. Once you've installed one, do the following (instructions are for ADW but will give you the idea for the others).
1. Long press home screen to get context menu. Select Add>Custom Shortcut>Activities.
2. Scroll down the activities list to Settings and tap to expand. Then, scroll down to the Switch Launcher activity within the Settings sub-menu and tap to select.
3. Tap OK to create the shortcut, then tap it to launch the hidden menu.
4. There's only one option there, to the effect of "Switch to stock 4.2 launcher" or something like that. Tap it and you'll get a pop-up telling you the tablet needs to restart to apply the changes. Hit OK, wait for the reboot and enjoy the stock JB experience.
I'm trying to spread this one around so feel free to refer people to this thread for the instructions. It aggravates me that Asus felt the need to block us from having this feature. I've been using it for two days now and it works perfectly.
Attaching a photo as evidence of the fruits of my discovery.

What are the benefits of the stock launcher vs. the Asus one?
After switching to stock, will I still be able to switch back if I wanted to?

Yes,you can switch back with the same procedure. The benefits are mostly about personal taste, but honestly i don't like the new 4.2.1 UI.

My two main benefits are A) one-finger swipe-to-expand for rich notifications (I hate how awkward it is trying to expand notifications with two fingers on a 10" tablet) and B) True full-screen viewing of movies (instead of the black bar with dots being ever present, the controls and status bar disappear completely).
I watch a lot of movies and handle a lot of emails/calendar events/etc on my tablet so these two features are more than welcome. It does take a little time to get used to the new layout (I've been using the old style since I got my TF700, a week after they were released) but if you use an Android phone, it's close enough that it makes the transition easier. Also, I use my dock a lot so my home and back button placement is still the same most of the time (I always use the ones on the keyboard when it's an option).
I'm the type who likes to customize and re-customize every couple of months (different themes, launchers, etc) so I was more than ready for some change. If you set up the stock home screen the first week you got your tablet and have left it alone since, you'll probably prefer to just stick with the Honeycomb-esque controls. However, it's worth giving the new layout a try since you can always just revert back. Leave the custom shortcut on your home screen and you can go back to the setting and change back at any time.

Yeah I agree, having the Back, Home and Menu in the center is not optimal on a tablet, especially in landscape.

OK, I have tried the stock 4.2 launcher and went back to the 4.1 - I prefer having the main buttons at the left and the notifications at bottom-right. Much more accessible than at the top IMHO.
Thanks for the instructions, anyway

1. I assume you're on JB stock, from ASUS, right? I'm not on a stock ROM, now, but I'll try and extract them from a backup and upload ' em somewhere. Can't do that from my train commute, though (connection is.... crap, to say the least).
2. All launchers, save very few, use the same wallpaper process, meaning that it doesn't really depends on which launcher you use. Have you tried QuickPic for setting the wallpaper?
3. I do not understand what you are referring to at all, so can't help you there. Can you clarify, or rephrase?

For the 3rd question my answer is that sometimes when i am on my docking station and typing in the stock web browser and want to delete with backspace it doesn't do it. And sometimes when i am scrolling with touch in any web browser it won't scroll :S
I've got a fix for the wallpaper.
Download this and give it a shot. I've had no lagginess on JB based launchers but it lags TSF pretty bad.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ridgelineapps.simpleimagewallpaper&hl=en
You can choose different images for portrait and landscape or just decline to rotate the landscape at all.
Finding 1200x1920 images is pretty damn hard though.

For the web browser not wanting to scroll, in the stock browser, type about:debug press enter, then hit then menu key, 3 dots in the upper right corner, and hit settings. Next hit the labs tab and check enable light touch, it's towards the bottom of the list. This should help with any touch input used in the stock browser.

Let's try to fix Jelly bean official ROM bugs !!!

Hi there!
I have an HTC One S S4 and like all of you I have updated to jelly bean but I have been kind of disappointed because of some bugs/removed features that I have encountered in the use of the new ROM, here are some of the one I have found:
1) the new keyboard is laggy expecially because of the assisted writing. Also I don't like the new layout which doesn't have the "remove keyboard" button.
2) mobile wallpaper on the background in ICS move themself while sliding now in JB the background image is stuck, it's not moving while sliding through the pages of the home.
3) there is lag for the live wallpapers on the home...don't know maybe it's the rosie
4) equalization option inside the music player has been removed, the music player from stock rom 1.78 had it
5) meteo and music widgets has no more 3d effect while sliding through the home, it would be nice to have the old widgets back!!
Let's try to report here all of the bugs/removed features and also the fix for them ( always if they exists ). Actually I think that HTC isn't going to realese any more updates and this is disappointing.
THIS THREAD IS FOR FIX BUGS OF SENSE BY KEEP USING SENSE INTERFACE NOT BY USING OTHERS HOME LAUNCHERS

For me one of the most annoying things it's the keyboard too.
Also for the "remove keyboard" button that I use a lot, my problem it's that i made a lot of mistake during typing due to the dimension of the keyboard. I check with two phone near, one with JB and the other with the old ICS, and the keyboard of the JB it's smaller, and the area of a single character it's smaller!
USB PC connection. I like ICS because I can see files on my phone just like on any other removeable usb device.

You can use TWRP if you really need mass storage.

Its not the best but if you want to keep JB Sense then thats all you can do for mass storage.
Two things:
1 - Wrong section. Don't be a noob (too late...).
2 - HTC's JellyBean sucks. There is already a solution to fix ALL of these issues: GO TO AOSP. It's 10.5378x times better. I'm never going back to Sense now...

Seriously...asking to fix what are minor appearance and usability bugs in Sense is pretty much a full time job. If you're complaining about the wallpaper and 3d effects in widgets, you might as well make a list of all the ways Sense looks like crap starting with the basic color scheme and jarring difference in appearance when AOSP blue peeks through Sense green.

If I would have fixed those bugs/things by using another launcher first of all I would have NOT open this thread and second I would have NOT bought an HTC device in the first place. I like sense and I want to keep using it, also I think that a lot of people think the same. If you want to use CWD or something like that you are free to do that and nobody has invited you here.
P.S. I apologize for posting in the wrong section

I had red on the jelly bean official thread that someone fix the lag on the keyboard by doing a fresh install with the RUU and wiping everythin ( I have updated via OTA ), but I have never tried because I was skeptical about this, have you tried??

Hi,
On top of that mentioned, I'm working with Hebrew UI and not the only one who faced a FC on the calendar when trying to enter/change a meeting with a recipient.
The same procedure while on English UI is all fine.
Already opened a help ticket which was already escalated to the technical support as BUG.
In terms of official roms, I see no benefit with JB over say, ViperS 1.2.1 (ICS).
In fact, I think its inferior in almost every way (things like no USB Mass storage mode etc).
I ran stock ICS for quite a long time (compared to what I normally do) and was quite happy with it, nothing particularly wrong with it.
Then came the JB OTA, and the forums got flooded with issues :silly:
I'm going to format my phone to see if then the keyboard keep lagging...I just need some times to do that...
Can I ask, with the new JB update, do you lose the ability to connect the phone to a PC and access the SD Card (as a removable drive)?

when you connect the phone to the PC you will see that device on the pc explorer and by entering in it you can access the drive but you cannot connect it as a removable disk...indeed this is disappointing
By the way I have erased all the data and reset the phone completely, now the keyboard it's a little better, less lag but still worst of the one on ICS
well the keyboard is pretty much the same..a little better but still laggy, I want the old back!!

[Q] TF101 on TeamEos 4 JB4.2

Hey,
I've still got my forum training wheels on, and so I'll just put this Q here (rather than the directly related thread).
I've seen a few people ask this, but haven't yet found a conclusive answer.
I use my TF with this ROM and think it's great, not had any issues to speak of. However, I did love the HC/ICS (4.1) screen layout, where the notifications were in the bottom right along with the clock etc. There was no status bar at the top and Nav buttons were in the lower left. My question is... Is it possible to get this back, whilst still using the 4.2 ROM?
Hopefully somebody knows the answer....
I understand that this would require 4.1 launcher to be ported to 4.2, but I could be wrong.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers
I have that tablet running that ROM, but I've gotten used to 4.2 and haven't looked for a way to change it.
You should ask this in the TF101 forums.
I'm not sure how much a launcher could really do, but I'd Google "get back tablet layout in 4.2" or something to start checking it out on my own.
I'm not sure this is that easy. I use Apex launcher on that tablet and ROM and the layout doesn't change. I'm thinking that's a deeper layer than a launcher works with. I think you'd need a ROM with that baked in.

Hi Pennycake,
Thanks for the reply!
I've done lots of forum and Google hunting, but had little success...!
I've no grumbles using the phablet style layout. I just think that it was neater having everything on the navbar (tablet style).
I'll keep on looking and maybe stumble over something.
Cheers
Impossible...!?
So this is looking like it's not really possible without work being done to the SystemUI.
Withing the Eos Control Centre (This comes as part of the TeamEOS 4 ROM for TF101), there is a tablet option, but this leaves the status bar at the top.
I'll keep digging, but i won't hold my breath!!
Case closed...
Sweeeetttt...!!!
News just in...
timduru said:
Well yeah, we still have the code for tabletUI in EOS4 too.
Just that it has not been updated at all and is completely out of sync with all the EOS specific modifications, so most likely will crash.
But I might have a look at either bringing TabletUI back or implementing a new navbar from scratch to go with the phabletui.
That way we get rid of the navbar lag.
I'm also hopping that having to dig through the code even more with cornerstone, I could spot something.
But I've been thinking more and more about rewriting part of the window manager.
The original google code is Sh*t, and the more I look at it the more I come to the conclusion that PhabletUI is not made to work correctly on big screen / tablets.
On top of that code there's the EOS customizations which just make things more complex.
With cornerstone it's adding another spaghetti layer on top of the google spaghetti pile.
So yeah *headache*.
But yep I would say that the way PA has done it and rewriting part of the window manager & policy is the good approach.
Maybe I'll just resume work on Phubuntu instead too, and make a real multiboot that doesn't require flashing all the time.
We might benefit more from that, and it will have multiwindow support
Ahh so many things and so little time ;P

Problems with nightly ROM 111
I have a TF101 and finally decided to root and install the JB ROM. I started with EOS JDQ39 Nightly 108 and gapps_4.2.2_TF101_20130323b. This worked fine but when I updated to the nightly 111 I noticed that I Google play was not working. I would click on the app and it would start to load but disappear. It appears that I am not logged in anymore because gmail does not work either. I have tried to delete data from the gmail app and google play store from settings but the did not work. I have tried installing gapps again. Does not work. I tried another gapps, gapps-jb-20130301-signed and that just freezes my tablet on the EeePad screen.
Any ideas on how to get signed in on the tablet without a factory reset?

[Q] Cm10.1 vs cleanrom?

What do you guys recommend? Which is smoother?
Well CleanRom used to blow CM 10 out of the water performance wise however, since the most recent CM 10 came out I have enjoyed CM 10 more. They are both incredibly smooth and make your tablet worth the good money you paid for it. I personally think it comes down to preference. If you want a more stock android feel then you should go with CM 10 but if you want the Asus stuff then go with CleanRom. Your best bet is to flash both of them and see which one you like better.
Thanks! What is it that's better about stock that's so great? What features does it offer?

For me, I love the Asus quick settings. it has the quick toggles. the screen lock on bottom is useful when playing games, and the location and size of the notifications area. with Cromi and Asus, the notifications are larger. on a 10 inch tablet, there's no need to try to save screen space.
Basically, Cromi is great if you use landscape mode all the time, and Android stock is set up more for portrait view.

Add on to that: If you install the app called toggle notifications, you will have any type of toggles (widget, app launcher, settings etc..) in your notification, which keep everything stock like without messy pull down or widgets and of course cromi is the most trouble FREE rom.

[CM10.1][CORNERSTONE/MULTIWINDOW]bryce_rom[04/25]

First basic Cornerstone build based on cm10.1 nightlies. I have always wanted to have multiple windows on screen. Floating windows annoyed me because I always had to move them around.
Based on latest cm nightly, therefore you need to be on the latest bootloader!
Issues (a lot of things not tested):
- layouts in cornerstone panel are not perfect
- bottom window doesnt have a working layout
- lockscreen ?!?
What works so far:
- audio
- wifi
- wallpaper (you need to set it via settings -> display - > background, lockscreen wallpaper via settings -> lockscreen -> background)
Install instructions:
1. reboot into TWRP
2. do a complete system backup
2. if you werent running a cm10.1 build, do a complete wipe: system, data, cache, etc.
3. install bryce09 conerstone rom
4. if you were running a cm10.1 build you dont need to flash Gapps: 20130301
5. reboot

I will be trying this out later and let you know how it goes. Is there any chance you'd be able to make a CROMI-X compatible build in the future? I really very much appreciate this and hope you continue to work on it. The lack of ability to open multiple apps and run them side by side has been the single biggest thing I hate about android.
So what this does run apps side by side? you should post pics =D

You could check out videos on youtube: cornerstone android
Or post a screenshot yourself
Sorry I dont use CROMI myself and probably wont in the future. I like cyanogenmod too much. I also dont have enough harddisk space left to build another android version

I'm still locked awaiting the end of my warranty. I wasn't tempted to forego the last few months of warranty until today. Evil OP! Evil! :silly:
Really exciting though. I discovered cornerstone months ago, skipped for joy, then upon further inspection, it appeared to be abandoned. Thrilled to see some activity, and infinity development to boot. Good Luck, I'll be following what happens very closely. :good:
Love that this is getting worked on, huge props. Would be great to see if you could work with sdbags and get it working with CROMI.
Will definately be trying this out as it progresses. Is it running on the 4.2.1 boot loader?

Tried this - still pretty primitive at present, but I like the direction. Good work! Maybe some instructions on how best to use in the OP - because my experience was nothing like as controlled or fluid as the Youtube video suggested.

Love it!! Used to run a Cornerstone ROM on my old ViewSonic gTablet, and was disappointed in the lack of movement on this on the new builds. I still subscribe to the Cornerstone forum over on google so when I saw traffic picking up I was hopeful it would be coming.
as always, you devs ROCK!!
This could be a "turning point' or "the edge" over any other roms!:good:

I love the idea of cornerstone.
I speak French, so I can help you with translation.
